An incident at work tonight prompted me to post this. As many of you know I am a bartender at a very busy bar. Tonight I refused service to a women, long story short the guy she was with called me an asshole, we got in each others faces, etc...

so my question is this.

Does being carded at a bar bother you and if so why?

No, doesn't bother me at all. I am 28, but I look like I am in my teens, and I get carded constantly, even sometimes for R movies (which is embarrassing). But its become such a pattern, that when my wife and I are doing something that requires my ID, I already have it ready, instead of fumbling around for it at the last second.

I think there was a discussion about this before about being a customer in a restaurant or a server, I forget. I think, hey, you are just doing your job IMHO. Its not like you are insulting me, its no big deal.

Being carded only bothers me in so much that I don't agree with the law. I don't blame the person asking for it.

No. It doesn't bother me at all. I have had two friends who tended bar and got fired and fined for serving alcohol to minors. It was a police sting operation, they were busy, and missed it. I am sympathetic to anyone who asks for my ID, even if it rarely happens anymore.

A couple of months ago I went into a bar with a couple of younger workmates (round about 28-30 range) and the barman asked for ID. I'd forgotten my stuff, mentioned to the barman, he said "it's ok, I wasnt asking you, you're plenty old enough". That bothered me.

Heh. I never quite understood why people continually use that excuse. I occaisonally bartended/bounced when things got busy at a bar a friend of mine used to manage, and always wanted to scream "think of a new excuse, already damn you!" 'Course, my favorite was the people who tried to enter the bar carrying an open bottle of beer, and would get pissed when I wouldn't let em in with it.

But no. I could care less about people carding me, but I do get mildly irritated when people card folks who are (and obviously look) 50+ years old. Use some freakin' common sense.

When I worked as a cashier in a grocery store during college, I hated selling alcohol because I hated having to card people. But after watching several people taken off of their registers and arrested for selling to an underaged undercover cop, I took no chances. I pretty much carded everyone, to protect myself. Nothing like applying to law school (and then for admission to the Bar) with an arrest on your resume.

One time, I refused to sell to a 24-year old guy who was with 4 teens, and he threw a fit. But I knew the law, and knew that I could refuse to sell to him if I suspected he was buying it for someone underage. They were just stupid to get in line with him. I even took shit from other customers for it.

I NEVER have been carded because I look much older than I am, or at least I used to. I didn't get carded when I was 16 and first bought liquor for friends, and I haven't since. I would LOVE to get carded, but realize it is never going to happen.

seriously, i cant stand people that get indignant because you refuse to break the law for them...it is a well known law, not something that you only hear about once every 25 years...no id, no drink..what is so damn hard about that...

that said, i did find it a bit amusing/annoying when i went to a beer festival with my father, who is turning 60. there is no way anyone looking at the two of us would not know we are father and son, so after they carded me (31) and saw how old i was, they turned and carded him. we just looked at each other and laughed.

The only time it upsets me is when I go to a certain movie theater in Indy. The local theaters, which are higher quality I might add either don't card me for R rated movies, or card me once at the time of buying the ticket.

The last time I went to this certain theater I was wearing basketball shorts and a T-Shirt. So I had no pockets. I took my ID up and bought my tickets. I was carded and sold the tickets.

I then took my money and ID back to the car since I didn't have pockets. I didn't know it at the time, but this theater has a hard on for carding. You are carded again as you enter the main entrace to the theater, the manager of the freakin place didn't card me and let me pass, but carded one of my friends. Then as we were walking into the theater of choice there was a teenage girl standing there and she asked for my ID. I really couldn't believe they were going to card us 3 times for one movie. I explained the situation to her and she wouldn't budge. So I went and talked to the manager who let me pass into the place without carding me and he said it was up to her. I found the whole situation laughable as I was about 4 years older than the girl carding me, not to mention 6'2 230 with a full gotee, and they were telling me I didn't look 17!

So in that situation, yes I minded being carded, just not the first time. As for buying smokes or if I tried to buy alcohol I wouldn't and don't mind being carded.

It kinda bothers me not to be carded anymore. When I had hair, I was always carded because apparently it made me look 15 or something. Now that I don't have hair, apparently I look 30ish. Not being carded now just reminds me that apparently I skipped 15 years in looks.

I only got mad once. I was in Vegas and Slots of Fun and some security prick walked up to me and told me to leave. I asked why and he told me I was not of age. I informed him politly that I was, and then he reponds, "whatever, give me your ID." I then told him to piss off and that I would spend my money else where.
Otherwise I dont mind being asked for my ID.

I don't mind getting carded. Its when I don't get carded, and there is a sign in plain view stating "We card anyone under 35 years of age" when I get annoyed. (I'm only 25 and would hope I don't look 35)
