These drafts are always a lot of fun, and we haven't done one in a little while, so here is one near and dear to my heart. I love comedies. I'm hoping as a result, I will find some new movies to watch.
Rules:
1. All selections must be movies. No TV shows, plays, etc.
2. You will draft comedies from several genres, listed below.
3. You must fit these in several time periods, also listed below.
4. Once a movie is selected, you cannot use any remakes or sequels of the movie. Actors and Actresses CAN be reused.
5. The audience will vote once all picks have been made. Participants may vote, but can't vote for themselves.
6. Don't give out potential answers.
7. Try to be somewhat expedient with your picks. Also, as a courtesy, PM the person who is picking after you once you have made your pick.
I'll take the first 10 who are interested as the participants. At that point, I will determine draft order randomly. This will be a serpentine draft (1st pick then 20th pick, 2nd pick then 19th pick, etc.)

Is it each of the categories in each of the time periods? A completed list of 100? Or is it 10 movies that fit a category and a decade. I assume the latter... I can be an alternate.

There's a lot of comedies I like that I have no idea how to shoehorn into the 10 categories.
That's the reason I made a wild card category. Some are just really hard to define a genre.
Still four spots open. If we have trouble finding takers, would britrock and timmae be willing to work together as a team?

Now looking at the categories more closely I have some questions.
Wouldn't all historical, music, horror, sports, war and religious comedies be parodies?
Maybe change parody with dark comedies?
cartman
01-15-2015, 03:24 PM
Without naming names, I think parody would be one that mocks another movie/entertainment source. But that's for the voters to decide.
Chief Rum

I think a Dark Comedy section (regardless of whether it replaces Parody or not) would be awesome.

Probably because of ignorance, I think pre-70s decades are going to be tough, esp having to shoehorn them into categories.

I think you're right, Bucc.
Maybe we can adjust the periods to five year increments for some of the more recent years. Such as
2010-present
2005-2009
2000-2004
1995-1999
1990-1994
1985-1989
1980-1984
1960-1979
Before 1960
Wildcard
This might really mess with your brother's Ingmar Bergman plan, though. ;)

OK, it looks like we have 10. I've listed the draft order in the first post, so ColtCrazy is on the clock. Brit, you are technically the 10th person to commit, but I wasn't sure if you and timmae were going to work together or not, so please let me know.
Here are some notes:
Due to popular demand, I've changed the date requirements. Please see the first post for the new dates.
Dark comedies is a category I was debating using. Since that seems to be popular, I have replaced religion with dark comedy. Religion seemed to be the toughest category, so it makes sense to me to replace that one.
I don't want to go into too much detail about the parody category without giving examples, but IMO, if you can explain what the comedy is parodying, then it should fit into that category. Remember, the forum will vote, so make sure you have a good argument.
Good luck everyone! I have no idea what to expect with these picks.

Without giving anything away, I have a certain directors/actors/groups that must be on my list, but this one movie stood out and needed to be picked early. I'll go into more detail on my picks in the recap, but this satirical Cold War movie succeeded at a time when the Cold War was at its height. Not sure that's replicated in today's climate.

It's the endless debate of picking for voters (which, imo, is the winning method) vs category locking vs personal preferences. It's his favorite but I thought this would score well since it is popular here regardless of details.

1.5 - Toy Story, 1995-99, Teenager
Groundbreaking in that it ushered in the era of modern CGI-animated films and that it was funny for all ages while remaining a kid's movie in essence.

I agree. The early draft is hard, since the initial pick can somewhat define your strategy for the rest of the draft.

I think the concern with Suicane's suggestion is if someone has already picked with a strategy that utilized the date ranges put forth already. If the ones who have already picked pass on it, though, I think it would be okay. I agree that the 80s are a very strong stretch of great comedies to be represented with just one decade category.
I would recommend changing the three 2000s categories to 2000-2007, and 2008-present, and replacing the third with 1980-1984, and shrinking the current 80s category to 1985-1989.
But considering we have already started the draft, it's entirely fair to just move forward with the categories as presented.

I think this is a pretty fair suggestion, but since timmae has already picked in the 80's category, I think it is only right that he signs off on this. I don't know if it will affect his strategy or not. However, since the draft has already started, if any of the participants objects, we will keep the time frames as is.

I'm tripping out right now, because I keep thinking of some great comedies and then end up having difficulty fitting them into a category. If it doesn't fit into one of the bigger categories (Romantic, Teenager) and it's not in an obvious subgenre (Sports, War, Music) it takes some thinking to make it work into some of the other categories.

Great movie, intriguing category.
This was about Airplane being a Dark Comedy. This was a really hard one to place, given the categories presented. You could call it a romantic comedy because of Stryker and the stewardess. Maybe you could call it a parody of the disaster films in vogue at the time (Towering Inferno, Earthquake, etc.). But it doesn't really fit in either one, IMO. If you want to go really edgy, call it a musical for the dance scene or a war movie because of the references to Stryker's war troubles.
Really, it's just an iconic comedic movie. So I picked the movie first and tried the best category for it. It is, after all, a movie about a potential crashing plane. So Dark Comedy it is lol.

Suicane - Some Like it Hot is a strong pick. You have Marilyn Monroe. You have great performances from Curtis and Lemon. Maybe it's not innuendo filled comedy of later decades (or the shock filled smut of today's standards), but it's still a damn funny movie.

Yeah, I looked at that list, rotten tomatoes, and several others just to make sure I wasn't forgetting something. You look at a list from college humor and half the movies aren't even funny. I don't think what's funny has ever changed. There's still slapstick in today's movies. I'll take good writing and funny lines over sophomoric humor with no plot any day. Hollywood seems to forget what's funny from time to time.

Going through our text messages, the thought was that there were only a few really good comedies for music and this would be an obvious one (Blues Brothers was another). What held us back was the 1980-1984 time frame which would lock us out of a lot of classic comedies.

This is not a criticism, because I love the categories we have, but I have come to realize in looking at the best comedies still remaining that there could have been several other very specific and deep categories, ones that are actually probably deeper than some of the ones we have (like Music and War).
The list I have so far:
Capers--this would be a deep category
Buddy--so would this
Showcase (i.e. one comedic talent is the focus; movie, though, not a comedy show)
Cop/Detective/Mystery
Ensemble
Family
Holiday--would probably end up mostly Christmas films, but it would be a deep group

Except that drafts like this work best if there are limited choices which result in having to make hard choices. Since comedies are so extensive, the draft simply becomes shooting fish in a barrel with very little distinctions between any of the lists. What if there were only 3 good choices in each category (instead of 10+), that makes choosing riskier.

I can see that, but I also think that a comedy draft should include the best comedy movies, and frankly, some of the best movies, period, don't fit at all in the categories we have. They fit much better in at least one of the ones I list above.
I don't think it's beneficial to the draft concept to go with a shallow, niche category when we can get a deeper category that gives a better representation of comedy movies as a whole.
It's like doing an all time baseball draft, but no one from a New York or Boston based team can be drafted.

That was my whole reasoning for having a wild card category. Some of the categories you mentioned I considered using (buddy, crime, entertainment industry, road trip, and slapstick were some I was debating about), but I wanted some easy categories, some tough categories, and I included wild card because there are certain movies that are tough to categorize.
Bottom line, it is tough to limit it to 10 categories.
