What brand of vodka do you drink?

With the holidays coming up, I have decided to add vodka to the bar. Now, I am not a vodka drinker so I am up on the what a "good" vodka is. Since we have a few folks here that enjoy a beverage or two , so I figure I would put up a poll of my options and then go with that.

I don't drink vodka. I had an unfortunate nearly fatal vodka incident 27 years ago and I haven't touched the stuff since....

except in long island iced teas.

But with the price of brita filters, you aren't saving that much over buying the good stuff straight away.

That is the first time I've heard of them. I'll have to track down a bottle after looking at the link provided.

If, as it sounds, your main goal is to impress and please your guests and friends who are vodka drinkers, I think Grey Goose is the label for you. It is the crowd-pleaser among the advertising-friendly set these days, and is quite popular.

I responded to the initial question with my brand of choice, Stoli. It once was considered the "prestige" brand of vodka in the US, but has since been lapped in promotion efforts by Absolut and, more recently, Grey Goose. For my money, it remains the best choice, but it admittedly lacks the cachet of the now higher profile brands.

I had some Vodka in Helsinki that was truly outstanding. So much so that I don't remember the name. We were doing shots all night, and zero hangover the next morning. Not sure if it was due solely to the quality of the vodka, or the -23 degree temperatures outside walking back from the bar to the hotel.

Vodka is my main choice when I drink. I guess advertising may be playing a subliminal part in it, but I've tried all 3 of the above and Grey Goose seems to me to be the smoothest, best Vodka I've ever consumed.

For those who haven't tried Ciroc, give it a look. It is distilled from grapes, so it has a different character than the other vodkas that are made from grain, corn, or potatoes.

I was in fact in talks with the heads of Belvedere for an endorsement campaign quite some time ago, and by the time they were able to meet my requirements Grey Goose swooped in, pardon the pun, and the rest is advertising history.

In my playing days I personally liked to imbibe in a nice Stoli Vanil and Ginger Ale. It is like alcoholic fornication for your mouth.

Hey, James Bond drinks Smirnoff (at least for this latest marketing cycle), so you can't go wrong there. A glass of it in your hand looks quite nice alongside your Omega watch.

Smirnoff is good for mixing. If you're drinking a martini, you need higher quality stuff than that...

Anyway, I'm a fan of Belvedere, Stoli, or Grey Goose if I'm drinking it straight, or close to straight. If I'm mixing it doesn't matter.

I find it pretty funny when people order a vodka and cranberry (or whatever) and ask for Grey Goose, making it a $15 drink. Meanwhile, that bottle of Goose is filled with Popov. As if they're not making enough money already...

I may have to pick some of that up this week. I'm working at a liquor store over the holidays and I they've always carried Tito's in the past. And even though I usually drink whiskey, I did just finish off a bottle of vodka.

This is the reason I buy 2 of everything. I keep the cheap stuff hidden under the sink, but get it out everytime one of my relatives wants me to mix them a special mix drink, like this gatorade special here. They are not going to be able to taste the alcohaul anyway, so why waste the money. For my family it is Rum Punch in the summers.

I used to go top shelf (especially Belvedere), but then I saw a bottom shelf brand called "Poland Spring". That amused me greatly, and I've been a bottom-shelfer ever since. I don't usually drink vodka staight up, so it doesn't make that big of a difference to me.

When I do go higher quality, I will still do Belvedere or Grey Goose. When the brainchild behind Grey Goose sold the rights to Bacardi for $2 Billion, a lot of that money ended up at my alma mater and now helps fund a scholarship program for low-income matriculants. So I guess I feel an affinity for the brand (even though it's now a Bacardi brand with no connection to the school)...

Dola--

Grey Goose is a very interesting story if you are in to branding. The product did not exist unti the mid 90s. It's inventor, Sidney Frank, came up with the idea that you could successfully introduce another high-end vodka in a crowded shelf-set by taking advantage of perception. He specifically decided to have it manufactured in France, since the perception was that luxury goods from France were of very high quality. He also priced the stuff at a much higher price point than the competition, which also created the perception that this was a much higher quality product. It worked. Of course, it also helped that it was actually a good vodka.

Just for the record. Do not ever drink Brilliant Vodka. There's a reason Scotland is not known for vodka, and one taste of that vile thing is proof.

Belvedere or Stoli. Preferably Belvedere.
