I'm moving to Germany next week and bringing the family dog. But the dog can't go until the heat restriction is lifted in September. And because it's an 80lb lab, the costs are apparently astronomical.

$1500 for the dog's one way ticket.

I think the airlines have me confused with somebody who makes a crap load of money.

(Telling the wife it would be cheaper to drop the dog off in the woods and get a new one in Germany didn't go over so well, I suggest nobody else try that problem solving technique.)

$1500? The bitch better get a 1st class seat for that.

Dress the dog up in a tee-shirt and jeans, tell the airline that the dog is your child and has "special needs," and then buy a regular ticket for the dog. They won't dare question you.

It cost us a similar amount flying a Chow from the UK to Australia. The dog's fare was greater than a human's.

Do you not have a similar cost also for quarantine? I'd be surprised if Germany doesn't require you to keep the dog in quarantine for a few months.

The wife and I adopted a puppy from the pound back in the end of May. We've had him for just over two months now. If someone said the only way we could keep was to pay $1,500, I'd do it without batting an eye.

Still, $1,500 is not chump change.

U.S. citizens should now be able to get a "pet passport" that allows a properly-vaccinated dog EU entry without a quarantine period.
