Wonder how this would work in other sports? Corporations, products, movies, ets... all naming the teams.

Brokeback Dallas Cowboys
Little Debbie's New York Giants
Mohegan Sun Cleveland Indians or the Dell Cleveland Indians
Gorton (isn't that the fish stick one?) New York Islanders
GM Detroit Pistons
Matrix Games Arizona Cardinals (so they don't need to know anything about NFL football)
Donald Trump Trumpville Trumps (so he can have his name in there as much as possible)

All sorts of possibilities, probably much better than what I have here.

I contend that normal people don't give a flying fuck... (it's soccer...)

But teams shouldn't be allowed to name themselves after whatever city they want regardless to where they play. What's next, the baseball Giants decide to call themselves the New York Giants again even though they play in Frisco? The Brooklyn Dodgers could make a comeback too, even in LA! What's worse than teams like the Detroit Pistons, who played in Detroit but now are abot a 45 minute drive from the city are teams that were created to play somewhere and use the name of a city that they have never had anything to do with it... (Like the Detroit Shock.)

NJ officials say that they won't let the team play at Giants Stadium with its new name.

I support this. They can't do anything to do the Giants and Jets, but definately have power over the Metrostars.

I'm with you man, the Metrostars dont' do anything other than cause havoc for scheduling there. I think they can force their hands, because it'll be a horrible look for the league.

What is it with that league and alienating fan bases?

Well if they are trying to appeal to European soccer fans, more advertising is definately the way to go .
