The draft doesn't start for another 4 and a half hours.

Deal.

Drink one every time Pierre McGuire says something stupid. I bet you pass out by the 3rd pick.

Take one drink every time some GM or scout at the podium thanks Ottawa for hosting, and congratulates the Wings for winning the Cup.

It will be an early night for you.

Doesn't it seem kind of odd that the NHL Draft is scheduled at 7 PM on a Friday night?

Reread your question...remember who the commissioner is...the answer should come to you.

CKAC Montreal radio reporting Habs have traded 1st round pick.

No word on where, but you can guess what the speculation is.

Why would the Habs give up a 1st rounder for a UFA?

Or am i missing something?

Trading for his rights so they can sign him prior to him becoming a UFA on July 1st.

Edit to add: Would seem like an overpayment if this is the case, but I have full faith the Leafs will in turn trade that pick for the rights to Jiri Dopita or something along those lines.

Definitely seems like a high price, even if Mats is signed and sealed.

If Fletcher can get a first for Mats right now, he's a genius.

Blockbuster Norris Division deal:

Blues acquire Chris Mason from Predators for a 4th round pick.

I am also curious as to why ESPN has a love affair with Mats Sundin? For a guy who has never won anything he sure gets a lot of love from that network.

To Phoenix - Olli Jokinen
To Florida - Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton.

This would seem to indicated Bouwmeester could be moved, with 2 D-men coming back.

this is exactly why the kings are fucking trash.

if you believe the rumor, they could have had malkin for cammellerri and the #2. instead they trade a guy 1 year past an 80 point season on a crap team for a prospect.

Off the top of my head, I can't think too far back...but just from TSN's flash of past #1 picks, the NHL might have the best track record when it comes to top overall picks turning into superstars.

Dude, they were never getting Malkin...that rumor was insane. Keep in mind, they have 2 high picks now, so they could make a move for a player.

They've got some good, young talent...they DESPERATELY need a goaltender.

Hmmm...you'd probably have to go back to Daigle and Berard.

Wow...LA update, they have 10 PICKS in the first 4 rounds...in a deep draft, that's FANTASTIC for a rebuilding team. And I still think they'll swing some of them for a player or two.

Keep in mind, he's a UFA after this year. If he bounces back, and has a boom season like he had a couple years ago, he's going to be in line for BIG dollars, probably more than he's worth.

I dont think they want to commit the money for Malkin right now. They know they are going to be bad for a while.

Daigle was the first guy I thought of (1993?). That's pretty impressive if you have to go back 15 years to find a bust.

But Berard was, at worst, a top 4 d-man before his injury, no? Maybe not a stud but if that's how we're defining a bust, again, the NHL is looking pretty good.

edit: Stefan in 1999 is probably the worst since Daigle.

Geez, I forgot all about Patrick Stefan...not that it was hard to forget him.

Pyser : Again, I don't think the Malkin trade was a real possibility (just like I suspect his agent publicized the Russian league offer to point out to the Pens that they better pay up). And it doesn't make sense for LA to pony up massive dollars for one guy...they're still building. And Malkin wouldn't help their awful goaltending situation, anyway.

Maple Leafs : Florida also got a 2nd rounder in that deal. Maybe a bit of a surprise, yeah, but Ballard is a pretty nice player. Boynton's a spare part, though, at least I think so.

Pyser : Yeah, it has been awhile, hasn't it? Is Bernier looking like he could be the real deal?

And, finally, my God...let's have the NHL go the NFL route, and the commissioner just makes the pick and trade announcement, rather than these neverending blathering speeches from team reps!

Very disappointed in Lowe if that's all Phoenix had to give up for Olli given the pieces Edmonton has available to move right now.

Keep in mind that Edmonton doesn't have a pick in rounds 2 or 3. Maybe they did make an offer, but Phoenix's throwing in one of their 773 picks, one they KNEW Edmonton couldn't match, sealed it.
