My favorite was Crystal (?), the "interestingly" dressed and made up blonde who couldn't quite understand Simon's question about her tan. Then seeing her mother made it all clear. :) Also enjoyed the 2 second audition of the Statue of Liberty. It's too bad he dressed up, because in those 2 seconds at least it sounded like he had a decent voice.
I'm not sure I saw any last night that I went "wow" about. Liked the crooner and glad they recognized the fact that Michael Buble and Josh Groban and the like are popular now and not exactly pop singers, then passed him to the next round. There was another guy who I thought was good, but the judges seemed undecided on him even though Paula said he seemed to have the complete package.

Entertaining, as always. Since it's gotten so popular, pretending to be the next William Hung has gotten a bit out of hand. But as usual, the best are the ones who are totally clueless, like that first guy they profiled.

Roffle! You just know that Randy and Paula did that to piss off Simon. Crazy Guy was absolutely terrible, but the more histrionics he did, the angrier Simon got and the other two just loved it. He is going to be fun to watch in Hollywood.
And dontcha think the producers told all of the contestants to try and sing that stupid Lady Marmelade song? No chance they get video of 30 people sining that song unless they're prompted. I even saw a few people who sang other songs and were rejected in that montage.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out how they got some of those pissed off people to come back and make an even bigger ass of themselves singing that song. That was the kind of thing that was staged and wasn't as funny as it would have been if it had been "real." That's one of those contrived William Hung moments.
I couldn't believe they put that idiot through. If I had been on the fence, I would have been pissed to have gotten passed over for him. Unless they just created an extra spot for him, as opposed to giving him a spot that otherwise would have gone to someone deserving. I can't remember - do they have X number of spots to fill, or are they just shooting at a target of around 125, give or take a few freaks?
My favorite moment from last night was when Randy and Paula both said no to someone who was terrible, and Simon said something like, "Ooh, harsh. I would have said yes. Goodbye!" That was freaking hilarious.

I don't think they go into the auditions thinking they are going to take a set number of people. I think they just take who they think is good enough. (They say the number at the end of the episode that they take from the city, and it's always some odd number. I think last night was 37).
Pretty sure they just worry about getting it down to a good, even number (or whatever number "works" for the later stages) once they get to Hollywood.

The reason why so many people sing the same song has to do with license agreements. Fox has to have clearance to use songs on the show, even for auditions. This was made apparent when someone sang a Kelly Clarkson song last night.
One report says:
Licensing songs for television can be a complicated and costly business, but "Idol" has simplified the process by offering the same amount for the rights to all songs sung on the show. If a publisher turns down the offer, the contestants simply must choose between cleared material.
I'm guessing that contestants have to clear their material even before going in with Simon, Randy and Paula. They are prescreened.

Clarkson Deals With 'American Idol' Past
01/18/2006 11:58 AM, AP
David Bauder
Singer Kelly Clarkson, who vaulted to fame as the first "American Idol" winner in 2002, is now apparently refusing to let any of her songs be used by new contestants on the show.
A spokesman for Clarkson insisted it's nothing personal, but the stance prompted a public scolding from "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell.
"I think that by ignoring the show you're ignoring the audience who put you there," Cowell said on Tuesday.
Clarkson has become a major star in the past year, with her hit "Since U Been Gone" earning both massive sales and critical respect, particularly from a rock community that has looked upon "American Idol" contestants warily. Her album "Breakaway" earned a Grammy nomination for best pop vocal album.
Yet it may have cost her a good relationship with the nation's most popular talent show.
"American Idol" must obtain permission from owners of song licenses before the music can be used on the show. While many love the exposure, some artists — the Beatles, for one — like to rigidly control use of their music.
Clarkson is not allowing any of her songs to be licensed for other uses, said Roger Widynowski, a spokesman for Sony BMG. "It has nothing to do with `Idol,'" he said.
The show's executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe, said he spoke to Clarkson's manager on Friday and the manager said he was unaware of the situation. He said he's waiting for a call back.
Before "Breakaway," Clarkson fired Simon Fuller, the "American Idol" creator, as her manager, saying that although he was a "great guy," she needed someone who could give her career more attention. She teamed with Swedish hitmaker Max Martin on "Since U Been Gone."
It's the same delicate position faced by countless other musicians through show biz history, wanting to break away and show artistic independence without alienating those who gave them their start.
Cowell said he hoped Clarkson would let her music be used on "American Idol."
"No matter how talented Kelly Clarkson is, she would not be in the position she's in now without winning this show," he said. "And forget the way she feels about us or the producers or anybody else, or the terrible songwriters she alleges she was with which sold her millions of records.
"It's the public who bothered to pick up the phone to vote for her," he said. "If she refuses to give songs to be used on the show, it's like saying to every person who voted for you, `you know what? Thank you. I'm not interested in you anymore.'"
With the seemingly unquenchable public interest in "American Idol," it's not like the show really needs Clarkson. But she's plainly the best example producers can point to in proving how they can open the door to wish fulfillment.
Widynowski said he would not comment on Cowell's remarks.
For his part, Cowell said, "I don't like this, when they walk away from the show and kind of forget."

I can't remember. Big black guys. Here is the story...
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — They sang like angels for their audition on Tuesday's 'American Idol' premiere, but a pair of Tennessee twins may sound more like jailbirds by the time the show goes live from Hollywood.
Twenty-eight-year-old Terrell Brittenum has been in jail since Jan. 10 on an outstanding warrant for charges related to the illegal purchase of a car in Rockdale County, Ga.
He and his brother, Derrell, are accused of using another man's identity to buy a 2005 Dodge Magnum in June.
The Commercial Appeal newspaper reports that Derrell is expected to turn himself in on the same charges of forgery, theft by deception and financial identity fraud.
The brothers auditioned together in September for the hit TV show 'American Idol' and impressed the show's prickly judges to continue to the next round. Segments of the show have already been recorded and will air during the next few weeks.
Fox Broadcasting Company has refused to discuss the Brittenums or their status on the show.

*WARNING POTENTIAL SPOILERS*
A bit of interesting information I ran across at a blog site while trying to find a pic of these guys...apparently someone has confirmed that AI has registered websites in the names of April Walsh, the fat chick who sang Bjork; Heather Cox, a chick we only saw for 5 seconds on the show; Chris Daughtry, the rocker guy with the wife who can't stop crying; Brett "Ace" Young, the Justin Timberlake-like singer who Simon gave a yes with a little 'y' to; Lisa Tucker, the 16 year old former Star Search contestant who has already accomplished more in 16 years than I have in 34 and is next in line for a Nobel Prize; and Terrell and his other brother Derrell; all of whom appear to have moved on to the round of 24. There's a website with a list of leaked info and pics/bios of everyone who appears to be in the top 24 - some of whom we haven't even seen yet, of course - including one chick named Tora whose friend accidentally let slip on a radio show last week that she replaced a disqualified contestant. She and one other person are the only ones who haven't been registered by AI through Netnames.com. Hmmm, I wonder who they might have replaced?

From what I'm reading, there are a lot more "known" entities this year. That Ace guy apparently recorded a song for a soundtrack in 2000 (I thought you had to be an amateur?), Lisa Taylor was on Star Search, another chick is the daughter of a Massachussets state senator and has a scholarship to BC for basketball, another is a twin who partipicated in Fear Factor and has some acting/modeling credits, another who is high up as a youth leader in the Democratic Party, and a couple of former pageant contestants.

Depends on the theme night they have. Last year, they had a wide variety of theme nights that weren't restrictive (pick a song from your birth year, Billboard song, current songs, etc) The worst one was the show tunes one and I think even Simon thought that was a disaster.
I'll give even odds though that at some time during Idol, he will sing a Joe Cocker song. :D

Once again, I agreed with just about everything Simon said. Four very impressive performances - the 3 black girls (the fat one and the 16 and 17 year olds) and Katherine McPhee, who has been my pick to win since the moment I saw her audition. I have a feeling that just like 2 years ago, the black girls are going to split the vote and only one of them is going to make it into the top 5. As far as the rest, they usually can't sing anyway, so I appreciate the hotties.
As bad as the girls sounded, I think they are a better group than the guys. Only Travis really has a complete package, and even then, his style, age, and hair are going to kill him. I guess Ace is going to get the Constantine vote, and I think Patrick Hall might slip under the radar. That Daughtry guy is probably going to be strong. But just on looks/average vocals, there are several guys who automatically don't stand a chance - Bucky, Bobby, Gedeon, and Kevin Covais, who must be AI's idea of a joke. Sway will probably last longer than he should, and Elliot seems to have a better voice than his looks will allow him to stay around for.
I think, without a doubt, the highest ceiling among all 24 is with the girls.

I'm comfortable enough with my own sexuality to admit I enjoy American Idol. Something my wife (who is a very nice and attractive female, oh, hell, Ksyrup, ah wish I cud quit you) and I like watching and discussing.
So, it's on for year two of the Solecismic American Idol rankings. As you're aware, last season, the rankings were sometimes dead on, with Carrie Underwood leading the way with an average score of 84, though it failed to predict Anthony Federov (62) somehow making it to fourth place.
Here we go with part one of the first round:
1. Kellie Pickler. Yes, she's trying to emulate Carrie Underwood. Right down to the mannerisms. But she has a big voice and a real sweetness, and did a fine job tonight. Score of 88.
2. Katharine McPhee. There was a real ease to how she coaxed that bluesy tune. I'm looking forward to hearing her rock. Definitely one of the favorites in the competition. Score of 87.
3. Lisa Tucker. A 16-year-old with tremendous stage presence. I thought she missed a lot of notes, but she will grow during the competition if she can handle it. Score of 83.
4. Paris Bennett. With all that training, it's easy to consider her a ringer even at 17. I thought she made a safe, uninspiring choice, but she did it very well. Score of 82.
5. Melissa McGhee. I thought she was much better than the judges did. It was a tough song and she was in tune and in control. Score of 79.
6. Mandisa Hundley. Solid performance. A little too much worship from the judges. Score of 78.
7. Ayla Brown. I honestly thought I was watching a Miss America pageant while she was singing. A lot of training, not a great voice. She will not hold up. Score of 72.
8. Heather Cox. Now we're getting into the very-little-chance-of-reaching-the-final-12 crowd. Just not a memorable performance. Adequate, but flimsy. Score of 63.
9. Becky O'Donohue. Just here for her looks. Score of 53.
10. Brenna Gethers. Why not just sing "Happy Birthday?" Terrible choice, and boring rendition. She can do better. Score of 52.
11. Stevie Scott. Disasterous song choice. This girl can sing, but did not show it tonight. Emulating Enya with a sore throat is not going to make it here. Score of 41.
12. Kinnik Sky. Pretty girl, but was a single note in key? Score of 40.
Any of the top five here could break out and be a contender in this competition. I do see the bottom two here leaving, with Kinnik Sky having a chance of unseating Becky O'Donohue. Stevie Scott is pretty much a definite goner.

I must have seen a different Kellie Pickler sing...cause I don't think she's top twelve material. Well I'll not be surprised if she made it there...cause she is cute and likeable and all. I just didn't think her performance tonight put her firmly in the top five or six.

I thought Stevie Scott was the worst of the performances last night. I also think Paris, while incredibly talented, has a bit too much Fantasia going on for her to make it as far as her voice should probably take her. That performance was all Fantasia - minus the gi-normous mouth and strange voice.
I was watching while getting some work done last night and I think what ever the girl's name that went last was clearly the best. Based on descriptions above, I'm guessing it was Katherine McPhee? If she was the one that went last, she was far and away the best I heard. Some of them were atrocious. Including the Pickler girl, which surprised me, because she was much better than that in her audition from what I remember. Maybe it was just because in the auditions they get sandwiched between people that shouldn't even be there. Not sure.
As for the idiocy in posting something like "duh if you like american idol ur gay omg" : posting something like that says A LOT more about the poster than people that like american idol.

Yeah, I'd have to say the only ranking of Jim's that I found to be way off base was Pickler. She was average, at best - clearly nervous, and I assume she'll improve, but not very good last night.

You should get paid for your analysis. Spot on.

Jim, you ignorant slut....
Kellie Pickler? Come on! Maybe she'll improve to be a decent shot for the final 5 or so, but there is no way she should be in the top 5 last night, much less number one. She was more than bad last night. Nerves? Probably, but she doesn't have that strong a voice to begin with. She has a good bit of ground to make up to even approach the top four-five girls.

I actually thought the performances last night were better than expected, because I haven't been too impressed with the entire group of 24 overall.
Some of my favorites from last night were:
Paris Bennett-Yeah she's Fantasia's sister/clone, but she's fun to watch and clearly had fun with her performance. I thought the song was a perfect choice when she said what she was going to sing.
Lisa Tucker-Judges need to get over this "old song" crap. Fantasia had one of the best performances ever with Summertime two seasons ago, and Lisa did justice to this song. Seems very sweet and likeable.
Melissa McGhee-Like Jim surprised the judges didn't like it much. I thought she did a good job with it.
Ayla Brown-She was perhaps the biggest surprise of the night for me. I wasn't expecting to like her very much based on her audition, but I thought she looked really poised and sang well.
Next level down:
Mandisa-Nice start, always tough to be the first one out of the box.
Katharing McPhee-I was surprised to see such glowing praise for her. To me she looked nervous and awkward on stage, and the song was not the best fit for her voice.
Becky Donahue-don't remember much about her, so can't be that bad.
Kinnik Sky-Seen plenty of people botch that song, I thought she did a decent job with some rough spots. A bit overdressed for the occasion though. :) Deserves to stick around another week.
Bottom of the barrel:
Kelly Pickler-Sweet giri with obvious comparisons to Carrie Underwood. I thought at times she was yelling at her father rather than singing that song. Voice not as strong as Carrie's and Carrie didn't exactly have a strong voice.
Brenna Gethers-I was so hoping she'd pick a song that didn't suit her personality, because I can't stand her personality and I want her out of there.
Stevie Scott-Man I was pulling for her. Idol has long needed a Josh Groban/Charlotte Church/Sarah Brightman type to do well. If Josh Groban is your idol, then at least attempt to sing with half the power and emotion he does. Awful song choice for how she sang it.
Heather Cox-Obviously let her nerves get the better of her.
I'd like to see Brenna go, and sadly I can't see Stevie making it past this round. But it will probably be Stevie and Heather going.

I agree. Otherwise, I think Jim's rankings are dead-on, but Pickler would be 6th on my list just based on vocals. However, I think Jim is also factoring in likability and cuteness factor in which case I would bump her up to 4th or 5th.

My problem with Paris Bennett is that I just didn't "buy into" her song. Meaning, that while she was obviously performing and singing, it just didn't seem quite "right" to me. It seemed "off".
Everyone is comparing her to Fantasia, but Hell Fantasia could perform with a capital "P". She was rarely unconvincing in her performances. Fantasia would eat that little Paris girl for lunch. That said..I do like Paris' voice better than Fantasia's.

The top four guys (Chris, Ace, Elliot, and Taylor) are head and shoulders above the top 4 females in talent and uniqueness. I would not be surprised at all if the top four isn't four guys. The guys are about 8 deep talent wise compared to 4 deep in the girls (5 if you really stretch it).

I agree. I think at the very least the final 3 are likely to be guys. I hope Taylor can make it far. From what Simon said about the feedback he has been hearing, I'm thinking Taylor has a better chance. Everyone I talk to, likes him.

I'm going to go against conventional wisdom once again and say that tonight was excruciating. I had a hard time just sticking through the entire show. More than once I said to my wife that it just wouldn't be worth it sitting through the entire season with this collection of wannabes.
Paul Abdul is clearly on some wonderful menagerie of medications. Randy Jackson just likes young guys, apparently. And even Simon, who started out on the right track, finally cracked and gave in to the hype.
So, here's part 2 of round one of the latest American Idol, in which was quite a long, long way from American Idyll tonight.
1. Ace Young. He missed a couple of notes, but he has a stage presence, and picked a very tough song which he executed very well. Definitely the exception to the evening. I think he has at least a 50/50 chance of winning the entire competition. Score of 93.
2. Chris Daughtry. He has an excellent voice. My only problem was that he gave a near identical rendition to the original. No question he's in the next round. Score of 85.
3. Gedeon McKinney. Very nice execution and stage presence. He's a bit of a funny kid with the speech patterns, may be a bit of a male Fantasia there. But more likeable. Score of 80.
4. Jose Penala. Give him credit for hitting some tough notes in falsetto. The whole program just didn't come together for me, it was a long way from being presentable. Note the gap here from 3rd to 4th. Score of 65.
5. Elliott Yamin. I'll also give him credit for degree of difficulty. But it was a bit painful to the ear. I thought he was consistently flat and very overrated. Score of 63.
6. Patrick Hall. I was bored. When he was done, I was thinking bottom two. Little did I know it would get worse. Much, much worse. A very ordinary rendition. Score of 62.
7. Taylor Hicks. Not one damned note was in tune. Not a one. I don't care how likeable he is, he has to be the most overrated contestant in history. Score of 60.
8. David Radford. Yes, we get it, you can croon to Queen, too. Is that THE most karaoked song in history? He did okay with it, but there's a reason you can not sit through a night of karaoke without hearing that song. Everyone can sing it, or croon it, or doo-wop it, or whatever. Score of 58.
9. Kevin Covais. This kid is affected beyond human comprehension. He'd probably do the vibratto thing when singing "He's a Jolly Good Fellow" to a classmate at graduation. And get punched in the stomach. He also sounds remarkably like a muppet. Score of 53.
10. Will Makar. Just a very weak performance. Should have been last, but it wasn't. Score of 44.
11. Bobby Bennett. It's good to know what Horatio Sanz would sound like if he made a joke out of Barry Manilow. Score of 39.
12. Bucky Covington. Okay, I hate Skynyrd. I admit it. To me, it's monotone monotony. He made the Skynyrd rendition sound good in comparison. Score of 35.
Prediction: Bobby Bennett and Will Makar exit stage left. Personally, I don't care - there's no way the audience could screw this one up unless they take out one of the top three.
your list reminds me... the lisp that Kevin Covais has is REALLY annoying and makes me cringe when he sings

Ace was good. Not the most challenging song or anything, but he certainly has a presence.
Chris was fine, although as noted he was very close to the original.

I think the Solecismic ratings place a large emphasis on attractiveness.
Overall, the guys were a lot better than the girls, which isn't saying much. Ace, Chris and Taylor were the only ones I really liked. Everyone else sounded off. I thought Sway took a chance, which was nice, but that's not what you need to do to start off the competition, plus he sounded like shit. When he actually sung with his normal singing voice, he sounded damn good. Bucky, Will, David, Elliot, Patrick, and Kevin sounded horrible. Bobby made me laugh, and I have 80 cousins like him, so he should stick around another week. Even so, the girls shouldn't even be in the same competition as the guys. Hell, Ace may be more attractive than everyone one but Carrie Underwood, II.

I'm taking more heat (at home, too) for the Taylor comments than just about any I've ever made. I did study music for awhile, but it was a long time ago. I have what's known as perfect pitch. I felt nearly every note was just slightly off. Maybe it's his style. He'll certainly be around for a long time, so there will be many other chances to pick up on it. I could be wrong on this.
I don't count attractiveness in my evaluation. Otherwise Stevie would never be last among the women - she's very cute. I don't know why I liked Kellie's performance so much. I am not a country fan. Maybe there's a purity of tone that seems like it will translate to the type of rock that more shows off a voice. Maybe I'll be disappointed with her down the road.
Anyway, here are my odds, so far, of winning. These do take appearance into account.
Ace Young: 1-1
Paris Bennett: 3-1
Kellie Pickler: 5-1
Chris Daughtry: 6-1
Katharine McPhee: 7-1
Lisa Tucker: 7-1
Mandisa Hundley: 9-1
Taylor Hicks: 11-1
Melissa McGhee: 25-1
Gedeon McKinney: 25-1
Elliott Yamin: 25-1
Jose Penala: 50-1
Brenna Gethers: 50-1

Dola.
I think one of the "problems" his style could cause people is that it challenges them much more than the vanilla modern R&B/country/stevie wonder wanna be/pop stuff that is so prevalent on this show and in mainstream culture.
I'm not saying people should automatically like it, but I think they should respect it and it's different tones, melodies, etc. before they make judgements in comparison with their normal comfort zone music. It's like an alternative fanatic saying that Thelonious Monk is off key. Now, I'm not comparing Hicks with Monk by any means, but I think people understand what I mean.

I have been bothered for awhile by who Taylor reminds me of, and then a few minutes ago, I figured it out -Michael McDonald. Now, I've always thought of him as cheesy, but after listening to multiple mp3 samples of him, he's amazing. Taylor is extremely similar, although he's about 2-3 octaves higher.
This is cool, because now I might have found an R&B singer I actually like. I'll be checking out McDonald more. :)

I have to go with the common opinion here and say that Taylor is good. I think he'll go far, with a large part of his success due to being so different than anything this show has seen.
I have to go against common opinion and agree with Jim (and a couple others). I think the girls were better than the guys. Or, perhaps more precisely, the top girls were better than the top guys. Ace, Chris and Taylor were the only ones I thought were very good last night. The others were just... eh...
But putting three against three (Paris, Lisa and Katherine vs. Ace, Chris and Taylor), I think at this point I'd say one of the girls wins. That's a fairly solid top 6 though.
So are Ace and Becky the "prettiest" contestants ever to be on this show? Those two ought to hook up just for symmetry.

Like Jim and a couple others, I thought the girls outshone the boys overall. While the top couple guys might be stronger than the top girls, the rest of the boys were pretty mediocre to bad to me. And unlike the girls, the younger guys all suffered.
Some I liked:
Ace-The clear man to beat at the moment-I liked Randy's comments about him in comparison to some from previous seasons (aka Constantine)
Chris-Always thought he'd make the Top 6, and last night didn't change that. Needs to work on stage performance though.
Elliott-The underdog I think. I've liked him since the beginning too and there wasn't much buzz about him coming into the competition last night. Also needs to work on stage performance.
Next Level Down:
"Sway"-I put him here because it was incredibly risky to sing that song that way. I didn't particularly like it, but he showed versatility and some potential. Which is more than I thought of him before last night.
Taylor Hicks-I'm with Jim somewhat. His voice was better than I remember it from the auditions and Hollywood week, but he's almost painful to watch. And I'm surprised the judges haven't commented about it really. I better get used to it though cause he's in the Top 6 for sure.
Patrick Hall-Bad song choice + 1st to sing has me worried he'll survive this round. Which is a shame because he has some potential I think.
David Radford-Yeah his performance was a bit over the top, but I liked it, and his voice sounded good for the most part. He showed personality, which is good, because he was reminding me of red-headed John from a season or two back who had no personality. I hope he survives this round, because I enjoy watching him sing.
Gedeon-He actually surprised me with his performance and voice. I really didn't like him much before last night and combined with his somewhat arrogant personality, I was hoping he'd be gone this week. But he can stay another week now. :) Great song choice for him.
Bucky-Well he's about as redneck as they come I think, but I liked him better than expected. He'd probably fit in well with Bo's band. Like him to pick a song where I can understand the words better though. :)
Need to go:
Kevin Covais-Ugh. Looked like a deer caught in the headlights and his performance suffered from it. Can't believe Paula and Randy liked him so much. But his "cuteness" will probably save him from being voted out for a week or two. A case where the judges should have said no from the beginning with encouragement to try again in a couple years.
Will Makar-Another youngster who probably shouldn't have made it to Hollywood let alone the Top 12. I like his voice better than Kevin's though.
Bobby Bennett-Cringed when I heard the song choice and cringed all the way through it. How did this guy make it to the Top 12? Sounded more like he should be singing in Vegas or at bar mitzvah's and weddings. Seems like a nice fun guy, but boy that was way over the top.
I think Will and Bobby will go, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Patrick or David as one of the two, which would be a shame.

Yeah, the perfect pitch thing is a bit silly. I remember some old music teacher making a big deal about it, but ultimately it's only a parlor trick. I'm just very sensitive to very small changes in pitch.
I'll definitely listen much more closely to Taylor next week. I'm aware that I'm in a very small minority in thinking he was terrible last night. I had passed off Simon's reaction to simple weariness in disagreeing with Paula's crack-induced lovefest for each competitior. I can only imagine his right arm is covered with bruises by the end of a season.

I really liked Taylor and thought Ace was good, but overall put me in the camp that felt the girls were stronger than the boys. I could pick out 6 girls pretty easily (I can't remember names right now) but would have trouble after the top 3 guys or so.
A real plus for me was skipping all the audition crap, so this week was my first time to see any of them. That makes it much more interesting for me. I'm done with the auditions.
Did they drop the bottom two last year? I don't remember that happening. I did miss the first week's show last year, though.

If I remember right, yeah, they did. I believe like this year there were two or three shows of just boys and girls and two dropped each time until there were six of each left.....

I also remember it that way. As far as the early format, it seems exactly the same as last year. 3 weeks of getting rid of the bottom 2 boys and girls until they are down to just their top 12 overall.

Watching American Idol, I sometimes wonder if I'm hearing completely different things from the judges. Granted I have no musical training but watching it from the perspective of a consumer, I have no idea where the judges come from.
Girls: I liked the performances (note I say performances) of Becky, Catherine and Lisa Tucker. The others were very meh. And for some reason, Paris Bennet really irritates me.
Guys: Ace, Chris, Taylor, Bucky and Elliot did well I thought. Guys who irritated me were Will (uggh, irritating), Kevin (agree with Simon, 90 year olds would like him), Gadeon (he can sing but his smile really bothers me and he's way too cocky) and Bobby (didn't appear to be serious at all).
And Paula needs to be booted off the show to be honest. I don't think she said one negative thing the entire show and everyone was a winner in her eyes. Maybe she's paid to do that.

I'm not a big Paris fan. I think she has a really good voice in certain genres but, the times I've heard her sing more modern stuff, I just haven't been impressed... I've been more impressed with Lisa than Paris. At this point, I'd put the final 6 at Chris, Lisa, Katharine, Taylor, Ace and Elliot. Kevin is this years John Stephens with a better voice.

Tayler Hicks is the best singer on American Idol. Ever.
He's the first person I've ever seen on the show who I'd buy his CD. And I'd pre-order it.
I strongly agree that he is the strongest out of the males. He sings with much more passion and flair than the other performers and his voice is also the most unique. He doesn't sound like a copycat of anyone. He better make it to the finals, but I have a feeling more people will pull for Ace or Chris.
And Paris should get much more credit than she is getting. She is by far the one to beat on the girl's side. She has better command of the stage and the range of her voice than the others. I am still shocked that she could sing that way considering that she talks like a southern Minnie Mouse.

Based on pure singing ability (which is most important to me), here are my top 4 for each sex:
Men
1. Taylor Hicks
2. Elliot Yamin
3. Chris Daughtry (even though I don't like his style)
4. Ace (even though I dislike him)
Women
1. Lisa Tucker (Simply a star)
2. Paris Bennett
3. Melissa McGhee (Iffy on this one, but shes talented)
4. Katharine McPhee (Good, but not sold on the cuteness factor)
My top 3 overall
1. Taylor Hicks
2. Lisa Tucker
3. Paris Bennett
Honorable Mention: Elliot Yamin - Would be #3, but he needs to work on his image (teeth)

Put me down as a Taylor fan. First time I heard the (inevitable comparison to Joe Cocker) voice, it was also the first time I said of any contestant, "I would buy his CD no matter what he was singing."
That said, his rendition of LeVon, while a good song choice, wasn't his best performance. He needed to be more melodic than he was.
As for the girls...um...I don't care. Not about a one of them. Mandisa impressed me perhaps the most, because she sang well, performed well, and has personality. The best voices in the group (i.e. Lisa) seemed too trained and not actually the "diamond in the rough" find that makes an Idol contestant truly appealing. The lesser voices lacked performance or originality (Kelly is cute, but how's she really any different from 100 other country singers?). As time goes on, however, I expect the more talented young ladies (i.e. Paris) to develop and give the guys a run for their money.
BTW, I very often agree wholeheartedly with Simon. Not always, but usually.

I was in Orlando at an insurance symposium/job hunt, so I missed this thread. I did get to see the shows, though. I thought Taylor had an off-night, and was still better than anyone on the stage. I love - freaking love - his tourette's syndrome yelps. I'm praying for him to give us a spontaneous "GODDAMMUTHERFUCKERWOOPYEAH!" during a live show. That would be the best TV moment of my life.
I was bummed to see Becky go. She's a maybelline girl waiting to happen. Apparently she sings, too.
Last year I fucking hated that Barbra Streisand wannabe chick and wished she would get canned every single week. Well, I've got my Mikalah this year...and it's Sway. First of all, what a fucking stupid gimmick - a one-name nickname, and a stupid one at that. Second, the guy can't sing. That song he sang...I'll admit that's not my scene AT ALL, but I fail to hear the difference between well done falsetto and the chipmunks. I heard a couple of people do the same thing during auditions that the judges laughed at. And the word "pimp" flew off my lips about 5 minutes before Simon uttered it. What a joke of a contestant he is. I can't find one likeable quality about him. He's even too short to take seriously. I think he was destined to be on my shitlist, if his parents subjected him to that piece of garbage song as an infant.
I can't wait for Bucky to go. Looking at his teeth makes me wince. And Kevin Covais is so bad that he's going to be around for a long time. I almost made him my Mikalah 2006, but I knew I would be destined to disappointment as he continued to sail through the voting.
Ace should just quit AI and join the next version of Backstreet Boys/98 Degrees/NSync. That's about all he is. Yes, he's good looking, and yes, he can sing. I'm thoroughly underwhelmed.
That Gedeon guy...he's right up there with Sway and Kevin on my unlikeable list. And once again, Simon and I were reading each other's minds when he commented about the guy's smile. His facial features are too hard, the lines too strongly drawn. He just doesn't look quite right. And I can't believe they gave him a free pass for singing Shout. That was weak. You'll be singing standards for the rest of the competition, pick something a little less of a staple next time. Sheesh.

I've heard of the Doobie Brothers, but I had no idea that McDonald was the lead singer. I am neutral on them. If that doesn't give me your seal of approval, I couldn't care the fuck less. I know music, I sing music and I write music. Uh...OK? Got nothing to do with like and dislike, I was just amazed that you might not have heard of him and/or the Doobie Brothers. I don't really have an opinion on the guy myself - I can listen to his music without cringing, but don't own any of it. I'm not sure where you got that I was criticizing your taste in music - the comment was meant as "no matter what type of music you prefer, you've heard a lot of this guy during your life."
And for the record, I don't just listen to music, I've played it for 25+ years as well. Not that that really has anything to do with this particular issue, but since you felt the need to vent, I figured I should correct your misunderstanding. I consider myself knowledgeable (something less than "an authority") about certain types of music, but certainly not as to what's good and what's not. I mean, I know what I like and what I don't and am not afraid to share my opinions, and I know what professional music critics think about certain artists (sometimes I agree, sometimes I don't). But that doesn't mean that just because I think X band sucks that I think any less of someone who likes them. I've tried to make that point to the few people who have attempted to publicly call me out on this, but to no avail. And I'm sure this won't be the last time.

It has a purpose. Again, not enough to make me buy it, but I can see what people get out of it. When the mood strikes me, I could probably be persuaded to admit that What a Fool Believes is a damn fine pop/soul song. I've always found it difficult to get my arms around the McDonald Doobie Brothers years, as well as Hall & Oates. Very similar "blue-eyed soul" that gets unfairly dumped on, IMO. Underneath it all is some fine pop songs, even if the packaging makes you gag.

No discussion of last night's performances? Can't say I'm surprised. That was like my personal nightmare episode. Lousy, uninspired performances for the most part, of songs by artists and/or in genres I despise - several different country songs, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Bette Midler. All I needed was a Barbra Streisand cover and I would have hanged myself.
I think last night played up the problem with making this a 4-month competition - there are clearly several people a cut above the rest, and they're just treading water until the competition gets down to 6 or so (including the guys). That's about 2 months of safe songs/performances to get bored with. And the others are really not cut out for this stuff - the wife and I are taking particular delight in watching Brenna do so poorly, since she seems to be the only one on the show who has that "undeserved diva" complex.
This is why Rockstar is superior to AI - aside from the fact that its music I like and the band is part of the show, even when the vocals aren't all that great, we typically get very good performances which make up for it. Or at the very least, interesting attempts to craft a well-known song into something unique, by people who may be amateurs, but have musical abilities beyond just singing into their mirror.
I know that the "unknown factor" is one of the reasons for the success of AI, but look at the people who are the best this season - I don't think any of them are completely unknown talents, aside from Pickler, and the wife and I agree that if she doesn't get control of her nerves, eventually she's going to keep giving uninspired performances and get booted. I thought last night was not good for her, and Simon was dead on - the "calamari" thing gave her some life. At some point, she's got to show personality through her singing, not her backstory.
Anyway, here's hoping tonight is better. Seeing as though I'm going to see Glen Philips after AI ends, I can guarantee that tonight will be better than last night for me, anyway.

I do agree that last night was generally a night of subpar performances. Mrs. Eaglesfan thought most of them sounded poor to average with Mandisa sounding the best (but still not great or even very good - just good.) We both think the guys so far are showing themselves to be stronger as a group. Of course, that could change tonight. However, we don't think the guys will be worse than last night.

Very very meh overall.
The one thing I liked was that the judges, aka Paula, were more willing to give real criticism this week, rather than give bland compliments. And sadly, I truly cannot remember most of the performances given since they were just so .. meh.

I said last night that Brenna and Heather would be gone. I just think people think Brenna is too big of a bitch. I think Kellie is trying way to hard to come across as cute. I thought the song was fine but afterwards was a bit silly. Paris and Mandisa have some pipes but they do not have the stage presence to win. I think this year will be going to a guy.

Yep agree with everyone else. These were the types of performances I was expecting on Night 1 of the the Top 12 performances. I think the best I might give any of them was a 7 out of 10, maybe an 8. My darkhorse amongst the ladies remains Ayla. Unlike Simon I don't think she is all that mechanical. I think she has a lot of charisma when she sings and has that interesting backstory too (college basketball).
Heather should have gone last week, and her performance last night should seal the deal for her. The second person to go should be Brenna, but those who like the fact that she basically embarasses herself each time she opens her mouth will likely keep her around another week. In that case it will likely be Kinnik who goes, but I think they are all in danger this week with those performances.
Ksyrup
03-01-2006, 02:01 PM
Problem with Ayla is that she's a bit too pristine to capture the "hearts and minds" of common folk. She's almost the antithesis of Pickles. She's a top student, has a college basketball scholarship, appears refined (despite the tomboy stuff, I don't believe that (beyond like 12 years old) - she cleans up rather well and looks comfortable)...and oh yeah, daddy is a state senator.
At some point, this could become a "who needs it most" type decision. You've got Ayla, Lisa Tucker the Great (starred in Lion King at 10 and was on Star Search at 13), and Paris, who has connections to the business. And then there's Pickles, who I think will continue to sail through because she's hot and seems down to earth (almost too down to earth, really). The only things to stop Pickles will be her nerves, the Carrie Underwood Factor, and 1 of about 3 guys.
Cuckoo
03-01-2006, 02:32 PM
I have to admit that I'm kind of rooting for Ayla, and I'm not really sure why. I think she's better than given credit for, although not the top singer in the competition certainly. I agree with Ksyrup, though. Her "elite" status, whether real or just perceived, won't help her.
Eaglesfan27

I like the nickname "Pickles." I also think the Carrie Underwood factor could hurt her at least late in the competition.

The rest will be battling to see who goes home.
I do want to know what the hell Randy and Paula were smoking with their erview of Ace. He was off key the entire freaking song and sounded like crap. There were a coulpe really bad performances that the two of them acted like they just saw a grammy winner. Simon was pretty much dead on with his criticisms this week, but I actually think he is usually the closest to benig right most of the time. Paula is worthless as a judge and Randy is there just to tell the world who he has worked with.

Simon is almost always right. The only time he's not is when he goes overboard in critiquing someone "as the worst ever." Not only were they wrong about Ace, who was terrible, but giving props to Covais for his soul-less version of Grapevine was ludicrous. I turned to my wife and said, "What the hell? It's probably 50/50 whether I've heard it or not. I'm generally unfamiliar with Fuel, although if they're the band I'm thinking of, I do remember a video with a guy on fire running in slow motion. If that's them (and it might even be this song), then I've heard them, but can't place the song.
I have a unique ability to listen to hours of music a week, yet be completely oblivious to what's on the radio. For instance, I haven't knowingly ever heard a single song by Coldplay or White Stripes. Just from the descriptions I've read, I'm fairly confident they aren't for me, so I've stayed away.

I'll borrow EaglesFan's ranking system here because it's pretty much how I rate them.
Excellent:
Chris-Never heard the song before and not one I'd go looking for, but he clearly was the best last night.
Very good:
Gedeon-surprises me again, always picks the right songs for his voice, watch out when he doesn't.
Elliott-the dark horse for the men, though he does need to improve on the performance part.
Avg to Good:
Taylor-still hard to watch, but a decent song choice for his voice.
Will-the surprise of the evening. Love the song he sang, and he had good control and command of his voice. Had a bit of a Josh Groban thing going there. Pretty weak on the performance side though.
Fair to Avg:
Bucky-if he wants to be a country singer, he better do a better job on a Garth Brooks song than that-voice just doesn't have the power it needs.
Ace-Luckily for him he has last week and the audition performances to fall back on because that was just not good. Be a shocker if he went tonight, but if people just judge him on last night, he could go.
Poor:
David-Man what was up him? He seemed very annoyed, angry, and/or upset during and after his performance. Barely spoke to the judges or Ryan afterwards. Went back to this crooner roots after the judges told him that's what he should concentrate on-then they criticize him. He can't win.
Sway-His nickname got him in the Top 12, and hopefully he'll just sway out the door tonight.
Kevin - Liked him better than week 1, but really he's so much of a fish out of water here. Cuteness factor will likely keep him around far longer than he should a la John Stevens.
I think its between David, Sway, Kevin, Will, and Bucky this week with David and Sway likely to go.
anyone else get a good laugh when Will said he remembers watching Justin Guarini when he was 12 years old?
