For most songs, the recording/editing usually takes longer than the writing. For these songs, there aren't a lot of lines, because more emphasis is on the singing. So there are a number of times when I have to re-record to get a half decent pitch since I usually sing a number of songs that are out of my range.

For rap songs, however, the writing takes me longer because I am not only trying to mimic the cadence, but I am also trying to make sure that the collection of words makes sense when I read them outloud.

Usually I write something to an incident and/or person that I find amusing and I can't stop until it is finished because I am afraid I am gonna lose the gist of the moment.

Being a child to a couple of Southerners (from Birmingham, Alabama) and a military brat was why I had an interesting exposure lot of music. R&B, Jazz and Soul definitely came from the parents, but living in Barstow and 29 Palms, CA let me be exposed to Country, Punk and Rock. El Toro and Camp Pendleton is where I got a heavy dose of Pop, Rap, Grundge, and Metal since we were living off base.

I played clarinet around the 6th grade and moved to trumpet from 7th to 9th grade. Gave up playing instruments, but was part of a short lived rap group when I was a freshman because I was one mean beat boxer. The group was called “Cutt Crew”, so the name was already a sign of our demise. We were a performance for 2 elementary school parties because we were so hard core.

Other than that, my weakest part is the actual singing.

Yes, I like rap, both old and new skool. As far as favorite rappers, Tupac Shakur, Kool Moe Dee, Run DMC, LL Cool J, Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, PM Dawn, Early MC Hammer (Turn This Mutha Out), Beastie Boys, Nas, Eminem are a few of my favorites.

I would love to do another rap parody, but writing lyrics for a rap song is much harder to any other since I have to keep the cadence in mind as well. I want to badly parody “Slow Jamz” by Kanye West, but trying to learn Twista's cadence is such a pain.

I don’t necessarily have a favorite musician. I often find that I like 3 or 4 songs from a particular musician and the play it gets depends on my mood. As far as influential musician, I would have to say Bobby McFerrin. I was always fascinated about how much attention he paid to the detail of every song and was able to mimic it.

Step 1 – Find a midi file or karaoke music of the song I want to parody.
Step 2 – Write the lyrics to the parody.
Step 3 – Open up Adobe Audition and label the tracks (music, main verse, background vocals, adlibs).
Step 4 - Add the music to the music track.
Step 5 - Sing the main, background and adlibs on their own tracks.
Step 6 – Clean up the audio and add effects to the tracks (instead of adding the effect to the recorded audio, I usually like to add the effect to the track itself so that you don't alter the original file).
Step 7 – Merge the main verse, background vocals and adlibs together on its own track.
Step 8 – Adjust the merged track so that it blends with the music track.
Step 9 – Adjust the levels on the merged and music tracks.
Step 10 – Export your preferred format.

As far as equipment, I use a good quality digital USB microphone (Samson CO1U), some pretty good earphones (Sony MDRV-6), and Adobe Audition. You can easily use Audacity and achieve some pretty good results as well.

No. I don't work from home. I am currently contracted with Dell as a web/database developer (That is just a fancy way of saying that a temp agency found me and had connections with Dell).. I have already been working for them for 6 months after struggling to find work for 3 months when we first moved out here. Now I used to be home quite a lot when we lived in Phoenix, but I will get to that later.

I feel more at ease with the horror and sci-fi.

Photo manipulation: I am not a great photographer, but I do edit a number of images that the wife takes. Not a pro, but definitely not a rookie.

Web development: I am a rookie at this. I was a database developer for years. But I went back to school to learn to develop on the web. It may not look like a creative job at all, but if you have a number of limitations, you have to come up with some pretty creative solutions.

Motion graphics/editing: Trying to improve my skill in this area since I have fun with this stuff.

Okay, when doing the singing, I use Adobe Audition After exporting it as a high quality wave file, I use Sorenson Squeeze to prep it for the web to have a better than decent sound quality.

For the movies, I use Photoshop (for titles, images, props), Premiere (only to import video, if needed), and Adobe After Effects (for special effects, transitions).

Wow…flashback question. Sometime in 2000, I convinced a co-worker to purchase Front Office Football. I had bought the version previous to the one EA sold and would tell him about the awesomeness of the game. Back and forth, we would brag about our dynasties.

Well my co-worker was the one that became a member of the “The Sidelines”. From time to time I would stop by his cube and he would be laughing about something that occurred on that message board. Back then, I wasn’t much into message boards since I thought they were only used to post bug reports and nothing more. After about 4 months of his constant addiction to this board and his stories about people I knew nothing about, I became a lurker.

However I wasn’t as addicted as he was and only posted 3 times in the life of that message board. When checking to see if a new version of FOF was coming out, I discovered that “The Sidelines” became defunct and found the FOFC. I didn’t bother to join, however, since I couldn’t remember what my password was for the old forum.

Eventually I let myself be known, but people didn’t quite know how to react to me since I was new and couldn’t understand my sense of humor which tends to be sarcastic and ridiculous.

I couldn’t help, but to be fascinated by what has occurred in that legendary thread. I believe most of our prominent game designers had a say in that thread and so has Matrix staff and customers. There is an amazing progression of the development to the pseudo release of the game. There are strange animations, questionable screenshots, illegal use of graphics, the developer’s wife, etc.

Considering that more than a tenth of my posts are in that thread alone, I would take a huge hit if that thread was deleted. And I could only recover in 6 to 12 months.

Ok…I will try my best to keep this short, but I have to explain what led me to meet her, because there was a good chance I would have never met her. Back in the early 90’s after finishing up 2 years of junior college, I still had no idea what direction I wanted to go in my life. Most of the computer courses I had taken were focused on programming or working with business applications and I knew I wanted to focus on more creative endeavors.

Finding work in San Diego county was tough during this time and I wanted to so desperately move out of the house so I wouldn’t be much of a burden to my mother who was raising 3 sons on her own. I could only manage to get short term jobs.

I tried to enlist in the Air Force at MEPS in San Diego, but I was told that I had asthma when taking some sort of respitory test. Made no sense to me since I ran track for 4 years and cross country for 1. Then I joined a number of temp agencies to find more work and was hardly getting any calls. This led me to join a government program called the Job Corps.

Looked great in the commercials, but I was in for a shock. I joined this program and moved on the campus. I did know that the program was really focused mainly for high school students who didn’t have any job preparation skills, but I didn’t care at this time because I knew they had some good job placement and finding steady work was becoming a pain. What I didn’t know is that this was also a place where a judge gave convicted young people a second chance to get their life straight.

It was the most interesting experience in my life. The location used to be an old military base that they converted into dorms and the whole place was behind these 15 foot walls. I was roomed with a guy who used to be a cocaine addict and another guy who had issues with alcohol and weed. That alone should have been reason enough for me to leave, but for some reason I have always been curious about people and went ahead and took the risk.

I learned a lot about myself and definitely how to deal with difficult people. I also learned that most of these kids (I called them kids, but many were 2 to 3 years younger than me) didn’t fit the stereo type you come to know for troubled people.

After about 6 months, I was finally ready to move on. I had finished all of their courses for some Clerical Certificate and hoped that would land me a decent job so that I could go back to school. I had really been putting around for 4 of those months since I had finished all the requirements way too early. So when they found out I knew a thing or two about computers. They had me installing software on their old computers through DOS and helping out at the front desk (those bastards got some free labor).
However, the staff also wanted me to consider moving to Los Angeles Job Corps so that I could get into this Advanced Clerical Program that enabled me to join a union. After going through a number of confrontations with my roommates from time to time, I already had my fill, but I was also knew this would probably be my free trip to Los Angeles. I agreed that I would do it and I was told there was going to be a representative coming after the holidays.

Well I come back from the holidays and they tell me he came the day after I left for my holiday break. I was ticked off until they told me that the entire staff convinced him that I needed to go. On top of that, this guy checked into my background to find out I was a military brat. This somehow gave me brownie points because he was a former Marine. He had never accepted anyone without a face to face and I just happened to be a first exception.

So I ended up moving to Los Angeles and attending that school (TCU – Transportation/Communication Union). Around this same time, Dodgerchick…..
Ok, I am sick of using the screen name. My wife’s name is Lorena. My name is Anthony. I will continue to use these names because it is easier to write.

I first met Lorena when they had an outing to some play. Robert Townsend (a comedian) was one of the guest and I was trying to get a picture with the guy. One of the buttons on my long sleeve shirt had popped, so I got creative and put my watch on the outside of my shirt to keep it closed.

Lorena kept staring at my shirt and asked me why I had a watch on the outside of my shirt. I explained my reasoning and she just thought it was so funny. For me, it was practical and for her it was ridiculous.

Later, I would see Lorena in the same class and found out we had similar backgrounds in regards to attitude towards life, education, etc. We went on a number of trips to Universal City Walk, watching plays, watching a number of movies, etc. This eventually lead us to seriously date on September 13, 1994. We would then move in together on my birthday in June of 1995. We then got married in June 1999. First child on September 2000, 2nd child in April 2004.

My biggest challenge has been the language barrier. I speak very little Spanish and her parents speak little English. But her sister (my sister in law) and all of Lorena’s cousins are fluent in both, so I never had a hard time. Plus her best friends and their families are freaking entertaining by just being themselves.

We have been really good at rewarding her when she does well in school. I still don’t understand how she remember conversations we had 3 to 6 months ago. She, of all people, has taught me that I must value the time I have with her.

My son has been a joy to watch. It’s as if he is teaching himself things and hates it when we try to do it. We have to be careful around him when we do any type of process in front of him, because he will remember it. Right now, he knows that as soon as you plug in the heater, you have to push the button 8 times to get it to the highest setting, then he pushes the button to make it oscillate. He also likes to lock people out of the room and look under the door and laugh at you since you can’t get in. He is also anal when he lines objects on the floor. They have to be evenly spaced and go in an arc or S-Curve. My son just pretty much confirmed that children learn at their own pace.

No, I don’t practice martial arts at all, but I used to love those old movies. When I was living in 29 Palms in the mid 70’s, I used to watch Kung Fu Theatre on KTLA Channel 5. They had a lot of those dubbed karate movies and me and my brothers would spend hours watching them over the weekend. Then we would go outside and practice those cinematic moves. I don’t know enough about martial arts to choose a type to practice, but in all honesty, I would rather learn yoga or meditation before learning martial arts. And for staying in shape I would rather play basketball.

Oh and before I forget, I have been currently beta testing a martial arts MMORPG for a couple of months. If this sounds interesting to anyone, check out this link. It is called 9 Dragons:

From 6th grade on, I played a lot of basketball, but I had no interest in joining an organized team, because the coach already picked his favorites and I had some friends that were bench warmers (in high school).

I didn’t take on another organized sport until I hit high school. That is when I took on Track and Field. I ran the 400 meters, 1600 relay, 400 relay and long jump as my main events. Wherever we needed more points, I ran the 100m, 200m and triple jump. I liked the fact that I was often underestimated because I stand at 5’7” tall, but I had some hops due to playing street ball and could dunk a tennis ball. And I was usually the 2nd or 3rd fastest sprinter in the entire school from the 100m to 400m. I wanted desperately to be number 1, but instead they liked the fact that I could compete in a number of different events and get the team points. I always trained for multiple events rather than focus on one. So I didn’t get to spend a lot of time in the gym.

As an adult, I just workout at the gym. I have tried to find some indoor places where they play basketball nearby, but haven’t had any luck. That has always been the best way for me to get in shape.

The interviewing on the show itself would be easier to do since I would be sitting in front of a small crew, but the large crowd and the rounds of other interviews on other talk shows with crowds would be nerve-wracking.

One brother. Used to be two. This is what I didn’t look forward to talking about, but I think enough time has passed for me to go off on this subject.

First of all, I am the oldest in the family. I got along with both of my brothers, but I spent more time with my brother Wan since he was closer to my age (only 3 years separating us). We both had a number of things in common and would often do things together. We always played basketball every summer for hours at a time, then we would play some roleplaying games with our friends and then we would switch up creating movies on our Mom's VHS camera. Our neighborhood hit was the Afro American Ninja. I was the director/camera man and Wan and our friends were the actors.

Of course Wan was the lead and my little brother Wesley (who is 6 years younger than me) was the adversary. Friends were split between the two sides. For whatever reason, other people in the neighborhood heard about this and the tape was copied and seen by most of them.

So why I bothered mentioning this is because my brother got a full blown scholarship for the Air Force and attended UCSD. This was going to eventually lead to Aeronautics, but during his sophomore year, he began to have a change of heart after taking a video editing class. From that point, he wanted to be an indie director. So he lost that Air Force scholarship to pursue that dream. He changed his degree to Communications because that was the closest thing you could get at UCSD and practiced at the craft during his time there.

Being a son of a Marine, creative pursuits were not a realistic goal to my father. In fact, my father had led me to believe that writing was a unrealistic goal as well. If you enjoyed the work, it was not a real job in his eyes. So while I was surprised by his decision, I was actually proud. Because I would have that inner struggle myself and never fully tried to see how far I could get.

After he graduated from college, he took some work being a cameraman for the local community channel and also was a driver at the Children's hospital while still pursuing that dream. For his practice films (that's what he called it), I was usually an extra in the films that he wrote and directed. They were fun times since we were doing the thing we used to do in high school. Only this time he had all the control and I didn't care.

Things began to look good for him later. There was actually interest in turning one of his screenplays into a television series called “Joshua's Road”. Before any of this happened, he met a young woman and they got married on October 25, 2003 in Las Vegas, just like his older brother (we got married in Vegas too). It sucked because I couldn't be there because of a project I needed to finish for school and the work demands in Phoenix, AZ. Wesley (the youngest), who actually lived in Vegas could not go as well since he just started work as a Network Admin. My mother couldn't go because of her work demands at the hosital, but also she didn't quite approve of the fiancée because of previous incidents. I actually never met her during my time in Phoenix. I just thought my mother was being a little overprotective.

But my father was able to go, which was odd because he didn't make it to a number of events when we were younger.. The reason why he wanted to marry so early was because she was pregnant and she was already 5 months along. I talked to her once before they headed to Vegas. It seemed pretty cool because Lorena was 3 months pregnant as well.

On October 26, 2003 (the very next day), my brother died in a car accident. I didn't find out till much later though. My mother had called me to tell me he was in an accident and somehow knew that he was gone. I tried to calm her down thinking she was just going off the handle. Word got around to the whole family about the accident and we just thought that maybe he had a few broken bones. He new wife came aways from the scratch without a scratch sleeping in the passenger side.

That is when the odd series of events occurred.

The crash occurred in Needles, CA, but for some reason his new wife (I won't mention her name) was flown to St. Joseph's hospital in Phoenix, AZ where we resided. Lorena (or Dodgerchick as you know her) and I drove down to the hospital to find out more details and to see if my brother was flown there as well. We reached the hospital and talked with her and she just seemed sleepy. I asked her how she was and how the baby was doing. Immediately she said that she lost the baby and tears came down her face. Believe it or not, this was actually the first time I had met her.

I was in shock, but then I asked if she knew where Wan was and she just said that she thinks that he was flown to a hospital in Tuscon. So I spend the night calling any hospital in Tuscon to find out he wasn't there. She then proceeds to nod off and we just thought that she was heavily medicated or is some sort of shock. After spending a number of hours there with our only child at the time, which is our daughter, we decided to go back to the apartment so that she could get her rest.

About 2 or 3 in the morning as I talked with different relatives on the phone, a police officer talked with my mother to tell her that he died at the scene. It was the first time I cried in over a decade. I don't remember what I said or did after that because I kept thinking there was a mistake. But the pain doesn't end there.

The next day, my dad takes the long drive to identify the body and to pick up the belongings. What we didn't know was that his new wife had called to prevent anyone from taking anything. Since she was next of kin, we couldn't do anything about it.

Then there was the matter of the wake. My brother's college buddies, coworkers and other friends throughout the years all met at his new wife's home. It was the most uncomfortable situation I have been in my entire life. The family thought that most people were making too much noise because you were supposed to be sad at a wake. That is not how we do it. We told stories of old times and everyone else told their favorite stories. A musician that played the soundtrack to his movie wanted to play a song that he performed for it. The family denied him to plug in his electric guitar, so he had a small rebellion and played the electric guitar on the side of the house without it being plugged in. It was the most beautiful thing I heard.

This then led to a revelation that she was never pregnant to begin with. The helicopter crew and the hospital were never informed or discovered any baby. When we found that out, she began to turn on us. First she called my father to help to choose a casket. My mother decided to go along with him since he was still heartbroken. This is when the new wife told my father that they already cremated the body and that he was really choosing a vase to put the ashes. I am so glad I wasn't there, because I don't know what I would have done.

Her next dig was to take all his belongings away from the house. She brought a few family member over in a car and a truck to pick up the things. But my mother had already seen what was coming and locked off the room. She flew off the handle, but didn't dare to do anything more than yell. My mother gave me what she wanted most, which was his computer and his all of his edited and non edited video files.

A number of other incidents occurred over the course of the year that tick me off and I don't want to bother to talk about, because this doesn't end.

My brother was born April 19th, 1974. My son was born on April 18, 2004. Almost 30 years later in the same hospital in which his new wife had sat there and told us that lie about losing a child, I had a newborn son. It was the strangest think that would happen because my son was first predicted to be born in late March, then it changed to early April.

But guess what? Another thing that took us all totally by surprise. In early 2005, his new wife was keeping in touch with one of my brother's college buddies. One day out of the blue, he has something to discuss with my father. We then find out she had a child 9 months after they consummated their marriage. On July 9, 2004, Troy Isaac Everet Marks was born. We had no idea she even had a child since it was kept from us plus it got to the point where both parties were not on speaking terms. This put this drama on a whole new level. Although she falsified her previous pregnancy, she was impregnated on the night of their marriage. At least that is what is said. My parents believe the child is ours. My brother and I won't believe it until there is a blood test. Yet he does has a lot of features of my brother when he was younger.

With all that drama aside, I failed to mention some details. I went back to college to get a BA in Multimedia/Web Design so that I could work with my brother in our creative endeavors. After his death in 2003, I decided to no longer be a lurker and joined the board. At first I thought I was going to pour out all the things that were occurring along that time, but my pride kept me from expressing that. So instead I decided to open myself up and show who I truly am and wasn't concerned about what other thought.

Since I graduated in 2004, it was very difficult to decide what direction I was going to go. I would soon lose my job working at a title/escrow company due to layoffs and I had no drive to seek more work. It was my chance to spend time with my children since I missed out on much of my daughter's life due to school. At least that was my intention. As my wife worked, I did the barest of things to keep up our home and moved away from my depressive thoughts by focusing on games. I did not want to get in a rut and sought some work, but most of the jobs in Phoenix were paying $8 to $10 an hour starting and with the cost of daycare for two kids, there would not have been a profit. That was when we thought it would be wise to see if there are opportunities elsewhere and it led to Austin.

In some ways, I am pissed off and relieved at the same time. Regardless of what John Elway did in the past, I think it is bunk that you decline playing for the team that drafted you. In today's game, it's not like you can't leave if it doesn't work out. Plus he could have chose to sit out if the Chargers put a poor product on the field by demanding for a higher contract offer. But now I am relieved because it seems to me that he doesn't play well under pressure. We got a lot of nice players because of him and Drew Brees proved that he could play. Okay I know he is gone now, but he was my favorite quarterback in a decade of Chargers quarterbacks.

No. We have done things together online for years. We have played Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, Ultima Online and City of Heroes together and treat it as if we were around a group of people we met at a bar. For the most part, we try to remain civil as if the people were actually in our living rooms.

It began when I started another freeware thread. A number of people were contributing to the thread, but I found out that I was doing it way too often. I wanted a thread in which I could go check out things I heard good things about, but didn't have the time. This minimized my huge bookmark list. After searching through it when it became multiple pages, it was hard to know if people were adding the same links or to find something I placed there the previous week. So I decided to organize them by create a simple web page. The web page become too long, so I used a database and customized a php link directory script. To this day, I still collect a lot of links from freeware sites, shareware sites, gaming site, StumbleUpon pages, etc and try to weed out the ones that are useful. I also get some help from other such as Yellow5, Frogman, Emiliano, etc.

I have only read some of the answers so far, but I want to jump in here and say that I really appreciate your participation in this. As far as FTB goes, I'm bookended by two of my very favorite people here in you and EaglesFan27.

Again, thanks very much for your answers. Great job.

Pumpy - Thanks for the high praise. I am an Pumpy and Eaglesfan27 fan myself.
st.cronin - change it now
Izulde - Yeah, some of that stuff was definitely tough to write.
terpkristin - Thanks for taking that joke lightly. I have sympathy for you pain, but I don't have the empathy since I never broke anything. I will have to remember 'terpkristinitis'.
vtbub - And thanks for taking the time to read through that chapter.

Thanks for the compliments. I apologize for the length because it was not my intent for it to be this long. I copied all the questions and answered them during my free time. I couldn't believe I had reached 19 pages when all was said and done.

I read this last night but was too tired to respond.

Great read. it is nice that everyone has been willing to share some really personal moments that they haven't shared around here before. The story about your brother is sad, but did a lot to illustrate who you are as a person which is what this feature is about.

Thanks for the compliments again. Was second guessing whether I should have answered the question because I didn't know if it would bring back emotions I didn't want to revisit. Glad I did though.

Another great read, thank you. I'm very sorry to hear about your loss.

That's hilarious stuff right there.

Well I was wearing a rayon shirt. You can't just roll up the sleeves on that thing because it was too thin and would just slide down. I thought I looked cool with the watch on the outside, plus it served it's purpose of holding my shirt in place. I still don't see why this is so hilarious.

I hassled Antmeister to give me an answer to 1 question but he wouldn't budge so yesterday was the first time I read it and I'm pretty shocked to see how much he shared. He's usually very reserved so reading that he actually mentioned this woman was something I didn't expect. I think his tea might have been too strong

another gread read. Thanks for fleshing out who Antmeister really is, I sincerely appreciated the heart you put into it.

Sorry if my siblings question shook all those emotions. I really can't fully understand all you've been through, but I sympathize with you.

Thanks for the link to 9 Dragons, it certainly looks interesting. Not sure if you know about it but I had found another free martial arts based MMORPG called Martial Heroes. I just don't have time to get into either game right now as Civ4 is taking way too much of my free time, but I've saved the links for a future try.

I found it kind of odd that 9 Dragons is not in your big database though. You're slipping my friend.

FM

PS: no, I did not speak with Lorena prior to putting my list of questions together. You just struck me as somebody who would struggle in the cold. I guess I guessed right, huh?

PPS: even though it had a bit of a Loren-ish style to it (notice the lack of an "a" to end the name), I liked the attention put into the formatting very much.
