NHL draft Day(s) thread

Post trades and picks as you hear them.

Leafs trade a 3rd rounder for Jamal Meyers.

Let's rebuild with 33 year old checkers...Yeah Cliffy, stay the course.

Pyser 06-20-2008 12:19 PM

The draft doesn't start for another 4 and a half hours.

Deal.

Dr. Sak 06-20-2008 01:51 PM

Drink one every time Pierre McGuire says something stupid. I bet you pass out by the 3rd pick.

Maple Leafs 06-20-2008 02:15 PM

Take one drink every time some GM or scout at the podium thanks Ottawa for hosting, and congratulates the Wings for winning the Cup.

It will be an early night for you.

Logan 06-20-2008 02:21 PM

Take one drink every time you hear "or-gan-EYE-za-tion."

Dr. Sak 06-20-2008 02:23 PM

Or Aboot

samifan24 06-20-2008 02:33 PM

Doesn't it seem kind of odd that the NHL Draft is scheduled at 7 PM on a Friday night?

Greyroofoo 06-20-2008 02:33 PM

eh?

Reread your question...remember who the commissioner is...the answer should come to you.

DeToxRox 06-20-2008 02:42 PM

If Goodell got his way, the NFL Draft first round will be on a Friday night.

Maple Leafs 06-20-2008 02:44 PM

This might get interesting:

Habs get permission to talk to Sundin's agent

Maple Leafs 06-20-2008 03:37 PM

CKAC Montreal radio reporting Habs have traded 1st round pick.

No word on where, but you can guess what the speculation is.

DeToxRox 06-20-2008 03:41 PM

Oh man. Drama. I love it.

bbor 06-20-2008 03:43 PM

Why would the Habs give up a 1st rounder for a UFA?

Or am i missing something?

Trading for his rights so they can sign him prior to him becoming a UFA on July 1st.

Edit to add: Would seem like an overpayment if this is the case, but I have full faith the Leafs will in turn trade that pick for the rights to Jiri Dopita or something along those lines.

bbor 06-20-2008 03:49 PM

Hrm..can't see a 1st being involved.I would say a 3rd at best.

Dr. Sak 06-20-2008 03:52 PM

Toronto to take Montreal's 25th and their 7th to get Pick # 3

Maple Leafs 06-20-2008 04:10 PM

Definitely seems like a high price, even if Mats is signed and sealed.

If Fletcher can get a first for Mats right now, he's a genius.

RomaGoth 06-20-2008 04:36 PM

Blockbuster Norris Division deal:

Blues acquire Chris Mason from Predators for a 4th round pick.

I am also curious as to why ESPN has a love affair with Mats Sundin? For a guy who has never won anything he sure gets a lot of love from that network.

Tekneek 06-20-2008 05:12 PM

I thought this was going to be streaming from nhl.com. Is that not the case?

Tekneek 06-20-2008 05:21 PM

Audio only from nhl.com and tsn.ca's video feed is for Canada only.

Tekneek 06-20-2008 05:22 PM

Doh... video at nhl.com

Arctic Blast 06-20-2008 06:00 PM

Good lord! Evgeni Malkin offered 12.5 million A YEAR to play in the Russian Superleague.

Coder 06-20-2008 06:02 PM

Tanguay to Montreal for the 25th? No confirmation yet according to TSN.ca though

Arctic Blast 06-20-2008 06:11 PM

To Calgary : Mike Cammellerri
To Anaheim : 17th and 28th picks
To LA : 12th pick

Also,

Tanguay for 25th is official.

MrBug708 06-20-2008 06:12 PM

Kings pick up the #12 pick for Mike Cammalari

Arctic Blast 06-20-2008 06:19 PM

To Phoenix - Olli Jokinen
To Florida - Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton.

This would seem to indicated Bouwmeester could be moved, with 2 D-men coming back.

Pyser 06-20-2008 06:20 PM

this is exactly why the kings are fucking trash.

if you believe the rumor, they could have had malkin for cammellerri and the #2. instead they trade a guy 1 year past an 80 point season on a crap team for a prospect.

Logan 06-20-2008 06:23 PM

Off the top of my head, I can't think too far back...but just from TSN's flash of past #1 picks, the NHL might have the best track record when it comes to top overall picks turning into superstars.

Arctic Blast 06-20-2008 06:23 PM

Dude, they were never getting Malkin...that rumor was insane. Keep in mind, they have 2 high picks now, so they could make a move for a player.

They've got some good, young talent...they DESPERATELY need a goaltender.

Pyser 06-20-2008 06:26 PM

jokinen cannot be happy finally getting away from a team who never makes the playoffs....and ending up in phoenix.

wasnt cammellerri part of that good young talent?

Hmmm...you'd probably have to go back to Daigle and Berard.

Wow...LA update, they have 10 PICKS in the first 4 rounds...in a deep draft, that's FANTASTIC for a rebuilding team. And I still think they'll swing some of them for a player or two.

Keep in mind, he's a UFA after this year. If he bounces back, and has a boom season like he had a couple years ago, he's going to be in line for BIG dollars, probably more than he's worth.

I dont think they want to commit the money for Malkin right now. They know they are going to be bad for a while.

Pyser 06-20-2008 06:34 PM

jesus. if you dont want to pay a 20 year old who came in 2nd in league scoring, who do you pay???

Daigle was the first guy I thought of (1993?). That's pretty impressive if you have to go back 15 years to find a bust.

But Berard was, at worst, a top 4 d-man before his injury, no? Maybe not a stud but if that's how we're defining a bust, again, the NHL is looking pretty good.

edit: Stefan in 1999 is probably the worst since Daigle.

Geez, I forgot all about Patrick Stefan...not that it was hard to forget him. :D

Pyser : Again, I don't think the Malkin trade was a real possibility (just like I suspect his agent publicized the Russian league offer to point out to the Pens that they better pay up). And it doesn't make sense for LA to pony up massive dollars for one guy...they're still building. And Malkin wouldn't help their awful goaltending situation, anyway.

Maple Leafs 06-20-2008 06:46 PM

That seems low for Jokinnen, doesn't it?

Cammeleri too.

Pyser 06-20-2008 06:47 PM

arctic, complain about the kings goalie situation all you want. everyone here does.

doesnt mean its been fixed in 10 years of complaining, though.

The Flames also sent forward Alex Tanguay and their 5th round pick this season to the Montreal Canadiens for 25th overall pick and their 2nd round pick next season.

Arctic Blast 06-20-2008 06:51 PM

Maple Leafs : Florida also got a 2nd rounder in that deal. Maybe a bit of a surprise, yeah, but Ballard is a pretty nice player. Boynton's a spare part, though, at least I think so.

Pyser : Yeah, it has been awhile, hasn't it? Is Bernier looking like he could be the real deal?

And, finally, my God...let's have the NHL go the NFL route, and the commissioner just makes the pick and trade announcement, rather than these neverending blathering speeches from team reps! :banghead:

Travis 06-20-2008 06:54 PM

Very disappointed in Lowe if that's all Phoenix had to give up for Olli given the pieces Edmonton has available to move right now.

Maple Leafs 06-20-2008 06:54 PM

Leafs and Isles swap picks.

Keep in mind that Edmonton doesn't have a pick in rounds 2 or 3. Maybe they did make an offer, but Phoenix's throwing in one of their 773 picks, one they KNEW Edmonton couldn't match, sealed it.

Danny 06-20-2008 06:57 PM

Cammellerri was gone after the season anyway, but seems like they could have done a touch better for him.
