Ok, I'm looking to start 2 FOFC Baseball leagues.

League 1
The first is a deep league- 16 teams, 6x6 H2H, and a lot of roster (24 spots, see below) so that's about half the league drafted. I'm still tweaking the final rules and would like any input. I think there needs to be more stuff for SPs and more IPs. It has a live draft, set for Sat Mar 4 6:30pm CST.

<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td class="typeStandard" align="left" valign="top" width="120">Roster Positions:</td> <td class="typeStandard" align="left" valign="top" width="410"> C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, IF, LF, CF, RF, OF, Util, SP, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL </td> </tr> <tr height="3"><td colspan="2">
</td></tr> <tr> <td class="typeStandard" align="left" valign="top" width="120">Stat Categories:</td> <td class="typeStandard" align="left" valign="top" width="410"> R, HR, RBI, SB, OBP, SLG, W, L, SV, K, ERA, WHIP </td> </tr> <tr height="3"></tr></tbody></table>League ID#: 94648
Password: dola

A couple of notes: I'm not wedded to either the stat categories or roster positions yet so I'll be tweaking those in the next few days. Any comments are welcome

League 2
The second is a "hardcore" league- 12 teams, 8x8 H2H, and a smaller roster (21 spots). I'm also still tweaking the final rules and would like input.

This one is going to be a slow live draft. For those unfamiliar, it's basically an email draft where a person has 24 hours to make their pick via email (or get list picked- too many and they get kicked from the league and another owner can join with their roster and finish the draft). This one will get started as soon as the rules are finalized and the league roster set- probably early next week.
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td class="typeStandard" align="left" valign="top" width="120">Roster Positions:</td> <td class="typeStandard" align="left" valign="top" width="410"> C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, SP, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL </td> </tr> <tr height="3"><td colspan="2">
</td></tr> <tr> <td class="typeStandard" align="left" valign="top" width="120">Stat Categories:</td> <td class="typeStandard" align="left" valign="top" width="410"> R, HR, RBI, SB, FPCT, AVG, OBP, SLG, W, L, SV, SVOP, ERA, WHIP, K/BB, K/9</td></tr></tbody></table>
League ID#: 94672
Password: doubledola

Other
There's one thing that won't fly, tho- I have saved FOFC leagues I have played in from year's past and if there's anyone who has abandoned leagues, they're going to get kicked out. One of the current hockey leagues is an 18 team league: we have a total of 3 abandoned teams and it's great. I'm going to be going over these lists once the league is getting closer to full and getting rid of people who have abandoned teams in the past. If there's a good reason, then PM me and I'll decide if you can stick around.

Also, I'd try to get a different mix of people in each league so try to pick one or the other. Tho, maybe later we can fill spots in one or the other if there aren't enough.

Both leagues have their charms- you need to both be quick on your feet and good at knowing the depth of large leagues in the larger one whereas the second one is more "hardcore" and you have to have the patience and persistence to put up with a slow, live email draft (frankly, my favorite format as it allows a decent amount of time to make your decision)

I am not familiar with "Save Opportunties" as a category, assuming that's what SvOp is.

Am I misunderstanding, os is this just some weird way to try to keep closers being worth a damn? And don't you end up basically rewarding all sorts of pitchers who just come into games in "close and late" situations, regardless of whether they are actually successful in their efforts?

And don't you end up basically rewarding all sorts of pitchers who just come into games in "close and late" situations, regardless of whether they are actually successful in their efforts?Whoops- I thought I had gotten rid of that. I originally wanted Sv/Blown Sv- kindof the W/L dichotomy where just because you can run the most pitchers out there for the week doesn't mean you win the counting stats. But I don't think there were BS's and I meant to change that but didn't.

I kindof wanted to do another RP stat since in an 8x8, RPs won't be nearly as valuable but, well, holds suck- I've played in leagues with holds before- it's stupid as it is so variable from month to month, you might as well be throwing darts at a dart board. And let's not even talk about year to year where the top 10 maybe have 1 or 2 repeats. And it's impossible to find stats for them.

It was like a a friend of mine who played in a 6x6 league last year and triples were a category to give more emphasis to spead. Triples?!? Chone Figgins with his multi-positions, SBs, and 3Bs might as well have been the MVP.

Instead, I added K's as a counting stat as there are a lot of rate stats in that league but not a lot of counting stats- gotta have both quality and quantity.

Any other suggestions?

Any other suggestions?

SII may be firmly in the minority here (and if that's the case, I'm fine keeping it as is), but I've never been a huge fan of h2h leagues in sports not named football. The hockey experience this year as reaffirmed that, as far as I'm concerned.

I mean, h2h is not horrible, by any means, but I find myself longing for straight-up rotisserie-style scoring again.

Don't suppose there's any chance of that? :)

sterlingice
02-14-2006, 01:42 PM
Probably not- I really am not a fan of roto. I like fantasy point h2h most or, in this case, stat h2h but roto is just so stale to me as you rarely see any movement in the standings beyond the first month. It's not to say you can't pick up a point or two, but changes are just really rare. In H2H, I like that you have to play every week and every week you can move and there's importance there.

SIFair enough.

Is it possible to do h2h without daily roster moves? With the hocky league, it seems like there's very little strategy...just move your guys in and out depending on whether or not they're playing. Needing to set a roster for a week ahead would, I think, require more decision-making.

The flip side is the potential for waning interest without the need for daily visits, but I guess that depends on how strong you feel the ownership group will be.

In "daily" leagues, I tend to only check twice a week (Sunday, Wednesday- before the off days) and it works just fine.

The problem with weekly changes is that pitching probables don't get solidified until 3-5 days in advance so if you can only put in moves on Sunday, you can extrapolate who your guy might pitch against but you also are wrong quite a bit because of injuries and managers fiddling with their rotations.

The other thing I don't really like about weekly is that you can't change up for injuries on the fly. Particularly with pitchers this is a big deal as I set a pretty high IP requirement per week (40) to limit LIMA (not Jose, the fantasy strategy) drafters- you need to have depth, not just draft a couple of elite pitchers and then sit back as they have just won all your rate stats for you. You actually have to throw 5-6 starts a week as well as your RPs.

Then there's what you mention with the lack of interest if you can't check it daily, at your leisure. Forget to set your lineup for a day, no big deal. Forget to set it for a week, people start dropping out.

I also could be backwards on this- but those are the reasons for daily moves. What's the downside of daily and the upside of weekly?

Time to go back to the last couple of year's threads- I could have sworn I put some notes in there for future legaue ideas just like I did in my fantasy football thread (I'm going to make the "perfect" football league next year or at least I keep getting steps closer).

Great news- I didn't find anyone in the "Hardcore" League who had dropped out in the previous 7 FOFC leagues I've played in and saved. Couple of things:

1) You have to have an even number of teams in a league to draft on Yahoo. Not sure what happens if you don't, but if we wind up with 13 or 15 or something, you may have to axe someone right before the draft. In the past, if you have an odd number of teams at the moment the draft started the Yahoo draft bot would delete the entire league. Not sure if that's still how they do it.

2) We have 11 rosters spots for batters, but only 7 for pitchers. I would be in favor of an additional SP or P spot (preferably SP to deter someone from hoarding closers).

For #2, this is a great time to discuss any possible rule changes since there won't be any after the draft.

For this particular one, since there are the same number of stat categories for pitchers and hitters, it doesn't really matter all that much. Frankly, having that many more hitters makes each worth less. I guess I could add an SP spot and also get rid of the UTIL spot to make it more even since we've already got OF and IF. As for the hoarding RPs, that's going to happen anyways, maybe I'll just change the P spot to SP because we all know that last P spot will be used for RP hoarders (not that you can easily do that in a big league and with L's counting as a category, that prevents it some).

Good job with everyone still active except SirFozzie who hasn't check his team in 2 weeks *glares in that general direction*. The Hippos aren't out to the greatest start. In fact, they're off to the worst start but hopefully we can start making a comeback this week as Benitez and Sabathia have gotten off the DL and Huff is about to with Baldelli and MacDougal still enjoying their spots in the trainer's room. msf518's Big Bangers are in first place after the first month. mrkilla's crazydoods are 2nd while fofc fantasy veteran toddiec and The Cover Team are in 3rd.

Now we're two months into the season. There are slim pickings on the ww in this league- there's just not much out there but the wire's not completely bereft of talent. Haven't seen any trades either until this week.

As for the inactives, Fozzie's team hasn't been touched in nearly 6 weeks and it shows as they're in last place :( mrkilla's has been over a month and it's a shame since he started out pretty well but has lost 4 weeks straight. Still could make the playoffs if that team got some maintenance.

msf518's Big Bangers are rolling the competition and haven't lost a weekly matchup yet. Masked's and TazFTW's teams are tied for 2nd, 14.5 points behind with toddiec's The Cover Team right behind them at 16.5 back. 5 thru 8 are within 3 points in an extremely tight race for those last 2 playoff spots.

My team's going to be dormant for 2 weeks as I can't log into it.

I'm likely done for the season since I read Pujols is hurt and is my lineup.

Heck, I can't remember the last lineup I put in.

Oh, c'mon. You can find other 1B. Sure they won't produce like he will but they can give good production.

Perhaps you didn't understand me. I CAN'T SWAP HIM OUT. As in, I can't log in to fantasy baseball here.

Ok, we've hit the halfway point (well, a little past it). Big Bangers still crushing everyone. The Cover Team have moved up into second, bumping Nine Masked Men into third and Houston has bumped up to fourth. The big mover, however, has been the Firebirds as they have jumped from 11th up to 5th. Go Chan Ho Go has dropped from 3rd to 6th but is still in the playoff picture. 7th thru 11th are within 7.5 but need to move up into 6th to make the playoffs.

Except for the last place Fozzie Bears, everyone's been active in the past two weeks so that's really cool to see but it does make it quite competitive. For next year, I'm definitely dropping a bench spot or two- there are just too many people stashed on benches to keep them away from other teams. Anyone with any other rules thoughts? Any bad categories or suggestions?

40 innings minimum is too high. In a normal week I almost always have to pick up an extra start or two off the FA wire, and this week I don't think anyone will meet it.

Yeah, I'm thinking next year I'll have 35IP. I don't want to drop it too much but 40 is too many.

FYI: This week there are no IP requirements.

Just a few weeks to go in the regular season and 2 weeks to go until the trading deadline. Haven't really had any major trades at all in the league despite all the activity from the owners as most of it is on the waiver wire. Aside from the still-defunct Fozzie Bears, the other 11 teams are still active.

The top 4 seem firmly ensconced in their positions- same rankings as last time, although anything can still happen. The battle for the last two playoff spaces are a bit more interesting as pretty much all 7 teams still have a shot. Firebirds and Go Chan Ho Go remain in 5 and 6 but there are a lot of teams in striking distance even with just 4 weeks to go.

I want to bump this to maybe get some playoff chatter going. I can't believe Masked stormed back and kicked my butt into third place in the last month or so. I could have used that homefield advantage in the playoffs! :) I barely held off SI at the end of the regular season as he was on a roll as well.

SI needs to do everyone a favor and knock off the Big Bangers who have been spanking us all season. Good luck to my playoff opponent Masked! Our series looks to be pretty close so far this week so maybe I can regain some of the dignity I lost over the past month.

This has been a great league to be a part of this season.

I had better not lose in the consolation bracket to a guy in Djibouti :)

I'm off to a "big bang" so far this week, down 11-0 after Monday and Tuesday. For some reason Jake Peavy was benched tonight which I never would have done except I've been filling out my lineups each night half asleep :p Still, got a good pitching performance from Ian Snell and my hitting wasn't bad but I need some help to get back on that side this week.

The fictional Yahoo Fantasy Baseball world is still recovering from the shock of arguably the greatest upset in the history of fictional organized sports. The mighty Big Bangers have fallen to the amazing streaking SI's Houston Hippopotami (he is the commish by the way......CONSPIRACY!!). The Hippos rode the back of one Robinson Cano (14 freakin RBI's in one week!?!??!!) to a berth in the Championship game.

We are all anxiously awaiting SI's press statement, but it may be a while because the last report out of Hippo-land was that SI disappeared into his office with a case of beer, 8 dozen chicken wings, and several Championship Hot or Not contestants.

That's "August waiver wire pickup" Robinson Cano. :) Before that, I was lumbering along with Jose Lopez from Seattle and saying to myself "wow, I could really use a 2B" and there he was on the WW because he was on the DL so I scooped him up and haven't looked back. Also don't forget Rich Hill who I picked up in time for the stretch run to throw a 10K 2-hitter last week.

What color is the sky in that world ;)

The Cover Team pulled off an equally impressive upset and they and the Hippos will battle the final two weeks for the trophy

Little late on the update, but wanted to finish off this thread and get thoughts from everyone about next season while this season is still fresh.

The #4 seed Hippos beat #3 seed The Cover Team in the 2 week finals. The Hippos hitters remained hot while the pitchers were adequate enough to not lose. #1 seed The Big Bangers showed that the previous week was just an unfortunately timed hiccup, crushing the #2 seed Nine Masked Men for 3rd place. In the consolation bracket, the Philly Chumps knocked off upstart #11 seed Twerp Sox for the consolation crown.

Aside from the Fozzie Bears who decided to take a nap starting in April, right after the draft, every team stayed active until the end (or at least until the playoffs started).

Again, looking for any rules thoughts on this season. Myself, I had a couple of thoughts tho I'm cherry picking a bit from others
-The 40 IP was just too much. 35 worked nice in the other league I was in but 40 was just a little too much. Any fewer than 35 and you can really pick and choose your spots and you don't need any pitching depth.
-Drop DL spots down to 1 from 2 so that you can't hide too many players there
-Go back to just using one UTIL hitter instead of an IF and OF
-Stat categories were pretty standard for a 6x6 so, while boring, pretty accurate tho closers are pretty useless in H2H leagues
