Help, stupid teacher needs my son to do stupid stuff
My son's engineering teacher wants his students to get the dimensions of five different bars of soap (length, width, and height). I searched on the web, but either I'm too stupid (more likely) or too inebriated to find this. We have Irish Spring in our house, so we have one. Can the community get me the dimensions of four other different bars of soap?
Thanks in advance. |

Cut the single bar into five pieces. Voila: five bars of soap. Measure and submit.

Ummmm...need complete soap bars that are sold. I guess they're creating a soapdish. Beyond buying four other different brands, I'm not sure what other recourse we have. Help FOFC.

Dola,
If any of my teachers assigned that to me, I'd claim I couldn't do it because I don't have bars of soap. It wouldn't be a total lie per se, either, as they really can't expect you to go out and buy 5 bars of soap (or 4, assuming you have one at home), and frankly, I know a lot of people (myself included) who use liquid handsoap and body wash for the shower. Oddly, the only reason I have any bar soap here in my apartment is that it came free when I bought something else (a razor I think). /tk

Thanks so much. You guys are the best.
On a side note, we use liquid soap for most things. The only bar soap we have is for the shower. It's somewhat difficult to get the liquid soap in the crack. |

I'll trade you looking for five bars of soap for trying to construct a model of Uranus from scratch and having lunchroom/recess duty tomorrow.

Why can't your son text or myspace some friends in the class until they come up with five different bars and the dimensions. That takes care of his homework and homework for his friends.
And what is this about Jon scratching uranus? I didn't need to know that. |

No, it's called being resourceful, and establishing a network. Skills that will be far more useful as an adult than the ability to measure 5 bars of soap. Last edited by Tekneek : 02-23-2007 at 05:44 AM. |

Two Sundays ago, my wife and I went to the gym. While we were gone, he hopped onto his laptop to check his email. I told him that he could check his roadrunner email on our desktop through webmail but he still had to get onto his laptop. We told him we were keeping his laptop and controllers for another two weeks since he can't seem to follow our rules. It'll be the end of two weeks this weekend, so he'll get them back. Why he didn't get on our desktop to do this via myspace...we didn't think of it. Quote:
He's learning how to do isometric designs in this class. It's somewhat like architecture, buildings, bridges, etc. He's in a Science Magnet program and it's part of the curriculum. |

What I wouldn't have given for a school like that. The one I attended was so small and limited that we played 9 man football.

Speaking as a teacher, I'm assuming that if I give a homework assignment that a resourceful kid will get help if needed, either from a parent or a friend. That is true of all homework. I can set some guidelines, like, "If you copy your essay from a friend, or if I see two essays that are very similar, you will have to do it over." But in general a homework assignment is usually deemed to be an assignment the student can get help with. After all, I help my daughter with her homework when she needs it. And then Raider's Army provided a more detailed explanation. |

Only name I ever recall it under while I was in school. I think the other must have come afterwards.
