BBCF: Life after the Glass Man (the first year isn't going to be pretty.)

Now that Randy has graduated and gone pro (to probably end his career on the first play that he gets in) we start a new era.

Our school administration was very disappointed that we blew the National Championship Game last year and wasted a great opportunity. You can read about Randy's 4 years here:

http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/...ad.php?t=45664

We have many holes now with graduations and two of our best young players (FS Drayton Ryan and OG Mike Batrum) leaving early. However, we were fortunate that none of our star WR's left early. This might have been a big mistake for them as we had a surprisingly hard time getting any of the top QB's to come to USC! We've lost out on at least 10 guys that we targeted. Most of them were East Coast guys, and VT and ND landed the top two QB's. LSU got the 3rd best QB in the nation and Michigan got the 4th best QB. We also lost a good QB to Arizona State (he was from Arizona) and to Oregon State (he was from Oregon.) In fact, every QB we recruited went somewhere else! We didn't get any QB's! We had 3 very raw QB's walk-on and we are really hurting if Robert Keith goes down to injury, but I don't think he is very good either. I'll be hoping for a much better QB class next year. With our holes at HB, we surprisingly lost out on the top 10 HB's to teams such as Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, and Ohio State.) We ended up adding 2 mediocre HB's and we really are taking a huge hit to our offense talent. We need a MUCH better recruiting year next year, or we could be entering a downward spiral. Really, we've had a terrible recruiting year except for along both lines and at OLB. I also lost out on a few of the tops Corners and Safeties that I went after. Washington did a great job of keeping guys from their state. Oregon State did a great job of keeping guys from their state and poached a few of the top California guys! VT did a great job on the east coast and thwarted me on my top few guys. I expect this to be a very rough year..

Here is a look at our class (we didn't fill 5 scholarships):

DT Derek Ellington, 5-stars
Pinkerton Academy (Derry, NH)
National Rank: 26, Regional: 7, Position: 6

DT Shawn Harris, 5-stars

OLB Norris Myer, 4-stars
Sonora (Sonora, CA)
National Rank: 73, Regional: 15, Position: 11

OG Byron Pickard, 4-stars
Fresno (Fresno, CA)
National Rank: 43, Regional: 11, Position: 4

National Rank: 897, Regional: 196, Position: 20

RB Sammy Dominguez, 3-stars
Boothbay Regional (Boothbay Harbor, ME)
National Rank: 241, Regional: 51, Position: 10

RB Mike Tuipala, 3-stars
Agua Fria (Avondale, AZ)
National Rank: 634, Regional: 147, Position: 36

OT David Mosley, 3-stars
Redwood (Visalia, CA)
National Rank: 438, Regional: 103, Position: 36

ILB Kevin Kapp, 3-stars
Williston (Williston, ND)
National Rank: 553, Regional: 101, Position: 35

OG Marques Steed, 3-stars
Galileo Academy (San Francisco, CA)
National Rank: 492, Regional: 115, Position: 40

We've also recently made a chance at the DC position, hiring a very good defensive coordinator from Cal that likes to run a 4-3. Shannon Noonan is known as a brilliant developer of Cornerbacks and is very good with linebackers. I expect him to help better develop the high quality talent that we have recruited the last few years that hasn't really met it's potential.

A post training camp roster look is coming soon.

I don't know how our recruiting class was 12th except that we got 4 excellent DT's.

Here is an overview of the team's schedule:

We have a very interesting choice philosophically. Our RB's aren't really good enough to move the ball, and we still have 4 amazing weapons at WR. Of course, our QB isn't going to be good enough to get the ball to them consistently. I'm going to go with a vertical passing attack as our philosophy, however, I expect our OC will want to run the ball more than last year, perhaps using our FB's as primary runners.

Defensively, I'm tempted to run a 5-2-4 with our great DT's. However, the new DC prefers a 4-3 and that is generally my preferred formation. Therefore, we will run a 4-3 and try to keep all of the DT's happy..

We request Alabama in week 3 on the road and they accept.

We request Missouri in week 15 on the road and they accept.

I don't see even one freshman that is worth redshirting. Most of them are either too good (the DT's) or too bad (everyone else just about.)

Week 1:

Depth Chart Changes:

Tony Seau is going to be our primary runing back. Liske will start at FB.

Preview:

We start out our season hosting VT. Those bastards stole several of our top recruits, and we are out for blood. They are ranked 17th. We are ranked 7th. Our scouts believe our offense's have about equal talent. Our defense is supposed to have better talent. I'm counting on our defense against their talented offense.

Gameplanning:

I want to keep things simple for Keith, but we just have too many WR's that are great not to throw it. We are certainly going to run quite a bit more than last year, but there will be more passing than running.

Defensively, we have to stop their potentially explosive passing game. We will be running a lot of nickel back formation.

Game over. 42-37.

Pros: Could Buzz actually be a good QB? Could our coaching staff have misjudged him?

Cons: Actually not many, our team played as well as I expected against a good VT offense. I didn't expect much more from Keith. The only con is that it wasn't enough and we lost.

We had a bye in week 2.

Week 3:

No one was suspended!

QB Robert Keith has an injured elbow and is questionable.

No one else is hurt.

Depth Chart Moves:

Buzz Williams takes over as our starter due to Keith's injury. Keith will be the #2.

Tony Seau returns to his starting FB role, and Sophomore James Douglas will start for us at HB.

No other changes.

Today we travel to play at Alabama. Alabama's offense is 108th and their defense is 48th. Our offense is 21st and our defense is 68th.

Alabama is led by Frank Green, an excellent senior QB who is very accurate.

Their defense is led by Leslie Longley, a Junior CB who is an elite player. He doesn't have top notch speed however, and I think our receivers could possibly burn him deep if the QB can get it there.

Our scouts think that our offense is much more talented. They think we have equal talent on defense.

The experts have made Alabama 7 point favorites!

We are using both gameplans that we used last week.

Glad to see your offense doing a little better then expected. How did UAB recruit and how is the former offensive coordinator doing? Why did you have such a hard time recruiting? Seems a little unrealistic? Does cohesion and what year you are matter? Finally, any idea when the next patch is coming out?

Go Trojans.

That's easy - 4 DT's = 40% of the total available DT talent

Go Trojans.

It was a VERY poor year for QB and RB talent in the western region. Most of the good QB's were along the east coast and unfortunately, they all wanted to remain in the east. Similarly, most of the HB's chose to remain close to home, but you would think that at least one of the top QB's and/or HB's would want to come to USC to play with all of the talent we had at WR with a sure shot at starting.

I thought that was a bit unrealistic. However, I guess I would prefer recruiting to be a bit too hard than a bit too easy. The good news is that the early looks make it look like a very good year for Californian Running backs. Most of the great QB's are in the midwest this year which is at least a bit closer to us...

I'm not sure if cohesion or what year coach I am matter. I had my best recruiting classes when I was a first year coach.

Edit to Add: I have no idea when the next patch will be out, but I'm still enjoying the game with 1.04.

My former OC at UAB didn't do quite as well with recruiting this year, but still did pretty well. So far the team is doing well:

Hehe. I only wanted to recruit 2, but DT's were the only players that seemed to really want to come play for us this year..

Week 4:

Injury Report:

Robert Keith is probable with his elbow injury. Given his fragile nature in H.S., I'll probably rest him for one more week.

RB Sammy Dominguez is questionable with a dislocated finger.

C Eric Evans is doubtful with bone chips in his elbow.

CB E.J. Evans is questionable due to a hand laceration.

Depth Chart Issues:

Donovan will move into the starting C role due to Evans injury.

No other changes.

Polls:

We are 10th in the polls. I doubt a national title game is even a chance this year, but the alumni expect a BCS bowl and anything else could be dangerous to me..

Preview:

Today we travel to play 1-2 Stanford. Their offense is 39th in the nation and is led by a potent passing attack. Tehir defense is 90th and has suffered against the pass.

Our offense is 36th and our defense is 32nd.

Our Scouts believe that our offense is about equal in talent.

They believe our defense is MUCH better.

They believe our Special Teams are slightly better.

The key matchup is their QB Craig White who is averaging 300 yards/game with 5 TD's and 2 INT's vs our pass defense which is 31st in the nation.

The odds makers are saying that it is a tossup.

Gameplanning:

We are doing the same thing offensively, but running a more balanced defense this week.
