I think I am a better NFL safety than Roman Harper. He's been at fault for at least 75% of the Seahawks succesful offensive plays so far.
Definitely the two worst defenses in an NFL playoff game I can remember so far. Gonna be who can score last or who can avoid a couple of turnovers.

Funny how much quieter it gets around here when the score became competitive and how much busier it'll probably get if the Saints pull ahead in the second half.
But while the game is tight and good plays being made, crickets. Do that many enjoy ripping games/players that much more than enjoying what, to this point, has been a pretty well played game? Or is there just that few watching the game?

I'm watching the game, but don't have much to say. I'm hoping Seattle wins and eliminates the Saints, so happy that right now they are winning. I'm not a Seattle fan or anything though, so it honestly doesn't matter too much to me if one wins or the other though.

You know it's possible to have a computer and a TV in the same room right?
It hasn't been a well played game, at least defensively. There were just four Saints players covering a 30 yard patch of grass while Stokely ran right past them, including the aforementioned Harper who is just having a nightmare. I'm sorry a discussion on a messageboard has offended your delicate sensibilities so much though

Saturday afternoon is a weird time for the NFL and it's the poorest game of the 4 (at least perception wise). I wouldn't mind seeing Seattle win since there is a chance they'd get to play the Bears next week.

Not offended, just a commentary. Read the start of this thread and you can look at the time stamps. Prior to the game there was a lot of commentary (radio, online, other threads here) how bad Seattle would get thumped. Game starts, the Saints take the lead, Hasselbeck throws the interception, Seattle goes down by 10 a second time and there's chatter.
Seattle comes back, ties up and takes the lead and the thread is pretty much dead.
I just find it interesting that there's more commentary when the early indications show that this might be a thumping, but once it turns into a pretty competitive back and forth game (which one would think would be a better game to watch even if a bit sloppy as you suggest), that's when it got a lot quieter here, hence my observation/comment.

That'd be an interesting lead in given that the Seahawks were able to win already in Chicago this year already. My gf asked me today what the Seahawks chances were today (she's not into football really) and I told her that on their best day they can play with nearly any team in the league but that it'd surprise me if they had the consistency to be able to do so long enough to get deep into the playoffs. That said, if they can get through today, gain some confidence and go into a place they've already won without getting over confident, it'd make for a heck of a game.
I hope ;)

OK, point taken. FWIW I don't think there was ever a chance the Seahawks were going to get thumped. New Orleans just isn't close to the same team they were last year and at Qwest anything can happen. But even I'm surprised at just how bad the Saints look defensively. Losing Malcolm Jenkins hurts a lot, their safety play has been horrific but still. Where did all the blitzing and the aggressive front seven go?

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if part of it was the Saints not wanting to tip too much of their game plan going forward (maybe some over confidence in what it would take to beat the Seahawks) combined with the Jekyl/Hyde nature of Hasselbeck this year so far. May have figured they wouldn't need to get that creative defensively to get a couple of turnovers and let the offense win the game. Guessing we'll see more of the pressure packages out of them starting in the second half. Also doesn't hurt that Seattle has used some quick hitters to try and dissuade the Saints from bringing too much pressure.
It's going to be an interesting second half as what I really fear is that the Seahawks continue to not get a lot of pressure on Brees and he goes off. The Seattle D needs to figure out a way to make him get out of his comfort zone and get some hits on him or else this lead could be really short lived.

When the commish got interviewed some time ago about the playoffs he mentioned how people have talked about changing the seedings. He never mentioned changing the fact that regardless if you win your division you are in. In other words, Seattle would still be in if a possible rule change would happen. The only difference is that they would be the #6 seed. Only the Pats are the one team I feel remotely comfortable in saying they would win a game. The NFC is a complete roll of the dice. N.O. is good enough to blow them out, but it's a Saints team that has struggled a lot as well.

Fitting end to a wacky game right there. Grats to the Seahawks who deserved to win.
For a guy who is the chic pick to take a head coaching job I thought Gregg Williams laid a giant egg today. Late on when the Saints needed to blitz they looked like the defense that shut down Manning and Favre again, but for most of the game it was just vanilla, sit back and let Hasselbeck pick you apart.

Statistically, they got their ass kicked today and looked great in the fourth against the pass when they started blitzing again. Maybe a valid reason why the gameplan started out as that, but you have to adjust when your guys are just getting picked apart.
No disrespect intended towards the Seahawks but if you are the next great defensive mind you can't give up close to 300 yards passing to that offense in the playoffs.

It is not. It is the fact that every talking head on radio this week said that the division round is "reseeded." That would suggest to me that the current seeding is reshuffled, but it appears that it doesn't. Why say "reseed" if the seeding is the same?

If Packers win they would play Atlanta and Chicago plays Seattle. If Philly wins, they play Chicago and Atlanta plays Seattle.

Then that's a horrible way to diagram it. They clearly show the NO/Seattle winner going to Atlanta and the GB/Philly winner going to Chicago.Yeah, I agree, it's confusing. The diagram works out well if the 3rd seeds in both the 3 vs 6 games win. But if one of the 3s doesn't win, the diagram for that conference will be out of whack or needs some fixing.

It is not. It is the fact that every talking head on radio this week said that the division round is "reseeded." That would suggest to me that the current seeding is reshuffled, but it appears that it doesn't. Why say "reseed" if the seeding is the same?
I don't know. I was wondering why that term has been getting tossed around myself.
Unless there was an obscure rule change that was not announced to the vast majority of us and has no apparent Internet documentation, the seeding remains the same as it always had.

I think what they mean by reseeding is that the best team plays the lowest seed remaining. Not sure why they call that reseeding but that is what I always assumed they were talking about. (Basically the point is that #4 vs #5 doesn't automatically go to Atlanta)

agreed, that was really cool :) the only thing that could have made this game by Hasselbeck any better would be that it a) were the super bowl and not the wildcard-game or b) heŽd scored the game winning TD on a run by himself.
One of the most inspiring performances iŽve seen in any sport recently, especially considering the circumstances.
The guy was injured, then didnŽt know for a while if heŽd start, then gets intercepted on one of his first plays (not his fault, but still) and then makes one great throw after the other and after quite a few terrible plays by his receivers makes a huge throw and then finally gets a break with that run.
For some reason he was one of those guys i allways seemed to pull for when i happened to watch the Seahawks over the years, maybe because he allways seemed so "normal" with relatively (!) little natural talent.

I'm completely stumped at how Sanchez continually avoids major criticism from announcers or Rex Ryan.
Ryan tells the sideline reporter that Peyton Manning couldn't have thrown under the pressure Sanchez has been under.
Are you kidding me? I'm not going to say he hasn't been under pressure, but he's been terrible today. There was no pressure at all on the INT at the end of the half. He can't throw a 3 yard out with any degree of accuracy. He makes one good throw every three passes and people want to continue to lay blame elsewhere.
If it wasn't for the Jets defense and his ground game, he would be Alex freakin Smith,

Manning had a 108.7 QB rating for the game. I think it's kind of hard to really point blame at him considering it was the Colts D that gave up the game winning drive and gave up 169 yards rushing. The Colts themselves had a mere 3.4 yards per carry as well so it's not like they were helping Manning. This isn't a vintage Colts team either. Even with getting some players back, they still are rather banged up. The Colts offensive isn't exactly been known for being innovative. It's been beaten around the bush that the Colts run a rather vanilla offense. See the Saints defensive game plan that had them changing up how they attacked the offense and how it eventually got to Manning.
The last few years are continuing to show that the idea of homefield advantage in the playoffs is not nearly as big of a deal as people think it is.
Seattle might not win if they were on the road. I don't think it was surprising at all for the Jets to win. However, the Sports Guy has covered the issue of the newer stadiums lacking home field advantage and the Colts are one good example of a team that has a harder time now playing at home.

In the 2010 regular season the home teams went 143-113 for winning 55.9% of the time. Home field advantage usually is around that 5/9th mark, so that sounds like the 2010 regular season has been right on par. With 256 games, that's a decent enough sample size (I think) to say that everything appears to be the same old.
For the playoffs, I tracked back through the first season with 12 teams in the playoffs (1989 regular season) and since then the home teams went 142-68 for winning 67.6% of the time. But I think that puts apples and oranges in the same basket, as the league format changed per the 2002 regular season from 6 to 8 divisions (ignoring other factors for a bit) and it shows as half of the 5th seeds since 2002 had a better record than the 4th seed they faced (before 2002 the 4th seed always was a wild card team with an equal or better record than the 5th seed).
If we're only tracking playoff games through the 2002/2003 season, we'll see a 48-32 record for the home teams (that's 60.0%). In 59 games the home team had a better regular season record, in 12 games those records were the same and in 9 games the road team had a better record. I think looking any deeper will be tricky, due to sample size issues. 80 games is small enough as it is, but that's all that there is to measure.

Two things still but me about the second to last play in last night's game (seeing the replays and it still bugs me).
First, poorly missed offensive pass interference call on that play. He shoves the defender out of the picture to get open.
Second, the clock should have stopped. It was a catch as his feet/ knees came down in bounds but then hit upper body lands out of bounds, hence he is out of bounds and the clock should stop. It doesn't matter that he feet and knees were in bounds at that point as he was not touched so the play was not over when his knee came down, it should have been over when he hit out of bounds (hence the clock should have stopped).
The second issues means they need to either run another play (and as we know anything can still happen) or kick with enough time left to give the Colts possibly a couple plays.

Exactly. Yes, I'm a Colts fan, but you can't blame that game on Manning at all. He did everything you needed him to do considering the Jets didn't blitz much but fell back into coverage to stop the pass. The only fault with the passing game was the reluctance to pass to Wayne (He was livid post-game) because I think the slant route and drag route he is good at was there last night.
Manning was on target. Trouble was, offensively, that the Jets dared the Colts to run. They were decent, but not as dominating as they had been in the last few weeks. Overall, though, the offense did enough to win the game. No Clark, Collie, Diem, and basically a non-factor Wayne...yeah, they did enough.
Special Teams lost this game followed closely by the defense. If the Colts field that last kick inside at least the 30, they win. Sanchez wasn't going to bring them back.
I had no illusions this year's Colts team was going anywhere. 18 guys ended up on IR including the starting TE, best slot receiver, projected starting wideout, both starting corners, both starting outside linebackers, 2 safeties, and then going into the game they scratched the starting RT and DT. They weren't going anywhere.
But they should have won that game. Damn ST and Defense.
Now, observation about the Jets. Defensively they are solid, but the Pats may find some areas to exploit. The Colts passed the ball well targeting just 3 receivers (Garcon, Tamme, and White). The Pats will have a lot more to throw at them.
Offensively, they looked great in the 2nd half and Ryan needs to do the same thing in New England. Pound it and hope the game doesn't fall into the hands of Sanchez. He looked horrible in the first half and only settled down when the run game took some pressure off.

As a Packers fan, I am contractually obligated to remind everyone that the Pack also held a 14-0 lead against the Eagles in the infamous 4th & 26 game from 2004.

Vick must have spent a lot of time watching soccer this summer.

You can almost hear him getting fatter.
You should see his press conferences. The guy can't say more than 2 words before inhaling or exhaling heavily.

Lucky break for the Eagles there, with that drop.

Yeah, that was brutal. Packers receivers have now taken at least 10 points off the board today with drops.

NFL coaches are so dumb.
You go for it there. You need a yard. Best case scenario if you kick it is you still need 2 yards later for a 2 point conversion to tie it up with much less space to operate.

Green Bay: "Here Eagles, get back in the game."
Eagles: "nah, I have a golf game scheduled next week."

If the Packers run Kuhn up the gut on 3rd & 1 again this postseason I will kick the nearest puppy. Do you hear me, McCarthy? A PUPPY.
Completely predictable.

I can't believe Reid wasted that timeout. On 3rd down, how do you not already plan what you're gonna do if Vick doesn't make it?

If this ball is within a mile of Desean Jackson, the punter should never be allowed in the NFL again.

I think everyone has overrated Vick this season. He had one amazing game but IMO is basically the same QB he was when he got locked up.
If I am the Eagles I proceed with caution.
