Okay, I'm going to do a study of the best PC Games of All Time according to FOFC members. To accomplish this I need you to provide a list of your top five PC games of all time. No ties allowed. I will take the top five on each persons list and use that to begin the process of determining the BEST ever. You do not need to list the games in any particular order at this point. Just your top five. Tark's top five:
Diablo
StarCraft/Brood War
Baldur's Gate
Operation Flashpoint
Medieval: Total War

Quake I. The only one I played because it was simple and I had better reflexes back then. These new ones are just too complicated.
Championship Manager 3. It got me hooked on CM.
Alpha Centauri. Play that still.
APBA for Windows. Just something about that game with Ernie Harwell. It was like listening to a game on the radio, best audio sports commentary of all time.
Zork I. The first game I ever played on the computer.

Front Page Sports Football 94
DOOM II
Warcraft 2
Hardball 3
OOTP 4
- These may not be the best of all time, but the most memorable to me. As you can tell, most of these games are from the same time period (93-97) when I was 13-17. You know, the time in your life when you can sit back and game for hours, sometimes days on end. The magic of "online" (ie modem) play are the reason why warcraft and doom are on the list.

If you asked me the same question next week, I might pick the 5 games I played most, or the 5 games I thought looked and played the best, regardless of hours spent on them....
Asking for top 5 games from a lifetime gamer is a cruel thing to do. :)

I'm not sure how productive it is to try to identify the specific links in a series when there weren't overwhelming difference among them (in particular the FPS Football series). I'd hate to see such a worthy entry lose out because one person voted for the 95 version, another for the 94 version, etc. I personally got hooked on the original version, and (fairly obviously) enjoyed each upgrade... but which year's version was the "best" is hard to say.
So, with that caveat:
Front Page Sports Football ('97 may have been the best release)
Wizardry! (the original, if you must)
Front Office Football (FOF 2001 gave me the most play)
Championship Manager (00/01 so far)
Bard's Tale

Yeah! But while we're talking about games I'd like to see some more diversity among the picks. As much as people like Elder Scrolls-- nobody picked Redguard. Redguard just happens to be the only major PC game with a black lead character and cast.
Have you people even given it fair consideration?

1. Earl Weaver Baseball - the best sports game of all time. I will not argue about this.
2. Dungeon Master - the father of first-person, real-time RPGs. Truly changed an entire genre.
3. Hockey League Simulator - ahead of its time.
4. Sim City - one of two games that created a new genre, the "god sim", that's arguably still the most popular in the world. The other game being...
5. Populous - didn't spawn the sort of franchise that Sim City did, but still very important for it's time.

2. Sim City (1990). The original. Nothing more, nothing less; just the best.
3. FOF: The Fourth Edition (2002). The tightest sport sim out there.
4. OOTP4 (2002). Only reason it makes the list - its multiplayer and reporting abilities.
5. NHL'99 (1998). For when you need to beat the shit out of the computer. So many unstopable ways to score makes the game fun to see how many goals you can score.

Wow- narrowing this down to 5 is hard. At least for console, I can narrow it down to 2 amazing games and then about a list of 20 hugely influential ones.
5. Civilization II - While not the first in the series, it really spawned a genre all it's own and was hugely addictive.
4. Starcraft - This was the toughest one in the sense that it was a coin flipper between SC and WC2. The latter essentially created the genre but the former pefected it so I have to give the nod to Starcraft.
3. Quake - Created. Online. Gaming. Period.
Ok, not in the sense that it was the first but it made online gaming explode and is the reason why online gaming is what it is today. Also, was the first game to really deck itself out with all kinds of dev tools so mods of all type could be made.
2. Sim City 2000 - Almost as tough as SC vs WC2, the decider was the wow factor. The amazing realism, the unparalleled control, the sheer feel that you were god over an amazingly detailed city were just some of the things this game had to offer. However, the interface and play were light years ahead of SimCity and that's why it gets the nod.
1. Wolfenstein 3D - I remember getting a headache from playing this the first time but once you got used to the game, it felt real. There were lots of video games, but you didn't feel like you were *in* the game. In this one, you were in the game shooting Nazi's and their weird creations. And things only got better as Doom, Doom II, and Quake all set the standards for gaming in leaps and bounds. This game defined computer gaming forever.

Even though it has been more than 10 years, I still get shivers when thinking about running down that maze with the creepy purple wall and turning the corner into a room full of gestapos. That, and having one of those big bad bosses chasing you to where you were very, very afraid to turn around.

Imperialism II
Heroes of Might & Magic III
Combat Mission
F-19
TCY
That was harder than I thought. The first two are classic examples of ultimate "just one more turn" games. So many nights/mornings playing those games I looked up at the clock and was shocked. Combat Mission is simply an awesome game, and revolutionary for the wargame genre. I had to put F-19 in there simply because it was one of the most fun gaming experiences I can recall. A palm-sweating, joystick-yanking blast almost every mission. Finally, TCY is totally immersive to me. I spend hours and hours with the recruiting process. Sure, it's by no means a perfect game, but for my tastes, it is addictive.

In no particular order:
FOF2001 was the most played of the series for me.
Heroes 3 (and the many expansion packs)
The Bard's Tale Trilogy
King's Quest I, II, III - lost interest after III or IV
Space Quest Series - at least the first couple.
I still have not found games I play as much as I played those old Sierra games, or the Bard's Tale. Whether that is because I had more time to play games back then, or they were just better games, I am not sure.

King's Quest I, II, III - lost interest after III or IV
That's interesting, KQV was my first exposure to graphics adventure gaming and it truly was a phenomenal experience. I remember then buying I-IV in a set but since I played with the great graphics of V (revolutionary for its time), I couldn't go backwards. By the way, I thought VI was very good, VII really sucked but VIII was superb, albeit a different genre (RPG/Adventure).

"I have been playing Undying lately. It is the first game since Wolf3D to evoke emotions- mostly fear!- that strong."
Wolf3D was the first game I ever played that made me jump out of my chair on a regular basis. Sometimes when playing other games, I'll jump a little, but nothing since has made me jump like Wolf3D did.
Maybe I should check out Undying. :)

The first three way out in front, the fourth I played for months untill I figured out the first three, and the fifth is by far the best American sports game ever made. NCAA 2003 for the Xbox tops it, though.

Any more input here? I'll keep it going until it goes off the front page again and then move on to step 2. Thanks again for the inputs. :)

What year were those games produced? Until EHM came along, there wasn't a better hockey sim around. I think HLS and WGH came out in the late 80s. I'm pretty sure HLS came with the 87/88 rosters, give or take a year.
It's stange how Hockey League Simulator and Earl Weaver Baseball both allowed easy player editing, when so many of today's sports sims still don't.

Tony La Russa Baseball - First computer game I ever played. Never played Earl Weaver, can't compare the two.
Madden 2002
For my 5th, I would put Medal of Honor over Madden, but I played it on PlayStation, not the computer.

In no particular order:
Diablo II- playing multiplayer ip to ip, like 6 people all using battle.com or gamevoice-- tons of fun
FOF 2- the game that got me into text sims in general
NCAA Football '99- played forever in college, easy, yet still quite fun
High Heat Baseball 1- yes, the sequels were more advanced, but for a game that I heard nothing about prior to seeing it for like $20, it totally blew me away
Worms 2- holy hand grenade & concrete donkey. enough said

Sterlingice: I seriously considered putting Wolfenstein 3D up on my top 5 list but purposely left off FPS games for some reason. Even though it has been more than 10 years, I still get shivers when thinking about running down that maze with the creepy purple wall and turning the corner into a room full of gestapos. That, and having one of those big bad bosses chasing you to where you were very, very afraid to turn around.
Damn fine game and so great. It's one of those games that does show its age, tho. In twenty years, some snot nosed punk is going to tell me how crappy it is and I'm going to have to punch SI Jr (just kidding, obviously). But on the serious side of things, it's just like what happened with RPG sentiment. It went from games like DW1-4, FF2, FF3, and CT that "old schoolers" love to flashy, story-deprived neo-playstation RPGs and if you show one of those psx fans, for instance, the masterpiece that is Chrono Trigger, they'll turn their nose up at it and not understand what was so mind-blowingly cool about it.
