Anyone else see the Emmitt Smith/Jerry Rice thing on Sunday NFL Countdown? That was funny. :D

So it was Jerry Rice that corrupted T.O.

Yeah, the Emmitt/Jerry bit was the funniest thing I've seen on that show in a long time.

Can't wait to see the new packages for Bush in the NO game, as well as my Eagles hopefully beating the Giants..

Bad-example

-- Art Shell says that only a couple of the nine sacks taken by Raiders quarterbacks last Monday were on seven-step drops, so shorter drop-backs aren't necessarily the solution. One solution is not to play against Shawne Merriman. Another would be a nine-step drop, which would result in the two defensive ends colliding head-on.

I thought this quote from the Betting Fool was pretty funny. http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2006/09/17/SPG4LL76AB1.DTL

Yeah, I don't think that Parley is going to work out for you. The Eagles' run defense looks very good early, and now they are starting to get more pressure on Manning and they just caused what could have been called a fumble (I don't think his arm was coming forward yet..) Either way, the Eagles already have 4 sacks and it seems like they are starting to take control of this game.

Eaglesfan27
09-17-2006, 01:07 PM
Now, Eli gets away with a BS grounding. He wasn't out of the tackle box. Nevermind, they called it late! :)

Sadly, the Raiders game is one of the games I'm getting this week. I'm not sure it's possible that I could be watching a worse game. Thank God the Eagles/Giants game is on the other channel. How I miss my DTV. :(

Chris Simms playing like garbage in Atlanta. Vick playing pretty well.

Two comments, both about NFL Countdown this morning:

1. The Emmitt Smith/Jerry Rice bit was hilarious. I normally don't even watch the show, so I feel lucky that I happened to catch it today when that thing was on.

2. I thought Tom Jackson had the best line of the day. When asked if the Raiders should panic or have patience, he said (I'm paraphrasing), "The Raiders can't defend the pass, they have no pass protection, they can't defend the run, their running game doesn't work, and their passing game is questionable. As a former Denver Bronco, I think the Raiders should stay the course and stick with what they're doing." Absolute gold. :D

Since this NYG/PHI game is such a dog (unless you're an Eagles fan, I guess), I'm noticing things like Jeff Feagles doing a really good job punting the football for the Giants today. He's getting good distance on the kicks, and they're all going out of bounds. The Eagles aren't getting a chance to return anything.

It's probably the only bright spot for the Giants today, so I figure I'll give out some kudos to the former Eagle.

I didn't see the "kicking the opponent" penalty (even when they showed the replay, it was off the edge of my screen). I'm going to assume that it was pretty obvious from the way Joe Buck said it, though. If it was that obvious, what a stupid penalty. Why are you kicking anybody for any reason, especially 15 yards behind the play?

Anyway, I'm hoping for some premature celebrations from Jeremy Shockey just like in the Giants' game against Seattle last year. That was hilarious.

I didn't see the play, Dervack, but it was 3-3. No safety in the game. Now, it's 10-3 thanks to a Bulger to Holt TD. I just started watching this game, along with the Arizona game (although that one is quickly starting to look like a dog.)

Chiefs defense playing well, Denver offense playing poor, Chiefs offense playing to shorten the game. That's the story.

And Jake throws the INT.

Wow. SF's O-Line with some good protection, and Alex Smith with a nice little slide away from a defender to buy more time and he connects on a 72 yard TD pass to Antonio Bryant. SF up 17-10 over the Rams.

Heh, heh ... Damon Huard completes a pass to himself and fumbles for a turnover. On the next play, Jake throws a pass into the ground five yards short of a receiver, then gets his ass drilled on the next play.

Bizarre QB play in Denver ... the calls for Cutler are going to loud real quick if Denver doesn't score on this drive.

This has been an amazingly exciting game to watch -- our offense looks like it could be a real threat with a little polish to the O-Line and Vernon Davis' hands.

Antonio Bryant's tantrum on the sidelines when Smith overthrew him in the first half isn't very good though. It was great to see Trent Dilfer talking to him instantly though.

Hopefully he realizes soon that he's on the same team as a REALLY young QB and that will happen. Soon after, they connected for a 72 yard TD, so hopefully that's water under the bridge now.

As badly as it appears the Broncos are playing, I'd much rather be watching that than this Patriots-Jets snoozefest. The Patriots are making the Jets look incompetent. Big surprise. Seriously, does anybody outside of a 30-mile radius of the Meadowlands care about the Jets? I mean, they're not even relevant enough to dislike. They're just "there." If this happened to be a close game, OK, leave it on, but it's 24-6 with an extra point coming up. This is really unwatchable. At least give us the 6-3 game in Denver.

Ah, well.

So some things never change, eh?

It was good to see Smith put him in his place during the week though:

Ann Killion, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports San Francisco 49ers QB Alex D. Smith does not want to hear any of his wide receivers complain. When asked what his reaction would be if WR Antonio Bryant started to lobby for the ball, Smith responded: "I don't want to hear from a receiver that he's open all the time. I have enough on my plate." Head coach Mike Nolan agreed with Smith and added, "Good for him. He needs to be able to say that. And the receiver needs to respect that he said it."

I think that was a very mature response by Smith, and it's definitely what I want to hear my QB say (especially such a young one).

Yep. Pretty impressive. Pennington just had another touchdown pass to Laveranues Coles, and Coles showed some very fancy footwork to get into the end zone on the play. The Jets had to go and make this a competitive game. So much for me getting switched over to the Chiefs and Broncos. :)

Jake Plummer ... the other Trent Dilfer.

An irony of the Broncos win is that one of the big plays Plummer made on the game-winning drive in overtime was when he woefully underthrew Javon Walker, but Walker made a great adjustment and Ty Law couldn't come back -- If Plummer throws that pass on the money or too deep, Law makes a play and had better position than Walker so he might have picked it. Once, again, Jake pulls a Homer.

Not arguing with you about Jake, he sucks. . . but that was a designed underthrow. They called the same play last week and Javon dropped what would have been a TD when two Rams hit each other. That was actually one of Jake's best passes of the day.

I predicted they'd win by a TD or more. The Rams are not that good of a football team and the Niner offense is better than people think. The Hawks are still the class of the division though. When they get Branch involved, they are going to be tough to stop.

Troy, you're a bigger Bronco donkey than I am a Chiefs homer. There is NO WAY that pass was a designed underthrow. First, if you watch Walker you could see how drammatically he had to adjust to the ball -- that wasn't a designed stop, it was a "Oh, shit, he underthrew the ball" stop.

Second, Jake didn't throw a pass on target all day long -- you telling me after the day he had he was able to put the most important pass of the day on target in the clutch?

I started to offer a warning to Jake apologists who would try to defend it as a designed underthrow in my original post. Guess I should have included it. :)

I'm telling you, they ran that play repeatedly in the preseason. It was a staple in training camp and they ran the same play three times in the Rams game.

Same play, same timing. Fade to the outside with Walker running full bore, underthrow, catch.

Plummer has a strong arm, you can be sure he didn't underthrow the ball by thirty yards there. (which is what it would have had to have been if Walker stays at full speed) That was a designed play you'll see the Broncos run all year.

And I'm not a Jake apologist. I'd love for the scumbag to tear his hammy and miss about 8 weeks so we can get the Cutler era underway. But you'd see Cutler throw the same pass. Sorry. The dumb ass QB actually came through when it mattered. I'm as surprised as you are.

The Ware call was potentially the worst one for sure.

One thing you'll find about me in my extreme homerism for my various teams, I'm usually pretty objective about penalties. My biggest complaints with refs will be when they are inconsistent between team to team. But when they're like this game, ticky tacky calls, but consistent, I get over it.

Just to finish off the kcChief/Troy debate about the Plummer pass:

Shanahan praised Plummer's throw, but even Plummer admitted he didn't do anything special.

"There wasn't any timing on it, there was no leading him, nothing pretty about it. I was just throwing it up there and making sure I gave him a chance to come down with the ball, and he did," Plummer said. "And that's why we got him here."

Designed play. No leading him, just throw it up and make it a jump ball.

I've now defended Jake Plummer in two posts over the last couple of days. I think I'll go jump off of a bridge now.
