Jeff Bowden resigns at FSU

http://sports.myway.com/news/11142006/v5064.html

Jeff Bowden Steps Down as FSU Offensive Coordinator
Nov 14, 1:42 PM (ET)

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -Florida State offensive coordinator Jeff Bowden resigned Tuesday, just three days after the Seminoles were shut out for the first time in 233 games.

His resignation will be effective at the end of this season, athletic director David Hart Jr. said.

Bowden, the youngest son of Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, replaced current Georgia coach Mark Richt as the Seminoles' offensive coordinator in 2001.

Florida State (5-5, 3-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) has its homecoming game Saturday against Western Michigan followed by the season finale on Nov. 25 against rival Florida.

Bobby Bowden has stood by his son's performance as offensive coordinator despite a notable decline in scoring and yardage gained in the past half dozen seasons.

At his booster luncheon Monday, Bowden said he decided a couple of weeks ago to quit responding to critics seeking his son's ouster. The 77-year-old Bowden said he had reached the point where he was upset enough to punch somebody over the criticism his son was taking.

The school had skirted a nepotism policy by having the younger Bowden report to another coach on the staff other than his father.

Does 6-6 get you to a bowl?

It should, if you're in the ACC (and several other conferences with bowl ties)

With 9 bowl tie-ins for the ACC (Emerald, Music City, Champ Sports, Meineke, Liberty, Peach, MPC Computer, Gator, and Orange), 6-6 is probably plenty to do it.

At the moment, only 6 ACC teams are bowl eligible, with FSU & Miami both still looking for one more win.

There will be 4 new bowls this season, so they have to get the teams from somewhere. The NCAA also changed the rule to allow one 1AA victory to count towards the 6 needed to be eligible for a bowl.

I think the ACC still only has eight tie-ins. I don't think the Liberty Bowl deal ever came about. (ESPN shows the matchup to be CUSA champ versus SEC #6)

Regardless, whodathunk that at this point in the season, both Miami and FSU would be battling to get the sixth win for a bowl and exile to Boise or San Francisco?

So, how many ACC victories count towards the 6 needed to be eligible for a bowl then? Two? Three? It can't be much more than three.

My bad, and you're right.

That's hilarious when you consider the ACC has more top-25 teams than any other conference right now.

I can't wait to see how well Miami and FSU fans travel to their bowls this year.

I find this a little amusing. So what, they have an assistant head coach he reports to? So does Bobby have to tell someone else to tell Jeff to run a trick-play or whether or not to punt?

Well, since they look like they're going to San Fran and Boise, it really wouldn't have mattered much. The ACC will still have to eat a lot of tickets regardless of who got sent out there. May actually be better this way because it's expected that they wouldn't sell their allotments no matter which bowls they went to this year.

That is true.

I was more thinking about how unmotiviated their fans and alum must be with their performances this season. I guess with the way they are playing, it wouldn't be much of a surprise for one of them to miss 6 wins.

It's a start. I'm kinda hoping they lose to Westerm Michigan as well so they don't have to go to an embarrassing bowl. Plus, a 5-7 season might signal even more changes. Apparently, Tallahassee is going nuts right now. The local sports guy, the very underrated and funny Jeff Cameron, started Monday's show with a 30 minute, no break rant that was great. It was one of those "sad but true" verbal lashings, but it needed to be said.

If you're interested in hearing a fan blast the program, check this out:

hxxp://www.1270theteam.com/main.html

Go to the Jeff Cameron Podcast and click on one of the "The fallout from Wake" 1st segment from 11/13 links. Awesome stuff.

If someone had told me in April that I'd have a better football team to root for AFTER moving to Lexington from Tallahassee, I would still be laughing. But that appears to be the truth of the matter.

Coach's son gets big payoff to leave Florida State
By BRENT KALLESTAD, Associated Press Writer
November 15, 2006

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida State offensive coordinator Jeff Bowden received a $537,000 buyout from the school's boosters to resign.

The settlement was revealed Wednesday when the school released a copy of the agreement Bowden's attorneys reached with the university and its boosters. The resignation takes effect Nov. 26, a day after the season finale against Florida.

Bowden -- youngest son of head coach Bobby Bowden -- retains his present $141,000 salary until his contract expires next August. He then will receive annual payments of $107,500 until August 2012.

The agreement, dated Nov. 14, was signed by Jeff Bowden, whose legal first name is George, and Andy Miller, president of Seminole Boosters, Inc.

I'd have been much happier if he resigned at halftime of the Florida game and was forced to walk across the field to get to his car.

"The leading candidate to replace Bowden is Valdosta State coach Chris Hatcher, a source close to Bobby Bowden told ESPN's Joe Schad. Hatcher is close to the head coach and would be available to coach as soon as a bowl game.

Hatcher, considered an offensive guru, led V aldosta to a Division II national championship in 2004. Valdosta did not make the playoffs this season for the first time since 1999."

Hatcher as frontrunner is what I've been hearing too. Apparently he & Bobby have become close friends, so I would think he's the leading candidate.

I saw in an ESPN chat today that Georgia may also be looking to get Hatcher as their OC.

I hope not, but he seems to be as feisty as Paterno these days. In fact, I think, secretly, they are trying to outlast each other without ever coming out and saying it. They know that whichever one of them lasts the longest will have the all-time wins record forever.

BTW, the Tally papers say the Emerald Bowl in SF is the most likely destination for FSU...assuming it wins against Western Michigan, which is no safe bet. Bowden decided to start Weatherford, who is obviously less mobile than Lee, despite the fact that WMU has the top individual sack leader in the NCAA and a highly-ranked pass defense (not to mention a very good rush defense, and we can't run the ball). I don't think anyone would be shocked if we lost this game.

The big question is going to be how badly we get stomped by UF on our field. It ain't gonna be pretty.

Bobby has finally commented on the situation, and he holds eBay partially to blame.

He remained steadfast in his support; Bobby even said he would hire Jeff all over again, even knowing what he does now about how it would end. As for why things didn't work out, he didn't point to statistics or won-lost records.

"Because you all ignited it," he said to a small room of reporters. "You listen to eBay and e-mail and all that junk, and you all kept writing about it and that fans it and makes it grow and grow, and it becomes a cancer. That's why."

Okay, maybe the world has passed Coach Bowden, Sr. by after all.
