Gentlemen,
Anyone can draft a team of top shelf rock stars. But can you mine gold from the next tier? Internet fame and indie cred await. Behold it's the-
FOFC GREATEST BAND CHALLENGE PART DEUX: DEEP CUTS
You know the rules. The REVISED categories look like this:
Main Categories
Lead Singer
Lead Guitarist
Bass Guitarist
Keys
Drummer
Other Instrument
Songwriter
Manager/Producer
Cover Song
Sub-Categories
Rock
HIP HOP/JAZZ/R&B
COUNTRY/METAL
Female
21st century
1990s
1980s
1970s
1960s & Earlier
9 categories and sub-categories. We did away with POP and LABEL. Deal with it.
ALSO TO DEAL WITH: FEMALE can no longer be used as a COVER SONG. You're gonna have a chick in your band. PLAN ACCORDINGLY
We also expanded the HIP HOP and COUNTRY categories. Should provide some much needed flexibility as the talent pool shrinks.
It should go without saying but every individual selected in the initial draft is OFF THE BOARD. That list will be posted below.
As always common courtesy and the honor system apply. Please PM the next drafter after your selection. There's no time limit but if you're going to be away for a while let us know. We are reasonable people.
GOOD LUCK!!!

Okay, here we go...
1.1 Paul Simon, Songwriter, 1960s & Earlier
This was a real struggle with me. I hate having the first pick, so many directions to go. It's even harder when the best of the best are already off of the board.
Simon is considered one of the best songwriters ever, and he fits with the Cover Song I am angling for.
Go ahead and rip my pick now, lol.

No sir, I think it's a fine pick. Would have fit right in with the first draft which I think is a good litmus test.

1.3 George Harrison, Songwriter, 60s and Earlier
This pick, thanks to the one-per-act rule, will take a few other great options off the table, but George is too good to pass up. The tougher question was whether to slide him in as my guitarist or my songwriter. In the end, his songs all sound so distinct that I decided he'd have a bigger impact at songwriter.
My favorite early George tune with the Beatles:
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-Y9W8tgXKQU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
His songs are always interesting. Chords don't progress the same way. His musical arrangement always - ALWAYS - sets the emotional tenor that he's going for with his lyrics. Paul himself said that George's songwriting ability surpassed his and John's songwriting ability when George wrote "Something"; consider the source of that statement to understand how meaningful it is.
By the time he had left the Beatles, George had so much material built up (due to his approximate 2-song-per-album limit with the band) that he was able to put out the quadruple album All Things Must Pass in 1970, within months of the breakup. Then, in 1971, came what has to be considered one of the greatest concerts of all time, the Concert for Bangladesh. Here, George cemented himself on even footing with his bandmates once and for all.

1.6 Eric Clapton, Lead Guitarist, 60's and earlier
it's the first draft all over again. not a guy that was on my radar but too good to pass on. he sold more records in the 80's and 90's but i'm guessing his proper era is the 70's, right?

it's the first draft all over again. not a guy that was on my radar but too good to pass on. he sold more records in the 80's and 90's but i'm guessing his proper era is the 70's, right?
He's all over the board. I would lean toward the 70s since that was when he did the kinds of songs he is most known for (Layla, Cocaine, I Shot the Sherriff cover, etc.).
It has always been my plan to dance to "Wonderful Tonight" at my wedding, if such a travesty should come to pass. And, yes, I am dating a girl with "long blonde hair".
britrock88
07-19-2012, 01:27 PM
I would say '60s, with Cream.
Yeah, pinning George in at guitar/songwriter was a tough decision. I didn't really think I could go wrong, though.

would you say he's better known for cream or his solo stuff? his best selling albums were 1968 w/cream and 1994 from the cradle. and that unplugged album... huh. idk what to do
edit: i went with 60's
britrock88
07-19-2012, 02:10 PM
Because Cream was late '60s, I wouldn't kill you for going '70s. (I hope I can say the same of some late-'70s types I'd want to squeeze into the '80s.)

1.7 Waren Zevon, Keys, Rock
2.1 Tom Waits, Songwriter, 1970's
Chief Rum
07-19-2012, 02:33 PM
I think we should work to avoid some confusion here and skip over the ".3" picks in the odd rounds and ".6" picks in the even rounds. Those are CFs.
I am getting confused with britrock making his pick "1.3" and the next two following from that, but then Suicane goes to 1.7 and 2.1.

2.4 Hal Blaine, Drums, Rock
Hal Blaine was the anchor of the Wrecking Crew, the group of studio musicians that dominated the '60s on albums like Pet Sounds. He played with oodles of artists, including the Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, and many others whose names I shouldn't mention, some of whom I might protest to draft later because Blaine was a session player, after all.
Here's an example a song made great in no small part due to Hal's skill:
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QzhbGaCwBzs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
He drummed on forty #1 singles, and played on the Grammys' Record of the Year winners for SIX STRAIGHT YEARS ('66-'71). In sum...

Chief Rum
07-19-2012, 04:06 PM
Obviously, we're all concerned at this point for CF.
But as it relates to the draft, the real question is, how big of a window do we give him here, as his turn has come up again? Since he hasn't yet made his first pick, do we just go right on by his pick, and now when he returns, he'll get two picks? Or does every time his pick comes up, we give him an hour to respond?
What is fairest? If it's the former, Julio can pick right away. If it's the latter, than I guess we wait for an hour or two.
Chief Rum

I know people will question my second choice there, but I am really looking for Bowie's vision, not his singing voice. Bowie has always been a visionary at trying new and different sounds for his music. He has done some record producing. Not sure if he did his own work, or just others.
Point is, I want his influence and vision in the music of the band. If he happens to also be good at selling records, then awesome as well. ;)
It's a risk--I guess if we submit this again to a vote, the voters will penalize me if I have gone too far out with my category assignment there.

FWIW, Suicane, I looked up Bowie's records and he was credited as a Producer on all of them except the first three or four, from about Ziggy Stardust or so and onwards. Outside of Space Oddity, probably all of the hits you know best by Bowie (Changes, Rebel Rebel, Suffragette City, Young Americans, Let's Dance, Under Pressure, etc.) were produced either by himself alone or him with most commonly Tony Visconti.

Yeah, I was being too rough maybe. Knee jerk reaction. Although that tact does open up limitless possibilities.
Yeah, that might be on the borderline of the meaning of the category (well, okay, no maybe about it).
I can at least say that it is the job of a producer at least in part to produce and edit and arrange the sound of the music, and it's clear Bowie himself pretty much was the arranger and creative force behind the "sound" of his music, above and beyond writing and performing the music.
It's that creativity I am trying to tap for my band.

Disappointing that CF has had troubles getting back to the forum, since doing a second draft was really something he was behind and which he was very much for. I have to think when he does come full on back, he will be distressed to have even missed the picks he has missed.
Again, hope everything is well with him.

I seriously want to take a guy for my other instrument that would probably gain me scorn and praise in equal amounts.
I almost took a guy where his other instrument was "microphone". And then I considered steel guitarists. In both cases, I decided that I was cutting it too close to the other category definitions, even though the artist had in mind for the "mike" employs sound completely differently from an actual singer, and anyone who listens to country at all knows a steel guitar sounds very different--like a whole other instrument--than a traditional electric guitar.

This is a guy who I've really learned about by talking about our musical drafts with my bassist friend. Myung's technique is terrific, his musicality is superb. Dream Theater is every bit as musically proficient as the progressive rock bands of old, and Myung is a principal reason that's so.

4.4 Brian Eno, Producer, '70s
The father of ambient music also made a pretty solid impression on the more standard rock'n'roll of the '70s, too, working with Roxy Music, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Genesis, and Toto. He also helped push U2 to the forefront with his production work on The Joshua Tree. And to top it all off, he composed the Windows start-up ditty. He has been hugely influential in the development of popular music since his arrival on the scene, and will certainly help create a sound that is sparing, but powerful.

Santana's sound is perfect for what I am looking for. Glad he was still available, even if I had to slightly mis-categorize him.
I get what you guys were saying from the first draft--it's hard to decide how the Cover Song works and how you match your band to it or to each other. Do you go with talent or fit with each other or fit with the cover song or your own personal preference?
I have found I have moved away from talent for talent alone's sake and gone to choosing for a sound that is not only more conducive to my as yet unrevealed Cover Song choice, but is also more suited to my own personal musical tastes.

Great picks. Barker could have been placed in the 90's as well. He was getting decent coverage back than in Modern Drummer magazine.
Yeah, I had Barker tagged for drummer from near the start, but I wasn't sure he would last.
Barker does fit in either 90s or the 21st century, but I felt Santana last round was best in the 90s (well, after I had already used the 60s and 70s).

He's a solid pick for a second band. I would put him above Grohl.

7.4 Diana Ross, Vocalist, Female
Time to stop our collective neglect of Motown. Diana Ross led the Supremes, the most accomplished vocal group in American music history. Diana's voice isn't overpowering; instead, she sings with incredible clarity. She was at the forefront of Motown and popular music in the 1960s, and carried that success over into a long solo career and numerous honors.

7.6 Miles Davis, Other, Jazz
if it's on teh internet it has to be true
Miles Davis was a man of few words. When he did speak, his words often had a similar effect to a hand grenade being lobbed into the room. In 1987, he was invited to a White House dinner by Ronald Reagan. Few of the guests appeared to know who he was. During dinner, Nancy Reagan turned to him and asked what he’d done with his life to merit an invitation. Straight-faced, Davis replied: “Well, I’ve changed the course of music five or six times. What have you done except fuck the president?”

7.7 Esperanza Spalding, Other Instrument (Upright Bass), Female
I'm not gonna act like I know a lot about her but I was looking for female upright bass players and found her. She won the Grammy for best new artist last year, is critically acclaimed and if you YouTube her I think you'll be impressed. Any Tom Waits band can benefit from a 2nd Bass.
8.1 Lyle Lovett, Lead Singer, 1980's
I'm willing to take some flack for the 1980's grouping here but Lyle Lovett And His Large Band was released in 1989 and I sincerely believe it's the album that put him on the map some I'm fine with it. There really are few people who can I picture performing Tom Waits songs and doing Tom Waits things, while not as boisterous he's every bit as sly and dry.

8.4 Duke Ellington, Piano, Jazz
So, with the addition of jazz to our draft, I knew right away that I wanted to fill that genre with a pianist. There's such a wealth of great jazz pianists out there. I went with the Duke because in part because he was a big-band leader, which gives me greater confidence that he'd fit in well with the rather large bands we're tasked with putting together. Beyond that, though, Duke shaped the jazz of the mid-20th century as a prolific composer and was quite accomplished behind the piano, too.

Heh when Townshend saw Reni play in 1984 he said he was the most technically gifted drummer he had seen since Moon.
I was wavering between Reni and Stephen Morris of Joy Division/New Order. I figured both would be one of those picks not many would recognize/know.

Just kind of odd I was really into drumming back then and getting drummer magazines and such, and I don't recall him getting mentioned much. I did think of another 90's drummer though that I'm kind of mad I didn't think of earlier.

Haha reading the NKOTB thread...
We could do a third draft in which our bands will have members who absolutely awful and cringe-worthy, and see who can put together the worst band. The thinking being that, if you're absolutely brutally awful and yet you are successful enough to actually sell records, that's sort of an achievement in and of itself. :D
Oh, but we would have to do a two music album limit. No Eddie Murphys, Don Johnsons or Kobe Bryants here.
David Hasselhoff, however, eat your heart out. :)

Interesting choice. Love the song, of course, but I wonder if there's enough there musically for your band to carry?
One of the driving points for me on my cover song was to choose one where I could conceive of my entire band having a role in it being played.

9.4 "Someday Baby" - Bob Dylan, Cover, 21st century
This was the single off Dylan's well-loved and #1 album from 2006, Modern Times. It's a classic blues number, based on an old Muddy Waters and Allman Brothers tune. It has the kind of structure that allows space for the skill of Ellington, Metheny, Fleck, Myung, and Blaine to shine through, with Diana's soprano melody succinctly tying things together.

One of the driving points for me on my cover song was to choose one where I could conceive of my entire band having a role in it being played.
My idea was to entirely rework the song, since it was originally a Shel Silverstein poem. It's hard to imagine it different given its history, but if we just gave Nilsson the lyrics and told him to come up with something interesting that involved everyone, he probably could.
