Twilight Struggle is a great implementation of the board game, worth it if you have someone to play against but not if you're looking to play against AI.

We'll have to play sometime. The AI is ridiculously easy for someone who has played a bit. But other than the AI (which I can't even imagine trying to get right) I agree, they did a terrific job with this game.

There are a few other issues, my friend was playing solo to brush up on the rules and won when the AI kept a scoring card. Though he did later lose to me when he performed a coup in a battleground area at DEFCON 3 with an event card that lowered DEFCON again to 1, so maybe it's just aiming for realistic play there.

Bought some games today.

Sunless Sea
Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance
Cities: Skylines
Sid Meiers Pirates

Pretty happy with what I got.

I should be good for awhile. Or until i find the next game I want.

I would love to play FM2016. But I just dont understand the whole euro football economics. Very confusing to me.

So I picked up:

CK2 for $9.99 plus selected DLC of a consensus top 10 available... I didn't get the "Collection" package, since it was missing 2 or 3 seemingly important DLC. And I didn't care for some of the other fluff that was thrown in.

Sunless Sea, based on what has been discussed here so far.

I have not played those games. I like OTC, but it's a quick playthrough. Post-tutorial, you can play through a game in an hour or 90 minutes. The different groups you play as change your strategy considerably. It's very playable within that framework.

Stardew Valley is pretty great. I don't know Rune Factory, but I played the hell out of Stardew Valley when I first got it. Put it down after about 60-ish hours and haven't picked it back up, but definitely got my money's worth.

Agreed on Stardew Valley. Almost the same amount of hours too before I put it down. It hooked me like unlike any other game has in a bit. I think once you get to the hours we put in you start to have a lot of money and you run out of stuff to do a little bit. That said, the creator is great about adding stuff and supposedly will be adding a lot of late game content and other fixes. I highly recommend it.

Maybe Because I am bored... my favorite games in my Steam library from A to Z ("The" will be ignored if the first word in a title)... I also added a # entry.

# - 80 Days; great fun
A - Asolute Drift; fun little game to play
B - Blood Bowl: Lengendary Edition; haven't played in a while but liked it better than Blood Bowl 2
C - CS:GO; Cities: Skylines is a close second but this tends to be my go to time waster
D - Defense Grid: The Awakening; just a great game and this was a tough letter with Dungeon Siege, Dragon Age and Don Bradman Cricket to compete with
E - Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim; eith EHM and Euro Trick Sim 2 getting considerations
F - FOF7; this is the group of death with several FM versions, Fallout 4, FTL and Frozen Cortex to choose from
G - GTA V; Gal Civ 2 and GRID make me think about this one but GTA V is just a wonderfule game
H - Half Life 2; have to go "old school" with this one, just such a great game
I - Not a lot of choices for me here but will go with IL-2 1946
J - Another slim list to choose from so I will go with Just Cause 2 even though I haven't played it much
K - Kerbal Space Program hands down in a small field
L - Left 4 Dead 2; a close choice with LIMBO and Life is Strange being good games as well but went for adrenalyn
M - Mass Effect; this was tough with Mafia 2 and Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor as competition
N - NBA 2K14; easy choice in this letter
O - OOTP 17 wins a close one over Orcs Must Die!
P - Portal 2; with Papers Please getting a good look
Q - Qvadriga; my only Q game, only short play time but it seems like it may be fun
R - Rocket League, though I sucks at it; Rock of Ages is also a fun game
S - Sid Myers Civ 5; Stardew Valley, Solar 2 and Silent Hunter 3 make this a tough choice
T - Tomb Rider; enjoyed that game a lot but Ticket to Ride gets a lot of family play time
U - Universal Sandbox; could be overtaken by the second version but haven't had enough time with it yet
V - Verdun; this was an easy choice
W - The Witcher 3; Walking Dead and Wasteland 2 were close to being chosen
X - XCOM: Enemy Unknown; hands down in this letter
Y - You Don't Know Jack; my only Y game
Z - Zuma's Revenge; only 2 to choose from so this one wins

I'm upset because there is nothing fun about these sales. I like fun, I like excitement, and the old sales used to bring that. Each day at noon everyone at work would hit steam to see the sales, yak about them for a few minutes, get each other worked up about one game or another. Friends would send emails "hey did you see Game X is on sale today? Blah blah blah". It was fun.

Did I just save myself $25-30 dollars? Sure. But I would gladly trade that cash for 10 days of fun (oh yeah plus actually the games themselves).

I'm not much of a gamer so I'm not going to scroll through hundreds of games I've never heard of looking for a deal. But I do love the wish list feature - I just put a few things on there, and Steam emails me when they're on sale. When a game I've been vaguely interested in for years is on sale for $2.99, I'll jump in and buy it and give it a shot. My gaming interests tend to be outdated by at least 5 years, it's great to be able to spend so little.

Just bought Order of Battle: Pacific. I've only gone through some of the tutorial so far, but it was a "Panzer Corp" feel to it. It has two DLC out too. The main game, from the looks of it, covers the naval battles, 1st DLC is about Japan's land war in China and the 2nd DLC is about the US Marines and their fight to take the islands. Looks really promising so far.

Order of Battle is now "free to play" which has the "boot camp" scenarios to let you get comfortable with the game (tutorial). Then you can play the first scenario of each DLC and purchase each DLC as you choose.

Thoroughly enjoying it thus far. I'm trying to decide on the first DLC to buy and I'm leaning on the US Marines since that was my branch of service.

Gears of War dev on Steam & Windows:

"Slowly, over the next five years, they will force-patch Windows 10 to make Steam progressively worse and more broken. They'll never completely break it, but will continue to break it until, in five years, people are so fed up that Steam is buggy that the Windows Store seem like an ideal alternative. That's exactly what they did to their previous competitors in other areas. Now they're doing it to Steam. It's only just starting to become visible. Microsoft might not be competent enough to succeed with their plan but they are certainly trying," Sweeney said. He adds the outcome of this would be forcing every app and game to be sold through the Windows Store alone. "If they can succeed in doing that then it's a small leap to forcing all apps and games to be distributed through the Windows store. Once we reach that point, the PC has become a closed platform. It won't be that one day they flip a switch that will break your Steam library -- what they're trying to do is a series of sneaky manoeuvres. They make it more and more inconvenient to use the old apps, and, simultaneously, they try to become the only source for the new ones," he claims.

I'd think he was being paranoid if not having seen the same thing taking place in all the other digital markets too over the past however many years. Serious potential here for Microsoft to hurt Windows' market share rather than boost their profits, IMO.

I know I'm going to blow money on Civ, but I got a notice that Starters Order's 6 is on sale on steam. I know we have a few horseracing people here, anyone have that one?I picked it up because of the sale. To me, it's essentially the same game as SO4 (I didn't get 5) with nicer graphics. (Go to the SO forums and get the Start It US mod.) The UI is still clunky to me, and the game flavour :p is still UK due to its roots (head lad, stone, distances not in furlongs, etc.). There are some notable improvements like sex-specific horse names, more silks, transport costs, and some other things. I haven't gotten to the breeding part, but if it's like previous versions, it's not that sophisticated. From what I understand from path12 and possibly QuikSand, The Racing Breed did a better job of that. The game has multiple resolutions, but doesn't seem to scale text size as well as I would like. Using my monitor's native 1920x1080 rez the text is too small for my eyes, imo. I wind up using 1280x720 to keep the 16:9 ratio and it's ok but not ideal. I might try changing the DPI, but that probably will make things worse and not worth the effort.

There are some bugs, so save early, save often. I wouldn't pay full price, but I'm sure that I will get my $22 worth.

I have such a backlog too.. but I watched the twitch stream and it's really pegged my hype needle. :)

Tyranny's take on evil isn't just nuanced, it's disturbing | PCGamesN (http://www.pcgamesn.com/tyranny/tyranny-evil-gameplay) (may contain spoilers)

When our moral compass points to absolutes, we're forced to make decisions that can negatively impact not just our own lives but the lives of the people around us. But at what point does that pressure begin to bend the compass needle? Even though I can't wait to play more, Tyranny's take on evil troubles me because it mirrors reality alarmingly well. When you sit down to play a fantasy RPG, the last thing you expect is to be reminded of the issues plaguing the real world. In that sense, Tyranny might just end up being the most politically relevant game of this year. Not because it has an agenda to push but because it has a disturbing understanding of the concessions we're willing to make when standing up for what's right demands sacrifices. Like a beloved relative spouting racial slurs while we quietly avert our eyes and say nothing, doing the right thing in Tyranny is complicated.

Does anyone here use an Arris SBG6782-AC modem/router? If so and you can get to Steam with a Firewall Protection Level of "High", what Port Forwarding and/or Port Trigger settings do you use?

No matter what values I put in (based on everything I have found on the Internet), I cannot connect with Steam. However, I can connect if I change the Protection Level to "Low", which I don't want to do for any significant period of time (only to update Steam or my Steam games).

I'm tired of playing all my Steam games offline. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried the Medium setting?

People might disagree but I don't think there is a big issue with leaving it on Low if this is just for home use. If your OS is updated and you're running something like MalwareBytes, you're going to be fine. I'm reading through the firewall settings right now and it just seems like massive overkill for a home.

I just tried Medium, and it doesn't work either -- just Low and Off (obviously).

I'm thinking there must be something obvious that I'm missing. I know I had to make some changes to my old Motorola modem/router (replaced by this Arris one 2 years ago) to get it to work with Steam, but, unfortunately, I didn't write down what I did at the time.

On Tyranny, I'm having a lot of fun with it. I've lost twice(using an admittedly somewhat difficult setup, at least for early game/combat, on Hard/Expert Mode/Trial of Iron). I think the writing is pretty strong for the most part that I've seen, and that's important for me.

FWIW though, Paradox forums are filled right now with Pillars of Eternity people(admittedly I didn't play that, though I've heard it's good) getting their fanboi exercised with all manner of 'was this even playtested' and 'it's too short' and 'stuff that's worse than PoE', etc.

I think they are missing an interesting game, but maybe I'll feel differently once I've completed a playthrough.

2k is a bit of an asshole recently. They got Steam to pull from their store two solid, playable, but minor casual strategy games called Pre-Civilization Egypt and Pre-Civilization Marble Age. take Egypt, for example, which is a fun game I played through in a few hours, and runs from 5000 bc to 3000 bc, and doesn't have any mechanics in the "Civ" or "Civ-clone" genre. The same is true of Pre-Civ Marble Age as well.

And yet, 2k made this claim, that they infringe on their core "Civilization" brand, despite the fact that they have not copyrighted Pre-Civilization, and there are many other games on Steam, like Galactic Civilizations, which 2k has not gone after and are still there. So why go after the small-time indie company?

And of course, how do you resolve it? You have to resolve it, independently, with the company who made the claim. Then they have to both agree to a settlement, and contact Valve in order to get it taken care of. So unless 2k Games decides to back off somehow, this is not going away. And its like a little two person indie studio can threaten legal ramifications for going after a larger company like 2k.

You can check out the Cease and Desist stuff online. Looks like 2k went after them on Google Apps, but they were restored there.

I get the need to protect your IP. But I feel like this was a bit too far.

I would agree with this. Both serve different purposes and both are very well done in their genre. I like Grim Dawn for quick, mindless gaming sessions, where I just want constant action. DOS is very old school and I like playing that when I have some time set aside and don't mind thinking as it is much more deliberate. The turn based combat in DOS is very well done as well.

Quite a lot of words: I've been doing ok taking half my guys and equipping them with a militia spear and shield, forming them into a line and choosing "spearwall" whenever an enemy comes close enough for them (the enemy) to charge next turn. The other half hide behind and to the flanks of the line and rush forward with sword or axe when the spearwall has worn the enemy down, or when the line dont have enough energy to spearwall anymore. Battle Brothers is a lot of fun - been a while since I played it but having a good wall with good equipment is key - also mix up your weapons, some spears, maces, axes. You can and will get guys killed on bad rolls, so expect to replace them. One thing I learned is just because your guy has a lot of levels, if he started as a fisherman or beggar, doesn't mean he will be as good as a lower level mercenary type - they are super expensive to recruit but are really good.

Anybody pick up The Long Dark?

Looks real interesting.

I've had it since it launched into early access. It's a fun sandbox survival game at the moment. Story mode is getting close to completion which will initially add about 6 hours of "campaign" gameplay for the 1st playable character and then another story will be launched for the other playable character further down the line.

If you're looking for a survival game where it feels like you're actually struggling to survive it's a great game. When I initially purchased the game there were only 2 maps and they were relatively easy after playing them a couple times. Now there are several maps with much higher difficulties which gives a lot more variety in gameplay.

For $10 you could do much worse, but if you want a storyline right now then it may be best to hold off.

Master of Orion - Conquer the Stars just might be my game of the year. Since the latest patch and DLC, the game is one of the best 4x games I've played in a long time.

So what makes the game your GotY? I was thinking of getting it at launch but was chased off by the mediocre reviews. Did they do something to address the complaints?

Don't know, just saying its possible and other sites are also reporting it, but basically using the same tweet as the main evidence. Typically companies won't formally announce when they have been attached, so I am not surprised if it did happen that Steam didn't make any kind of formal announcement. If I recall correctly, didn't steam have an issue during last year's sale when something went wrong with cache and we were able to see other people's account information? Obviously, xmas time hasn't been kind to them they last couple of years:)

Regardless, back up now for all of us to spend our money:)

I'm seeing more variation in prices on stuff this year. Last year what you saw is what you got. This year, prices seem to be fluctuating a little bit. For example, FM17 wasn't on sale until today.

It's also possible that they only had a limited number of keys to sell at $20, but not it's up higher. I have a feeling it'll come back down to $20 before the end of the sale.

My favorites from the last couple years:
Kathy Rain (http://store.steampowered.com/app/370910/)
Oxenfree (http://store.steampowered.com/app/388880/)
Contradiction: Spot the Liar (http://store.steampowered.com/app/373390/)

Valiant Hearts: The Great War (http://store.steampowered.com/app/260230/)
Nelson Tethers Puzzle Agent (http://store.steampowered.com/app/31270/)

Others by designers of the games you mentioned:
Gray Matter (http://store.steampowered.com/app/260570/)
Broken Age (http://store.steampowered.com/app/232790/)

Classic style games I've been meaning to play:
Wadjet Eye Games (http://store.steampowered.com/search/?publisher=Wadjet%20Eye%20Games)
Broken Sword 5 - the Serpent's Curse (http://store.steampowered.com/app/262940/)
Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure (http://store.steampowered.com/app/261510/)

Non traditional adventure games to check out:
D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die (http://store.steampowered.com/app/358090/)
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (http://store.steampowered.com/app/413410/) & Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (http://store.steampowered.com/app/413420/)
VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action (http://store.steampowered.com/app/447530/)
Firewatch (http://store.steampowered.com/app/383870/)
SOMA (http://store.steampowered.com/app/282140/)
Telltale Episodic Adventure Games (http://store.steampowered.com/search/?publisher=Telltale%20Games) - These are focused on story and have very little in the way of puzzles, but if your looking for adventure games like that Tales From The Borderlands, The Wolf Among Us, Walking Dead and Batman are worth playing.
Life is Strange (http://store.steampowered.com/app/319630/) - Like Telltale games mentioned above it's an episodic game more focused on storytelling than challenging puzzles. The first episode can be played for free if you want to try it out.

One more recommendation for games that aren't on Steam yet but will be released, the Zero Escape series. Currently Zero Time Dilemma is out on Steam but the first two in the series Nine Persons, Nine Hours, Nine Doors and Virtues Last Reward aren't yet though are coming next year. Highly recommend you okay them in order.

I swear I will finish Banner Saga, but I can't say I've enjoyed it. Feels like a massive slog to get it done, and it's not even that long.

Finally got this thing done in 14 hours, which seemed like 40. Way too repetitive. I mean, walk, fight, walk, talk, fight, fight, talk, walk and so on. The fighting was limited as far as strategy went, it's just that there was enough characters that I didn't care who was who or what so and so said. Then it felt like the game was just piling on at one point, when I had things under control, which is obviously by design. So that lends itself to not caring what happens. Resource balancing seemed to be weighted more toward keeping people alive rather than actually advancing their skills. The ending was open for a reason, but even with that, it didn't even come close to addressing the numerous concepts that it had opened during play.

I'm all for giving games a chance, and while I had a passing moment as it was done of, "oh maybe I was wrong," it soon faded as the credits suddenly rolled. That gave way to relief as I deleted it from my computer.

So my wife bought me the Oculus Rift without the controllers for Christmas, after some research decided to keep it rather than return for the Vive and bought the controllers(and a 3rd sensor).

Been loading up on Steam VR games. Really an incredible platform, but honestly before the touch controllers it felt like a novelty, after them it felt world changing. Oculus screwed up pretty bad being this late to the market with them, imho. They are just as critical to the immersion as the headset itself.

Sounds like I got in just in time for the Rift, controllers and 3rd sensor all became available this month and most/all Steam integration kinks have been worked out. Has all been pretty seemless.
