I'm seeing some tweets that the replacement officials will be used to start the regular season.

Not good.

I'm torn on the replacements. I like that they keep their flags in their pants for most of the game, but in some cases they've missed some really, really obvious calls that would have swung games completely in the other direction. It seems they're especially gun-shy about calling defensive pass interference.

I predict that when you compare the articles about missed calls by the officials over the first couple of weeks of the season this year to the articles about missed calls by the officials over the first couple of weeks of last season, you won't see any real difference.

hopefully, it is just posturing by the NFL. They have no incentive to act like they are going to back down, even if they fully intend to. negotiations always seem to go to the 11th hour.

I like this...dpi has emasculated defenses. I prefer old school football though so I am biased.

I think you've already been proven wrong by the preseason results (for example calling the helmet-to-helmet personal foul penalty and still giving the intercepting team the ball).

I'm not sure if you all realize this or not but the philosophies of what is to be called and what isn't is dicated by the head of officiating who is employed by the NFL (currently not locked out). The rules have not changed just because we have a new set of officials doing the games at the moment.

This is just my opinion, but I think the league would be better served to come out with a video and show what is legal and what isn't when it comes to DPI and holding and release it to the general public. It would go a long way in educating the general fan and those newspaper guys who claim their are all these missed calls when in reality there aren't.

The missed calls I was referring to were blatant, to the point where it the wideout was tackled/completely stopped in their tracks.

No flag.

Other than those, I think they've done fine. I've seen some helmet-to-helmet shots that weren't called, and some QB's have taken REALLY nasty hits, but in all I'm not worried.

It's preseason for the officials who are learning. My prediction was for next week, week 1 of the regular season. I'm not saying they won't make mistakes, I am predicting that they won't make many more than the regular crews were making, and the talk won't be any worse.

I may well be completely wrong as well.

I don't know if it is real or not, but I appreciate NFL Network not taking Tebow very seriously and treating him like the circus that he really is.

EDIT - That is a circus created by ESPN, btw.

My random guesses/thoughts on OVER/UNDER numbers I got from a random website:

Green Bay Packers UNDER 12 wins. There is no backup there if Rodgers gets hurt. And I think that they overachieved a bit last season.

New England Patriots OVER 12 wins. If everyone stays healthy, this offense could challenge the copious records set by the 2011 Saints.

Houston Texans OVER 10 wins. Ten feels about right. But I'll say over because having one of the few running games left in football has to be worth something.

Philadelphia Eagles UNDER 10 wins. Big under here for me. I see the Eagles falling apart. Just a feeling.

New Orleans Saints UNDER 10 wins. Hate to say it, but if I were to bet on this, I'd have to go under. You can only make up so much for that much turmoil. I HATE to see a year of Drew Brees go to waste, but there it is.

Pittsburgh Steelers UNDER 10 wins. Roethlisberger takes too many hits. I think that it catches up to them this season.

Baltimore Ravens OVER 10 wins. I think that the Ravens will be the clear #2 in the AFC behind the Pats.

San Francisco 49ers UNDER 10 wins. Last season felt like a "everything that could go right did go right" season for them.

Denver Broncos UNDER 9.5 wins. No idea, really. But I don't think that that team is built to maximize Manning's abilities.

New York Giants OVER 9.5 wins. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt after a couple of Super Bowl wins.

Detroit Lions UNDER 9.5 wins. This is a fun team. And I want to believe. But I think that their coach is mostly sizzle. And to take it to the next level, you need steak.

San Diego Chargers OVER 9 wins. This is a talented team. And I am convinced that Rivers had a secret injury last season.

Atlanta Falcons UNDER 9 wins. Just a feeling here.

Chicago Bears OVER 8.5 wins. I think that the Bears might be the best team in the NFC this season.

Dallas Cowboys OVER 8.5 wins. Quiet offseason for Dallas. That's a good sign for them.

New York Jets UNDER 8.5 wins. This team has meltdown written all over them.

Kansas City Chiefs OVER 8 wins. Good QB. Good RBs. Good WRs. Good Coach. Good for 9-7.

Cincinnati Bengals OVER 7.5 wins. I believe in Dalton.

Carolina Panthers UNDER 7.5 wins. Newton is a great QB. I just have a feeling that things went a little too well for him last season.

Miami Dolphins UNDER 7.5 wins. They had to make this line before Tannahil (sp?) was named the starter.

Tennessee Titans UNDER 7 wins. I overpaid to get CJ2K on my fantasy team. But that does not mean that I believe in the Titans.

Buffalo Bills OVER 7 wins. I am bullish on the Bills.

Seattle Seahawks OVER 7 wins. This team has not been as bad as people think over the last couple of seasons. And people seem to love the new QB.

Oakland Raiders OVER 7 wins. There's enough talent on this team to go at least .500.

Arizona Cardinals UNDER 7 wins. I have no idea why the over/under is at 7.

Washington Redskins UNDER 6.5 wins. RGIII is awesome. But he is a rookie. Just don't see it this season.

St. Louis Rams OVER 6 wins. If they get under 6 wins this season, you have to wonder about Sam Bradford, right?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers OVER 6 wins. Since I went under on the other three teams in the division, I have to make up those wins somewhere.

Minnesota Vikings UNDER 6 wins. I think that the Vikings will learn a lot this season about the future of their team. But it will be some painful lessons.

Cleveland Browns UNDER 5.5 wins. If McCoy were starting, I'd have given them the over.

Indianapolis Colts OVER 5.5 wins. Sucking for Luck was the best move they could have made.

Jacksonville Jaguars UNDER 5.5 wins. Sucking for Gabbert, on the other hand . . . .

I did not realize until yesterday that the game is Wednesday, not Thursday like previous years.

How soon before the opener is a Monday night game, 6 days before the rest of the season opens?

This year, it is because of the President's speech at the DNC being on Thursday.

But I agree with your overall point.

I could see the NFL Kicking off with a Wednesday/Thursday set of double headers.

One of the issues going too much earlier than Wednesday would be the last preseason games. Teams need enough time to set their rosters. But could Wednesday become the new Thursday? Sure. Why not. If there is $$ to be made, why leave it on the table?

This game has me a little worried because the Giants are pretty banged up at corner. Nicks also hasn't played much in the pre season and Bradshaw has been a little banged up. We are also pretty weak at TE.

That being said I have faith that Eli will get the job done. I think Cruz has a huge game and David Wison will have a coming out party. I think Romo will likely be running for his life most of the game. Jerry Jones comments have the D-Line fired up.

I think it will be a close game that ends with a Romo mistake/sack.

Roger Goodell is currently petitioning for the creation of a new day, Good-day, that will occur once a year, sometime in early September, only to be used for NFL season openers.

I think the over/under of 10 on the Niners is brutal. They're clearly the class of the NFC West, but they have a really difficult schedule this year, and there's bound to be some turnover and health regression to the mean this season. I'm pretty sure 10-6 is the number for them. 9-7 would be a huge disappointment, but it's not outside the realm of possibility.

Thanks. I was hoping to get the Lions game here in Chicago, but I went to the station's web site and saw that they're playing a Rocky movie. So I guess we're in the "No Game due to NFL Rules" section. Blah.

Incidentally...Rocky? Why show a guy movie when football games are on? Shouldn't you be trying to go after a demographic not as interested in football?

Indy and Chicago play at 1pm on CBS, Rams and Lions also play at 1pm on FOX,
no other game can be shown on another network in that time slot, since the Bears are at home.

The biggest mismatch this game is Dallas OL vs. NY DL (probably followed by a tie between Nicks vs. Claiborne / Austin vs. Giants #2 CB). I think Dallas has improved on defense from last year, but a Witten-less offense and bad offensive line makes it hard to expect they can pull off the road upset.

San Francisco 49ers UNDER 10 wins. Last season felt like a "everything that could go right did go right" season for them.

Anyone who would describe the 49ers season like this, obviously didn't watch many of their games. In fact, if you've been following the 49ers for the past few seasons, I'd argue that the Singletary era (which had many of the same players) was a collection of games where absolutely everything that could go wrong, did. Last year the 49ers played lights out football. That's why they won so many games.

Bittersweet day for me.... football is back. Giants vs. Cowboys. My buddy who passed away a few weeks ago was a big Giants fan. Since I'm a Cowboy fan, he would always come over for the two Cowboys vs. Giants games every year for what we termed "Blatz Bowl". The bet for each game was a case of Blatz (we started the tradition when we were poor college students), to be collected the next time the teams play.

I'm having a few friends over tonight, but there will be an empty seat with an opened can of Blatz sitting there for Kevin.

They had injuries most of the year and got healthy the right time. They have a 2 time Superbowl MVP at QB, 2 all pro caliber receivers, pro bowlers on the O-Line and the best D-Line in football.

Teams in the NFL don't "get hot" for 4 games in the play offs, it doesn't happen. They won because the peaked at the right time and have tons of talent, to sell them short is a huge disservice to them.

The Giants may end up having to send Bill Belichick a thank you note for taking Ballard off waivers. When the Giants signed Bennett, I thought he may end up, overall, being an upgrade and so far, he's been solid.

Does a fan have a whistle or something? I swear every other play on a Cowboys possession someone is blowing a whistle at random.

So, neck high counts as head hunting?

The rules for roughing the passer say the head or neck area.

"In covering the passer position, Referees will be particularly alert to fouls in which defenders impermissibly use the helmet and/or facemask to hit the passer, or use hands, arms, or other parts of the body to hit the passer forcibly in the head or neck area (see also the other unnecessary-roughness rules covering these subjects). <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> so as far as i can tell it was just a total screw up by the refs, but perhaps there is a reason that i am unaware of for this.

on the last possession of the game just before the 2 minute warning, the cowboys had 3rd and 2 from around the 34 yard line. they ran the play, whiche got a first down, but got a holding penalty, which should have made it 3rd and 12 from the 24.

instead, the ball was spotted at the 26, and it was only 3rd and 10...the resulting pass to Ogletree picked up 11 yards, and ended the game.

ref F-up?

I caught that too.

I didn't care enough to back the TiVo up, but where this would be legitimate is if the holding occurred at the 36 yard line. I don't know if that's what happened, but the spot would be accurate if that was the case.

Spot of the foul I assume

3rd and 2 at DAL 34
D.Murray left end to DAL 37 for 3 yards (K.Phillips).
PENALTY on DAL-J.Witten, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at DAL 36. Officially, a rush for 2 yards.

cartman

Yeah, the holding occurred down field from the line of scrimmage.

Ksyrup
09-06-2012, 07:52 AM
Usually a line hold will just be considered the LOS, but on that play it was Witten holding so maybe they marked it more specifically to where he was. Although as I recall, he was basically blocking at the LOS. Not like he went down field and blocked. But holding is a spot of the foul call.

Since this run ended beyond the neutral zone and the foul occured behind the end of the run (End of Run = 37, Spot of Foul = 36), the penalty is enforced at the spot of the foul.

The only way it would go back to the previous spot and be enforced is if the end of the run was behind the neutral zone and there was a hold on the play.

in 30 something years of watching football, i have never seen this before.

but if this is the rule, lets say it is 1st and 10, and a team throws an incomplete pass, but the hold occured 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage, why isnt it 1st and 23 (10 yards from the spot of the foul).

the only time i can think of that i have ever seen holding enforced as a spot of the foul penalty is during run backs...even if a wide receiver holds on a running play, it has always been 10 yards from the previous spot (or so i thought)

That shaky block in that back on Cruz last night (he had his hands on his back, but he wouldn't have woken a baby with the strength of that push) was also enforced as a spot foul. It started out as a 3rd and 10 and ended up as a 3rd and 2, I believe.

It used to be that way in college, that holding was a spot foul where ever it occurred. Since then college has matched the NFL rule that if the penalty occurs behind the line of scrimmage, the penalty is enforced from the line of scrimmage.

Yeah, it's quite common for blocking downfield to result in a 10 yard penalty but still a 1st down. So if it's 3rd and 5 and you get a 35 yard pass play but a WR holding 30 yards down field (say, at the 15 yard line), the ball is spotted at the 25 but it's 1st down because the result of the play minus the penalty yardage still puts them beyond the 1st down marker.

Going back to the holding call on Witten, I just watched the play a few times on NFL's web site ( NFL Videos: Cowboys vs. Giants highlights (http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap2000000058937/Cowboys-vs-Giants-highlights) - occurs at 3:25 in the video - Witten is the TE nearest to the camera, lined up off the LOS). It sure looks like Witten's hold is on the 34 yard line, not the 36.

(Not that I think it's a big issue. I'm sure the regular refs make 1-2 yard mistakes too and it's not like that cost the Giants the game. I just got curious and went looking.)

albionmoonlight

So are the coaches still suspended?

Yes.

This was more of a procedural issue on appeal. The question was whether, under the CBA, this was conduct over which the Commissioner had authority.

The decision held that it was not (or, possibly, that part of it was, but that he punished as if all of it was).

The panel did not (from what I can tell) decide whether the conduct actually happened or not, or (if it did happen) what the punishment should have been. That was not their charge. Their only question was whether the Commissioner, under the CBA, had the right to make that call.

Because the coaches and the team are not part of the CBA, the coach suspensions and the team fines/draft pick losses are not affected by the decision.

bronconick
09-07-2012, 03:35 PM
It sounds like the parts where the money was given out are CBA violations, and go to the 3rd party arbitrator for punishment. If Goodell has proof that the money was for injuries as opposed to something else, he can suspend for that alone under his authority over off the field misconduct.

Lathum

bronconick
09-07-2012, 03:54 PM
Paying under the table violates the CBA. CBA violations are not things that Goodell is allowed to make rulings on. That goes to a 3rd party arbitrator and are considered less severe violations compared to injuring players for pay or off the field arrests, etc that Goodell gets to weigh in on.

It's really very easy - the Saints players have admitted they paid extra for hits that caused a player to leave the field for one or more plays. That only happens when you injure someone. By their own admission, they paid extra for injury. Really the only true debate is if they paid extra for knocking someone completely out of the game (Favre, etc).

I don't know, part of me also thinks that this was a shitty attempt by Goodell to make an example out of a team after the league had ignored these things for decades. To pretend like they give a shit about violence in the game (they don't). Just feels sort of shitty that these guys livelihoods are at the mercy of a guy who is basing his decisions strictly on public relations.

I'm fine with the suspension of Payton if he was behind it. Not sure I feel he should be running around suspending players though like that.

Just feels sort of shitty that these guys livelihoods are at the mercy of a guy who is basing his decisions strictly on public relations.

If Roger Goodell did nothing, the PR hit would be what exactly? Sounds like he would've gotten a pro-vote from you, at least. So in your eyes, he's taking a public relations hit for suspending these guys...so that might not be the rationale for making a big stink over this.

These bounty-players livelihoods are subsidized greatly by the presence of guys like Payton Manning and Brett Favre on the football field. Putting a bounty out on those guys is akin to shooting your bank account in the face. And also the entire league's bank account.

So I think you are right, there are financial stipulations here...but these players being "knocked out of action" for a few weeks by suspension is the lesser of two evils compared to super-advertiser QBs getting knocked out for a few weeks. If the message received by the players is, "Don't fucking do this again because we'll take every penny you earned in bounties and more" then for the long-term, it's a win-win. Reversing course now does what, exactly? Puts these knuckleheads and their bounties back out there to knock out the cash-cows of the league? Not brilliant.

Just to refresh everyone's memory, this is the statement Greg Williams released a while back when the story broke.

"I want to express my sincere regret and apology to the NFL, Mr. Benson, and the New Orleans Saints fans for my participation in the ‘pay for performance’ program while I was with the Saints. It was a terrible mistake, and we knew it was wrong while we were doing it. Instead of getting caught up in it, I should have stopped it. I take full responsibility for my role. I am truly sorry. I have learned a hard lesson and I guarantee that I will never participate in or allow this kind of activity to happen again."

This statement alone, in my opinion, is evidence enough to ban half of these guys indefinitely. Yes, sometimes you do need to make examples out of people, and this would be a perfect opportunity to do so.

RainMaker
09-09-2012, 08:26 AM
I don't know if it would be a pro-vote from me, I just think this is a giant publicity stunt. In fact, all the safety crap coming out of the commissioners office is a publicity stunt.

But I don't think these bounties were increasing the risk of injury. I don't think players were going to try any harder to knock a QB out of the game. And no matter what public face players put on, they do want to knock the opposing QB out of the game bounty or not. Nothing changes there. I don't think the league was at risk of going under because of these bounties.

And I'm fine with the league taking action going forward. But my opinion has changed on it regarding the players. The league built a culture around this. They became popular because of the violence, because of the big hits. Then all of a sudden they want to criminalize that culture when the media starts writing concussion stories. I just think it's unfair to the players for penalizing them for something that the league encouraged.

gstelmack
09-09-2012, 08:27 AM
Would this be in the affadavits they filed in federal court? Or does Goodell have it on a scratch tape recording he found in his garage?

No, it's all the interviews and responses they had once the ledger came out. The players have publically stated in their definitions of what the various types of hits were, and a couple were for players that missed at least a few plays afterward. You don't miss a play if you're feeling fine after a hit.

I don't think there's any way to win or be perfectly consistent with a problem this complicated. It's inconsistent to try to legislate safety into a sport as dangerous as football in the first place. If they want to be really consistent they should shut the league down. But having some measures in place at least reduces risk, I don't see how that's a bad thing. I don't think the fact that there's an old game of yore that has has a violent nickname means that the NFL can never tweak the rules here and there to try to mitigate disaster. If it makes business sense to go to 18-games, they SHOULD counteract that with more rules addressing safety, like roster sizes. They shouldn't avoid making those tweaks just because it's "inconsistent". Sure, 18 games adds a risk, but having only say 2 games, or none, would greatly reduce it. But I think they can and should try to address safety, even if it's inconsistent that they're also not say, reducing the schedule or the length of games. It's a tough decision with a lot of money at stake - there's millions of possible ways to approach it between ignoring safety completely, and shutting the league down. The NFL has to go with 1 of those million, and it inevitably won't be the perfect approach in most people's eyes, but it doesn't mean it's not a reasonable one.

Vikings coaches finally realizing Ponder can't throw downfield and they should just have him dump it off to Harvin.

RGIII might be kind of good.

I got a pretty big hard on for RG3 right now

This is about the most excited I've been as a Skins fan in over a decade.

Stafford has 24 attempts with 3 picks. Smith has 38 yards on 8 carries. I don't know, maybe, run the ball more?

How to get from 3-0 to 3-17: Have Trannyhill throw 3 picks.

The best thing about RGIII and Newton is they are makign NFL offenses more exciting to watch. If they can help make the NFL less boring, that's a good thing. Because compared to Saturdays, the NFL is like watching Jay Leno most of the time.

The Browns had the easiest ability to trade for that spot and didn't. I think at some point McCoy gets back in. 6-17 with 2 INTs with a 4.4 rating is not what you want from an old rookie QB.

The 3-4 minutes of actual game time it took for Houston to put up 21 points is probably enough for me to not bother with this sport for another season.

Down to the 4 and we've got Adrian Peterson with 2 TDs already today. Let's have Ponder throw a couple passes....:banghead:

Of course he'll throw two passes to the line of scrimmage and they won't get in.

I don't think I saw any games last year involving the Browns, but I didn't get the impression that Colt McCoy performed that badly. Did he really do so bad that the Browns felt it was necessary to start a rookie QB this year?

Edit: Look up on PRF, and McCoy's stats were: 57.2% Comp%, 14 TD, 11 INT, 5.9 Y/A and 74.1 Rating. Not good at all, but I'm not sure that really warrants a "Fuck this guy, let's go with a rookie next year." response. If they had gotten a top guy, sure, but Weeden? McCoy is going to get his job soon unless Weeden suddenly flips a switch and starts playing well. Not sure I see that happeneing.

Let me make a hopeful answer: This half's d. Three turnovers in three possessions. Like the looks of this.

Shit- Get up Locker...

2 Titans down and the play getting attention. Washington gets nailed and fumbles and Locker hurt making the tackle.

Locker is gonna kill his WR's if he keeps throwing high over the middle like that?

Washington got destroyed (clean hit). And Locker got injured making the tackle after the fumble recovery.

Better for Titan WR's if he doesn't. He's been winging them high all day.
