you know, technically, if you are married and you bang a married woman who's not your wife, it will be "while you cheat on your wife" everytime... :D

I came across this "Dear Prudence" letter through the MSN homepage this morning. Quite a good laugh.

http://www.slate.com/id/2216714/?GT1=38001

Dream Lover
I cheated on my wife while sleepwalking. What do I do now?

Dear Prudence:
I did something recently that concerns me on many levels. I am under a large amount of stress because I'm in an unhappy marriage (which we're trying to work out) and because my company laid me off. I am under treatment for depression. A week ago, my doctor doubled the dosage of my antidepressant and, because I'm not sleeping well, he prescribed Ambien. On Saturday morning, I confused the vials and took two Ambien. I told my wife what happened and that I would probably sleep all day and went to bed. At around 10 p.m., my wife commented on how productive I had been: mowing the lawn, cleaning up, grocery shopping. I remembered none of this and said so. She said her only concern was that I left for "errands" and returned two hours later with nothing in hand. I talked to my doctor Monday, and he told me Ambien can cause amnesia and that some people have reported walking, driving, and cooking in their sleep. I know now what filled the missing two hours. This afternoon, I got a call from a woman who called me "lover" and asked when I wanted to come back. She called me her f--k buddy. This is a woman I had talked to only twice before in social situations. I do not even know where she lives; maybe I phoned her for directions. I do find her attractive, but I am stunned that I did something like this. My wife is vindictive, and if I say anything to her, it will end our marriage. I do not want to continue a relationship with the other woman. What should I do?

—Scared Sleepless

Dear Scared,
It's hard to believe that the pharmaceutical industry has already solved two of our most vexing problems: How to get men to do weekend chores, and how to induce attractive strangers to have sex with you while being able to swear that you haven't cheated. If this gets around, soon we'll be living in a world where people are gobbling Ambien out of Pez containers. Driving, eating, even trying to cast congressional votes while under the influence of Ambien are all well-documented. Scroll around the Internet and you will also find individual accounts of Ambien-fueled sex—which the nondrugged participants claim is more creative and uninhibited than when their partner is awake. However good you may have been in bed, you need to keep the other woman from contacting you and asking for further services. Call her and try to explain. Tell her that, as hard as it is to believe, you have recently been prescribed several medications, you accidentally mixed them up, and as a result you have no memory of the events of the weekend. Say you're very sorry if you behaved irresponsibly but that you can't be in touch with her. Don't ask for details—you want to preserve your amnesiac deniability. And since you don't know what you did, you're hardly in a position to confess anything to your wife. From now on, when you have trouble drifting off, forget the Ambien and brew yourself a nice cup of chamomile tea.

It's clearly BS, but it makes a great story. Much better than that drunk lady in the stadium restroom.

This seems like a rather severe and unfortunate side effect for a sleeping pill. "I wanted to get some sleep, but instead i stayed up and did some chores." You'd think they'd be working on that.

AshleyMadison.com gives Giants and Jets $25 million offer to put name on New Meadowlands Stadium (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/2010/06/10/2010-06-10_ashleymadisoncom_gives_giants_and_jets_25_million_offer_to_put_name_on_new_meado.html)

Could the New Meadowlands Stadium (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/New+Meadowlands+Stadium) become the home of the Big Blue Home-wrecking crew?
Not likely. But the opportunity is there, now that the Giants - - and the Jets - - have received a $25 million offer for naming rights to their new stadium from a dating website that targets people interested in committing adultery. According to TMZ.com (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/TMZ.com+Inc.), the site - - AshleyMadison.com (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/The+Ashley+Madison+Agency+Ltd.) - - offered to pay that sum for a five-year deal, which would carry them through the New York Super Bowl in 2014 (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Super+Bowl+XLVIII).

I'm pretty sure it's going to take more than $25M to put your name on the stadium (I seem to remember deals being in the $2-$5M per year for 25/30 years range) but I guess this gets them some free publicity.

I know it's 8 games (plus 2 preseason) vs 81 games, but the Mets got $20MM per from Citi. I imagine having the Super Bowl will automatically add serious coin to the naming rights.

I am sure that AM threw that up so that it could get rejected so then it could go viral as the "too hot for the SB" ad.

The Super Bowl should make that backfire one time. "Congratulations Bang Bros! Your ad has been accepted! We expect your check for $2.3 million for 30 seconds of airtime within the next 48 hours. Have a great day."

I've seen this spot for a while but never paid much attention to it. I thought it was odd for an anti-AM ad, but there's a lot of crazy people out there.

Viewing it more in depth, it does appear to be a very clever ad for AM. No one's going to take a a real ad for AM, and this about the only way you could pull it off. If indeed it is an AM ad, it's somewhat genius.

I say somewhat because I'm not sure it's ever wise to attack your own company in an ad. But I'm sure there are people who are now aware of AM due to this ad, and the ad probably didn't change their opinion on the legitimacy of AM.

The second he drops the word guaranteed it's clearly an AM ad. Not to mention squeezing the logo in every screen. I didn't think it was that subtle.

They have been promoting their site quite bluntly as the place you go to cheat on your wife/husband. It is what it is, I don't think this is much different that the standard they've already set. If you truly feel that AM is wrong or are swayed by an "Attack" like that, you were never part of the demographic.

Imagine pulling up to the two-timer terminal at the airport known locally as Infidelity International.
Potentially, it could happen. If Pittsburgh International Airport's naming rights are put up for sale, a Toronto-based online dating service is keenly interested in acquiring them.
Like most dating sites, Ashley Madison seeks to unite people with similar interests. Unlike those other sites, Ashley Madison caters to those who already are united and whose interests center around extramarital activity.
"If your airport decided to go in that direction, then, yes, we'd seriously consider tendering an offer," company CEO Noel Biderman said on Thursday. "We'd love to throw our hat in the ring."

I love this gem:

"Giving mothers a chance to explore their options can be healthy for their marriage and actually prevent divorce," Ashley Madison founder and president Noel Biderman said in a release.

"Loneliness is a powerful driver that requires people to change their circumstances and having a discreet affair allows women to take care of themselves while protecting their privacy and allowing them to stay in their marriage."

Dude I work with just discovered a fraudulent charge made against his corporate card - $24. He phoned up the bank and the charge was made against a vendor who a google search revealed was a pseudonym for Ashley & Madison. This might have been suspicious if not for the fact that he is also very, very gay.

To top it off, the bank told him that they'd stopped a second charge that was attempted - for $11,000 - to a cupcake company based in the US, of all things.

Also, it's unclear to me whether email addresses are all actual accounts, or whether Ashley Madison simply owned some of the addresses for spam purposes.

Almost None of the Women in the Ashley Madison Database Ever Used the Site (http://gizmodo.com/almost-none-of-the-women-in-the-ashley-madison-database-1725558944)

This is a fantastic read on the data of what was dumped.

From the article:
About two-thirds of the men, or 20.2 million of them, had checked the messages in their accounts at least once. But only 1,492 women had ever checked their messages. It was a serious anomaly.

The writer concludes:

They were not created by women wanting to hook up with married men. They were static profiles full of dead data, whose sole purpose was to make men think that millions of women were active on Ashley Madison.

When you look at the evidence, it’s hard to deny that the overwhelming majority of men using Ashley Madison weren’t having affairs. They were paying for a fantasy.

Can confirm that its pretty easy if you have an e-mail address that gets mistakenly used by many other people (for example a common first initial + last name) to see an Ashley Madison account created for your e-mail in like 2010, laugh about that, send it to spam and forget about it until Ashley Madison gets hacked and then remember "oh, shit, my e-mail got used for that way back when didn't it?"

But, I would say that if I was married or in a relationship when that happened to me I would not have just laughed it off. Would have done something about that the second I saw the registration e-mail.

miked

I actually know that dude, and I believe him. Right now, I have over 200 messages in my hotmail junk folder that I will not go through. Also, I usually use that email to sign up for things, so it's not out of the realm that I will get 40-50 regular messages per day (maybe 1 from my dad who forgets I use gmail) and I just highlight all and delete after a quick scan. Since emails have been sold and things like that, I also will see pr0n type emails even though I've never had an account at those places (meet hot girls in your area, make your peni bigger, etc). So if somebody like Dutch with a similar name used my email, it would be possible I had absolutely no idea.

Fidatelo
08-28-2015, 07:30 AM
Yeah I get signed up for things by other people a lot with my email address. Mostly legit stuff like Hotel loyalty programs or even someone's Scarborough Hockey Association registration, but a couple times it's been pr0n or whatever. It's really annoying, but after trying unsuccessfully to unsubscribe to some of the things I've just given up. I'll mark the first couple emails as spam (if they don't just start that way) and then Gmail takes care of the rest. I almost never review my spam folder, maybe like once every 6 months I'll scan it for a lark.

Kodos
08-28-2015, 07:39 AM
I have a dedicated spam email account. Whenever I have to sign up for anything, I use that account. Then I have any mail not sent from someone in my address book delivered to the junk mail. Every now and then, I look through it and delete the crap.

Meanwhile, my real account remains pristine.

Some more good data analysis from the data leak.

To the Ashley Madison “guest,” or non-paying member, it would appear that he was being personally contacted by eager women. But if he wanted to read or respond to them, he would have to shell out for a package of Ashley Madison credits, which range in price from $60 to $290. Each subsequent message and chat cost the man credits. As documents from company e-mails now reveal, 80 percent of first purchases on Ashley Madison were a result of a man trying to contact a bot, or reading a message from one.

There's no way Ashley Madison can survive this, right? Between the data breach and this kind of information, are people still going to pay for subscriptions to this site?

But survive they have, apparently.

Now with 60 million users, a figure that's apparently (allegedly) been verified by an Ernst & Young audit (the same firm that verified the end of the bot program after its discovery)

They paid out $11.2 million to settle the class-action suit filed after the 2015 scandal, and the founding CEO resigned.
