Cornell is a machine. LeNeveu has the potential to win the tournament all by himself. In Game 2 of the series with RPI he made saves he had NO business making in the first period. RPI should hae been up a quick 2-0. And he did it in the other games too.
Plus, they have the size of an NHL team.

I've heard that they are a defensive team with a great goalie, playing BC to get to the Frozen Four is going to be a tough game.
Mankato is a 2 line team with goalies that can stand on their head(either Jensen or Volp).
I'm also liking the Gophers chances to get back to the Frozen 4 with Mercyhurst coming here and us playing either North Dakota or Ferris State.
The #1 seed that has it rough is CC, they get either Maine or Michigan on Michigan's ice.

IMO, Cornell is without a doubt the best team in the country.
In RPI's home game this year, Cornell played about as bad as they possibly could, and RPI played their best game of the season.
And Cornell won 3-2.
Team of destiny?

I like the Gophers chances with their draw.... but Cornell has a right to be a little upset with theirs... B.C and MSU, two tough, scrappy teams.

"The #1 seed that has it rough is CC, they get either Maine or Michigan on Michigan's ice."
What's shocking about that? A team from Colorado getting a #1 seed and having to play at Michigan for a right to advance. . . Never saw that one before.
Hockey and Women's Basketball. . . unbelievable.
For the record, I hope North Carolina defeats Colorado tomorrow in Women's Basketball. I love CU women's hoops. Even went to a few games this year. It's so unfair for NC to be a higher seed and play in Boulder it isn't even funny.
What a joke.

Troy, Troy, Troy, do we have to go through this again?!:)
The reason why this is, teams bid on regionals. If CC(or any team), wants to pay the money to host a regional, they can do it!
NCAA Hockey places host teams in their own arenas(or areas) for regionals to insure sellouts.
If CC had beat Minnesota on Saturday night in the conference tourney, they would have been placed in Minneapolis, also not a great place to be with how Minnesota is playing right now.
One more note, the seeding process in hockey is known before the season, so all teams know how it works going in, I have a few gripes with the system, but there is no perfect world.

4 games today, no upsets!
In the West
Ferris State beat North Dakota 5-2, thank god, I hate the Sioux! :D
The Gophers beat Mercyhurst 9-2, game was not close, the Gophers out shot Mercyhurst 27-8 in the second period.
Tomorrow Minnesota plays Ferris State for the West Region Championship!
In the Northeast
Boston U beat Harvard 6-4
and
UNH beat SCSU 5-2
Don't have many details about these games because they weren't on TV in my area, or I was at the Gopher game.
I do know that UNH scored 10 seconds into the game.
Tomorrow UNH plays BU for the Northeast Region Championship!
Lots of games tomorrow, Cornell the #1 team in the country plays Mankato, or Minnesota State University at Noon eastern in their first round matchup.

Michigan vs Maine was a classic.
It was intense, just a classic.
Al Montoya, Michigans 18 year old Phenom goalie was sensational. He finished with 35 saves, and now has to rest up to play the best offense in the land.
I can't wait.

Holy Crap!! And I thought the "Homecourt Advantages" the NCAA Basketball Committee gave certain teams was bad.... Syracuse, Marquette (somewhat), Texas a year ago and this year as well..
Check out the Hockey Tournament.
Shame on the Committee for putting Michigan in the Ann Arbor Regional and Minnesota in a regional on their home ice as well (although in the Gophers case, at least you could say they sort of earned that right a bit).
Does one of the higher ups in NCAA Hockey want to make sure the Wolverines get the best shot possible at playing in the Frozen Four or what? Ridiculous.

Hockey regionals are bid on in advance, and the rule is teams stay at home to make sure tickets are sold. That's just the way it goes.
Now, you do have to make the tournament too, so, that is also a factor.
NCAA hockey doesn't have the big TV contract that basketball does, if it did, then you would see some changes in how and where teams play.

The NCAA purposely does that to try and draw bigger crowds out to the games. It may not be exactly fair but, everybody knows its going to work out that way. I believe they are doing somewhat of the same thing in the women's basketball tourney but I'm not 100% sure.
EDIT: Nevermind :)

Cards,
I don't care how far the regionals are bid in advance. I'll be pissed if Michigan has to face CC in Colorado Springs as a #1 seed.
It's pathetic. You want your sport to be taken seriously and you do this? Some fans are worth the credibility of the entire tournament? I can't stand the way hockey and women's basketball do it. They may as well be like Division one football and not have a tournament at all. (I know, Anrh, you'd love that) :) :)

Troy,
It's a 16 team tournament and there is just not enough interest to have the neutral sites that basketball has, and even in basketball, the top seeds are given paths that could be suspect in your world.
About the only thing I can concede to you on this is, I think playing in Mariucci arena or Yost is to play in the Xcel Center or Joe Louis Arena. To move the regionals to a place like Chicago just wouldn't work, Chicago is probably not going to bid to host one, simply because there is not going to be enough ticket buyers. Pathetic in your eyes maybe, but you have to be a realist and realize that $ drive sports and college hockey is not big enough to get closer to what you would like to see, at least yet.

I don't see how it's any different than a pro team "earning" home-field advantage in the playoffs...
Granted Michigan didn't exactly earn their home ice, but I would like to think that a handful of championships and enthusiatic fan support gets you somewhere.
And as someone said before, they're already in place. You have to make the tourney to take advantage of it, which is no small feat, and it's available for everyone to bid on.
I'm fairly positive within the next couple seasons the Gophers or Wolverines will end up having to go out east to face BC or BU on their home ice, or something to that effect. What goes around, comes around. The best you can do is take advantage of the present season's situation. (I.E. Gophers last season)
TroyF
03-30-2003, 09:40 AM
Cards and Scholes,
You don't see how Michigan, who has now got to play on their home ice twice in two years without "earning" a number 1 seed gets an unfair advantage?
If it's so tough to get into the regionals and there was a likelihood Michigan wouldn't be there, why not send Michigan to another bracket if they don't "earn" the #1 seed?
I'm sorry, I simply can't take college hockey seriously as a sport when teams who actually do earn #1 seeds routinely get sent on the road to earn their trip to go to the Frozen Four.
It's as silly as giving LSU a #1 seed in Women's Hoops and telling them that they have to beat Stanford on the road to go to the Final Four. (thankfully Stanford lost so the sham ended, sadly two #3 seeds were knocked out on the road)
I'll end the debate here, I do ***understand*** why it takes place. I do not not agree with it (no matter what those reasons are) and never will.

Troy,
I guess it's because you are not a College Hockey fan that you don't accept the system. Life is not fair and neither is sports.
The fans of the sport accept the system as it is, the only other solution is to have home series, but in a tournament setting that is hard to do.
Next year, the Gophers are probably going to be better than they are this year, what does that mean? It means a trip to CC or Grand Rapids, Michigan. If they are good enough, they will win anyplace. That's just how it goes.
Look at the NCAA BB tourney, is it fair that Syracuse, a 3 seed is playing in Albany today against #1 seed Oklahoma? I don't hear the outrage about that.
Why get up in arms about it and just enjoy the games, as it's been seen lately, there is much more to life than sports.

In Troy's defense, he just wants things to be absolutely fair. Is the system fair? No, but it is what it is. Most who follow it, understand how it works and why it is what it is and accept it.
I see both sides of this, and this year the Frozen 4 is in Buffalo, 2 and a half hours from the Cornell campus, do you think that Cornell has a edge? Sure they do, doesn't mean they are going to win it though, it's all about getting hot and lucky at the right time.

Any of the four teams left have a legitimate shot at winning it all. Cornell sure looks tough but are they *really* that good? I think they are. New Hampshire is playing their best hockey now but the loss of Lanny Gare hurts. I don't get to see the western teams much but Minnesota might be better than last year.
My prediction:
Minnesota vs Michigan - > Minnesota (5-2)
New Hampshire vs Cornell -> New Hampshire (1-0 OT)
Minnesota vs New Hampshire -> New Hampshire (3-2)

Castlerock, the only Cornell hockey I've seen this year is in the Regional, so I don't know. Some doubt the strength of their conference and that is why they have that good of a record. We shall see come Thursday. You are absolutely right about UNH losing Gare, he was one of their PK specialists too.
Minnesota doesn't have the top shelf players they had last year, but the depth of the team is much better. If it turns out to be UNH-Minnesota, wowza, it will be one hell of a up and down game, the ice may melt from all that speed!
Are you a UNH fan?

Yup, I am a UNH fan. What gave it away? :-)
I think the UNH-Cornell game is too close to call. Should be a great game.
Gare just does everything. Scoring/PP/PK and defense. Calendar can fill in (as well as can be expected) and they beat BU without him so we'll see.
I think Minnesota handles Michigan.
That sets up a UNH/Minnesota final. 2 teams that can skate! But Ayers stands on his head for UNH in a 3-2 final. At least that's what I'm hoping for.

So, being from that area, do you understand Bob Norton better than me?! hehehe
He's kind of like the Al Mcguire of College Hockey, now if we could just get Thorne to do the play by play.

Bob Norton does have a bit of an accent, doesn't he? He's been calling UNH hockey games for years.

when was the last time that the finals didn't go into overtime? It seems like every year the game does.

Welcome to Riotville. You would hope the students had learned from last year. Hopefully the police are downtown smacking kids around. I'm sure we'll hear complaints about police brutality tonight, but I think some well placed nightsticks are in order.

BACK TO BACK!!!!!!
GOPHERS WIN! 5-1
Castlerock, congrats to UNH for a great season, if they had been playing anybody but the Gophers, I would have been cheering for them.
About the people rioting, those people aren't fans, they are morons that have absolutely nothing to do with the hockey team.
To anyone interested, checkout the front page of the Gopher site.

Actually it was worse last year, the cops were a little more prepared this year.
Onto a brighter note!
Went down to the local U store to buy some championship gear today, and all the players were sitting outside a local establishment, and got to see the Trophy and congratulate them on a great season! Potulny even put the trophy on the ground to try to get my daughter(4yo) to come over and hold it, she got shy though. Very classy and gracious guys, they represent Minnesota well!

Who looks good for next year already? I know, it's early. But I assuming Minnesota, with its youth and talent, are the favorites already. Any suprise teams, like a Cornell?

The Gophers will be a preseason #1. It's hard for me to tell who will be tough out east, because I'm simply not familiar with the eastern recruits. In the WCHA, Minnesota, UND, SCSU, UMD and Mankato will probably be the teams to beat.
Minnesota is losing one senior, and maybe Vanek if the NHL team that drafts him ponying up the big cash, so, they will be difficult to beat during the season.
