Whoa...when did Marquette take the lead?

Easy Mac

You can't go scoreless the last 3 1/2 minutes against a #2 seed and expect to win.

and yet t was easy to suspect they would win until the horn sounded.

Oh my, what a f'n finish ... what a fuck up by the clock operator ... and still exactly the kind of game I expected.

Good point.. Winthrop can't say they didn't have multiple chances to take control of this one.

First Round Games between two Cartel League Members ('Bama v. Marquette, NCSU v. Cal, etc..) really don't interest me much personally..

How about that Griz/Nevada game instead?

Agreed. I really thought they'd pull it out. And that shot was improbable. I wasn't sure what to think of them had the game gone to overtime.

I guess the more this is on, the more I'm starting to get that whole statistic about "lost productivity" at work.

I'm trying to tear myself away from this stuff and can't.

I thought the same as Jeebs here.. Location. Nevada v. BC one state over in Salt Lake City.. That's was my thought.

Looks like Montana is blowing that idea right out of the water though... And I guarantee BC is thanking the Griz for that.

That'd be great, just so we'd have to watch that whole state celebrate.

Because we've got nothing here. Not that we're rivals with them or anything, because we're not. Which is sorta silly. (Colorado State and BYU are Wyoming's sports rivals)

But then, Wyoming is Indian for "You silly morons, why are you making that place a state anyway?"

They just announced the game times for this evening.. The final game of the day in San Diego (Washington v. Utah State) is scheduled to start an hour and ten minutes after the next to last game of the day.. I wonder if CBS will switch everyone over to this game later on tonight??

Or, will it be like the UCLA/Belmont game now where the vast majority of the country gets to enjoy Wheel of Fortune & Jeporady instead.. Today and tomorrow are the only two days where this tournament takes place on a weekday afternoon. Can we skip the local and CBS Evening News a couple of times?? Please!!

I like it here too, believe it or not. I just like to make fun of things from time to time...because it's sorta a shame how backwards some stuff is. But you can say that for a lot of places.

The short version I moved here almost two years ago, after I was in between colleges after I spent 4 years in the Air Force. Coming here was largely a financial decision, but its been a great choice. And honestly, after I left the Air Force, I always said that if I didn't end up leaving my old school (a DIII school, where I played tennis for a season) that I'd hopefully end up someplace that had D1 sports and so..it's sorta funny that it's here of all places, to finish up but..I'll take it.

Because being a D3 fan gets old since no one cares.

What the hell was with the TV coverage this afternoon? Not only did I have to watch the entire UF game, which was a blowout with 10 minutes left and ended up a 26 point margin, but then they went immediately to the local news instead of covering the last 50 seconds of a 1-point Alabama/Marquette game. And right now, LSU is easily beating Iona, yet we're not being switched to the GW/ UNC-Wilm game. Is this CBS' attempt to force us to buy the pay-per-view package? This is fucking pissing me off.

They were ranked in the preseason. They were a dominant team against almost everybody they played (however weak) during the regular season. College basketball coaches and analysts saw it fit to continually rate them in the Top 10 in the country throughout the season.

I've watched him play for 4 years at least once a season (a few more than that cause of seeing him at the CAA tourney or if W&M and the Dub are rarely televised)... he is quite good..

BS on this. They lost to a decent NC State team on the road (I was mistaken - they lost just one regular season game).

They beat a ranked Maryland team. The rest of their schedule wasn't great. But in their defense they really did just run wild over their conference opponents who had a very surprising down year. Other than a 3-game run near the end of the season, they scored 75+ points in basically every single conf. game.

Well, I'm fairly certain that even most UF fans wouldn't care to watch the last 3 minutes of a 25 point game when another game is so close. I understand the connection and all, but it was BS. Then again, if there was som contractual thing, maybe they knew they couldn't stick with the close game anyway, so they never switched to it. Either way, I, as the fan, lost.

well, its really a 9-seed, and they dominated a mid-major league (mid-major at best this season). By dominating, that's probably getting them a 4-5 at most any year (Gonzaga is the only mid-major that gets seeded high, and thats after years of regular season success). So that averages about a 7. Seeing as a few mid-majors were 1-2 seeds below where they should have been (Winthrop, Zags...), then a 9 is about right.

No, the polls said they were a 2 (or 3 maybe) seed. The RPI said they were an 8-9 seed. Given a little more weight to the polls (as the committee typically does in seeding shoe-in teams), they should be a 4-5 seed.

That was a Maryland team that at the time was not missing their best player. They had 11 wins (including one over BC) and only 4 losses with McCray, with 3 of those losses coming to Duke, Gonzaga, and GW.

As for their SOS, the RPI is a total joke at this point. Shouldn't the goal of a ratings formula be determine which team is better, who would win a game? Take a look at the RPI top 50 and try not to laugh at the notion of it as a predictor.

Does anyone think the committee would ever consider folding the NIT in a few years once the contract with MSG ends and say, expand the NCAA tournament again? I think some would like to give top teams a bye, while making other teams win more games to get to the title..which is frankly, why I think they added the play-in game as an experiment before they add more teams down the road.

Thoughts?

That was a Maryland team that at the time was not missing their best player. They had 11 wins (including one over BC) and only 4 losses with McCray, with 3 of those losses coming to Duke, Gonzaga, and GW.

As for their SOS, the RPI is a total joke at this point. Shouldn't the goal of a ratings formula be determine which team is better, who would win a game? Take a look at the RPI top 50 and try not to laugh at the notion of it as a predictor.

McFly, I stopped talking about RPI a long time ago...

Their SOS is not their RPi.

Agreed. I like that there is a post-season option for teams that do well. I just wonder what they'll do with it, because...the NCAA only cares about cash and it's obvious that no one cares about the NIT, but they'll need to find a way to make it a revenue generator.

Not too surprised by this.. SU may be out of gas. This happens sometimes when bubble teams have to win so many games in a row just to be a part of this.

Once again, this is BS. Just like the GW game, when they cut to it far too late, I'm still watching a 14-point Duke win when TX A&M and Syracuse are in a tight game with 2 minutes left. I think CBS is purposely doing this shit to make people want to buy the pay-per-view package. Southern was a nice story and all, but at this point, they're done. And even if they start to come back, the Syracuse game will probably be over by the time the Duke game gets down to the wire, so they could switch us back with no problem.

I'm starting to think the same thing. In the south, it must have been the decision to stick with UF this afternoon and Duke tonight, no matter what. Because there's no logical explanation for this. And in year's past, they've done a far better job of switching out of boring blowouts. This is a travesty.

Radii

All this talk of the "cartel" and of mid majors vs big conferences is getting way, way out of hand. Higher seeds generally win games in the tournament, whether they be major conference teams or mid majors. The selection committee has been fairly consistant in terms of where the at large bids have come from, this year is no different, its only moronic questions from the media that have blown this shit up.

1) top performing mid majors are going to end up with similar RPIs as middling major conference teams every year. middling major conference teams that finish well or have a number of big wins are going to be given preference over mid majors(Seton Hall, look at some of their wins this year, lots of quality). Mid majors are going to be given preference over middling major conference teams that couldn't beat anyone, or didn't play a tough non conference schedule(Florida State/Maryland, how many quality wins did these guys have?)

2) Ask any NCAA fan and they'll tell you this weekend is so great primarily because of how much fun it is to see upsets and how unpredictable the first weekend is. So I don't think anything would change if there were a lot more upsets than normal. And as to calling it a fluke, many would, as they probably should. The number of low seeds advancing to the sweet 16 each year is pretty consistant I believe.

As for this "rise of the mid majors" that people seem to be ranting about in this thread, the results so far seem to indicate that this is a year like any other, with some scares, some upsets, but most of the higher seeds winning:

higher seeds went 12-4 yesterday. Expect more of the same today(though there are 3 8/9 games today, that might change things, go 9 seeds!!! :P). Of the four lower seeds that won games, only one involved a small conference team beating a "big 6" team(UW Milwaukee over Oklahoma). The other three were two big 6 teams playing each other, Texas A&M over Syracuse and Alabama/Marquette. The final one was a Nevada team rising up to earn a 5 seed, but getting upset by Montana.

16 games yesterday. The breakdown:

3 games between 2 "Big 6" teams
2 games between 2 "other" teams
In the remaining 11 games between a big 6 conference team and a small conference team, the "Big 6" teams won 9 games, and lost 2. One of those losses wasn't even an upset, Wichita State over Seton Hall.

In conclusion, this thread would be a lot more fun to read if there wasn't so much angst and everyone would STFU about who belongs in the tourney. Claiming that the results of one game have anything to do with who belongs and who didn't is a joke. The MVC could have gone 0-4 these two days and it wouldn't say anything concrete about the talent level at the top of the MVC compared to Maryland/FSU/Cincinnat, just that the MVC had a bad 4 game run. These kind of arguments are supposed to end before noon on Thursday. Go underdogs, except for UNC.

Didn't see any of it, but did Wisconsin pull a Seton Hall or what? Blowout W by a Arizona team that is certainly not anywhere near one of their best under Lute Olsen.

Wisconsin didn't have much of a team this year. They weren't highly regarded pre-season (I didn't figure them to even be in the tourney), had a hot stretch early, and ended up with a much better record than their talent should have got. They really only have one decent player. I didn't expect them to win today, although I think in my bracket I had them in my sweet 16.

Hasn't Stan Heath done a decent job at Arkansas? This was a program that wasn't fairing incredibly well when he took over for Nolan.. Yes, the program was a member of the elite under Richardson for years, but in his final few seasons they slipped a bit.

Agreed, but shouldn't he be doing more with the talent he has? A few of the talking heads have said that they have top 10 talent in the country, but don't get the results.

And honestly, who had Northwestern over Iowa?? That has to be an upset in almost everybody's bracket... Although i had them losing to West Virginia next game anyway.

4% of Yahoo Fantasy players had NW over Iowa

So is Stan Heath done at Arkansas?

Please let the answer be no. And if it's yes, then stay the hell away from Doc Sadler...

I can't beleive Iowa let a 15 point lead slip away like that. They basically had the game won and blew it. This was finally their year to make a run with an all upperclassmen starting lineup. Well at least there's still Northern Iowa for us Iowa folks.

Monmouth isn't looking that shabby either...

My gf has picked a ton of upsets and leads our bracket, simply because of upset scoring. She thinks she's some sort of genius and I'm like, "you picked some retarded upsets. Let's not get carried away." Hell, she had no idea who the schools are. And she's picked Monmouth over Villanova. If that happens, I'm not watching anymore.

lol

I want this thing to go further, just so she shuts up.

Oral Roberts doesn't look slow like a lot of 16 seeds do compared to their opponents.

Villanova 10, Monmouth 6... with 8 minutes left in the half????

NW St. is this year's Bucknell, blowing up more than a few brackets.

Not as many as you (or me) might have thought I suspect.

http://tournament.fantasysports.yahoo.com/men/pickdistribution&tid=266605&round=2

54% had Iowa winning in round 2/going to the Sweet Sixteen
but ...
only 19% had Iowa winning in round 3/going to the Elite Eight
and only 3% had Iowa winning in round 4/going to the Final Four.

You can usually survive missing some Sweet 16 teams as long as they the ones you had going much deeper than that. And it doesn't look like too many people thought Iowa was going really deep.

Villanova may advance without getting past the 30 mark.
10-6, at the 8 Minute Timeout.

LoneStarGirl
03-17-2006, 02:37 PM
Why?

I know... what is to hate? They are a team full of freshman and sophomores (save for Carney) that is taking the basketball world by storm. Everybody is ragging on them and expecting them to be the first number 1 team to fall to a 16. It is hard not to root for them.
