Online Gambling

As of tonight, online gambling is illegal in the US. ISP's will be required to block gambling sites and banks will not be allowed to transfer funds to gambling sites.

Also, I no longer consider myself a Republican, effective tonight.

Well, at least SOME good came out of this.

EDIT: Should me, Bucc and SkyDog prepare a seat for you at the libertarian's table?

I also forgot to add that betting on horses over the Internet and purchasing state lottery tickets over the Internet are perfectly legal!

I wonder if there's any legal recourse on this bill. I'm sure sites like Poker Stars and Party Poker will fight it if there is. It looks like it is targeting the deposits to the gambling sites and neteller and all those others with credit cards being banned already. So does this mean if we have money in already we can still play because these sites are located outside of the U.S. so they can't just shut them down. It'll take a while to be signed and take effect, so hopefully something good happens before then.

Well I've done some research and there doesn't seem to be much to the legal fights that could come up like how the Wire Act only pertains to sports betting, poker is a game of skill not chance, and others I haven't come across yet. Still haven't found where the U.S. has jurisdiction over the merchants like Neteller and Firepay but there must be. President Bush will sign this off next week and it probably goes into effect in the next 270 days. Also, I still haven't found where withdrawing money from these sites is a problem, so I'm guessing we can still play with the money we have invested and take it out, but just not put more in. I know the websites majority of players come from the U.S. so they could shut down, but many players play in Canada, Europe, and Asia so we'll see. They probably won't target individual players in the U.S., just the gambling sites, banks, and merchants like Neteller and Firepay.

Might need the ISPs to fight back on this one. If they are going to be asked to block ISPs, I'm not sure how willing they will be to comply.

As for me, I'm about tired of this government shit. About ready to clear a spot at the table for me too...

The problem is Poker Stars and Party Poker are not American companies. Therefore, they are going to have to lobby for the right to be regulated.

I think online poker will be back in a year or two, but it will only be major land based casinos running the show, which will mean no rakeback, no bonuses, etc.

Well, I wasn't planning on voting anyways(for Santorum probably), but this should pretty well clinch that I go to the effort of re-registering and casting for Casey Jr.

Does this mean I'm going to have to wait longer for a table to fill up on Pokerstars tonight?

DAMMIT!

Technically, the bill isn't law until Bush signs it. He will do so in the next week or so. No chance of a veto.

Second, the bill has a 270 day period during which the feds will craft regulations on how this will affect financial institutions. This will be the key to the legislation. The big question is how much it will affect sites like Neteller and Firepay. So, nine months or so from now you may have to look for alternate means to get money in and out of sites, but I have to think people will find a way to do that.

Third, I think the position of Congress has been all along that internet gambling is already illegal in most parts of the country, and this bill does nothing with regard to the actual legality of online gambling.

Lastly, I do think the legislation sucks, but the key going forward will be to see what regulations are promulgated and how companies like the gambling sites and Neteller react to those regs.

No, I don't see anything in the bill that mentions withdrawls. Basically it just makes it illegal for banks and merchants like neteller to deposit into an online gambling site. But if for some reason it does affect withdrawls, I'm sure some type of notice would be given.

cool

That would suck if you can withdrawal your money out from poker stars back to netteller after tonight.

I guess if people want to gamble still they better deposit their money from neteller to pokerstars, etc before they can't anymore.

Seriously, dude, if you want people to respect you on this site, you should try reading threads. Twice above people have stated that the bill isn't law yet, and there's a 270 day phase in period.

Alternatively, you're losing your touch, and touche.

Thats what I was wondering, I know I have a lot of fun playing in sit n go's about once a month, but i will still be able to do that for about a year right? I mean nothing is going to change over night? We poker players can keep playing for a least a couple of more months like nothing has happened?
