They typically only do about 30-50% of their games in HD (Fox is more like 75-90%).

From the one look I had at it, I didn't think that last one was a facemask...looked to me like Hurd got the front collar.
Still, the Cowboys are playing some UGLY ball right now.

There honestly isn't a game in there that compels me to go "oh wow I wanna sit down and watch this!" With the possible exception of highlight-reel Vick who is on right now.

Saints are getting some favorable breaks today, need to take advantage. Although Duece being out for now hurts, so I guess that about evens things out.
Getting some good pressure on Mcnabb has been the key to holding the Eagles scoreless so far, need to keep it up.

Is Brown really that fast, or the Saints' secondary that slow?

A little of both. CB was our biggest off season need, and the best (granted, a rookie) safety went down last week.
For the last decade, there used to be two or three big plays like that every quarter. In THAT context, that play was an aberration.

Grats to the Buccs, they should've lost this game by a lot based on the play by plays, penalties and an offensive line thats not playing up to its ability seem to be killing us. I'm not even going to start in on what I think of the defense.
Gah. What a pathetic way to come out of the bye week.

Man, I sure hope that isn't a sign for things to come tonight.
Interesting games. The Rams continue to be the "lucky" team this year. Seems to be one team every year that gets nearly every break. Opposing teams fumble the ball, hit the upright, get the key penalty. Only an incredible kick by Brown prevented them from carrying that to a 5-1 record.
The Saints look pretty darned good. I've never seen Deuce run this well. Huge loss for the Redskins. The Ravens defense was carved up like a turkey and the Texans continue to look horrible.
Chargers and Niners already tied up with TD's in the afternoon games. Steelers seem to be looking good in a game they must have.

quote]
He is an idiot. Both of our coordinators are. One because he refuses to blitz, except on 3rd and 3 when they have called a damn quick slant every 3rd and medium in the game and then they tear it off for 15 yards.
Our offensive coordinator is because he stops using Rudi (even if it's not there you keep pounding) until he tries to run out the clock with 4:30 left, then calls his patented and yet creative shovel pass play on 3rd and 12.
I've been saying it for two years. Both those guys need to go. They don't understand what kind of talent they have. With the secondary we have, especially when Dexter Jackson comes back, we should be rushing 5 or 6 EVERY play.

Well, he did have a punt return the won them a football game. He hasn't been great for most of the year and his numbers weren't great today, but I'd argue he had a pretty decent impact on the game.

Thoughts after the first half:
1) I really like Champ Bailey.
2) The tennis ball thing Walker uses to practice with is pretty damned cool. He's been the best third down WR in the league this year. Getting him for a 2nd round pick is a steal.
3) Cecil Sapp has to make that catch.
4) Art Shell and Al Davis look like statues.
5) That personal foul by the CB was one of the dumber penalties you'll ever see. Two feet from the ref, he throws a two hand slap to the head of Marshall. Man, I know they are stupid, but good lord.

The fact New Orleans has been improved immensely with him and Brees should say enough. His being on the field is simply enough. He leads the league in receptions. He's never going to be 1000 yard back. (at least I don't think so) I do think he'll get 800 and 800 though.

Not to mention that he doesn't need to put up the stats some are looking for to have a big effect on his team. 38 receptions for a RB is a tremendous number at this point of the season...if those are coming on dump-offs when Brees can't find a receiver, and Bush is grinding out first downs as a result, that is having a big impact.
Don't blame Bush because other people are claiming he'll re-define the NFL.

What? Other RB's have returned punts to win a game? Other RB's are leading the league in receptions? Other RB's, by their mere presence on the wide side of the field can draw double coverage that was and leave a TE or slot WR on the inside of him open, as the Saints did multiple times today?
No, he isn't running the ball well yet. He needs to be more decisive and cut up the field more quickly. He also hasn't had as many big plays as I figured he would have by now. Should that continue for another 5 or 6 weeks, I'll be a bit more concerned.
But saying he's just another RB? Please. . .

10-16-2006, 12:01 AM
Eh... Bush will always have haters I guess. Nobody seems to be bringing up the fact that Mario Williams has been practically invisible and the Texans still suck.
Like the previous 2 posters have said, a game winning punt return for a TD and leading the league in receptions is a pretty good return for a rookie 5 games into his career. His first couple of games he was getting tackled for big losses too often, but since then I think he's looked fine running the ball. Considering he's basically a backup running back (not sure anybody expected Deuce to look this damn good), occasional slot reciever and a punt returner, I don't know what people are expecting to see.
Troy - keep the faith. Once he's adjusted and seeing the holes better he'll have his share of big plays, and the return against TB could well be the turning point of your season. The Bucs aren't as bad as everyone has been saying, but if you don't pull that game out it really hurts team morale.

C'mon, Steve, if Joey Porter did that and it ended up costing the Steelers a game, you'd be crying all week about it. That was maybe the worst roughing the passer call I've ever seen... QB's just need to learn to fall helmet first onto the ground so they could get the call.
Bengals offense still looks like ass though. Not sure wtf they're doing this year.

re: Reggie Bush
I think the fact that McAllister is the starting RB is going to lead to less impressive running stats for Bush. After all, Bush is basically the 3rd down back now because McAllister is (and has been) a very, very good RB. Bush doesn't necessarily get all that many touches in the run game and isn't really able to get in any kind of rhythm running the ball.

Dude, I'd be crying about that one for the next half decade. I'm still pissed off about that random running into the kicker penalty vs the Titans in the 2002 playoffs. And the Bettis coinflip tails call that wasn't back in thanksgiving of '98 or thereabouts.

That coinflip is one of the most mindboggling events I've witnessed in professional sports.

The coinflip was a completely ridiculous call, but as a Steeler hater, it was extraordinarily hilarious.

That coinflip cost Charles Johnson his chance at Super Bowl glory. That was the first of five straight Pittsburgh losses to end the 1998 season, and CJ was gone the next year.

Hey, anytime Thanksgiving falls on my birthday, it's not a bad day. Turkey and gravy for dinner, mmmmmm.

Hmm. Isn't Pumpy living in the Philly area? I wonder what team he's rooting for? Can't be the Broncos, huh?
I missed this the first time around. Nah, I'm in Steelers country. Nobody cared about me being a Broncos fan in New Orleans, but now than I'm in an AFC city, I get shit every week. :(

I've only seen two Saints games this season, but from what I've seen Reggie Bush is a terrible RB right now. He seems to have solid value as a receiver out of the backfield, in the slot and as a decoy. He is also a very good punt returner. At this point I guess he's a poor man's Brian Westbrook who can return punts well. On the whole though I can't imagine this is what people had in mind when they were calling him a once a generation prospect.
The team either needs to come up with new, creative ways to get him the ball in open space (where he is incredibly dangerous) or he needs to figure out how to run effectively between the tackles.

Reggie Bush still has a lot to learn, no doubt. What's amazing is that he's having an effect on defenses, even though he's only getting 3 yards per carry. Look at other backs who have similar YPC numbers: Reuben Droughns (3.3), Maurice Morris (3.1), Ron Dayne (2.9), Kevan Barlow (2.8), and Edgerrin James (2.7). None of these guys are going to alter a defense just by their mere presence on the field.
Well, if Barlow's on the field, the defense might catch a quick nap, but I digress.
I see your point about Bush not looking like a great running back right now, and I agree that he isn't. I was under the impression that he wasn't drafted to be a running back, though. People throw around the term "playmaker" as his position, and by the end of the season, I think that's exactly what he'll be. I don't think he'll ever be a top RB in the NFL like Shaun Alexander or Tiki Barber. He's opening up opportunities for his teammates, though, and that has just about as much value. If Reggie Bush does get his rushing numbers up, he'll be the type of all-purpose player that the league hasn't seen in years.
