Someday soon I might have one of my own. Sorta...kinda...but it's long-distrance and unconsumated at the moment so I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch in December.

That's all. Just a very happy man right now and wanted to puff my chest out a bit.

Feel free to flame away. Doubt I'll even hear you.

December she's coming to Boston for 2 weeks...

We've been talking on and off for a while, but it just recently developed into something substantial.

And FYI...she's definitely the one doing the pushing on it on an emotional level, which is okay by me in this case.

Long-term "relationships" don't usually work, but long term "really close emotional friends that do it when they can" can actually work quite well.

It's usually the chick that ruins those though.

How long distance is it? What has your relationship been up to this point?

Congratz btw! As someone who has recently gotten into a serious relationship myself, I know the excitement you are feeling :)

Good for you!

Just beware that people tend to be different "Long-Distance" than they are in your face. I'm not talking just physically, but mentally as well... We all do it, as we try to present the image of who we want the other person to see.

(As for myself, I think I may actually be too bitter, jaded & lazy for anything to ever actually happen...)

You need to consummate the relationship.

With sex hopefully.

Unless it's a dude. Then just go for the handshake.

That's what I told my son. He finally figured it out, but not before he blew a load of money to fly to Canada to see some girl he "met" online.

What's with all the hate for long distance relationships? My wife and I were in a NJ to Oklahoma relationship (started online) for a number of months when we first met. We've now been married over ten years.

Good luck, DT.

While online and long distance relationships certainly have the odds built against them for success, they CAN succeed and trying to force poeple to abandon them is rather assinine. I understand this was your son and any good parent tries to protect their children from such things, but your comment seems to show a major disdain for the very idea that his relationship may have worked out.

People, be they sons, daughters, friends, relatives or whatever, have to learn for themselves. If you talk them out of something then they haven't experienced anything on their own and it holds no true value. I can tell young people to stay away from tiajuana until my eyes turn purple, but most of them would have to experience that disgusting cess pool to really understand WHY i told them not to.

Stay out of people's relationships, let things fall where they may. Its better for everyone invlved that way.

*Just for the record I have had numerous online AND long distance relationships (and some that were both) and while I went through my share of heartache I also found my best friend and wife this way, we have spent 10 wonderful years together and just enjoyed our 4th anniversery. just because its not considered the "norm" does NOT mean its any less respectable or can be any less successful.

Two years into our relationship my wife & I spent about a year a continent apart. We've now been together for 10 years and married for 5. It can happen, but it's not easy.

I agree flere, I tend to get tired and frustrated with the generic "long distance/internet relationships never work" argument.

Because technically they don't. At some point, the "long distance" has to be dropped from the relationship label. If the two people have the right personality traits to put up with a long distance relationship for awhile, even over a year, then sure they can get through it until they no longer are a long distance apart.

A few months for most people would be easy, but once it gets to be over 6 months, I doubt 90% of the people can go through that.

And I would say it's vastly different to be in a relationship for a few years and then have to spend time apart than it is starting out a relationship long distance.

It's very awkward! But if she lets you pick her up from the station and you go back to your place and start bangin' within an hour, it tends to break the ice.

Depends.

Out of the times I've done this travel to meet a chick from online thing, one time it was extremely awkward, another time we were on the bed inside of half an hour, and the rest of the times it's been a case of chattiness on both sides, but with nothing happening.

Amen, Cam. I met my wife 6 weeks before I left D.C. for Brussels. We did the long distance relationship, New York to Brussels, for an entire year before she moved out there and we were together.

The long distance aspect wasn't ideal, but it worked. We made an effort to try and see each other at least once a month (which included a couple of weekend trips from Brussels to New York) and talked a lot on the phone.

Long distance relationships -can- work, but their probability for success is significantly lower, because they require more of an emotional, time, and financial investment than local relationships (in my opinion anyway).

I've been in a long-distance relationship for about a year now I guess. She was gonna move down here over the summer after finishing up her MA, but happened to stumble on her dream job in Lexington.

There are definitely positive aspects to long-distance relationships. They're like buying a monitor from Costco--you could probably get a better deal somewhere else, but in the meantime you've got a brand new monitor at home and the return process is painless if you find something more to your liking.*
