NFL Commentating Looking Great in Offseason

First the news that Cowher is going to be on NBC, and I've heard good things about him in that kind of role. And then I read this...

Is ESPN on the verge of cutting ties with NFL analyst Michael Irvin? One industry source believes the decision has already been made, and that some at the network view the outspoken Irvin as a ticking time bomb, ready to explode into a public-relations nightmare.

Cowher will actually be on CBS. He did a great job at the Super Bowl, just maybe doesn't have the best voice for TV.

I hope that is true about Irvin. He adds nothing to that show.

This is almost to good to be true. I may actually watch the ESPN pregame show again. He's the single biggest reason I avoid ESPN whenver possible during the NFL season. Please, oh, please let this be true.

Woops. I swear what I read said he would be on the Sunday night broadcast team, but I guess I misread or am not remembering it correctly.

Tiki Barber will be on Sunday Night Football replacing Sterling Sharpe.

I really doubt they'll drop Irvin this upcoming year. Maybe next year after he's inducted into the HOF.

I would agree on all of them except Madden. He might be annoying at times but he knows an unbelievable amount of football.

On a side note, I always thought that the word 'commentate' was a bastardization of the word 'comment'. I know that 'commentary' and 'commentator' are derivations of 'comment' but 'commentate' seemed to be an unnecessary back-formation from 'commentator'.

I also know that 'commentate' has passed in to common usage which now makes it "correct" but it still grates on me.

Carry on.

Yeah, there are a lot of idiots, but only one of them impacts what used to be one of my favorite shows to watch. ESPN dumps Irvin, I get an hour or two of my Sunday's back. At least with the rest of the idiot commentators, there is a game going on behind the garbage.

With Irvin being a part of every roundtable discussion, ESPN's pregame show became something I could no longer stand. If he goes and him alone, it'll be a terrific offseason for announcers IMHO.

I don't usually have time to watch him, so he doesn't affect me.

Agreed. Can't even stomach Irvin anymore. NFL Network gets all my love until he's gone.

Madden was the man 20 years ago. Today he's an illiterate geriatric brain dead speaker who has to be reminded that he's supposed to talk about the game thats actually being played instead of a Giants 49ers game from 20 years back.

Madden should never see the inside of a booth again.

Drop madden, Drop Irvan, Drop Sharpe(s) and you'll erase 75% of the lousy personalities that ruin teh game for most people.

Time in the ABC Monday night booth could take anyone and turn them into a babbling moron who tries their damnedest to steer attention away from the game.

NFL | ESPN lets go of Irvin
Sat, 17 Feb 2007 17:21:33 -0800
Barry Horn, of The Dallas Morning News, reports ESPN has parted ways with NFL analyst Michael Irvin, according to ESPN spokesman Bill Hoffheimer. Hoffheimer said Irvin did not violate any contractual morals clause.

Sweet.

This reminds me of when Trev Alberts quit doing College Football stuff on ESPN. Not that Lou Holtz and Mark May have been great or anything, but I am still so glad that Alberts is gone.

That's what I confused with the Cowher story. I didn't realize Sharpe got let go, too.

I agree. And yet, Sterling is the one who gets bumped every couple of years while Shannon remains.
