My 9 year old niece was diagnosed with long QT syndrome, which is the disease that causes seemingly healthy kids to drop dead on the playground/ sports field.
They found in because she needed an EKG for something else. She has to go into the hospital tomorrow for 3 days so they can get her meds figured out.
My sister is a widowed mom and this has really taken a toll on her. The doctors say that she will be ok and it's a good thing they caught it. Still, the thought of her in the hospital is very disheartining to me. I helped raise her and she is the closest thing I have to a child of my own.
Please say a little prayer for her since every little bit helps.

Unless the QTC is very long, this usually isn't too serious. I know a lot about it because some psychiatric medications can prolong the QTC. However, she will have to be careful the rest of her life that she doesn't take any medications that prolong it further. That being said, she will certainly be in my prayers.

Will definitely say a prayer for your niece.
As EF27 says it can be relatively benign as long as the QTC is not too long. My Mother was diagnosed with this in her thirties and is now 62 and it has been totally manageable. Thank god they caught it early.

This is how they found out, they were gonna put her on Ritalin (sp?) so they did an EKG before hand and discovered this.
Thanks everyone for your continued prayers.

Lucky that the doc who was going to do this actually did an EKG. I'm apalled at how many of my colleagues don't ever order an EKG before putting kids on stimulants such as Ritalin, despite some good evidence that it should be done as a routine screening before starting a stimulant. I won't start any stimulant until I get the results of an EKG.

Wow, that's gotta be scary for any parent. Glad they caught it, but I'll keep her in my thoughts. And your sister.

Thanks everyone. So far so good. She got settled into her own room and she didn't have to wear a gown so she is comfy. The room also has a pull out chair/sleeper so my sister will be comfy. She had pizza and chickef fingers for lunch so she probably won't want to come home!
So everything seems ok so far, thanks everyone for your kind words.
