Alright, boyz!! Here we go.. Final Fantasy XII First Impressions!

Anybody getting this one? I'll probably get it within a week(thank you Best Buy Gift Cards), but I was curious if anybody will be playing it at midnight tonight or tomorrow.

I had this pre-order paid off a couple months ago, and got the call that it'll be in tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, I probably won't get around to grabbing it until later that night.

I'll get it eventually, but there are too many good games out right now to find time to play it.

Have Friday - Wednesday off. Majority of time spent will likely be with this game.

I'll get it eventually. Probably wait for the reviews though. If it turns out to be another FF8, I'll wait awhile.

Meh. This is the first FF since FFIV for the SNES that I'm not excited about playing. I find my interest in "ragtag bunch of rebels out to save the world" type games to be waning in the past couple of years.

I'm rather curious about the gameplay change they've incorporated.

From what I read, the plot is different from other FF. That's why some FF fans dont like this game..

Yeah, it sounds interesting.

Wasn't Ivalice the name of the kingdom in Final Fantasy Tactics?

For the GBA, I believe it was. Though, I wouldn't know if the theme/background of FF12's Ivalice is the same as GBA FFT's.

Can't remember if PS1's FFT was Ivalice... nor can I find my copy.

just Fantasy would be too bland.

not to mention, theres always a new set of characters.

Why is their a Final Destination 2 and 3? Didn't they all die in 1?

This game had my wife and I stumped. She loves the Final Fantasy games and we were at Hastings a while back (a month or two) and they had it out to rent. She decided not to get it that night and put it back on the shelf.

The next week she wanted to get it and it wasn't there.

Wasn't there the next week either. WTF? People must be loving the game!

Now I see this and know the game was never out. Someone at Hastings screwed something up. They sell games so maybe it was a pre-order thing they were supposed to put out and had it in the wrong section, but I looked in the for-sale section and never say anything there either.

Yeah, since about halfway through FF 7 I haven not played but maybe 15-20 per game because it is now considered 'her' game in my mind. Of course she likes to play 'my game', Grand Theft Auto too. My problem here is that she just likes to drive over people, and beat the shit out of them. I can only take so much of watching that so she is limited to doing that when I am not home pretty much.

I'm pretty impressed so far, about an hour or so into it. The graphics are pretty good, and the storyline seems a bit more...adult, I guess? The new battle system is nice -- I love not having to continually hit "Attack" over and over again. I have yet to put Gambits to use, but the License system is pretty cool, allowing you to develop your characters as you see fit. I'll keep you guys updated as I continue on through the game.

IGN stated its very slow at first, say the first 3 hours, then picks up and tells one of the best stories ever. Key they said is how it does not follow one lead character, but many. IGN gave it a 9.5 i believe, which for them is pretty damn good.

I haven't picked it up yet...my hesitation in doing so is that I so rarely play full-on console games anymore. It's not that I don't like them so much as they're really not convenient, I'm much happier playing my DS (and every so often, my PSP). Some of it is the convenience factor. I like to play video games in bed and I'll be darned if I can do that with my PS2.

I will undoubtedly pick it up at some point. I have played and beaten every FF except the Japanese FFIII (never released stateside, will be getting it when it comes out for the DS next month or so), FFVII and FFXI. FFVII is the one I've never owned, and I own FFXI but never felt like paying to play it.

Plus, right now, I have some DS games to finish (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Contact, Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow).

Ive played about 4 hours so far and it's been pretty good so far.

+ Balthier is the best Final Fantasy character.
+Good Story and Great voice acting
+No random battles and more KOTOR gameplay.*thank god!*
+Nice graphics/art for a PS2 game
-Music so far is not as good as previous FF games
-License system, i dont like how it works. you have to pay for magic, etc

Coming from someone who doesnt like FF, it's very promising.

IIRC, the music isn't as good because the guy who had done the music for the previous few incarnations of Final Fantasy left Square-Enix.

I am about 3.5 hours in and I just got in the sewers with Balthier and Fran.

Can't agree more here, Balthier is fantastic. Fran voice was weird, I was hoping for more of a sexy european voice.

This game so far is fantastic, and this is supposed to be the slow period?

I think the music is above average, I think Sakimoto is brilliant (did the FF Tactics OST amongst others), I am just surprised that in the opening scenes, there were remakes of FF songs, instead of a new song or two.

dola - I will say this, I am glad the storyline is a war against nations as opposed and less like "THE WORLD IS IN PERIL FROM A MASSIVE, VAGUELY DEFINED THING". I was tired of those types of storylines.

I, too am enjoying the game very much at this point. I am about 4 hours into at the moment. It will definitely get most of my game playing time for the next month or so. Well worth the $37.

My co-worker and I were just talking about the game again today, and he mentioned he was reading up on a board where someone else had already beaten the game.

Apparently, he had a crazy setup for the 'Gambits' (relatively 16 total? I'll have to find that link) and never had to press a button at the very end of the game to beat it.

The Gambits are a fantastic addition to the game.

I haven't gotten them nailed down quite yet, but I'm getting there. Anyhoo, I've put in 10 hours now, which has possibly given me this headache. I'm going to do something else for a while now.

The game is interesting. I like how they applied things they learned from the shouldn't-have-been-numbered-11 FF11 while still maintaining the spirit of FF by and large. I can certainly understand why some people wouldn't like it, but I think it's going to be a pleasant experience. I haven't been this excited to play a game since 10 came out early in 01.

I haven't picked this up yet, but I know someone who has and they said the storyline is a lot more like the One True FFT (FFTA = FFMQ for tactical RPGs), which if it's true means I'm going to have to pick it up, because TOTFFT was one of the best storylines ever made in a videogame.

I still haven't purchased it, just figured I'd add this useless trivia...

Square Co., Ltd. first entered the Japanese video game industry in the mid 1980s, developing a variety of simple RPGs for Nintendo's Famicom Disk System (FDS), a disk-based peripheral for the Family Computer (also known as the "Famicom," and known internationally as the Nintendo Entertainment System). By 1987, declining interest in the FDS had placed Square on the verge of bankruptcy. At approximately the same time, Square designer Hironobu Sakaguchi began work on an ambitious new fantasy role playing game for the cartridge-based Famicom, inspired in part by Enix's popular Dragon Quest (known to some in the United States as Dragon Warrior). [2] Sakaguchi had plans to retire after the completion of the project so he named it Final Fantasy because it was his final game, although it was also going to be Square's final game. In fact, it's commonly believed that the game was named Final Fantasy because of Square and not Sakaguchi, although Sakaguchi himself has confirmed it was named because of his plans for retirement. Either way, Final Fantasy turned out to be far from Square's or Sakaguchi's last game. Final Fantasy reversed Square's lagging fortunes, and became their flagship franchise.

I'm loving this game thus far. This is easily the best FF since FF Tactics. Engrossing characters and a storyline that's kept me interested for the time being.

I *love* the License system. It's the closest thing to a Job class system since the actual Job class system in Tactics and 5.

I haven't really beaten up the license system yet, and I am still a little relunctant to start using up points and end up going in the wrong direction. I have just pretty much been saving up except for Libra and the +50HP.

I am about 7 hours in and the storyline is already gripping and the game is actually difficult not like FF10.

Can we put spoilers in here? or no?

BTW - I think the music is very good, it fits the settings well and while (so far, or at least I've heard) there isn't a "memorable" song to come away from this game with. I think the music is well done.

Edit: I think I can talk about this game all day and I haven't felt like that about a game in years.
