I don't have a problem with Turner, though after seeing a full season of Turner and a full season of Harbaugh, I think Harbaugh's scheme fit's Alex much better. Turner is a great OC, and I think he should have just stuck with that.

You would have a problem with him if he was the head coach of your favorite team that has plenty of talent and year after year demands that they play to his mediocre standards. Consistently starting the season like they didn't have any training camps or pre-season games. Looking like they studied game film of a completely different team than the team they are currently playing.

Or more disturbing in what I saw last weekend when they played the 49ers in their last pre-season game...looking like a bunch of 90 year old men trying to run up a steep hill. I've never seen the Chargers that SLOW before. It was like they had sandbags tied to their ankles. To me, that points to a lack of preparedness and conditioning.

Good thing I do like the 49ers. :D

Alex Smith did look very good yesterday though. The whole team did actually. Though I do have a feeling special teams will be working on their punt return coverage in practice this week.

Though I do have a feeling special teams will be working on their punt return coverage in practice this week.

Well, to keep things in perspective, that punt returner would likely have been tackled by Anthony Dixon if it weren't for an illegal block in the back.

re: the rest of your post, I'm sure you're right. I've never been a fan of HC Norv. I don't think much stock should be put into pre-season games (if any), but I do think with a different coach the Chargers would be a stronger team.

I give Lee a D+ on his Deion Sanders-ish attempt at tackling the guy though. :)

I'm with you on pre-season games. The only thing I look for in pre-season games other than how the rookies play, is how the team 'looks'. It was bad.

In relation to "giving alex smith some stability"

But isn't that true of most top level QB's?

Yes you will always have a Ryan Leaf episode of two, but for the vast majority its not their talent that fails them, its the supporting cast either sucking wind or being changed on a year to year basis.

Didn't Alex Smith have something like 6 different OC his first 6 years in the league. Not only that, but before last year, wasn't his job always in question? Even this off season after he had a decent year last year, they were trying to sign Manning.

I don't think in his case is of changing teammates.

I really fear for Andy Dalton's life tonight. In the past month, the Bengals have replaced a center and a guard due to injury. The other guard is a rookie. Ngata is going to run wild in the Bengals backfield all night. Hope I'm wrong...

That AJ Green no-catch call was pretty bad there. Yeaterday's steelers game had a play where the play clock was at least a full second at 0, and they allowed Ben to call a timeout... Those two were a couple of the most obvious missed calls I e seen.

At what point does a catch turn into possession? Did AJ Green not catch the ball, take 2-3 steps, get tackled, and let go of the ball after his knees hit the ground? Good Lord I must be losing my mind.

Also - I hadn't noticed it so much yesterday, but the ball spots have been HORRIBLE. Ravens lost a yard on a play where the runner caught the ball, fell down without being touched, and rolled, yet they put him back where he fell. Then the Bengals had an unnecessary 3rd-and-1 when the receiver caught a ball a yard over the 1st down line but was driven back, and instead of giving him forward progress, he was marked where he was tackled. Just terrible.

That game last night reminded me a lot of what Baltimore did to Pittsburgh in the opener last year. I was pleasantly surprised at how the Bengals did for parts of the game last night. I was really worried about their offensive line, but they were ok. The LB's and DB's were putrid.

San Francisco 49ers UNDER 10 wins. Last season felt like a "everything that could go right did go right" season for them.

Anyone who would describe the 49ers season like this, obviously didn't watch many of their games. In fact, if you've been following the 49ers for the past few seasons, I'd argue that the Singletary era (which had many of the same players) was a collection of games where absolutely everything that could go wrong, did. Last year the 49ers played lights out football. That's why they won so many games.

Ummm . . . uh . . . well . . . yeah. So maybe you had a point ;)

That's why the ref said the play 'stands'. Had he said the play was 'confirmed', then he had visual evidence that it was a catch.

Ummm . . . uh . . . well . . . yeah. So maybe you had a point ;)

I was joking with my friend before the game. I said "I think the Packers win by 6, but it's a close game the whole way. What I love though, is that I can hope for the 49ers to completely crush the Packers, and it's not out of the question."

You really couldn't have drawn up a better week one scenario. The 49ers controlled the hell out of that game, and it was only when they stopped the aggressive pass rush that the Packers were able to move the ball late in the game.

It's just one game, but it's really hard not to let expectations get huge at this point.

I was wondering about that as well and for a while just chalked it up as "naw, i´m propably just seeing that because of all the talk about that injury affecting arm strength, not because it´s actually happening", but there really were a number of them throughout the game.

Even so, it was just damn impressive to see him manage that offense.

My random guesses/thoughts on OVER/UNDER numbers I got from a random website:

Green Bay Packers UNDER 12 wins. HIT. 12 is such a hard number to get.

New England Patriots OVER 12 wins. PUSH. Unless you are Bill Belichick.

Houston Texans OVER 10 wins. HIT. Went pretty much like I thought it would.

Philadelphia Eagles UNDER 10 wins. HIT. Went exactly how I thought it would.

New Orleans Saints UNDER 10 wins. HIT. Turns out that head coaches do matter.

Pittsburgh Steelers UNDER 10 wins. HIT. Maybe not as good as we think they are?

Baltimore Ravens OVER 10 wins. PUSH. Very little confidence in this team.

San Francisco 49ers UNDER 10 wins. MISS. I was a hater. I should not have been a hater.

Denver Broncos UNDER 9.5 wins. MISS. Yeah, I misunderestimated Manning. But worse than that, I misunderestimated John Fox.

New York Giants OVER 9.5 wins. MISS. I probably understand this team less than any team in football.

Detroit Lions UNDER 9.5 wins. HIT. http://cdn.memegenerator.net/instances/250x250/26656565.jpg

San Diego Chargers OVER 9 wins. MISS. This team had to have the least inspiring 7 wins of all time this season.

Atlanta Falcons UNDER 9 wins. MISS. I should not have been a hater. Also, where does Tony Gonzalez rank among all-time football players? Isn't what he's done and how long he's done it outside of typical classification metrics?

Chicago Bears OVER 8.5 wins. HIT. Lovie Smith will land somewhere and succeed.

Dallas Cowboys OVER 8.5 wins. MISS. Would have been a push but for that stupid half-point.

New York Jets UNDER 8.5 wins. HIT. Might have been the easiest play on the board.

Kansas City Chiefs OVER 8 wins. MISS. Apparently, there was a point this pre-season where we all agreed that 8 wins was a rational expectation for the Kansas City Chiefs. Except for me. I thought that was too low.

Cincinnati Bengals OVER 7.5 wins. HIT. Maybe the most underrated team in the league right now.

Carolina Panthers UNDER 7.5 wins. HIT. Gotta love the half-point.

Miami Dolphins UNDER 7.5 wins. HIT. Future looking bright in Miami. I've always liked the Dolphins, so I hope that they can build on this season.

Tennessee Titans UNDER 7 wins. HIT. My crazy offseason speculation. Tennessee decides to part ways with CJ2K. The Pats pick him up for cheap and turn him into the most dangerous 15-touches-per-game weapon in the league.

Buffalo Bills OVER 7 wins. MISS. Who knew that Fitzgerald was a bad QB? I had the Bills challenging the Pats the season. I know much less about football that I thought I did.

Seattle Seahawks OVER 7 wins. HIT. My notes on this pick were "people seem to love the new QB."

Oakland Raiders OVER 7 wins. MISS. Worth repeating: I know much less about football than I thought I did.

Arizona Cardinals UNDER 7 wins. HIT. What a strange season.

Washington Redskins UNDER 6.5 wins. MISS. RGIII is so awesome, I don't even mind being wrong here.

St. Louis Rams OVER 6 wins. HIT. How would we feel about Steven Jackson if he played for the Pats or Packers or Steelers? Criminally underrated player.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers OVER 6 wins. HIT. I was right about this. But, man, that does not feel like a seven win team.

Minnesota Vikings UNDER 6 wins. MISS. AP made me miss this all by himself.

Cleveland Browns UNDER 5.5 wins. HIT. What will the new management do with Weeden?

Indianapolis Colts OVER 5.5 wins. HIT. Good for them.

Jacksonville Jaguars UNDER 5.5 wins. HIT. What to do with this team?

Total Record: 19-11-2. I benefited by missing some of my picks by a lot, but by getting most of the close ones. And, of course, by not having actual money on the line that would have caused me to over-think these and mess up most of them.
