View Full Version : The FOFC Keeper League - 2009 Season
Tentative Schedule:
July 29th - Owners Meeting. We have three proposals up for voting. They will be posted in this thread and you can post your vote in here.
August 3rd - All keepers are due, leaving seven days before the draft to set a preference list. Remember, we have four keepers this year (QB/RB/WR/Last season rookie.)
August 10th - Draft starts with a 12 hour limit per pick. The draft clock will be active from 10:00 AM EST until 12:00 AM EST. I'm thinking we will setup a dummy league at Sportsline, so we can use their extended draft feature. It has it bugs but I'd rather run it there than over the message board.
August 20th - Draft continues with normal draft rules. Two hours per pick with the clock active from 10:00 AM EST until 12:00 AM EST. You are encouraged to setup a draft list as the Sportsline "robot" tends to favor QB's.
We will be using Sportsline for the draft. It's unfortunate to have to use two sites, but Sportsline is the only site to offer the slow draft that I know of. I hope to have the draft room setup by this weekend.

All owners will need to vote on these proposals. Majority rules. Post your votes in this thread or via private message.
1. Expanding the playoffs. The top three teams in each division would go into the top bracket with the best record getting a bye.
The same goes for the bottom bracket. This would eliminate the middle bracket and. Yes or No
2. Limit the amount of years a player can be kept as a keeper. The amount of years a player can be kept would be limited to three.
This number would be reset if the player is moved in a trade. Also, keeping the player as the "rookie keeper" would count as a year
towards the count. If this proposal passes, 2009 would be the first year to count towards the three year limit. Yes or No
3. Defensive Scoring changes. Interceptions and Fumble Recoveries under this proposal would be revised to two points each. Also,
the points allowed totals would be modified under this proposal.
Shutout = 10
Defense gives up between 2-6 = 7
Defense gives up between 7-9 = 4
Defense gives up between 10-16 = 3
Yes or No
It should be noted that cubboyroy1826 will be taking over for H_B.
Welcome to the league. Feel free to ask any questions.
Would proposal 1 shorten the regular season by a game or extend the playoffs one week?
Would proposal 1 shorten the regular season by a game or extend the playoffs one week?

Obviously I'm not involved in this league, so feel free to just tell me to STFU :), but I have a comment on one of your rules:
Limit the amount of years a player can be kept as a keeper. The amount of years a player can be kept would be limited to three.
This number would be reset if the player is moved in a trade.
Part 1: Very good idea. Helps keep the draft pool fresh with new blood coming back into it on a rolling basis, which makes the draft more fun. My league does the exact same thing.
Part 2: This many times will defeat the primary objective of part 1. Teams could then just swap their about-to-expire keepers prior to the end of the third season ("many times" being the case because teams making a run at the title won't swap their studs), resetting the clock and keeping them out of the pool for another 3 years. And then 3 years later, do it again, and that player is retiring before he returns to the draft pool. Our league rules state a player may not appear on ANY roster for more than 3 consecutive seasons, including the year originally drafted.
Just my two cents...
MikeVic

I looked at that rule as at least forcing some trades. We don't have much trade activity, and I think I've only made one trade in the history of the league. So at least with this rule, we'd have to search out for the best trade if we can't keep someone again.

That much is true... we've been woeful about trading in this league.

I agree about your second point though, where the top players won't really see a draft again. I just think in this particular league, forcing any kind of trades is good enough right now.

...I just think in this particular league, forcing any kind of trades is good enough right now.
That was my thinking too. Granted this is only my second year, I have been in plenty of leagues where trading has been pretty much non-existent. If a stud never sees the draft again, that at least means that trades have been happening and that is a good thing I think.

Okay guys quick question. Do i have to keep a player at each position? The cupboard at QB and RB are pretty bare for the team. Eli is okay but nothing special and the Colts were obviously not happy with Addai. I am just trying to get a feel for what types of players will be in the draft pool as well.
ISiddiqui
07-29-2009, 10:27 AM
Nope. You get an extra pick at the end of the draft if you don't. Each keeper basically counts as a draft pick in the last 3 rounds. If you decide to keep only 2, then you get an extra draft pick. If you keep only 1, then you get two extra draft picks, etc.
MikeVic
07-29-2009, 10:28 AM
Yeah, so I think it's worth keeping guys like Eli and Addai, if nothing more than backups. They're better than what you'd get at the end of the draft.

RB Joseph Addai
WR/TE Dwayne Bowe
Rookie: DeSean Jackson
1. Yes
2. Yes (originally I was against this, but I think it gives people some more strategic decisions to make and potentially encourages more trading (as others have stated) which I favor)
3. Yes (modest improvement, but at least better than it has been)
Would people be ok with an addendum for 2. that if a new player takes over a franchise, any keepers in their third year get a one-year extension? The idea being that a team that might be miserable doesn't have to start with really cruddy talent and gives the new owner more options.

For cubbyroy and because some folks forgot this past season, repeating this from last season with a minor update:
For the benefit of the newer players, this rule has sometimes thrown people entering the league, it might be of use to clarify prior to drafting (if not, well, it didn't take a lot of time to put together):
Starting lineup min/max:
QB: 1/1
RB: 1/2
WR: 2/3
TE: 0/1
K: 1/1
DEF: 1/1
That means the following lineups for RBs / WRs / TEs would be legal:
2 RB, 3 WR ...or...
2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE ...or...
1 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE
I don't think there would be any other combo of RBs / WRs / TEs allowed.
This means you are not required to field a TE so long as you have enough WRs and RBs

In the event of a missed pick, the system will automatically pick a player for the owner based on the highest-ranked available player, on the owner's "My Draft List" player ranking, and then once that list is exhausted, according to rankings displayed on the ADP page.

Just to confirm, is trading now open for keepers / draft picks?

ive only been in the one season, so i am likely wrong, but it doesnt really make a lot of sense to me that we are snaking the draft order.
yeah, i get #1, but then i take a nap and sit around for 22 picks til i go again at 24...i dont get how this is supposed to help me improve my team...snake drafts are great for leagues that start from scratch, but in a keeper league where the table is tilted toward one end, i always thought the draft was supposed to level it out.

Yeah i also agree with snaking a keeper league might not make sense. This is definitely something that should be voted on next year.
With the three year keeper rule, drafting at the bottom of the round would be a huge disadvantage. I'm a certified loser in this league and I prefer a snake draft.
I personally have liked the snake drafts (even as someone who has been first or last on 3 occasions), but with the rookie keeper rule addition and the 3 yr rule addition (potentially pushing more talent than normal into the early draft every season), there might be some merit in changing it so the best finishing teams don't get a couple of premium players at the end of the first.
Or if that's too extreme, maybe make the first two rounds in order of finish and then snaking thereafter. That might mean round 1 would have to be done in a thread but I don't think that's a big deal.

I think it will be interesting to see how it works out this year and if the bottom tier teams don't show improvment then look at it.
It is odd though, the worst team picks 1st them not until 24th.

I'm actually more interested to see what the draft pool looks like the following season when the first round of rookie keepers from a season ago enter the draft (or else other players that were kept in their respective positions this season). I would think that should be a pretty strong draft.

Don't confuse "My Draft List" with pre-draft selections. The draft list, I think, will only kick in when your time runs out. Pre-draft selections supposedly are picked right away. To do the pre-draft selections go to the "For Owners" menu at the top of the page and then select "Draft" from the drop down menu. There you can add players you want to pick in a particular round.
Go to 'My team page' and 'Make a draft or pre-draft pick'. Then you can add players to your queue.
For the record, both of the above options bring you to the same page.

I was just about to ask: how do I make my pick? Could they have buried the "draft player" option any more?

Gambled trading down but I figured Rodgers would be there still and I need the stability at QB. Nice to know I am set there for the next 3 years.
Of course this is the year Quinn goes nuts and puts up 4000 yards and 30 TDs

As odd as this is to say, most of these picks have been kindof obvious to me. I'll have a subset of a couple of players left when it gets to me but, for the most part, I've taken what the draft has given as an "obvious" best player available. Kindof like the drafting version of the run-and-shoot ;)
Don't get me wrong- I had to decide between 4 QBs, 2 RBs, and a handful of WRs just now, but in the end, the decison seemed easy. Housh vs V Jackson was my only "tough" decision so far.
I'm sure it's going to get sketchier from this point on, tho.

are we going all weekend?
are we going all weekend?
I'm going to shut the timer off. Feel free to make your picks... feel free not to make your picks. This is going a little quicker than I remember from past years. Next year we should probably start a week later than we normally do.
Timer is off. Enjoy the weekend.
Just wondering...Have we had a pick go to the limit yet?

I don't believe so. And yeah, I think it's gone a good bit faster than in previous years.

Man, I am glad to the timer was off, but I feel like a dick for holding things up this weekend. Sorry guys. My pick is finally in.
The clock is back on with Saldana up to pick. We were supposed to be at a two hour limit starting today, but I'm going to run it at four hours since we're moving a little quicker than anticipated.

I think a lot of people are expecting to play a 3rd WR instead of a TE...I guess we will see which strategy works better!
sterlingice

Yeah, you don't have to play a TE and most 3rd WRs are better than a TE, hence the lack of TE picking

Exactly. I don't think I've drafted or picked up a TE ever in this keeper league.

Same. I mean, it would be one thing if, say, circa-2004 Tony Gonzalez were sitting out there at this point- he'd be worth more than a lot of 2nd WRs and even some #1's. But he's not
Then again, some of the TEs picked now are going to do better than their WR counterparts across the season.

You can't play 4 WRs though. You can play 3 WRs and a TE (though only 1 RB). I only have 3 RBs, I have 6 WRs, and I didn't see anyone left at any major position that interested me, so I grabbed a TE since he's decent. I'm pretty sure that's the first TE I've drafted in the past 3 or so years.
Either way, it barely matters. I can't remember a season where I didn't dump someone on the back end of my roster early on.
sterlingice
08-19-2009, 12:37 PM
Yeah, that's definitely true. But almost everyone is going to be playing 2 RBs. I think it's pretty rare to see a RB, 4 WR set in this league.

Yes, you can start 4 WRs as you have two slots where you can only start a WR, one slot where you start RB/WR, and another where you start WR/TE.
I'm able to get to the draft site now.

Ah, alright. Faulty reasoning then (though it makes me happier about my WR stable), though I still stand by 'I didn't like anyone so I picked a semi-decent (fantasy-wise) TE' and I'll throw a dart at a kicker who's left to end my draft.
EDIT: Site is back up for me as well.

For the record, I don't have an issue with your pick of Daniels, especially this late.
I took Clark a little earlier but I highly doubt he sees the field (or even makes the cut before the season starts) for us except because of injury woes or else bye week issues. I like him better than several WR2s out there, especially when he's healthy.
