Event 4 – High Jump – Recap
Winners
Llyw – Needed a big event and got it…could have done better but benefits from the fact that overall the results were off
Chilton – See Llyw
Babson – Not that his result was great, but outperformed expectation and the poor overall results of the field help his status
Losers
Schaplowsky – was capable of going much higher, missed opportunity
Palmiero – unfortunate rolls kills chances here…three misses at 6’ 7” is bad luck with that card
Ginsberg – jumped from 6’ 3” to 6’ 9” in attempts…risk didn’t pay off

Overall Standings Analysis
The top of the standings remain the same with Babson, Ketola, and Nielsen holding on to the medal spots and Jordan right on their heals, but after that, there has been some significant shuffling.
Rambis Jr. falls from 5th to 11th, and with his injury I don't expect to see him climb back into contention. Mighty's effort in the high jump allowed him to pass several people as he climbs from 10th to 7th, and the defending champion Llyw moves from 13th to 8th in 1 event.
Lots of events left so I'm sure there will be plenty more changes before this thing is over.

Event 5 - 400 Meters - Game Mechanics
The 400 Meters is made up of four 100 Meter segments, where a dice is rolled for each segment. We can do this a couple of different ways...
1. You announce your effort level up front for all 4 segments and I roll it and post the complete results
2. You announce your effort level for the first segment, I roll it post results, and you announce your effort level for the second attempt, I roll it post results, etc. (this theoretically allows you to adjust based on how the event is playing out).
Please let me know how you'd like to proceed.
Just so you know...if I don't hear from you, all rolls will be done in the average column.
Also if I don't get responses on how to run this event, I'll choose option one because it is easier and faster.
I'd like to run this event tomorrow afternoon, so get your vote in along with your effort levels (in order if possible)

Game Mechanics Clarification
I wanted to take a second to clarifiy something. The effort points allotted were designed to be split between days...
from the initial write up, complete with typos and poor grammar "Another new twist with this version is - You'll only get to use All Out a set numnber of times for the each day."
So if you had 10 effort points, 5 could be used each day...that means those don't carry over. However, if you received a PM from me regarding Effort/Rest and you chose to get an Effort Point over keeping your rest...that one does carry over.

Option 2 is better, but I think that may cause the race to last about a week in real time. :)

I agree. I'm lucky that I'm in front of a computer most of the day, so option 2 would be no problem for me, I can pm you my effort level for each segment sometime tonight or tomorrow morning
Will you be posting predictions on how players will do?
I would prefer option 1 for sake of ease.

Event 5 – 400 Meters – Heat 1
In the first heat we have:
Lane 2 – Path
Lane 3 – Schaplowsky
Lane 4 – Nielsen
Lane 5 – Bafou
Lane 6 – Ginsberg
Lane 7 – Babson
Lane 8 – Ketola
Lane 9 – Palmiero
This could be a really good heat. Schaplowky, Path, and Bafou consistently run similar times, so I expect them to get out early and basically run away from the field.
The runners, go through their routines, they get in the blocks, the gun sounds and…my word, Schaplowsky was slow out of the blocks…so slow that Path has already really eaten into his stagger. Path appears to have the early lead, but Bafou and Palmiero also look good early.
As the they exit the corner it looks like Palmiero actually has a slight lead on Path, Bafou and Ginsberg – who ran the corner especially well. As they head into the third hundred it looks like Palmiero, Path, Bafou, Ginsberg, Nielsen, Babson, Schaplowsky and Ketola, who is already over a full second behind 7th place.
The final corner sees Palmiero continuing to push, I wonder if he’ll be able to hold on for the last 100. Path seems to be starting to separate from Bafou a little. Ginsberg and Nielsen appear to have had bad splits, which has allowed Babson and Schaplowsky, who really poured it on that last split, to pull into contention with them.
Coming down the straightaway, it’s Palmiero and Path…Path is closing while Palmiero tries to hold onto his slight lead…Bafou is also making a charge on this final leg…as he begins to close on the two leaders.
Schaplowsky continues his charge as well, blowing by Nielsen and Babson like they’re standing still. He’s closing on Ginsberg too…it’ll be close at the line.
At the line…it’s a photo finish…between all 3 lead runners. I couldn’t tell who got there first, Palmiero, Path or Bafou…
Schaplowsky continues to close on Ginsberg…at the line and I can’t tell…I think Schaplowsky ran out of room and didn’t quite catch Ginsberg, but I’ll have to wait and see.
Babson crosses in 6th place with a time of 50 seconds, which is probably better than he expected. Nielsen is 7th crossing the line at 50.15…and Ketola strolls across at 52.05.
As we wait on the ruling from the officials on the photo finishes…
The second group results are announced and Ginsberg did hold off Schaplowsky as they finished with a time of 49.15 and 49.2 respectively.
As for the winner…Path’s lean at the line earns him the victory in the heat with a time of 48.5. Palmiero and Bafou tie at 48.55

Event 5 – 400 Meters – Heat 2
The second heat breaks down like this:
Lane 2 – Honcho
Lane 3 – Mighty
Lane 4 – Peltonen
Lane 5 – Chilton
Lane 6 – Rambis
Lane 7 – Jordan
Lane 8 – Llyw
This one should be all about Honcho…in fact because he’s in lane 2 it’ll be entertaining to see him quickly chew into the stagger of the other runners.
The runners take their mark, the gun sounds and Honcho does immediately eat up the stagger on Mighty, but Peltonen appears to be holding his own, and Llyw may actually be a bit quicker in the opening stage, but it is hard to tell with him all the way on the outside and with Jordan looking like he’s in slow motion.
Coming out of the corner, it looks like Peltonen, Llyw and Honcho are all neck and neck, but Peltonen and Llyw appear to have more momentum…
Down the far straight…it is Peltonen and Llyw edging in front of Honcho, then there is a big drop back to Chilton, followed by Rambis, who is really hobbled, and then Jordan and Mighty are bringing up the rear.
Half way through the second turn, Honcho has picked it up a bunch, and I think he’ll exit the turn in first. Llyw appears to have slipped in front of Peltonen. The rest of the field is status quo.
Coming down the final straight…Peltonen is trying to match the charge from Honcho on the corner and he's really making a move. He definitely going to get by Llyw and he’s really tracking down Honcho. They approach the line and Peltonen runs out of room…Honcho holds on to win the heat with a time of 47.8, Peltonen right on his heals at 47.9. Llyw posts a strong 48.2.

Event 5 - 400 Meter - Recap
Winners
Peltonen - way outperformed his expected result
Palmiero - also out performed what was expected
Losers
No one performed extremely poorly based on expectation but if I have to name losers in this event it would be:
Jordan
Ketola
Mighty
because their times were so much slower than the field that they earned almost 100 points less than the rest of the bottom of the standings.

Overall Standings Analysis
So at the end of the first day we are already starting to see the shuffling that was mentioned after the high jump. Peltonen's excellent effort in the 400 moves him up from 6th to 2nd. Chilton also climbs into the top three.
Nielsen, Ketola, and Jordan all suffered after (expected) poor results in the 400. Babson was able to perform well enough to maintain his approximately 100 point lead.
Some changes in the middle of the pack as well...the bottom remains unchanged.

Lane 2 – Ketola
Lane 3 – Babson
Lane 4 – Nielsen
Lane 5 – Honcho
Lane 6 – Jordan
Lane 7 – Mighty
Lane 8 – Rambis
Lane 9 – Schaplowsky
The runners are ready and they are off with the gun…Mighty got a great start as he and Schaplosky seem to have the early lead.
Oh…Honcho clipped the very first hurdle, which caused him to stumble, going to be hard to get his speed back up now. Schaplowsky is looking smooth through the middle of the course. Mighty is working to stay with him. Behind Mighty it is pretty tightly bunched…Rambis, Ketola, and Babson are stride for stride, with Nielsen on their heals. Jordan is in 7th and Honcho is still trying to find his stride after his early mistake.
Unless he trips on one of the last couple hurdles Schaplowsky will win this heat, and Mighty will be behind him. The rest are still too close to call…but Babson has started clipping hurdles…he’s hit 3 in a row and it’s cost him some speed. Rambis currently has a slight lead on Ketola, but he’s obviously hurting. Jordan is starting to close on Babson, having already passed Nielsen.
Schaplowsky does win.
Mighty second.
Third is too tough to call. Ketola closed hard on Rambis, but I couldn’t tell at the line.
Jordan charges to the line, but he doesn’t quite catch Babson…
Nielsen is 7th, and Honcho brings up the rear.
Official times…

Lane 6 – Bafou

I expect this heat will be much faster than the first…
At the start it already is, as all but Llyw get out of the blocks quickly.
Through the first hurdles things are tight, but Peltonen, Ginsberg, and Chilton appear to be hitting their stride better than the rest, and not surprisingly Llyw seems to be off a bit, having to chop his steps coming into his jumps…which is preventing him from getting any real speed.
At the halfway point, Ginsberg looks to be establishing himself, exploding off each jump and starting to pull away from this fast field. Bafou has hit a hurdle hard and it cost him a good bit of time.
As we come to the finish, Ginsberg is looking phenomenal. Chilton and Peltonen are neck and neck with Palmiero trying to close but seemingly unable to. Path has had a solid run, and has passed Bafou. Llyw seems content to just finish at this point.
Ginsberg wins it going away.
It’s close for second but Chilton’s lean seems to give him second.
Peltonen has a great run for 3rd.
Palmiero comes across next followed by Path about a half stride back. Bafou and Llyw round out the field.

Event 6 - Hurdles - Event Recap
Lot's of extremes in this one:
Winners
Nielsen – rolled the best result in the column (only 4 results better in the allout column and they were no more than .1 better)
Ketola – only 2 rolls better in the entire colum
Peltonen – only the low end 13.6 was lower in the column
Losers
Honcho – hit the worst outcome in the column…
Palmiero – only 1 roll worse in the column, plus several competitors around him in the standings outperformed their expectations and actually beat Palmiero head up.
Llyw – hit one of the three 15.2s in the column, the worst outcome possible
Interesting
Babson – had he stayed at conservative he would have hit the only row in the event where the fastest time was in the conservative column, and his time would have improved by .25 seconds.

Chilton and Peltonen have built on their move up the standings by closing in on Babson, cutting his 100 point lead in half. Nielsen, though he performed well in the hurdles, slid further back, but he has several strong events coming up so don't count him out yet.
The middle jumbled a bit with Llyw dropping several places and Palmiero leapfrogging Path. While at the bottom of the standings Ginsberg made a nice move with his strong event, and Schaplowsky closed the gap on several athletes in front of him.

Event 7 - Discus - First Atttempt
Schaplowsky – he spins, tosses, and it’s a nice start. His throw measures in at 183 feet, so just over his typical average attempt, now he can work on improving with his next two tosses. I count 10 of the 27 results in the average column that are better, including several on very reasonable rolls. I also count 13 of 20 results that are better in the allout column.
Babson – one of the favorites in this event, looking for a good score to open up his overall lead, and his first toss is a good one…190 feet on the nose. That’s about average for him as well. Will be interesting to see if he takes his next couple of attempts. Every other time he’s gotten a good start, he’s rested, is this one good enough? I count 13 of 27 rolls better than your current score, but 8 are rare rolls…7 rolls are over 200 feet. Only 5 results in the allout column are lower.
Llyw – his first throw, like the two before him are about dead on his average attempt. He records a distance of 164 feet. About dead on average in the allout column, 5 of 20 outcomes are lower in allout.
Path – Path takes his first attempt, and it looks like he stands up and comes out of the spin a little early…this results in a poor throw measuring only 173 feet. Lower end result…Only 4 rolls lower in average column
Ginsberg – His first effort looks like it is going to be a really good one to build on…It lands out around the 160 foot line. The measure is announced at 159, that’s well over his typical result, so a nice start in the event for David. I count only 4 results better in the average column, a 163 on an extremely rare roll of 10 and 3 160 foot distances. I count 11 of 20 results better in allout.
Bafou – wow…big throw here. He was a bit late with the release so the discus is hugging the foul line…it lands…fair – no white flag. We’ll have to wait on the distance but he’s clearly pleased…it measures in at 181 feet. Only the max score of 183 is better in the average column. In allout I only count 5 results better, 4 of which are not likely to be rolled.
Palmiero – here’s another good attempt…Palmiero is also smiling, knowing he’s got a good starting point to work from. The throw is 183 feet. Still 11 results better in the column, including some on very possible rolls. 7 of 20 rolls are shorter in the allout column.
Nielsen – Nielsen, spins, throws, and he’s off balance…he steps on the toe board and we have our first foul of the event.
Ketola – he follows Nielsen’s lead and ends up with the white flag raised. Second consecutive foul in the event.
Honcho – an OK start for Honcho…toss lands just under 190…officially the distance is 187. About 60% of the results in the ave column are better…some much better. Only 5 results out of 20 worse in allout.
Mighty – On the board with a throw of 150’. 14 rolls better in ave (6 of them in the teens so low probability), 15 out of 20 results better in allout.
Chilton – Form is sloppy…and the rotation is a slow because of that. Of course this leads to a less than satisfying effort on Chilton’s part. The throw only measures 140’. Only 2 results shorter in average.
Rambis – This is going to be a good score to build off of. The toss is very good…maybe slightly higher than he wanted but the distance is still 181 feet. 9 results still better in average and 12 of 20 better in allout.
Jordan – Throw of 163 feet is almost dead on his typical result. Looks like just under half the results in the average column are still better.
Peltonen - didn’t make a good pass, looked like he was going to foul by hitting the toe board, which may have been the cause for the awkward form…but regardless the toss is only 152 feet, well off even his average attempt. This is the second shortest throw on the average column.

Event 7 – Discus – Second Attempt
Schaplowsky – Mike takes his second turn, hoping to improve on his solid start. He spins, tosses, his toe hits the board hard and he falls over. He grabs his ankle…he gets up and limps off, but it looks like he’s got a sprain…not sure how severe or how much it’s going to hinder him moving forward, but that’s unfortunate, as we are right in the middle of his run of strong events.
Babson – during his throw, the release is early and the discus lands just outside of the field boundry.
Llyw – really ups the effort level for this one, but increased effort leads to off balance release which leads to stepping over the toe board and fouling.
Path – This second attempt for Path is much more explosive, creating a stronger angle…this is going to be a huge improvement over his first attempt. The discus lands and the distance is measured at 182 feet. This is much better than the first toss, but he’s got better results on his resume. I still count 11 results better in the average column and 13 in the allout.
Ginsberg – Passes
Bafou – Passes
Palmiero – really goes after his second attempt…but he comes out of his crouch a little early, lifts to much on the throw and ends up about 10’ short of his previous effort. 174’ is the result.
Nielsen – Nielsen, still looking to get on the board…he sends his second discus down the field, this one is carrying well…it’s going to be a good throw. It bounces and the spot is marked. It measures in at 192’. Only 3 results better in ave and half are better in allout (but many of those are low probability rolls).
Ketola – as he takes his second turn, he spins, tosses, hits the toe board, and grabs his side. Not sure what happened there, but he appears to be in some pain…and to add insult to injury – quite literally, he now heads into his final throw without a score on record.
Honcho – Unleashes his second throw…this is going to be a huge improvement…it’s got a chance to get over 200 feet. We’ll have to wait on the official measurement…and it is over 200…it’s 201 to be exact. Six throws better (including two 210s and one 212) in ave, and 13 better in allout.
Mighty – Just barely brushes the toe board, but the white flag was raised, so no result in round 2.
Chilton – Form is sloppy again…I’m not sure this throw is going to be an improvement over his last attempt. The measurement is posted and it is an improvement, this toss was 143 feet. The improvement is so slight from the first attempt that the explanation on where you stand is almost exactly the same.
Rambis – His second attempt is good, but not an improvement – 174’
Jordan – Second attempt comes up just a few feet short of his first – 159’
Peltonen - again, Peltonen’s form looks off…in fact, the toss is very similar to the previous one all the way around, form, release, distance…this one actually measures in a little shorter at 150 feet . OK, so this is the worst possible outcome in the column…

Event 7 – Discus – Final Attempt
Schaplowsky – Is still nursing his injury and has elected to pass in order to receive some additional treatment prior to the Pole Vault
Babson – Takes his 3rd attempt, and steps on the toe board for his second straight foul. He’ll finish up with his first 190’ result
Llyw – Almost an instant replay of his previous attempt…touches the toe board and fouls
Path – The third attempt for Path, he’s looking for another improvement and really going after the toss, but as is often the case, the extra effort created a flaw in form and resulted in a foul.
Ginsberg – not surprisingly Ginsberg passes again
Bafou – also passes again
Palmiero – a third straight pass
Nielsen – Following his strong second attempt, Nielsen elects to rest rather than try for a better result, so 4 in a row…
Ketola – the focus on getting something legal on this attempt is obvious, and the mechanical almost robotic form illustrates his desire to insure he’d not leave this event without some points. All in all his final toss of 174 feet is pretty good…considering the injury and his focus on scoring. In fact with a little more effort he probably could have topped 190 even with that approach to the toss.
Honcho – His third attempt is a good one, but it isn’t close to his big throw in the second round. Actually it measures the exact same 187’ mark he posted with his first attempt.
Mighty – Form was really textbook on this attempt, unfortunately he only managed to toss the discus about 139 feet so that isn’t going to help. I have a feeling had he gone all out and really upped his effort while maintaining that form he might have challenged his personal best
Chilton – sloppy form finally resulted in a foul
Rambis – Oh, a good toss from Rambis on his last attempt…not sure if it is going to be better than his 181’ toss in the first round…it’ll be close…ohhhh…this one is 180’…so no improvement but a great effort
Jordan – Nice throw of 171’ on his 3rd throw.
Peltonen - after two pretty pitiful throws…Peltonen unleashes a good on…this one lands out around 175’…that’s a huge improvement over his 150’ efforts previously. The official distance is 175’…Peltonen steps up big when he needed to.

Standings Overview - After 7 Events
Babson's 3rd place finish in the Discus allowed him to significantly open his overall lead. He's now up by almost 150 points. However, the most significant impact from the last event didn't even change the leaderboard at all - Ketola who was 4th coming into the discus and remains 4th after the event, his injury will most likely prevent him from medalling. It isn't impossible, but the final 3 events aren't his best and the injury will only magnify that fact.
Nielsen's nice throw moved him back into a medal position, but there are still several other contenders, with Chilton, Palmiero, Path, and Jordan all still hanging tough.
With Schaplowsky and Rambis both hurt, it won't suprise me if Llyw, Ginsberg and Bafou don't make a run at them before this is all said and done.

Event 8 - Pole Vault - Game Mechanics
The mechanics of this event are similar to the high jump. You jump until you get 3 straight misses (regardless of height) or you elect to stop. You get 7 jumps without any fatigue penalities. If you passed at all in the discus, you may use that turn in the pole vault without penalty. If you were one of the one that rolled over your rest from the first day you may use those extra attempts here without penalty as well.
However, unlike high jump where you enter at a height and the bar increase by 1" each time...here it will start at 12' 1" and increase by 4" each time...

Honcho – Actually goes under the bar his so far off…

Ginsberg – Pass
Bafou – strains hard to generate leverage…he hits the bar and coming out of the pit, he’s grabbing his lower back. Looks like he might have pulled something.
Peltonen – clears this height with room to spare
Honcho – goes for his second attempt…he’s up, the pole bends…and I don’t mean flexs…it bent…he come crashing down hard on the edge of the cushion…that was ugly and scary. The trainers are tending to him. They help him out of the pit and he’s headed into the locker room…we’ll have to wait and see how bad he’s hurt.
Obviously the wear and tear of this meet is taking its toll as the injuries are starting to pile up.
Honcho – after getting his maximum time allotted for injury treatment Honcho is out to try again…he’s clearly banged up as his speed down the runway is not where it was on his first two attempts – that can’t help. He plants and really strains his muscles to get up – and – OVER! He cleared…
Bafou – on his second attempt he clears the bar, but his back is definitely bothering him…we’ll have to see how much it impacts him performance moving forward.

Path – Good again, still a whole foot to spare
Schaplowsky – clears is easily yet again…he’s jumping well right now…
Bafou – up and over – no problem

14.9
Babson – Pass
Nielsen – he brushes the bar as he lets go of the pole just a tad late…it bounces…and stays up…
Llyw – jump looks like the previous one, only this time that isn’t going to be good enough to clear
Path – much better this time, as he’s easily over this height
Bafou- he clears once again…so other than the miss caused by the injury, he’s really been soaring – with 5 straight clears
Schaplowsky – 14.9 is also cleared…
Jordan – misses badly…clips the bar with his toe going up
Peltonen – this time he clips the bar with his knee going over…
Ketola – not able to clear
Mighty – Pass
Honcho - is able to just slip over the bar
Llyw – his next attempt is almost a carbon copy of the last two…and he misses again
Jordan – second chance…he hits the bar with his chest as he’s decending…the bar bounces – and falls
Peltonen – just barely brushes the bar on the way over…it wobbles, but stays up
Ketola – again he doesn’t clear –it’s close but he can’t quite get over the bar, wonder if the injury is holding him back
Llyw – gives it a 3rd try, and this time he’s no where close…
Jordan – again, he’s up, over the bar – brushes it on the way down…it’s bouncing, bouncing and it – Falls…so Jordan is finished
Ketola – misses for the 3rd straight time and Ketola is finished in this event.

Babson – Pass
Nielsen – Pass
Honcho – gives this height a try as well…he lumbers down the runway, plants the pole he’s up…and - he just rides it back down to the ground. Looks like that one was pretty painful so he packed it in rather than over-exert himself.
Path – just slips over the bar to clear again…
Bafou – just slips over the bar – 6 straight makes…
Schaplowsky – 6 straight with no misses…
Peltonen – a nice job of body control allows Peltonen to contort his way over the bar
Mighty – another solid looking attempt clears the bar
Honcho – waves off his next attempt and he’s finished with the Pole Vault
Honcho clears 14’ 9”

Babson – takes his second turn, and hits the bar with his thigh going over the bar for a miss
Nielsen – Misses…late to get body in position so hits the bar early in the attempt.
Schaplowsky – 7 jumps no misses…as hot as he is - it’ll be interesting to see if he keeps going and risks getting worn out
Rambis – jumps into the event barely clearing 15.5, almost went a little too conservative there.
Peltonen – trys 15.5, but comes up well short…
Chilton – misses his opening attempt
Bafou – he goes for 15’ 5” and comes up well short…in fact he’s under the bar
Mighty –Mighty appears to be on a roll…that’s 3 straight
Path – waves off the rest of his attempts as he retires from the event
Babson – Second try at this height is much better as he’s easily over
Nielsen – miss – second straight miss…this one was close, but couldn’t quite finish the jump.
Chilton – misses his second attempt…now he heads into his 3rd and final attempt with no height on record.
Bafou – again he knows early he isn’t going to get it, so he ducks under the bar for the second straight time
Peltonen – he also retires from the event at this point
Nielsen – Cleared by a hair.
Chilton – just clears the bar
Bafou – is the 3rd competitor to decide to pack it in for this event at this height
Path clears 15’ 1”

Schaplowsky – Hard to believe this guy in injured with these results….he clears yet again…
Chilton – misses again…something seems to be off
Mighty – That’s a miss, hits the bar hard with his hip going over
Rambis – over the bar with over a foot to spare, made it look easy
Chilton – misses again – that’s 5 jumps and 4 of them have been misses, unheard of for a such a good pole vaulter
Mighty – second time is much better as he clears with room to spare
Chilton – misses yet again…this was a disaster for the UK athlete…I’m sure based on his location in the standings and the fact this is one of his better events, he was planning to use this event to strengthen his case for a medal, but this effort isn’t going to get that accomplished
Chilton clears 15’ 5”

Mighty – Another clear for Mighty…
Rambis – another easy effort

Schaplowsky – that was not a good attempt…not sure if he’s getting tired, or just felt off on that approach but he records his first miss.
Mighty – takes an attempt here…and he clips the bar with his hip
Rambis – continues to be hot clearing the bar without any concern
Babson – Just barely knocks the bar off on the way over
Schaplowsky – decides to go again…and again it’s not the same as his previous efforts…he’s short on his lift and he knocks the bar off early.
Mighty – resigns from any further attempts
Babson – 3rd straight miss and Babson’s event is over.
Schaplowsky – waives off his next chance

Palmiero – On his turn, Palmiero is up and he clears the bar…there was no question about that one…he had a little room to spare. So he’s done 5 jumps, cleared 17.1 and he’s still going.
Rambis – misses for the first time…it was close but just couldn’t quite swim himself over cleanly

Event 8 - Pole Vault - Recap
Winners
Palmiero - yes there were probably other winners, but Palmiero's effort was more than a foot better than every other athlete, and even more importantly was over 2.5 feet better than those around him in the overall standings
Losers
Bafou - while not in the running for a medal, this injury will most likely prevent him from moving any higher in the standings

Current Standings Overview
With only 2 events left things are starting to tighten up in several places...
Palmiero's excellent effort in the Pole Vault has catapulted him from 5th to 2nd. Currently, it looks like a 4 way fight between Babson, Palmiero, Nielsen, and Peltonen for the top 3 spots. It will be interesting to see how this plays out knowing that Babson and Palmiero aren't as strong in the last two events as Peltonen and Nielsen are.
Like the top 4, we have a tight bunching of athletes from 5th to 10th. Looking at the remaining events, injuries, stamina, etc., I expect that Ketola will continue to slide down the leaderboard. In fact, with his injury, he may find himself at the bottom of that second group before all is said and done. On the other hand Path looks to be sitting pretty in his group, poised for a strong finish. Will it be strong enough to challenge for 3rd, I'm not sure.
Two competitors, Llyw and Bafou, at the bottom of the standings have a couple of strong events coming up, so they could climb a bit...assuming the injury doesn't hinder Bafou too badly.

Event 9 – Javelin – First Attempt
Path – looking to make his move up the board, hoping for a big result here…the strange Russian starts the event off…he’s heading down the runway, plants and launches…it’s a perfect angle…the throw is sailing, sailing, sailing…this is going to be huge….it sticks and it’s measured at 275 Feet…This is the top result in the average column…in fact there are only 2 rolls better in allout – a 293 on the 29 which is rare and a 284 on the 13 which is even rarer
Rambis – the hamstring appears to be bothering Rambis right now…he’s not got the spring in his step we normally see in this event…he make a good pass and ends up with a toss of 179 feet…I’d say given the injury that’s about average for him. This result is about dead middle of the average column
Llyw – this is an event where Llyw can do well and maybe climb into the middle of the pack…and he must know it because he uncorks a good one…this one is long…it measures 260 feet. Only 1 result better in the average column a 266 on 15 which is rare, only 4 results better in allout, all are rare results but they include distances of 282, 264, 269, and 275
Schaplowsky – Hoping to continue his strong run, and his move up the leaderboard, Schaplowsky gets too aggressive on his approach to the line and his momentum carries him over for a foul.
Nielsen – the athlete currently in bronze medal position takes his turn…he rushes to the line…throws…and bounce across the white line for a foul. He’s also grabbing his ribs – that looks like a pulled muscle to me…yes unfortunately you are injured
Peltonen – is also over the line…3rd straight foul
Ginsberg – unfortunately, he keeps the string of fouls going…
Mighty – his first throw is a pretty good one…as he works hard trying to reverse his momentum to keep from crossing the white line…the throw measures in at 193 feet…probably lost a bit of distance because he had to work so hard to keep from fouling. 10 results are still better in the average column, and only 5 of 12 are worse in allout
Chilton – approaches and throws…this is a good one…the toss is going well beyond his typical distance of 195 feet…well beyond…it sticks and is measured at 231 feet. That’s a big throw probably one of his 2 or 3 best throws ever. There are only 2 throws better in allout…a 232 and a 242 both very rare rolls. There is also a 233 in average and it has a decent chance of being rolled.
Palmiero – hoping to keep his momentum going, really goes after his first attempt, but his momentum pulls him over the line and he fouls.
Babson – looking for a good event, to really provide some cushion heading into the 1500…he makes a very good first attempt…the throw is 212 feet. 5 results better in average and only 5 results are shorter in allout
Honcho – his throw is up…and it looks like an instant replay of Babson’s attempt. Same trajectory, same basic speed…and after the measurement – it is the same 212 8 results are still better in the average column, all but 2 results are better in the allout
Ketola – misjudges his approach, crosses the throw line and fouls
Jordan – does the same thing as Ketola
Bafou – this is almost laughable…Bafou really went after his attempt and he didn’t seem to learn from the mistakes of Ketola and Jordan before him…he’s over the foul line too.

Event 9 – Javelin – Second Attempt
Path – As expected Path passes
Rambis – hamstring appeared to bother Rambis in the last throw…this time it brought him to his knees…not sure if it was the actual throw or him trying to stop his momentum so he wouldn’t foul (which he wasn’t able to do)…but whatever it was - he definitely aggravated his injury…
Llyw – with a good score to work from…Llyw really goes after this second attempt, and he’s uncorked another good one…it flys way down the field and sticks right at the 260 mark…not sure if it’s an improvement…the measurement say – 259…so close…
Schaplowsky – second attempt looks a lot like the first…good throw, but it won’t count as he’s over the foul line.
Nielsen – not sure if he was focused on his injury, or his need to fight through the pain to get a good throw in order to hold onto his medal position, but Nielsen crossed the foul line again…he now heads into his final attempt without having a score on record.
Peltonen – His second attempt is going to make him happy… Distance measures 231…this will keep Peltonen in the hunt for a medal. 3 results better in average but the best of those 3 is a 235 (which is on a reasonable probability roll). In allout 9 results are still better including several above 250
Ginsberg – he responds to his foul in the first round with a big result in the second. The toss was a very strong 241’. 2 results better in average, a 243 which is rare, and a 262 which is extremely rare, In allout 12 results are still better including 8 over 250’ and 4 of those are over 260’
Mighty – his second attempt isn’t going to challenge the distance of his first…it lands about 10’ shorter…183.
Chilton – passes
Palmiero – this second throw is going to keep his momentum going…in fact, this throw looks very similar to a couple we’ve had already…distance measures 231 – yep that’s a measurement we’ve heard a couple of times before. top result in the ave column, and only a 236 and a 237 in the allout are better and both are rare probability rolls
Babson – after seeing Palmiero and Peltonen uncork big throws…Babson really picked up his efforts…everything looked good, but apparently his increased efforts led to him tightening up on the throw rather than relaxing and getting the good snap at the release so his distance wasn’t as good as his first attempt – 189’
Honcho – takes his second turn and on his release he screams in pain as he must have tweaked whatever he hurt in the pole vault because he collapses in pain…again he is escorted into the locker room for treatment. Also, apparently when he fell to the ground he crossed the white line, so the throw doesn’t count.
Ketola – gets one in the grid…at 192 feet…11 results still better in average, and only 5 results shorter in allout
Jordan – Wanting to make sure he gets a throw in, he launches the Javelin way before the foul line and costs himself several feet on the distance. In fact, his throw only managed to travel 180’ worest throw in the column
Bafou – second attempt is textbook…he seemed to be focused on form or else the throw might have been even longer, but as it was , he’s still on the board at 196’ you hit the second shortest result in the column

Event 9 – Javelin – Final Attempt
Path – As expected Path passes
Rambis – passes
Llyw – passes
Schaplowsky – a very conservative effort from Schaplowsky will get him on the board. His distance of 196’ is pretty good considering he had to get a clean result.
Nielsen – clearly throwing caution to the wind…the Dane charges the line on his throw, refusing to go conservative to insure a score…and it may have paid off…this is a pretty good attempt. It measures at 211’…which under the circumstances is nothing to sneeze at…he’ll lose some ground to the other leaders, but this will keep him in contention for a medal.
Peltonen – really goes after his final attempt trying to improve on an already impressive 231’ throw. Unfortunately, he crosses the line and the white flag is raised.
Ginsberg – elects not to just sit on his very impressive throw of 241 and instead, is really going after his 3rd and final attempt…and it looks really good early – it has a long way to go…but it has a chance…wow…this throw is well beyond his previous attempt. In fact, I think this one is going to challenge Path’s 275’ effort which leads the event. It is measured and the official distance is 269’
Mighty – throws a good one, but the point didn’t stick, so the throw doesn’t count.
Chilton – passes
Palmiero – passes
Babson – trying to get better than his 212’ result in the first throw, Babson waits late to release to maximize distance and he crosses the foul line.
Honcho – his third turn, it’s painfully obvious that Honcho is battling through for pride. He’s clearly not 100%, in fact, his continuing to participate at this point is just a tribute to his toughness. He gets a decent throw off…it lands at 193’ short of his first go around…but no telling how good it might have been if he wasn’t so banged up.
Ketola – this one is looking a lot like the last one….in fact, it’s exactly like the last one…192’
Jordan – He’s able to improve on his previous best with his last attempt, recording a throw of 212.
Bafou – unable to stay behind the white line on the last attempt leads to another foul

Current Standings Overview
With only 1 event remaining, we've got a real battle for all of the medal spots. Palmiero's strong second day has now seen him move into the overall lead, but Babson is only a couple of points behind, and Path has made a serious move. Peltonen is still in play, and Nielsen is typically good at the 1500 so if he can work through the pain of his injury he still might find himself on the podium.
The middle of the leaderboard could also see some juggling before all is said and done with 7 competitors falling between 7895 and 8159...

would love to finish this before the holiday, but even if I could quickly post the card review for each athlete, I doubt the responses would be quick enough to run the event and post the results. So I'll post the breakdown for the 1500 on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Event 10 - 1500 Meters - Preview
Favorites
None - Honcho is typically the best at this event, but he's currently dealing with an injury that he just aggrevated, which is going to significantly hinder his performance here. Of the rest of the athletes, Nielsen, is pretty good here, but also dealing with an injury. Bafou and Llyw will be looking to climb, and Path is the lone medal contender that is uninjured and considered good at this event

This event runs like the 400 Meters, in that that race is divided into segments. In this case we have five 300 Meter segments, so I'll need 5 announced effort levels.
