If college football were like boxing

I put together a history of the major college football "title belt" starting with the first Rutgers/Princeton game through the end of last season.

It's safe to say that there's a method worse than the BCS for determining a champion.

Obviously scheduling would be a lot different, but I just thought it was interesting. Yes the format sucks so sorry about that.

If college football were like boxing there would be no good Division 1-A programs (no heavyweights).

I am thrilled that ASU and UofA each have won the belt 3 times. At this point they have more titles than Batiata and Randy Orton combined.

That's pretty neat. I think that could actually work reasonably well -- maybe an upset would make a lame team the national champion for a while, but eventually the ship would get righted, and a better team would have it. It would take away the whole idea of a 'season' but it's still interesting.

The Pac-10 and Big 10 dominate the number of reigns. This is mainly due, IMO, to their tendency to not only play in the Rose Bowl every year but also to schedule each other in nonconference games each year.

that's because many "big time programs" won't travel west of the Mississippi to play football games. There is a school in Florida who still won't if memory serves me correctly.

Awesome! Rutgers was champ for 7 days and lost it, never to regain it again.

I think times succesfully defended would be a more interesting count -- keeping it for several days during the offseason shouldn't count for anything.

Reminds me of how Florida State backed out of a scheduled visit to Husky Stadium back in the Don James era - can't remember the exact year. I think Miami may have done so as well - I have a hard time believing that the UW would've scheduled a one-off game at Miami in '94 without there being a return visit by Miami to Husky Stadium.
