xbox 360 HD question
Does the 360 not have an HDMI setup? Is it a tremendous loss to go the component route?

from what i've read, the x-box 360 hd quality is comparable to any standalone hd-dvd players.
It does not have a HDMI setup. The caveat being is that high-definition pictures CAN be disabled over component. Right now this is not the case. It is entirely up to the disc manufactuers. Who knows if the studios will change their mind in the future. Also as of right now the 360 HD is limited in sound output, it will do Dolby 5.1 (which I currently have), but it will not do the more advanced formats. Games look great in HD over the component cables.

Another question guys...you've been a big help as always. (this forum's better for this kind of support than any articles) How long is the ethernet cable that comes with the premium version?

Thanks Eagles...I think I'm going to need about 15 feet. $100 for a wireless adapter to me is just too much.

I'm almost certain it isn't 15 feet. If anything, I might be a bit long on the eyeball and it might only be 10 feet. Of course, you can always buy a longer ethernet cord for a reasonable price. Seems like a standard Cat 5 Cable.

Cat 5 or Cat 6? Is there a difference?

The cable that they include is Cat 5. I'm sure Cat 6 would work as well if you want to buy that. I believe the only difference is Cat 6 is more expensive, but is supposed to have better data transmission.

Thanks...one final question -- I think -- you don't need any kind of memory card assuming you get the premium version, correct?

If you have the premium 360 then you have the hard drive, so no memory card needed. Unless you want to save games and take them over to a friends house or something, then you could use one for that.

Also, a memory card is useful for games like College Hoops. If you buy a data transfer kit and a memory card, you can download "real" rosters from the internet and then load them into your game. Same for NCAA College Football. It's also useful for games like Dead Rising which only allow you to have 1 save slot on your hard drive. But, like Cringer said, you don't need a memory card.

Supposedly MS is going to release new 360's with a cooler chip and HDMI built in. I forget where I read the article at though.

It is in several places on the net. The new chip is actually a 64nm chip. And there are pictures (and even a video) of a 360 with an HDMI connection, though MS won't confirm so mmany still don't believe it. They are also supposed to put out a bigger HD (120GB) this year. The HD is fine by me, because that can and probably will be sold on it's own. The HDMI will piss me off because I am not buying a new 360 a year after I bought my first when it is still working fine. I will have to live without HDMI.

Is there an estimated date on this? I too would hate to buy this now only to find out a week from now it's changed.

No, Microsoft won't even really comment on any of it so really it's all speculation I guess. The new processor is the only thing I have heard that has been confirmed. And the 120 GB HD may have been, but I think that will probably be a stand alone item anyways.

When it comes to the wireless connection, does it have to be the actual xbox version or can you purchase another type at a lesser price that'll still get the job done?

Yet another question as I see yet another accessory...do I need one of these fans?
Which battery pack is better for wireless? I'm guessing the one that is $30 is but who knows. |

I'm not sure if generic wireless game receivers will work or not. I think I've read somewhere that they do, but with some headaches.
I've stuck with my plug and play only because I already had it, but the Quick Charge is a much better product from everything I've heard or read. You don't absolutely need a fan, but I bought one for peace of mine. My 360 never froze up with or without it except for one game NCAA College Hoops and at the exact same spot in Madden (which was due to a bug in the game.) |

Anything else you would recommend definitely getting Eagles? Here's what I'm planning on getting:
$399 edition Another wireless control Two battery packs Some sort of charging mechanism I'm going to get a game or two of course and then I'm going to try and do the live by just hooking up an ethernet cord to start with. |

Nothing else that I can think of that is a must have. Although you've probably already seen the thread, I highly recommend college hoops if you like college basketball at all.

Is this the one that just came out? Some of my students were talking about it I believe. I used to be a big college b-ball fan but as I've gotten older I just haven't watched it as much.
Tiger Woods Call of Duty 2 (only because it's 20 bucks cheaper) Two games coming out soon: Assasin's Creed and the Midway game. Will probably get the baseball game and football/soccer when the new versions come out. What are some popular titles? Favorites of your own? |

Make sure you get the Quick Charge Kit and not the Play & Charge Kit.

Quick play is the plug in, correct? Can charge 2 at a time? That's the one I was planning on. Think it's 30 bucks.

College Hoops came out a month or two ago. It's a great sports console basketball game with a deep recruiting system. It is my favorite 360 game right now. I also think Gears of War is a great game, but I haven't found time to play it because my free time is getting more limited and College Hoops is the game I want to play the most. I'm not a big of shooters, but I've heard Call of Duty 2 and 3 are good games. Tiger Woods is a very solid game as well if you like golf. Other games I like: NBA 2k7, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, NCAA College Football, and Dead Rising are my favorites. I'm looking forward to when Winning Eleven's new game comes out on the 360 in America. |

Or you can just save your money and get Nickel Metal Hydride AA batteries and and charger and just make sure you always have some charged up and ready to play. That's what I did and it saved me money compared to buying those accessories. I just got my 360 last Thursday and I haven't seen a need to get the fan system but I'm planning on getting one of the ones that plugs into the back via the AC adapter plugin, I do not reconnect the one that uses the USB port that they sell at Circuit city it's loud and you have to manually turn it off and on. |

Also I recommend just getting the official Xbox360 controllers, if you have a Circuit city nearby they are on sell for $39.99 as of two days ago, which saves you about $10 bucks. I actually haven't seen non official wireless ones in any stores I've gone to.

I have a linksys router already so what exactly would I need to get for the actual xbox?

You'd need to use a network cable or the wireless networking adpater for the 360. |
