Yet Another Interesting FOF2k4 Play

From my MP league:

1-10-MIN02 (01:12) MIN 11 Culpepper pass fell incomplete, intended for 82 Barlow.
CHI 33 Tillman defended the pass.
Penalty: CHI - Defensive Pass Interference.
--
1-01-CHI01 (01:03) MIN 11 Culpepper pass completed to 40 Kleinsasser for 1 yard and a touchdown!
Extra point by MIN 8 Elling was good.

Talk about a rocket for an arm. Culpepper threw the ball 97 yards through the air where my DB committed pass interference. Luckily this didn't cost me the game. I don't know if I'm more impressed that he could throw the ball that far or that he could avoid the pass rush long enough for a receiver to run that far.

Dola, I had two penalties for 102 yards that game. That's what caught my attention, otherwise I probably would have missed this unless it had been a game winning play.

I personally witnessed D.T. McDowell throw a good spiral over 70 yards in the air during a game as a 17-year-old high school player. With FOF's X-factor, I wouldn't be completely shocked if it would allow an NFL player to throw one that far.

I guess the wind was pretty strong at Soldier Field. I'm just glad I had a 10 point lead and didn't end up losing because of this.

I think this is injecting too much "logic" into whatever calculations are going on in the game. I don't claim to know how this works, but I highly doubt there was any calculation of how far the QB can truly throw involved here.

I think it's much more likely that the routine to spot the ball after a pass interference penalty simply places the ball at some random spot ahead of the line of scrimmage. (Or something like that) I don't agree that this is a sensible way to execute it, but that makes more sense to me than some internal determination that this pass actualy flew for 100+ yards in the air.

You don't think that the calculation would be (at least in part) based on the pass play selected? I would certainly hope that pass interference location is tied to that.

But Culpepper has a 98/100 rating on Deep Passes

Well, yes, I would ordinarily think so -- but this isn't the first time we have seen this specific bug (though this is the most absurd example yert, of course).

So, give the fact that a pass interference penalty has the possibility to yield a totally screwed up placement, there are two possibilities:

-These really are super-long passes, resulting in correct penalty spots at absurd places; or

-These really are some error specific to the penalty routine in the game.

I wouldn't think the game would have some cheap backdoor such as "pick a random spot" for the pass interference... but based on the evidence we have, in my mind that's now the leading contender. Perhaps it only happens on certain types of pass routes (and is thus fairly rare) or something of that sort, but I really don't think that the FOF quarterback is throwing a 100-yard pass in the game (i.e. a generic error, manifesting occasionally in penalties). I think this is a game error triggered by the penalty.

Though, on second thought, the persistent weirdness with the YAC calculation might suggest I'm wrong... maybe some (many? most?) of those 80-yard TD bombs in the game really are 75 yards in the air and 5 yards after the catch...

That's easy enough to check. YAC is documented in the play-by-play now. I've seen at least one bomb that had 30+ YAC, so they're not all that.

A quick check of IHOF would indicate that the very long ball thrown in the air is a rarity:

Quote:
&Offense: Weak Formation, Three WR, Strength = Left. &Defense: 43 Alignment, Nickel Personnel, 2-Deep Zone, Pass - Normal. 1-20-TUC10 (02:25) TUC 18 Dinger pass completed to 85 Truett for 90 yards and a touchdown! &Truett gained 68 yards after the catch. &The quarterback threw away from the double coverage. Extra point by TUC 10 Waters was good.

Quote:
&Offense: Single-Back Formation, Normal, Strength = Right. &Defense: 43 Alignment, Man-to-Man (Loose), Pass - Normal. Blitzing: 38 Swanson. 1-10-MIA09 (02:16) MIA 5 Taylor pass completed to 82 Groff for 91 yards and a touchdown! &Groff gained 73 yards after the catch. Extra point by MIA 14 Martin was good.

Quote:
&Offense: Pro Formation, Normal, Strength = Right. &Defense: 43 Alignment, Nickel Personnel, Man-to-Man (Loose), Pass - Aggressive. Blitzing: 54 Snavely. 2-15-ROC15 (14:16) ROC 16 Westcott pass completed to 81 Collins for 85 yards and a touchdown! &Collins gained 61 yards after the catch. Conversion Attempt: ROC 36 Wiggins run succeeded.

Quote:
&Offense: Single-Back Formation, Normal, Strength = Right. &Defense: 43 Alignment, Man-to-Man (Bump & Run), Run - Normal. 1-10-GEO20 (15:00) GEO 19 Sutter pass completed to 85 Weaver for 80 yards and a touchdown! &Weaver gained 42 yards after the catch. Extra point by GEO 6 Wilkes was good.

Quote:
&Offense: Five WR Spread Formation, Strength = Right. &Defense: 34 Alignment, Dime Personnel, 3-Deep Zone, Pass - Aggressive. 1-10-AAR20 (01:16) AAR 16 Woods pass completed to 82 Duenas for 72 yards. Tackled by FRE 32 Windsor. &Duenas gained 13 yards after the catch. &The quarterback threw away from the double coverage.

This isn't every long pass play, because I left off some of the obvious ones: when the guy with the 75-yard catch had something like 100 receiving yards on 3 catches with 60 YAC.

Ironically, it is Jim's QB who has the longest thrown-in-the-air ball on the list above. Go figure.

Thrown maybe 65 yards in the air based on a normal drop for a deep pass. Into a dime 3-deep. Poor defensive performance.

I'm partial to this play when it comes to truly piss-poor defense:
Quote:

&Offense: Single-Back Formation, Normal, Strength = Right.
&Defense: 43 Alignment, Nickel Personnel, 4-Deep Zone, Pass - Aggressive. Blitzing: 56 Grier.
2-04-ORL45 (07:06) TUC 18 Dinger pass completed to 85 Truett for 45 yards and a touchdown!
&The quarterback threw into double coverage.
Extra point by TUC 10 Waters was good.
Double coverage on best receiver? Check
4-Deep Zone? Check
Agressive Pass Defense? Check
Result? Dinger-to-Truett, into double coverage, thrown 53-63 yards in the air for a TD. Dutch, your secondary sucks.

Another big bomb:

Quote:
Offense: I-Formation, Normal, Strength = Right.
Defense: 34 Alignment, Man-to-Man (Bump & Run), Run - Normal.
1-10-HON39 (12:55) HON 5 Kranz pass completed to 81 O'Neal for 61 yards and a touchdown!
O'Neal gained 2 yards after the catch.
Extra point by HON 6 Swallow was good.

59 yards plus the drop-back in the air.

I love that scene:

59 yards was one of the longer ones in the air that I've seen, so I was curious. I remembered that we'd had a discussion about this, did a search, and found it.
