I meant to do the writeup after week 4 but I guess I'll have to settle for one day before week 6

Midseason writeups are here :)

So, we're "halfway" through the season at 9 weeks. That means there are 5 weeks left to go in the regular season and then 2 playoff weeks with the top 4 teams so I guess last week would have technically been halfway. Every team is active so that's good news. This league's always a bit of a tough nut to crack in terms of results and it's almost always close. Looking at the scores, I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing and I've been philosophically kicking this around for a couple of years now. Too much talent in the pool so no one starves? Too much balance in the scoring (is such a thing even possible?). Or is it just a seasonal evening-out effect. Looking at individual games, no team has played more than 3 games that have been decided by 10 points or less so from week to week the games aren't all that closed. So, all that aside, lets start our tour of the league at the bottom this time.

The Dick Butkuses are 2-7 and the only team with under 1300 points in the league at 1194. It's a bit perplexing as the team has a decent base with Phillip Rivers and Greg Jennings, two of the top 25 players in the league. But Stephen Jackson has underwhelmed and RB2 and QB2 have been a bit of a revolving door. They have also played the second hardest schedule by a whisker, tho 2/3/4th hardest schedules have 1463, 1462, 1460 points against.

Road Kill Cafe started out very strong with a 2-1 record and averaging nearly 200 points per game. However, they've gone into a tailspin, losing 6 straight and never scoring more than 150. It's probably no coincidence that Andre Johnson and Darren McFadden went from awesome to hurt over the same period. It's probably also no coincidence then that they lead the league with 39 roster moves. They have also played the toughest schedule with 1525 points against. For a bright spot, they have the best TE combo in the league with Jason Whitten (#3) and Jermichael Finley (#6).

Speaking of TEs, Eleven Masked Men has Jimmy Graham who is far and away the best player at his position this year with 156 points to the second highest total of 132 (Gronkowski) and only a handful of TEs have over 100 points. Unfortunately, when you're leading off team highlights with TEs, that might be a bad sign. Well, that's not entirely fair. Schaub and Roethlisberger have been pretty good at QB and Arian Foster has been excellent since getting healthy. It's no coincidence the team started 0-4 while Foster was out the first three weeks but have gone 3-2 in the last 5 weeks. It's a deep hole to start out 0-4. Is there time to make it up?

Rafini Express- Drew Brees in Round 1, Chris Johnson in Round 2, and Peyton Manning in Round 3. Well, 1 out of 3 isn't bad. I think we could pretty much sum up a lot of the team right there but that's not fair for what is typically one of the strongest teams in the league. They've still cobbled together good QB play with Ryan Fitzpatrick and Mike Wallace along with 3 more WRs with 87+ points should help (Bryant, Washington, Branch). But the RB situation is just ugly- Greene, Johnson, Bradshaw, Battle, and more. If there's a way to get some consistent RB play, it's a dangerous team but that's an uphill climb.

Hawai'i-Vegas Ha'a lead the league in defense and special teams with kickers #2 and #3 in Rackers and Cundiff and 2 top 5 defenses in the Jets and Bengals(huh?). Put that with Tom Brady, Matt Forte, and a Maurice Jones-Drew/Mike Tolbert combo and you have a winning team, right? Well, unfortunately, not quite. Joe Flacco has struggled some at QB and the WR situation is not good in Hawaii. Eric Decker is the top scoring WR and that's with 101 points. With 5 other WRs between 75 and 90 points (not bad totals, mind you), it can make WR scoring very inconsistent from week to week.

Tasty Punts have had the easiest schedule in the league and one of only two teams with under 1300 points against. Eli Manning is at QB with three 100 point WRs (Marshall, Green, White). Ray Rice and Fred Jackson are at RB with DeMarco Murray as a backup. A pair of top 10 kickers and defenses shore up the points down the scoreboard. Times are good, right? Well, I forgot to mention QB2, which is currently manned by Carson Palmer and Blaine Gabbert. Oof. Well, there's still time to patch that up and even with the easy schedule, they have 3 losses by around 15 points each, wnich is as close as we seem to get in this league. They could be very dangerous if they get into the playoffs and catch fire with a QB2.

Dayton Dynamo is the top scoring team in the league and the only team over 1500 points. While most teams in the league tend to dominate with QBs, and they have a good one with Matthew Stafford, they have overcome their QB2 woes (Andy Dalton? Christian Ponder? Tavaris Jackson?!?) with a two Top 20 scoring RBs in LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles and 4 WRs with over 87 points.

Royals Apes are led by the one-two QB punch of Aaron Rogers and (?!?) Cam Newton, who are 1 and 3 in the league in scoring. The rest of the team is no slouches either with 3 RBs near or above 100 points (Gore, Wells, Matthews) and 4 WRs at 80 or above. It's a very balanced team that is second in the league in scoring and is a 2 point loss last week away from being ranked #1.

Team Victory is second in the league with 28 roster moves but they are sitting pretty in 2nd place with a 7-2 record. The RB spot has been a bit of a mess with injuries (Best, Hillis) and committee backs (Green-Ellis, Thomas) but Mike Vick has retained his form from last season and the team has 6 other players with over 100 points (QB Freeman, TE Davis, WRs Fitzgerald, VJackson, Cruz, and SJohnson).

The Indianapolis Iguanii sit atop the league at 7-2. While the draft strategy of Romo and Ryan in early rounds to lock up QB has been underwhelming, WR and RB play has more than made up for it with all starters at 100+ points (Welker, Smith, Garcon, Peterson, Turner) and Marques Colston right behind at 92. They are the second highest scoring team in the league but have also had the fortune of the 3rd least points against.

I don't know who cut Darren Sproles in like Week 2, but I thank you 1,000 times. I lost Jamaal Charles around then, and would probably be totally screwed without him.

Andy Dalton has been a decently solid QB2, once I wised up and cut Donovan McNabb. I'm basically down to playing QB v. defense matchups with the rotating cast of characters you listed.

Look at the bright side: If they hooked up like they did in week 1, LeSean McCoy fumbled 5 times, and Dayton stopped scoring for the rest of the games that are still live- you'd win!

I don't quite get keeping Mark Ingram over getting one more player, but I suppose the RB pool is getting pretty depleted with injuries.

You still have an outside chance with Bowe and Battle going tonight. I'm certainly not ready to call it a win yet in my book.

I figured with Stafford throwing 2 picks in the first quarter, that I was screwed. But he made a nice recovery. Then when I saw Fasano catch a TD pass, and Anquan Boldin score on the only catch he made, I figured I was having a pretty good week. Checking later last night, I was right.

With Minnesota getting behind and needing to play catch up, that gave Ponder a good week as well out of QB2. I think Decker not scoring at all on Thursday night was a killer for you.

I've been lucky.

2nd highest scoring team in the league - ok, but I've had the fewest points in the league scored against me.

Points allowed has a higher correlation percentage to wins in the league than points scored.

Special points should be given to Rafini who has a mere 0.10 points difference between scored and allowed. Freaky.

Apes are in. Tasty Punts are probably in since they have a huge lead in points. Indianapolis Iguanii and Team Victory are in with wins. However, with losses, both are possibly passed by Rafini Express. Only 15 points separate the Iguanii and Victory so it's possible either could make the playoffs depending on what the other does.

What a horrible night. GL SI.

That was completely unexpected. I mean, 0.08?? I was sitting there, going into the game last night thinking "You know, why did I play AP over Benson. Yes, he's twice the runner but Minnesota is going to rest him and Benson had a good matchup and if only I had those 8 additional points, I'd have a chance." I still don't know how Pittsburgh managed no sacks, ints, or anything.

I was watching the games all day Sunday thinking "If I have about a 50 point lead going into Sunday night, I have a chance" since you still had Rice, Dickson, and Pittsburgh left. I only went in with like a 32 point lead and when Dickson caught that TD, I figured I was sunk since Rice would get his. They did their job and with only a 3 point lead and Pittsburgh, I figured I was done for.

Thanks for the great game and you got screwed there.

Eli and T.J. Yates sucking equally bad really hurt us too.. We didn't get the equivalent of one quality start with both of them combined, and that should have sunk me by itself. I was amazed and lucky to be within striking distance when Monday night rolled around and also figured one sack and that should do it.. We squeaked into the lead late, but on the last punt return where Brown ran probably 10-15 yrds backwards, we lost our slim lead.. I have never been so mad at a single player.

Good luck in the title game.

Thanks SI. Glad to bring a championship to KC somehow. I really didn't want 2 straight years of 2nd place finishes.

I like the idea of a flex spot - especially if we can allow use of RB, WR or TE in that spot.

Do we need to lessen the importance of the QB position at all?

We've had a couple of historic seasons this year that are an outlier so the record-breakers put up 413, 377, and 354 with Newton and Stafford at 366 and 320 but then you jump down to 271 and the 20th best is 160 (which starts in this league). RB starters are 320 to 167 for 1-20 so that's about the same range if you take out that there might be 3x 5000 yard seasons. WR starters are 1-30 which has the range of 311-156. All in all, seems fairly balanced on the main starting front with 30/10/8 yardage and 5/6/6 TDs.

I wish there was a way to wipe out fractions of points. And I'm wondering if I should add in point bonuses for 100 and 300 yard games, etc.

Using my team, I used 2nd and 3rd round picks and had the 6 and 7 QB. They were good for a lot of points but it was because I had two RBs that performed at their position Peterson (when healthy) and Turner with a number of WRs that outperformed their draft position (Welker, Smith, and Colston were all top 16 WRs despite being 5th, 7th, and 10th round picks). Those were more responsible for the good play of my team than the QBs. Drafting the 6th and 7th best QB as the 6th and 9th QB really didn't improve my team's lot just by virtue that I locked in good QBs early- and the fall would have been much more debilitating if I had drafted, say, Schaub and Freeman, which were drafted around the same picks.

I still am at a loss as to what to do with TE, K, and DEF. An elite TE like Gronkowski or Graham can really unbalance things and give a huge edge to the team they are on. And, on the other side, K and DEF just seem like such a crapshoot- projected and actual rankings have very little to do with each other. It feels like the randomness of closers in baseball and with even more variability.

I'm not really keen on folding TEs into WRs because it seems like so few TEs have useful production so we'd only draft a few TEs. Maybe that's not necessarily a bad thing. Then again, that does balance out the unbalance of the TE position by mixing them in with WRs. You have to consider that it does increase the WR/TE pool a lot, tho- so we might even have 5 WR/TE or another flex to balance out RB and QB rarity and production.

DEF and K are a tougher nut to crack. I really don't like IDP- it's really hard to make a balanced setup with IDP and balance it out with the rest of the league. K and D are simpler in that there are 32 available, you draft 20, so there is scarcity but not extreme scarcity- it's the level I look to maintain. The problem I have more with is scoring. I can't find a way to delineate good from bad. I've tried to bump up points on long FGs and subtract points for misses but K and D seem as much about opportunity and matchup than about actually ability and skill.

That is why I think 1 DEF makes more sense than 2. (and I guess Kickers if you want to keep them). If everybody only has to start 1, it gives everybody the ability to play match-ups more.

With limiting it to 1 instead of 2, wouldn't that pretty much guarantee Ks and DEFs for the last 2 rounds which means draft order means everything. As is now, 13 picks in the last 4 rounds were non-K or DEF. There's some room to make market inefficiency with the number picked and it makes a team like, say, Seattle or a kicker like Kasay who ended with good results worth something either on the WW or a defense like Baltimore or Chicago rewards a player who picks them a bit earlier.

If we gave K's more points for XPs (Same amount as FGs?) and defenses points for yardage allowed, then I think the quality of each would make more of a difference. The top defenses would be better that way, because they consistently make yards hard to come by, even if the opponent sometimes lucks into several good situations due to the offense turning the ball over in bad places.

Eh. I'd argue that the Defenses and Kickers should have been the last to go this year as well. Certainly the 2nd Defense and Kickers at minimum.

Draft order doesn't matter when there isn't much difference between the choices anyway.

We could certainly look at adjusting the points for the Defenses and Kickers. I think it would help tweak the value of the Defenses especially.

FWIW, I still think the scoring system, as it stands, is better than 95% of the leagues out there.

Oh, I know, we're working on window dressing. But I'm always looking to improve :)

The goal is to make the draft matter a bit on those positions. I'm not expecting the top defenses or kickers to be picked in the first few rounds. However, I do want there to be a reward for a team who can pick their K or D before their 3rd WR or Flex, rewarding the team for better use of sleepers or those teams who can make a good guess at an improving defense.

I think we should do the following offensive positions for next year:
QB
QB
RB
RB
WR
WR
WR
TE
WR/TE
RB/WR/TE

A lot of 4th WRs are better than starting TEs. Tho I kindof want to reward those teams who spend a high draft pick on a Tony Gonzalez (in the past) or other elite TEs. However, it's really rare to have 2 high TEs.

I think I'll look at the K and DEF at the end of the season or start of next season and see what we can do. I don't think I'd make XPs same as FGs as there's a degree of difficulty there but I can increase the spread, hopefully.

Hm... looks like September 5th is the first day this season and I'll be out of town over Labor Day so you're probably right. Time to get a move on for this season
