From what I'm reading so far, I'm not exactly blown away by the tech. The live streaming combined with remote "desktop" control capabilities and a built-in microphone on the controller will have Sony hoping they don't get user's credentials hacked again....

I would expect this gen is going to be more about the software than hardware.

I'm not listening to the live stream or anything but yeah, I would think they would look to move it further away from being a straight "game console". There's lots of cool things that a PS3 can do already outside of play games, but they can definitely mesh and improve on them a great deal more.

They should have known better than putting Jonathan Blow and David Cage back to back.

New PS4 A PC: RPS DECLARES VICTORY | Rock, Paper, Shotgun

Though from a serious point of view, with the PS4 having having similar architecture to the PC (and the next XBOX expected to as well) I'm hoping that it leads to more third party developers releasing on PC as well.

Between the 4 active abilities and no health potions D3 felt like it was designed for being played with a controller.

If you're going to announce a fucking console, then at least show it.

Christ I loved Rock and Roll Racing.

And granted I'm not a console fan, that whole conference seemed pretty lame. Graphics at present day PC level and..... what? Diablo?

Rumors are Base Unit $529, stripped down unit $429. If that's the case, Sony didn't learn a damn thing from the shitkicking the PS3 took and are plunging deeper in the abyss (oh, and good to see they're throwing away one of their main advantages over XBox in locking most of the goodies behind the paywall)

I think the current console generation is my last. Getting older has moved my interests in other directions and nothing new grabs my attention.

I surely hope the concept of the $129 250gig HDD doesn't survive to this generation.

Totalbiscuit ‏@Totalbiscuit
Here's the question... will Diablo 3 for PS4 actually have a proper single player mode, or is this indicative of always-on nonsense?

Totalbiscuit ‏@Totalbiscuit
Bear in mind if it does have "true singleplayer" then it completely shoots down the whole "oh it's not DRM, it's a feature!" argument

Same here, although I know that all it will take is for 2K Sports to start leaving out features on the PS3 version in favour of the PS4 before I get the itch......

I wouldn't say they learned NOTHING. They learned $599 and $499 are untenable.

That said, I fully expect that $399 is going to be the max price point on either PlayStation 4 or Durango unless one or both parties engage in some kind of subsidy shenanigans.

I feel the same. With working a job and having to young kids, I just dont have the time. 95% of my gaming comes on my phone where I can play 5 minutes here, 15 minutes there. Thankfully there are a couple of sports text sims.

Last time at least they could point to the Blu-Ray player, which was very expensive at the time.

As some have said already, i'll buy it if the games are really better than in PS3.

I bought the PS3 on release day and it took like 1 year or 2 to have a decent lineup of games.

I personally think that we're at a plateau in terms of new generations now - the increase in graphics/performance isn't appealing enough to the vast majority of people to persuade them to upgrade to a new device unless there is another incentive.

In the 'old days' the PS-2 would come out and the improvement (and DVD playing capabilities) from the SNES was sufficient that it was a 'must have' ... the last 'must have' to hit mass market was the Wii, why - not because it had graphics/performance but because it had a new control system which seemed interesting to people.

Neither PS-4 or Durango appear to have a unique 'hook' which will appeal to enough people to turn the systems into a surefire hit - however over time I'm sure they'll build a reasonable user base, especially as new people come into the market or existing consoles are phased out/units die.

Even my kids aren't particularly excited about new consoles these days - my eldest will get a Durango because he'll want the new Halo game which will undoubtably be on it, my youngest got a Wii U for Xmas - largely because I wanted to see what it was like rather than him requesting it ... he uses it, but spends far more time playing on his GameCube than he does that.

Yeah, but as someone who was working in retail at the time, that did nothing for the PlayStation brand. It helped Sony to beat back Toshiba's HD-DVD consortium, but people were buying PS3's with no extras. No games, no accessories, just the system.

And that's how it was for nearly a year. They had to remove backwards compatibility before I was able to consistently sell PS3s with new software. I didn't have that problem with PS2, GameCube, Xbox, Xbox 360 or Wii.

Not coincidentally, all of those systems were at least a hundred bucks cheaper at launch. You might want a basket of $600+ at console launch, but if all of it is the hardware and you're still not profitable on hardware, you're hurting yourself in the long run.

If some of it is software, even if you're still in the red on the hardware you just sold, you now have a piece of software in the hands of the adopter that can be used evangelically to grow interest in the product.

I also have no interest in the next generation of systems right now. Never play the Wii, which is at my parents' house anyway, maybe twice a year play the 360.

The PS3 gets daily use, but much of that is Netflix, Hulu+, or Blu-ray watching and not so much gaming.

I will probably only buy the next xbox, but will consider a ps4 if Sony figures out how to make the updates even more frequent and slower. Love logging in and then waiting an extra painful amount of time to play.

The big thing for me will be region locking which is, crappy unreliable 360 hardware aside, the main reason I'm PS3 right now rather than 360. Not as big a deal now that we can download titles rather than buy discs, but still.

There's good news for used game fans, however. Sony Worldwide Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida put the rumors to rest in a post-show talk with Eurogamer, saying simply: "So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?"

Hmm maybe I'm reading in to it too much, but the "can" word alarms me. At the very least I think we'll see more developers go down EA's path with the "season pass" style serial code logins for new titles.

If you can really turn off any game and pick up right where you left off without any difficulties, that is a major selling point for me as my free time for long periods of console gameplay dwindles.
