I would just like to know who is the monkey who started this virus known as Hattrick. This one well made game. Personally Hattrick has me sucked in I am thinking about becoming a supporter sometime in the future. I am a huge fan of european soccer fan and now I get to test my soccer knowledge on this well made game. Everyone should go play this game its pretty damn good.

I haven't heard a whisper about charging for Hattrick, either. As mentioned above, HAM has become shareware, and that has caused a rather large stir in the community.
I'd like maybe one more game a week, or something else in between. As it is, I just turn the thing on, and look at it. I go from screen to screen, not necessarly looking at anything, just needing to look.

It wasnt me. I just remember someone posting about it so I signed up. I think ardent and I signed up at the same time. But it is amazing how many people are playing it now. Sometime around October we had like 12 people on the list and now its massive and the fed thing is up to 17 members now when before we scrapped to get the mininum of 6. :)
I joined the last year around May or June, but then I forgot about hattrick, unfortunately.
Ahem, let me shed light on the subject. If my memory does not fail me...the one who got both Illini and myself started...is no other than NYFAN with a "hattrick.org?" post. I looked at it, thought, wow, a lot of people signed up for this...and signed up as well. Most of the original people who signed up dropped out...but a few of us...Illini, myself, Horned are still around. I don't remember if DK was part of the group.
However, I do feel responsible for the spread. I apologize to everyone. Wait, that's not right. I don't apologize. You will all have to suffer. Sorry, it's not my idea. Hattrick told me so.

Good memory. I KNEW we kept you around for a reason. :)
If I'm not mistaken, bbor and myself joined in the first wave as well. He's a game fiend and I'm, well, nosy. [We were suffering withdrawal symptoms from CSMB at the time, I believe.]
I was previously kept around to help "even the odds" for the odd team in trivia bouts. However, I have since switched teams, and abstain from all sport trivia contests so that everyone else has a chance. I was just dominating and it was embarassing.
I felt like a Wig for a while. =-)

Is there any advantage/disadvantage to accepting a friendly overseas? I just was offered a match in England (seems like since I'm in last place of the lowest series, I get a lot of offers to boot teams' morale).
Just wondering if the midweek travel overseas tires my players out, or if I potentially could make more $$ off the match.

The big disadvantage is the $6000 travel fee you have to pay to play an away international friendly. This probably means that you'd lose money unless they drew LOTS of fans.
The advantage is that your players earn double experience, but it's still 5 times less than what they'd earn playing in a league match.

02-20-2003, 01:09 PM
Ouch. The 6k sounds like a rough deal (especially when no one in their right mind would come see my misfits play).
One more quick question, what is the impact of firing a player? Or bascially, if I can't get anyone to bite on the transfer wire, is there a reason why I shouldn't fire the player to avoid the wage hit?
SplitPersonality1
02-20-2003, 01:29 PM
Just want you all to know - that I officially hate you guys for talking up hattrick and getting me hooked.
Was it 6k for traveling? I thought it was less than that. At any rate, if you get a team that draws well for friendlies, it's not that bad. I was pulling in about 6 to 8k for international friendlies...I thought that was covering the trip cost...maybe I was wrong!
NevStar
02-20-2003, 03:28 PM
From the rules:
Obviously, flight tickets and hotels are expensive stuff, so you need to pay 6.000 US$ (or whatever equivalent in your own currency) for each International friendly. Friendlies withing your own country are still free though. On the other hand, International friendlies tend to attract more spectators than regular friendlies.
About firing:
I know immediately firing a youth pull has no adverse effects. If you fire an established player, there may or may not be a small spirit decrease.
Shoot. I'll have to average out my last couple of international friendlies to see if I can still issue the guarantee to receive your travel money back.
daedalus
02-20-2003, 04:24 PM
You sort of have to be careful who you accept overseas games with. You COULD make a small amount of money if the weather is acceptable and the team is sufficiently popular. I think I did, uhhh, once. Made US$100 or something like that for my drubbing.
Oh . . . and my worst loss beats yours, Horned: 10-0 about 3 weeks ago. In a league game. Ow.
We could sit comfortably for a couple of weeks.
Did you have every player possible playing defensive? I did!
DataKing
02-20-2003, 05:30 PM
Hmmm...it appears that my worst loss ever was a 6-nil drubbing at the hands of the Crap Daddies (fun team names in this game). That was in last season's Windy City Cup. There are some high-quality teams in Chicagoland, let me tell ya!
Oh, and I am not to blame for this phenomenon. RavenHawk is the one who got me hooked in the first place.
It's all NYFAN's fault.
Horned and I did our best to spread the crack around, and by golly, it worked really well!
My goal at the moment is to get the good old Skydog assimilated.
After that, maybe I'll work on Ryan.

02-20-2003, 07:42 PM

Well I have a couple of announcements:
1) The Midwest Ice Storm FC are officially supporters with a app in to the FOFC Fed.
2) Looking to add to our Fan Club - The Blizzard Bunch
3) Still hoping to get a shot at promotion...last match if the year is against the #1 team, and we are tied in pts...but his squad is way better in paper.
4) Currently in the middle of a 10 match win streak.
5) Still hoping to beat Ardent in the FOFC Cup and move to the Semi's, although without getting a big head happy to be in the Quarters.
6) Looking for a friendly for this week.
7) If you want another game to get you sucked in that is not quite as time addictive. Try Simulated Sports College BBall game. Pretty simple and a good challenge as you play against 250+ other teams in a mock world.

How many goalies does the average team carry?
What ability level?
Keep in mind I am hovering around the $0 dollar mark waiting for my youth squad to pull in some cash.
I carry one. Most teams carry two, and I've heard of teams with three.
Most carry 2 so that they can protect the starter from friendlies...or that they train keepers. That's fine.
I have had only one keeper for a long time now. I haven't had an injury to any keeper yet either.
If I do, I'll simply buy another off the market. There's sure to be one that is at least somewhat useable for purchase before the next match.
That way I avoid paying the salary of an additional keeper, which are kind of high priced.

I carry 22 players typically, my starting squad and my second team. The second team plays in friendly matches and act as backups for the starters.
20-21. One less because of the lack of a second keeper. I sometimes start one player at a different position for both games...in that case, I'll have 20 or even less.

Quiksand, I am with you 100%. I am trying to find the secret in making money via player turnovers. I will probably end up carrying somewhere between 25 and 35 players until the end of this season, since I am completely out contention anyway.
At the start of season 19, I may settle down to a more reasonable number. I'm playing by ear.
Right now I have 20, but I'm looking to have 22.

I realize I don't have my team yet, but it seemed to allow me to log-in before. It made me think there was stuff I could do, even though I don't have a team, such as check out conferences or talk to people and what not.
Anyway, now it doesn't. I changed my password, so I thought that might be it. But when I went through lost password, the one it sent me was what I expected. And then I went back to the site, and it still didn't work. I was very careful about what username and password I put in (the correct ones, of course).

Alright, Hattrick breathren, I have a question for you. One of my defenders is suspended. It says he is suspended on his player page and he has a little red card next to his picture. However, when I go to set defenders for my match tomorrow, his name is not greyed out or anything and I'm able to set him into my lineup.
Is this a bug? Will he automatically be replaced by someone else when gametime arrives? I thought players who were suspended were forced to miss one league match. What gives?

Do not put him in your line-up. Even though he is not grayed-out or anything, he still cannot play in your next league match. I believe that, if you did list him as a starter, you would play the entire match short a man.
Best just to list a different defender as your starter.

And also, how the hell does powerful affect a keeper?
I would guess little to no effect. The biggest effect seems to be that they'd tire out more in sunny weather at positions where they run around a lot and more able to handle the slippery of rain a bit better. But, they don't run around a lot. So, I'd imagine little or no effect.

Chief, I've had the same thing happen to me on occasion. What seems to work for me is to make sure I'm at the "USA" page before trying to log in. (Note: I applied for a team in the "USA", if you applied for a team in another league would probably want to use that page.)

This wouldn't surprise me at all. Presently we're at 2,543 teams in the U.S., and there's only room for 2,728. To give you guys an idea of how quickly this thing is growing, I've been keeping a rough track of the number of teams in the U.S.
9/20/02 - 1,601
11/4/02 - 1,801
12/10/02 - 2,135
1/4/03 - 2,206
1/26/03 - 2,326
2/22/03 - 2,543
At the rate the U.S. league is growing, we could feasibly run out of openings by the end of March.
Hey, at least I wouldn't be on the bottom league anymore!
Hmm...i'm sure there will be some attrition at the end of this season

Well, GM George fixed my log in. Yay!
Now, I'm back to just waiting for a team. If Jeeber's wait is any indication, I should get a team late tomorrow or sometime Monday. But then, when I first joined (yesterday), there were 42 teams ahead of me on the waiting list. Now there are just 14. So, maybe I will be in by midday tomorrow at this rate.

This is just my opinion* so, y'know, grain of salt and all that, but I'd consider selling the kid to pad the bottomline. I've always had more luck with forwards with both scoring and passing than one with just scoring (ie, inadequate/passable versus passable scoring). I haven't had too much luck with good rating scoring forwards who doesn't have the passing to back it up. Mileage varying and all that.

Wow. How bad was the injury?
Hrm. Weak isn't too bad, especially given his age. If you want to keep him and use him long term, I'd strongly consider training in passing for a bit. At Weak, he'd only be two spots away from passable there.
Both Jerome Bettis and Dave Sumner, my solid scorers, are weak passers.
Jerome led V.92 in scoring last season, and Sumner is my leading scorer this season.

Voila. Differing opinion. :)
None of my scorers are solid and I only play my wingers on offensive, so I don't know if that means anything. If I had a solid scorer on hand, maybe my opinion would be different. I mean, I probably wouldn't pass up a solid scorer/weak passer in favour of a inadequate passer/passable passer.
Of course, too each his own. :)
Bettis led the v.92 in scoring last year as a passable scorer. Passing may be somewhat important for mids, but I have my doubts as to the importance for my forwards.

I banged out a 4-1 away win in my 1st league game. Problem is, my guy who scored 2 goals this game (named Garfield Hooker) got red carded in the 52nd. Best I could do was passable with my center D.
Overall I'm happy though, I kicked some ass, and moved from last to sixth. So far I'm 2-0 outscoring 8-3.

I won 5-0 against my league's worst team. However, I am more excited that one of my players, Hector Li, recorded his first career hat trick and my left and central defense were rated "formidable," while my right defense was rated "solid." These were my first two "formidable" ratings, so although I'm $250,000 in debt, I have a reason to be proud.
Incidentally, how deep do you have to be in debt before Hattrick takes your team away from you? Obviously I'm not taking on payroll or anything and I'm doing my best to trim costs but should I be worried my team might be taken away from me?

I just got a team, and the first thing i did was make a little bitty mistake...The guy listed as my backup keeper was Wretched in Keeper so i decided to put him on the market...his value was $29,000 so i asked for $20,000....Now after reading up on the game some more These are his ratings:
Stamina: Wretched Keeper: Wretched
Playmaking: Poor Passing: Inadequate
Winger: Inadequate Defending: Wretched
Scoring: Inadquate Set Pieces: Poor
From the looks of his ratings he should be playing forward but I listed him on the transfer wire as a Keeper, is there anyway to change this? Can i take him off of the transfer wire? Is $20,000 asking way to much for this guy, to low?
If one of you would like to pick him up...his name is Xavi Matas, 25 years.

Don't worry too much about it. Most usually search by ratings & completely ignore the position they're listed under.
I'm guessing he probably won't get any bids, as he's too old to train, and only useful as a stopgap starter.
If he does get bids, you can always outbid that team & buy him back. In this case, all you'd pay is the agent fees (3% of the buying cost, I think). Good luck!

There are 5 divisions in the US, so you're in the next to last division, I'd say most people get teams in division 5.
There are not positions per se. Rather, players have specific abilities, and it is up to you to determine by these abilities where each person should play. There seems to be a pretty good run down of this in the about link, but I didn't look at it but for a second. Basically, try to find players with certain abilities that look to go well with certain positions (i.e. defending, wing, and stamina for the wing; defending, passing and stamina for the center d)
Hope that helps.

Well to be perfectly honest, 99.9% of all discussion goes on in this board. The goal when ardent and I formed the fed was to get people in a more familiar surrounding and we tossed the idea back and forth about having a tournament. We didnt even know if we could pull the first one off.
Next season will be massive as we have 50+ teams on the list so a change in format to group play may be a necessity for the Cup. I have to ponder that pretty quickly.
Easy Mac, yeah but you dont have to be a supporter to play in the FOFC Cup or consolation rounds or anything.
Just in perspective, the lowest fed on the top-15 has 200-something members. I never dreamed we would be hitting 20 members by now.

Which of these 2 keepers should I start? Fernandez was the listed keeper when i got the team, but in his first game her gave up 6 goals :(.
David Fernández (8440211)

A pleasant guy who is temperamental and honest.
Has poor experience and inadequate leadership abilities.
Speciality: Technical
Nationality: USA
Assessed value: 24 000 US$

They are both poor in goaltending...should I start Moore who is younger, and rated the same, or should I start Fernandez who is older has more experience, but gave up 6 goals...Should I get rid of the guy who is not going to start for me? And lastly Fernandez has [Technical] next to his information when I look at my players, what does this mean?

Passable is quite expensive to start, even if you were in a crunch, an inadequate goalie maybe better suited. Could be a 75000 price diff. I have been winning with one, in fact he just improved to passable.
I have one for sale on the transfer market now..

Stamina: wretched Keeper: inadequate
Playmaking: disastrous Passing: disastrous

Currently going for 26000, ends in about 10 hrs.
I think most passable goalies will go near 100000, though you may find one a little cheaper. I also agree you will need to work toward a better keeper if you want your team to improve.
If you have to, start the one with solid form.

Lloyd Elrod (8486894)

Has excellent experience and passable leadership abilities
Now everytime I look at him I'm going to be thinking of Lord Elron for some reason... then it will lead me to the Matrix... " I'm going to enjoy watching you die Mr Anderson"..."My name, is Neo"

He is passable in defending, passing, and scoring...I am thinking I will be running the 4-5-1 since my coach likes a defensive game, should I use him as a mid-fielder? Forward? Defender?

I'd play him as a midfielder, depending on the rest of your team. If you have a lot of playmakers on your team, he'd also make a good choice for an offensive central defender.
And, as for how much to spend...
Don't get 350,000 in debt like I am right now. 'Nuff said. :)

Doug5984: Like Coffee Warlord mentioned, it depends on what other sorts of players you have. Lou looks like he'd be best played at either forward or defender. If you have a better option at one of those positions, then consider playing him at the other one.
I do see one problem with having Lou on your team, however. I see that he has the highest leadership rating on your club, which means that he is automatically the team "clown." This means that he is sort of the "locker room leader" of the team. Combine that with his "nasty" personality, and he may have a detrimental affect on your team's spirit and confidence.
Now, having said that, don't run right out and sell him. He's the most highly valued player on your team, and has some talent. Just be aware of the fact that he may be having detrimental "side-effects."

Another question...
I noticed that you can just Fire players...Is firing a player better than trying to just sell him off for $1,000? Is there penalty for firing a player? I have a 3rd string Keeper on my team who is valued at $2,000 should I try and sell him for $1,000 or just fire him?
samifan24
02-24-2003, 05:14 PM
The penalty for firing a player is $1,000 I believe. As you noted, $1,000 is also the listing fee, so if you think you can get something for the guy, then go ahead a list him but if you really think he's a dud, just get rid of him.

No it does cost you 1,000. If it doesnt, then I wonder where that money has been going when I fire a player. Maybe he steals it. The bastard. ;)

Doug5984, the first things I did when I got my team were:
1) find a passable keeper
2) put youth squad to 20k
3) sell ALL my players 27 years old or older, no matter what (especially the good ones)
Of course, when I got the team, we were in last place, so I figured, what the hell difference if I lose. Well, with the money I got, I now have ALL starters passable and am in 4th place (fairly handily) with 7 games in a row won or tied. It amazes me I beat people in my series. I think some Hattrickers are just stupid (I know that is hard to believe).
Anyway, the point is, if you aren't moving up in the standings, get $$$ for old players while you can (rules say players start to slide at age 27, I think). Build for the future, and listen to those on the board who are much better than I. That's what I did, and they always steer me straight.

Is this one really a good thing to do? If players start declining after 27, will anyone even buy them? I have 10 players that are 27 or older, 6 of them are on my starting roster, and 1 on the reserve. My team is currently # 4 in my league division whatever thing...Is it really a good idea to just get rid of so many starting players?

I'm 99% sure firing a player is free. Transfer listing him is 1000, youth pull is 2000.
It costs $1,500 to fire a specialist, maybe that's what you all were thinking of.

02-24-2003, 11:08 PM
Doug5984, if you are #4 in your series, I would NOT sell ALL the oldsters. As i said, I was in last place when I did it and had no idea I could go undefeated for 7 straight. If you are top 4 in series, I believe there is no chance of worry about relegation whatever level you are.
In that case I would sell the worst of your old guys. You will eventually be quite surprised at the stupidity of some Hattrickers and what they pay at times. Remember, dozens of newbs come into the game EVERY DAY and lots have no clue about transfers. They see a passable and bid without looking at other important stuff.
Again, if I was in 4th, I would sell only marginal oldies and then sell others as you clinch upper half of series. Ask other FOFC folks to see what they say. That is how I did it, and it has worked so far.

I see older players selling all the time. It can be quite a good move to pick up an older impact player cheap for just one season, or until his ratings go down. Also older players usually are experienced, and can also have high leadership.

For those of you confused (or not), my point was, IF IN REBUILDING MODE, sell your older players.
I, too, have purchased an old dude as stopgap for, as an example, when I had a player go down for 4 weeks. He WAS cheaper, though I planned to sell him in the week when my guy came back.

mrushh,
if you finish 5th or 6th in your division, you will have to play a match against a lower division winner to avoid relegation. Half of those teams automatically move up, the other half play a qualification match, against the 5th or 6th of a higher division. All 7th and 8th finishers go down unless they are already in the basement.
So, unless they are well clear of 5th, they can still be relegated.

What is the lowest division? Right now I am # 4 in V.237, should I be worried about falling to Div VI? do they even have that? I was planning on going younger on my team this season in the hopes that in the next season or the season after that I will have a very good young team.

There is the possibility of Hattrick adding a 6th division in the U.S. at the end of the coming season. But if they did this, I don't think bottom-feeder teams in Division 5 would be threatened with relegation to Division 6 this season.

Don't worry too much about it. Most usually search by ratings & completely ignore the position they're listed under.
They have positions on the transfer market? ;)
I am the Stonecutters in USA.IV (I think I have that right). Is that good?
Wow- that's pretty impressive. I won't be seeing IV until at least next season if not 2 from now.
You freaks and your 4-5-1's.
Run and Shoot is where it's at, boys. Defense is for wimps.
I try to mix it up, I run a 3-5-2 but with a winger and middie always playing offensive.
Defense is definately good for me... How about this record since I took over:
Matches GF-GA Points
Midwest Ice Storm FC 7 24 - 2 21
5. Houston Hippopotami 7 25 - 8 18
I'll take my record but my 4-0 defeat at the hands of the league leader last week was pretty sobering.
Which of these 2 keepers should I start? Fernandez was the listed keeper when i got the team, but in his first game her gave up 6 goals .
Just echoing what most people said: get an inad goalie. You should be able to get a young one for about $20K if you are patient. Passables are nice but they'll go for close to $100K.
Now everytime I look at him I'm going to be thinking of Lord Elron for some reason... then it will lead me to the Matrix... " I'm going to enjoy watching you die Mr Anderson"..."My name, is Neo"
At least I'm not the only one half expecting: "And you, too, shall be in the Fellowship, Mr Anderson" in that voice of his. I figured that was a voice for the Matrix but if LotR is any indication, he actually speaks like that.
Edit: What would you guys suggest I do with this guy:
Lou Lynch
He's a forward, easily since he's good at both passing and scoring unless you really need a defender. Actually, if it were me, I would sell him since he's 28 and start training young guys you can afford with his cash.
Doug5984, if you are #4 in your series, I would NOT sell ALL the oldsters. As i said, I was in last place when I did it and had no idea I could go undefeated for 7 straight. If you are top 4 in series, I believe there is no chance of worry about relegation whatever level you are.
Might want to wait until after the season or early next season since 4th place nets you some cash at the end of the season.

Hehe don't worry Quiksand. This guy is the undisputed king of the transfer market:
From Sweden:
fumpen (38794)
Total Purchases 318 338 886 US$
Total Sales 360 443 244 US$
Difference 42 104 359 US$
Average (bought) 254 264 US$
Average (sold) 293 521 US$
Average (bought + sold) 16 978 US$
2475 transfers!
Edit: Today for instance, he bought 4 players and sold 8!
I'm guessing that he doesn't feel that the team spirit drop affects him.

Two things
1) He is head of the "Daytraders" Fed.
2) He has way to much time on his hands.
HornedFrog Purple
02-25-2003, 06:42 PM
Hehe yeah. When I used to read the boards on occasion he would get flamed constantly. So then some people got together to try and run "daytraders" out of the game and they would send reports to the GM's for the littlest thing about a transfer. It was quite funny to read.
Anyways that little group made so many bogus charges I think they were disbanded but there is still a small group that will just police all day.
I have absolutely no problem with a daytrader buying a youth pull from me because:
1. Most of them suck. karate is good at what he does though.
2. The more times they sell my player the more money I get for originally owning him, so I get free money for their hit-or-miss gambling.

Next season is about 5 weeks off.
HAM is pretty good, it helps to organize things, and makes it simpler to understand. I'm going without it for a while to see how I do, as once you get the feel for the game, its not as necessary. Probably more of a help with a large squad, as its hard to manage all the players. Good for newbies.

HAAAH!...faster than you can say HEAT...i fixed my dumb ass spelling:D
Found this on the "newbie" conference page: The respondent was a Mod.
???? i heard training passing benefited defenders most
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You must have heard wrong, defenders don't use passing at all. Central defenders don't contribute to the attack at all, only midfield when played offensively, and wingbacks only contribute to the attack with their winger skill, not passing. It's good for midfield and forwards.
Then how do I have central defenders scoring from time to time? I agree that the passing doesn't affect them, but to say that they don't contribute to the offensive attack at all doesn't make much sense, to me that is.
I'm in the same boat as you...perhaps what was meant is that the defenders don't increase your offensive attack. Say I play my defender offensively. Well, that helps the midfield play, not my forwards play. He may score still, but not necessarily because he was playing offensive.
Last week, I had a defensive wingback (Muniz) score a goal. It was a combination of a terrible team and my team having too many chances to score. How often will a defensive wingback or defender score? In my opinion, not very often. They score, but not near the rate as forwards or midfielders.
DataKing
02-26-2003, 10:20 AM
I think this is how it works...
Defenders do not contribute to your attack rating, but when your attack rating determines that a goal has been scored by your team, a random factor decides who does the scoring. Forwards will get more than their fair share of the goals, and your midfielders and wingers will score some. Your defenders have a relatively small chance of "being selected" to score the goal, but it is always a possibility.
Also remember that defenders can score "event goals" based on their specialties. Arlen Lucas, one of my starting wingbacks, has scored 7 goals in 25 matches, far more than either of my other starting defenders. The vast majority of these have been headers off of corner kicks (Arlen has Specialty: Head).
