I wonder how long the wait is in Sweden?
Country: Sverige
Season: 18
Number of teams: 27304
Number of regions: 27 regions
Top series: Allsvenskan
Online users: 1735
Active users: 26290
Waiting list: 8175
I also wonder if they may be holding off on all new registrations because of the recent IP move and subsequant web server problems.
More money floating around.

We may be a season or two from adding another US division. This link was posted on the Global Hattrick conference yesterday. I found it quite interesting.
http://www.dandy.at/managers.html
There are teams that are far more in need of a new division than us (Belgium, Denmark, Argentina, Romania, Norway). When you take into account that for each of these new divisions, over 8000 teams & initial players must be created, the additional load on their hardware would be significant.
This is purely speculation, keep in mind I never have any idea what I'm talking about.

This one guy posted something about it, I emailed him and he said he needed developers. So basically, it sounded to me like a guy with a bunch of great ideas, just no way to make them work.

I could not get him any playing time with 2 passable keepers already on the team. If you are looking for a decent backup keeper with solid leadership and decent set piece taking (he did score a goal for me in a friendly), I put him on the list for 10k.

Congrats on getting your team. However, the first place team is definately not mine. My Little Green Monsters are in 7th place in my league and are not a threat to anyone at the moment. We have been outscored 42-0 in our last 10 games (dating back to the last regime).
Now I must go to hatttrick, find out who the imposter is and take him out.

Thankfully, Hattrick isn'tall that time consuming since it is a day to day thing. It doesn't take long to scour the market and your team changes only 1x a week, so you dion't have to constantly check on it. Of course whjen you have 80,000 dollars left and don't want to spend more, you spend less time.

The visiting team pays $6K for travel expenses. The crowd is usually bigger, and you get twice as much experience as a local friendly. All in all it's a great deal for the home side.

Did I get a deal? I bought the following player for 17K:
Kristinn Daníelsson (7362272)
19 years, inadequate form, healthy
Stamina: excellent_
Goaltending: disastrous_
Playmaking: weak_
Passing: passable_
Winger: wretched_
Defending: weak_
Scoring: inadequate_
Set Pieces: inadequate_
3 goals
I think I can bring up the inadequates. I bought him b/c I sold my top striker, he was 29 anyway. I also bought an 18 year old with inad. in scoring and D, which I'm training now, for 1000.
Did I do a good job?
And check Sweden for transfers, it seems young guys can fall through the cracks.
He could be fairly decent. I had a 18 year old weak scorer just pop to passable in scoring this past week and he's now 20. I'll probably try to sell him for face value now. I could see you getting him to solid in two seasons or so. Good luck!
He popped to passable from weak?;)
He also popped from 18 to 20 :)

So count me among the hooked :)
Couple of questions:
1) How important is it to watch your money? I'm definitely going to kick up my youth squad spending, but should I worry about getting into debt early? If I kick up my youth squad, it looks like I'll be losing about 15k a week...I have 300k right now. Thoughts?
2) I have a passable coach already (woo-hoo), and he is defensive minded. Not to start a war between ardent and HFP, but how much should the fact that he is defensive minded influence my decision to have an offensive or defensive strategy? Should I even care? Also, should I worry too much about his weak leadership rating?
3) My best keeper is rated weak (and everyone else is wretched or disastrous), so I'm definitely in the market for a keeper. Since my team is 5th, and probably only going down in the very near future, should I just go for an inadequate keeper?
4) Finally, how quickly should I expect development to occur? I've got three or four guys who seem pretty good (estimated value in six figures), but two of them are 25 and 26. Are they going to get any better, or should I try to get money for them now?
I'll look into this more tomorrow when I have time, but you guys know much more about this than I, and I know nothing about soccer (maybe this will finally get me into CM :))
Oh yeah, my team info:
Isla Vista Vandals (70384)

You shouldn't have to pay that much for a passable keeper - probably only about $110,000 for a decent guy. Keep looking.
For your defenders, you probably want to move one of them up to play inner midfield, and essentially get into a 3-5-2 setup. With limited resources, it makes sense to go for either guys with "solid" defending and little else (costing $100k or more), or else guys with "passable" defense and perhaps some complementary decent skills like winger, playmaking or passing. You can pick up guys with two or three ratings of inad or passable fairly affordably/

I see two different paths for the money situation- if you have a pretty good team right now, then go straight for the stadium expansion as soon as next season starts. If you have a weaker team, you'll need to spend that cash on players. It all depends on the hand you were dealt to start. If you need players, the stadium expansion will have to wait until you make your sponsors more happy and get more cash.
I think the key with your coach is "should i even care". You have a passable coach without spending any money. You probably shouldn't care.
The third question relates to number 1. If you have a good team, go put down that $80 to $100K on a passable goalie. It takes time to find one around $80K but can be done and saves you money for other players. Since you aren't going anywhere this year, you don't want to overpay something like $110K-$120K for someone you can get for cheaper and spend on a young trainable player. BTW, if 4th is attainable, you can get a little bit of prize cash at the end of the year.
Lastly, depends on how badly you need them and if you think you can blow out your team and start over without overpaying for stuff. I suspect the answer is no. You learn from mistakes or very careful observation and you don't have the wealth  of experience from the first that some of us do: I almost paid $55K for an inad keeper my first day until the guy, whose keeper I was bidding on, messaged this guy I was in a bidding war with and myself and told us to stop. Thankfully the other guy "won".
The number of weeks for guys to grow from one level to the next can generally be done by this formula (goalies take a week or two less, defenders take a week or two more) =
(Age - 10) + (Coach's skill below solid, so passable for you = 1). Your 26yo will take a while, as you can see. Also, this is with a full compliment of coaches (ie 6-8 assistants). Adjust your team accordingly.

And in 9 league matches now, I haven't allowed a goal. If you include friendlies, quiksand has scored the most goals against me with 2. Unfortunately, I haven't scored more than 4 goals in a match yet, and I have 3, ugly 1-0 wins, and a hideous 0-0 tie.

Actually we are tied for 3rd with 23 points, but the other team is better if you look at the 'star' count.
Question: How much good does Match of Year do (We play that 3rd place tie team last week of the season)?

Oh, Hattrick pet peeve. Your coach going defensive. Nothing like snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. My git (note, english term there) has used the ploy 5 times. He felt we were so far ahead, and safe, that we should pull everybody back, and 'D' up.
In these occasions we've managed to win a mere 2 of the 5 games. 2 losses, and 1 tie. The moron did it again in my league game this week, causing the tie. We're condemed to relegation now, though with a win, we would have had a great chance at a qualification match. I think I know who Mike Brown is looking for after Marvin Lewis runs out of town screaming bloody murder...

Expansions next season
During the winter the HT-Team have been focusing on fixing problems and performance issues. We've been digging into the database, into the code and tuning the system in small adjustments. Each change have not been having a huge impact but the sum of 2 months of such work means that we are not only fully able to deal with the current load, but also capable of accomodating more users.
So, we feel happy to announce the expansion of a bunch of leagues. Which ones? More about that in a moment.
-"Hey, wait a minute - the site is still slow on Sundays and let's not talk about the conference, it gives me time-outs all the time!".
Yes, you are right. However, these are two separate things and won't really be affected by an expansion. The problem with the slow site has been vastly reduced the last 2 weeks since we made a couple of code improvents. It can still be a bit slow when Sweden plays matches on Sundays and Wednesdays. Around early next season we will have more web server capacity installed. That should eliminate even that problem.
However, we will NOT be expanding Sweden this season. Even though we will soon be having the capacity to deal wih an expansion of Sweden, we do not expand until we really have that capacity installed. It is a lesson we've learnt.
The second problem, the apalling state of the conference is not really a performance problem. Considering the type of problems with the conference database we have, just adding more hardware or limiting the number of users does not help. What we need to do is to make some fundamental design changes to the conference system. We've spent quite some time analyzing and tracking down what the problem is and what needs to be done. We will now begin to make those changes. It will take time - months. But since this is not really a performance issue, it would not make sense to let the expansion of the leagues wait on that work to be completed.
Another factor in determining whether a particlar league can be expanded is GM resources. The number of Game-masters have been growing to now almost 50 GMs! All the major leagues have their own GM and some have more than one. Having enough GMs is crucial before expanding a league and the expansion plans below have been discussed and cleared with the GMs.
So, after some explanation of our reasoning as to what CAN be expanded, a few words about what NEEDS to be expanded:
Some leagues are obvious: Romania and Argentina were close to getting an expansion already last season. They now get it.
België also has a huge waiting list and will of course be expanded.
Then there is the rising star in the Hattrick sky: Nederland. The league has been growing at stunning speed for many months now and we see no sign of it slowing down. Normally we'd be reluctant to expand a league at this level two seasons in a row, but it is clear that Nederland really needs it. So, there will be an expansion of Nederland from 11,000 to 19,000 teams.
Denmark, Norge, USA and Schweiz are also getting an expansion from 2700 to 11,000 teams.
These are the major expansions (each involving 8192 new teams). Apart from those, a bunch of leagues will be expanding from a lower level:
From 680 to 2727 teams
Hrvatska
France
Mexico
Magyarország
From 168 to 680 teams
Slovenija
Chile
Israel
Bulgaria
Rossiya
Türkiye
Wales
The expansion of all these leagues will have to mean some adjustments to match and update times. Details in a separate document about new match times.
This is taken from the hattrick website. Does that mean that there will be a D6?

I used to be that way, but I modified it a bit. I won't get anyone over 20 in a position I'm training, or position affected by training. But, if theres a position that won't be affected.. I don't worry so much about the age as long as their not a year or two away from decline. The training time plays no part on them and you can get some great deals on mutli-passable skillset players in the 24-27 range.
Someone had mentioned it on the board, and it just made too much sense for me not to try.

Ok, I'm trying to figure out how terrible my team is in relation to other Division V FOFC Hattrickers...
I just got my team about a week and a half ago, and have played three games. In game 1, I didn't realize I had my team yet, so I hadn't set the lineup (we lost 8-0 to the 3rd place team). In our friendly, we lost 5-1, and my output was quite bad...and finally, in our recent league game we lost 5-1 as well to the #2 team in the series, but my keeper went down early in the second half, as did my starting left wing back, and 3 of the goals were allowed on the backups. Here are my ratings and star output for the two games I actually had an influence on...how do you guys normally fare?
Game 1: Loss 5-1 to Team Groomers (#8 in Division V.150)
13 Total stars (Best was both wingers @ 2, worst was a few at .5)
Midfield: Wretched
Right Side Defense: Weak
Central Defense: Weak
Left Side Defense: Poor
Right Side Attack: Poor
Central Attack: Wretched
Left Side Attack: Poor
Game 2: Loss 5-1 to Epoxy United
19 Total Stars (Best was C. Defender @ 2.5, worst was Left Wing Back replacement with .5, even though he scored my only goal)
Midfield: Wretched
Right Side Defense: Weak
Central Defense: Weak (not so sure about this...my central defender has solid defense, and got the best rating of all my players for the match)
Left Side Defense: Poor
Right Side Attack: Inadequate
Central Attack: Inadequate
Left Side Attack: Passable
Now, game two was the first one when I had my now standard lineup in, and what I feel is a more true measure of my squad's capabilities. Just for comparison, what kind of games do you guys usually put up? How many stars, and what kind of ratings do you shoot for? Inadequate, Passable, Solid?

Just an opinion here, but I'd imagine it depends on what you're looking for. If you're trying to create a particular team strength by solidifying a particular aspect of your team before moving on to another area (see: DK's defense and ardent's scoring), then a longer period at a particular area might be what you're looking for.

I think 25 stars will get you a promotion quite easily. My 23 would get me 2nd place in our division if I had controlled the team the entire year. As for rating, weak/inad midfield is what you really need to shoot for. Aside from that, try to get a couple of solids or highers and make sure everything else is inad or higher. That should get your a promotion in a typical division V. Of course there are some that are much harder and much easier.

Thanks SI...I was fairly certain that I needed at least a few more stars to really compete. It seems that my division is fairly average, as I can almost hang with the #2 squad now, and I'm quite unhappy with my performance. By the end of next season I'm fairly certain that I'll have one of the stronger teams in the division (listen to me talk...winning that IM basketball game tonight has made me cocky as hell :))

Just a word of caution to all those who care to listen...
Don't pay too much attention to star ratings for your entire team. For rating one player against another, stars are an excellent (or perhaps even formidable? ;) )way to judge performances. But for rating your team against others, it can be misleading.
For example, the team that I defeated this weekend in my league match actually had my team beat by 2 stars, 31-29, yet I defeated them 3-1. In any given week, I think I have never had the highest "star" turnout in my series, yet I am in first place. I know there are a number of other examples of this, where the team with the best "star power" is not going to win their series.
I have devised another (albeit rough) system for judging team strength, that seems to me to be a better way to measure team strength. Simply add up the numerical equivalent of your team ratings from your last match, with midfield counting double.
For example, my last match:
-Midfield: Inadequate (5)
-Right Defense: Brilliant (11)
-Central Defense: Brilliant (11)
-Left Defense: Brilliant (11)
-Right Attack: Passable (6)
-Central Attack: Passable (6)
-Left Attack: Inadequate (5)
10 (midfield*2) + 11 + 11 + 11 + 6 + 6 + 5 = 60
My opponent, despite having me beat by 2 stars, totalled only 53. I won the match, 3-1.
I've been toying with this formula for a little while now, and while it is far from perfect, it seems to be a better measure of team strength than total stars. There is a saying on the Hattrick Conferences that "Stars are EVIL," and I wouldn't want to see you guys fall into the trap of putting too much emphasis on them.
Happy Hattricking!

I would start at inadequate. If anything you can start pulling keepers and get a couple of inadequates if you are lucky and sell for 10-20k. It also helps in making it a routine so you dont forget later when your youth squad rating is better.

Corollary question to this... is there signifigant risk to buying players now at the end of the season? I just bought my passable keeper, and my next step is to try to cheaply fill out my midfield and defensive lines with some inadequate players, do i need to wait until the start of the next season to do this?

What I understand is that all of your players will be aging one full year at the end of the season, kind of overnight. This means if you are buying youngsters to train them, I wouldn't buy much older than 19 (considering this will be 20 yo in a few weeks)...

I would think you'd want to keep Matt on your club. Not only is he a decent team leader, but he can also probably start for you at forward or (more likely) defender.
Personally, I really like one of my defenders to be a head specialist. Not only will they score the occasional header-goal off of a corner kick, but they will also make it more difficult for opposing teams to score on headers against you.

Next, after a run of 12 consecutive wins I am poised for automatic promtion. The only problem, I am still in second place and the other team is has a killer offense. We play in my house for the title and the automatic promotion.
1. New England Black S 13 76 - 11 36

3. *Charlotte Hornets* 13 36 - 30 21

Set Pieces. Player experience, form, and scoring I believe all play a small role as well, but set pieces is the dominant statistic for penalty shots.

Make sure the teams you challenge are active (regularly play friendly matches) so you aren't wasting any of those 25.
I'm pretty sure they started that rule because of you :)

Well after careful negotiations of which I had no idea what the poor fellow was saying, I can cross Chile off the list.
18 countries down, 38 to go!
I will be the first hattricker to play every country in the game. I am not sure what that means though.

If I remember correctly, you can change the name of your team during the off-season. However, I believe you will lose a small percentage of your supporters if you do so (10%??) and there is a small cost associated with it as well ($6,000??).
I've never done it, so I am not certain about the numbers.

If I remember right, you can but only during the offseason. And there a fee for that... I also remember reading that you could lose some supporters as some of you hardcore fans might be unsettled by a team name change. Check in the rules, it's in there somwhere...

Ok well I have to ask. What's the deal with international friendlies? It appears as though if I travel out of the US, I receive a portion of the funds from the match even though I'm the visiting team? Am I reading that correctly? If that's true, then that's the "positive" of intl. friendlies, while the negative is that they're only worth 1/5 of a regular match as far as experience goes. Is that correct?
DataKing
03-13-2003, 03:52 PM
You receive 1/2 of the gate receipts in a friendly match, whether it is domestic or international. International friendlies do tend to draw larger crowds, though.
The real down-side is that the visiting team has to pay $6,000 in travel expenses.
Domestic friendlies are worth 1/10th the experience of a league match. International friendlies, on the other hand, are worth 1/5th, which means they give your players twice as much experience as domestic friendlies.
I hope this helps clear things up.

regular friendlies also give the visiting team money from spectators. You only get 1/10 of the experience in regular friendlies compared to the 1/5 for international ones. International friendlies cost money for flight and booking costs(7,000?)

I just read that team name changed thing yesterday -- its not in the hattrick rules, it was on one of those hattrick helper sites. I seem to recall you lose 3% of your supporters, but I can't remember the cost.

You spent a lot of money playing internationally? So, how much do you pull in for friendlies internationally? I know you get more but does it help defer some of the cost? If so, I wouldn't mind paying $2K a week for a little extra training
As for the name change thing, here's some somewhat definitive info:
from hattricks:
"change name of club: -3%"
from the rules, page 3:
"Between seasons, you will get the option of changing your Clubs name. This will set you back $20000, and will trigger the Fanclub to shrink by a few percent, as your most conservative supporters abondon the Club in disgust... "

Well, I scheduled a home-and-home with some guy out of Denmark. Both of our teams suck, and cloudy weather didn't help...but I only got $1,000 in revenue, so I guess I should expect to lose at least $5,000 next week :(
By the way...what has more of an effect on your crowd showing up? His team is better than mine, yet he's #8 in his DV, and I'm #5 in my DV. I know the countries have different levels of talent in their divisions, but do the fans follow the standings, or the recent play of the team?

HornedFrog isn't saying is will be the first team to play in every country, just to play one team from every country. If I understood his strategy the right way, he challenges a lot of outsiders to international friendlies played at his place :D
And you know what, some people will just fall for it...
I've got a friendly set up for next week, but after that, I'd be wiling to schedule some home-and-home with some of my fellow FOFCer. Remember, I'm from Canada  Even though crossnig the border is about a 2 hour drive, I'd still be charged 12,000$ on my away game (that's in blue and red and green money ;) )

I would believe that fans follow yuor hot streaks, probably reflected by their mood. When you use the arenasizer tool at Hattricks, they give you three figures based on your number of supporters and if you are winning a lot, not at all, and on average.

Well actually for about 2 1/2 seasons I never played at home, I traveled exclusively. I joke all the time about how I actually get a home game once in a while.
Last week I played a German team at home but I forgot I had already played a German team in Germany last season so I just didnt play him again.
I am just trying to get some money back. :)

What I really meant was, if I can snag an extra $3-4K a week in attendance, I wouldn't mind going internationally and only paying a net of about $2K ($6-$4) to get some spare training and some international flavor.

I understood what you meant. My reasoning was that by scheduling series home-and-home, then you get the same result, i.e. playing international games with more experience, but you pay the fee only once every two weeks. That way you can almost be breakeven overall (one week you lose some, the next you make some). Seeing how most of us are trying to save money, this could be a good idea...

Ok I have another Hattrick question- I am hoping some of you vets. can help me out with this....
One of my Central Defenders got 2 yellow cards in my friendly tonight and was ejected....he got kicked out in like the 88th minute, and when I looked at my teams stars he was not listed, and when I look for 'latest match' it shows his latest match as my friendly last week....so does this match count at all for him experience wise? and most importantly- Since he is not showing up as having played in the match will he get training this week(I am training Defense)?

Ok- we have the friendly set up, since it is an off-season friendly I have a mix of starters and backups (mostly my really young guys) to get them some more experience...
Another thing- Tonight my first player 'popped' in training, I had a D-Winger go to passable in Defending....He is one of my favorite players on my team and I was happy to see him get to passable, now both of my D-wingers are at passable...I just thought I would share that with everyone.

Hey guys, my Isla Vista Vandals are also in need of a friendly...I'll warn you we suck, and it'd probably be better to go to someone else's arena, as I only draw about 400 people for friendlies.
But I'd love to play one of y'all :)

I'll be playing a mix of young and old as well. My players are in desparate need of experience, and I have very little youth worth developing.
Now fishing for some advice. I am considering upgrading my arena. I currently have the initial one which seats 7K. Once the new season gets a bit closer, is it wise to go 100-150K in debt to expand?

When I asked about upgrading my stadium this is the answer I got:

7. I think you can hold off on upgrading your stadium for a little while. Once you get into the 600-700 supporter range, then consider improving it. A couple of notes regarding stadiums.
a. There is a $30,000 base cost for stadium expansion, even if you only add one seat, so it is more efficient to do stadium expansions in large "chunks" (at least 5,000 seats at a time, IMO).
b. Do not go beyond 20x the number of supporters you have.
c. The "magic ratio" for stadium seat types is as follows: 62.5% terrace, 25% basic, 10% under roof, 2.5% VIP. This is the most efficient as far as generating revenue.

I was just looking at the new V.40. And it seems to me that as long as I continue to improve that I should be able to go undefeated this year. The new team that was relegated is new and got smoked 6-1 in their relegation match. There are two other new teams, and the old ones in the division I beat all last year.
Heres to a successful promotion campaign. (clink)

And a cheer back from Canada. I inherited an 8th place team in div IV only 4 weeks before the end of the season and I just got relegated to div V.211 in Canada and that division is an "all-bot" division. Will suck not to have anybody to talk to, but I'm absolutely pushing to get back in div IV in 16 weeks :)
