This is a bit ho-hum for me compared to later in the day, I have all of the favorites winning and two teams (BC and Ok) going to the S16 and losing there.

I think UWM has a very good chance at beating OU in the first session. But yeah, if BC loses, I'll be crying already.

BC is the opposite of UT right now. BC is the trendy pick to go farther than they are "supposed to" whereas UT is the trendy pick to go out early. So if BC loses, I bet it blows up a lot of brackets as I think a lot have them in their Final 4.

(It's been fun listening to Tony Kornheiser this week where he basically just has guests on all show giving their brackets).

JeeberD

The only one that worries me, Jon, is BC. They looked impressive against Duke the other day, but for some reason I have a feeling that Nevada and Nick Fah-weak-ass'll take care of 'em.

I've never been able to do a bracket just to win. I have to make a certain amount of decisions based on what I want to happen vs. what I think will happen. It's more fun that way for me ;).

(10) Seton Hall v. (7) Wichita St.
(11) UW-Milwaukee v. (6) Oklahoma

For the money bracket at the office.

And UWM I've got into the 16. BoCo and Seton drop in the 2nd.

I am totally and completely unimpressed with Seton Hall this year. I'm hoping they help to prove the fact that the top mid-majors are rightfully considered better than the mid-bottom power conference teams.

Eh, they are one of my several "well, since I know jack shit about either team, we'll go with THIS ONE" picks.

I'm more concerned about Kansas and Arizona, and how they will manage to fuck me this year. Like always. Those two teams destroy my brackets every single year.

I don't know what's best about this weekend, but here are a few things to which I look forward:

-Opening CBS music.
-My wife watching hoops with me.
-Not feeling bad about eating pizza and/or burritos for four days.
-Masters commercials.
-March Madness on Demand at work.

And a few things I don't like:
-Annoying chicks complaining because they picked Gonzaga to win it all.
-JJ Reddick.
-Billy Packer.

Was tempted to take Pacific too- I think that BC can lose to them- just like last year-which BC team will show up? How many teams will the Shockers actually shock this year? I have them going as far as playing either Mich St or NC- probably Mich St.

to add to digamma's "look forward to" file- the recaps or snippets of great moments- that was the best thing about the tourney selection show this year- the lead-in recap!

That Arena in downtown Jacksonville (site of the OU/UWM Game) is beautiful.. Right next door to Alltel Stadium and the new Minor League Ballpark (Double AA Team plays there)..

Interesting that the Arena was built with no major indoor sports team here.. Rumor is a Arena League team will be in Jax soon, and maybe Minor League Hockey, but that's it.

A bit of a Pre-Excerpt from the Duke/Southern game later on this evening from Greensboro..

Billy Packer: “Oh, God, please! Please don’t let this happen! Please, God, please – please don’t let Duke lose.”

Jim Nantz: “You know, Billy. Speaking of ‘lose’ – America can’t lose if they watch the world premiere of ‘Locusts’ right here on CBS on April 24th.”

Packer: “Fouls! Fouls! Constant fouling! Duke is getting fouled all the time, even when they’re in timeouts but the refs aren’t calling it. It’s a crime, I tell you – a crime!”

Nantz: “If you don’t like crimes, Billy, then be sure to watch ‘CSI: Miami,’ Monday at 10:00 p.m. on CBS.”

Packer: “No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! It’s over. They’ve lost.”

Nantz: “Sorry, Billy. CBS doesn’t broadcast ‘Lost.’ But I will say that Duke’s ‘Numb3rs’ just didn’t stack up tonight. It’s been an ‘Amazing Race’ for them though, but they’re ‘Gone Without A Trace.’”

Packer: “I don’t care what the scoreboard says. Duke is still the greatest team ever and Mike Krzyzewski is the greatest coach of all time.”

Nantz: “And before we go, viewers, please don’t forget to tune in to the premier of the critically-acclaimed new series here on CBS: ‘Billy Packer Has Zero Credibility, Not That I Do Either, But Why Must I Do Games With This Guy?’ hosted by me, Jim Nantz, beginning after the NCAA Tournament.”

A bit of a gripe here...

Why does there always have to be at least one 1st Round Game that basically the entire country minus the west coast does not see?

This year it is UCLA/Belmont.. Gametime is 5:10pm Eastern.. I understand the time zone issue, but still.. CBS pays all of these dollas' for this tourney and basically skips one game for the vast majority of America.

Anyone else notice this?

As much as I dislike the way ESPN does things anymore, it would be much more beneficial as a College Hoops fan if the "Family of Networks" they offer covered the First and Second Round action. Heck, CBS only offers regional coverage for the darn Regional Semis (next Thursday and Friday Evenings).. Could you imagine regional coverage for New Year's Day Bowl Games? Ridiculous.

I understand the reasoning Jon, but am still miffed by it. This tournament is HUGE.. CBS in my opinion, doesn't give it the amount of TV time it deserves.

What you're discounting, I think, (or wishing you could discount) is that CBS doesn't own most of the local affiliates & the locals do NOT want to deal with that much basketball. Like most stuff, it's a money thing.

Most markets can make same/more money selling their 5p & 6p news spots and their Entertainment Tonight/Jeopardy/whatever spots than they can make on these early round games (as the networks don't take away most of the commericial inventory). Plus they don't have to piss off their regular advertisers by bumping them out of their spots. PLUS they don't risk losing 52 week a year viewers to other stations that might decide they like if they sampled their product. PLUS there's plenty of markets where some of the basketball matchups (early rounds, non-weekend, non-prime) don't draw as many viewers as the regular programming. The option, of course, is for CBS to make the games optional & let the affiliates decide what to carry but that would create even more trouble (since special event viewers tend to be more vocal about a decision not to carry).

And if you think the affiliates have a lot of gripes there, they all pale in comparison to the uproar that CBS would create by putting the games on, say, some of the lower tier cable networks they have connections to (because the local affilliates do not want to compete with those outlets for the NCAA-BB advertising dollars that are available in their market).

Louie Orr has been on thin ice this whole season. This sorry performance by SH may be enough for him to get the can.

That should've been the case in here in Wyoming, given most people wanted the coach gone. But that run in the conference title game gave him momentum and now, they're going to keep his non-recruiting useless self and so...he might parlay that game into keep his job, even if they lose..because they had no business being in the tourney anyway.

MK, sounds like you're as much behind the mid-majors as I am...

If today pans out well and the mid-major at-larges continue to beat the power conferences, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see an interview with Packer tonight...

Oh, I am. UCF Grad with a girlfriend that attended Southern Illinois University. I am a huge BCS/Power Conference Basher, and always will be.

This comment from Neuqua is a previous thread regarding at-large tourney selections describes my feelings very well;

They have it their way in football and now they want it their way in basketball too.

Sak, it's not an even playing field though. Cincy and Wake have much higher athletic budgets because of the BCS money pouring in. Their facilities are better, they can pay more for coaches, etc. It's not an even playground. Even with that, I do think the top teams in the MVC can compete (read: not win) some of the so called BCS conferences. And I consider that a remarkable feat in its own right."

Somewhere around here I posted my general thoughts which is something I heard from some commentator this week.

You have two ways to select the 34 at-large teams.

A) The 34 teams with the best chance to win the tournament.
B) The 34 teams with the best seasons.

I think it should be B, simple as that.

I'm pretty sure there's a rule against that.

MylesKnight
03-16-2006, 01:54 PM
The rule states that if the clock is under three-tenths of a second, the only way to score is by a tip.. Not enough time to catch and shoot.

By the way, the CAA should have had three. Remember GMU beat Wichita a few weeks back at their place in the BracketBuster. Hofstra knocked out GMU in the CAA Tourney and deserved a bid. If the Valley got four, the CAA should have gotten all three of there's.

DT, how do you see BC recruiting going in years to come now that they no longer compete in conference with schools from the northeast? Will you see a larger amount of players from southern states because of this? Will this possibly turn off recruits who want to play college basketball in the northeast now that trips to Syracuse, UConn, SJU, 'Nova, Pitt, Gtown, etc., are no longer available?

Does the move hurt or help in your eyes? In my eyes it helps, no doubt. BC itself is still in the northeast of course, and there is no doubt that being in the ACC competing ACC schools will mean a larger porportion of players coming from the southern states/tobacco row. BC will be competing with Duke and UNC and NC State and Maryland for recruits, as opposed to competing with Syracuse and Pitt (because frankly UConn doesn't compete with the rest of the Big East for recruits). And IMO, as long as we remain a strong program (as we have been with this past recruiting class) we should begin to attract players of roughly that quality (perhaps not a Reddick, but a step below that). Rice for example was heavily recruited by (I believe) UNC (maybe NC State?) but chose BC. Haynes I hear was heavily recruited by Illinois, Oaklahoma and others. And I'm not sure who they have coming in this next year (honestly I am not THAT much of a Bball fan to follow recruiting), but I hear it's a good class. I think for a couple years we may end up with a lower-quality class than Duke/UNC, but eventually I think DeFilippo (the AD) hopes that a move to the ACC will result in us being on par with Duke/UNC as far as recruiting. Academically of course it's a whole different ballgame, and that will have some effect on our recruiting. But overall I think it's a positive move and the quality of our recruiting classes can't help but go up (Smith and Dudley FYI were barely recruited by anyone coming out of HS and look where they've taken this team). If we can put in a few more years of being the 2/3 team in the ACC then I think we will begin to be taken seriously by some of the low 1-st tier guys that Duke/UNC recruit.

What if too many "Lower Tiered Schools" won too much in any given tournament? Seriously, would the powers that be at CBS, the NCAA, and the BCS/Big Six Cartel do something to make sure this did not occur again? What if the biggest names in the Regional Finals next weekend were Wichita State and UAB? Would the "Cartel" take their ball and go home, so to speak?

Would College Hoops become a similar version of postseason College Football in terms of availability?

I originally had Nevada losing to Montana in my bracket, but changed it at the last minute.

Montana is therefore guaranteed to win.

That's what I did in the Seton Hall game, just this morning. Because my Seton Hall pick was really just a homer pick anyway..but then I got sensible.

This game needs to hurry up and end. I gotta get in the shower in fifteen minutes, dammit.

Does this Wingate guy normally scream and stare down the baseline every time he scores? Or is that new for the tournament?

What if too many "Lower Tiered Schools" won too much in any given tournament? Seriously, would the powers that be at CBS, the NCAA, and the BCS/Big Six Cartel do something to make sure this did not occur again? What if the biggest names in the Regional Finals next weekend were Wichita State and UAB? Would the "Cartel" take their ball and go home, so to speak?

Would College Hoops become a similar version of postseason College Football in terms of availability?

Dude. Loosen your tinfoil hat. It's cutting off the supply of blood to your brain.

And for those who pay a lot more attention to college bball than me...is Tenn just not very good this year? (And/or really overrated?)

That's funny Fozzie.. College Athletics are what they are though.. The Big Six Conferences want it all, and will do everything they can to create every advantage for themselves possible. That's why it's great to see them go down. :)

If Tennessee does get by, I wonder if Wichita State would actually be favored as a 7 Seed over a #2.

GO WINTHROP though!

Wichita v. Winthrop is Round #2, Let's Go!!!

Florida, the only heavily favored team to take care of bidness as expected thus far today. They'll get UW-Milwaukee on Saturday.

I think that impression probably depends on when you see them. For most of the last month they've looked mediocre at best. Earlier in the year they looked pretty darned good, better than anybody in the SEC.

I really believe that the problem as much as anything lately has been that they simply don't have any clue what it's like to play at this level; i.e. the problems look more mental than physical or strategic ( like the airball FT). The pressure most surely has gotten to them in both the SEC tourney & today.

Winthrop has got to work the ball around.. Standing around and killing time for tough shots at the end of the clock is not working.

I like UWM to play well with Florida.. Problem is the game will be a Gay-tor Reunion down the road in Jax (an hour or so from Gainesville).

I decided that the only reason Air Force got in, was because the committee didn't want the Mountain West to be a one-bid league.

Did the Tennessee player just throw the ball into the backcourt???? Was that over and back??

You can't go scoreless the last 3 1/2 minutes against a #2 seed and expect to win.
