Question Players in sports career text sims

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I'm curious about how people feel about this subject.

This text sim player is a fan of fictional players. Creating a new world that's not like any on earth is empowering, to say the least.

What's happening Good Twin?

I've always preferred text sims that use "real" players. For hockey, I like the idea of building a team of players I like, making lines, learning about real prospects and minor league players. For soccer, 90% of the "real" players might as well be fictional as far as I'm concerned. For football, I guess it's like hockey, I like the idea of adding pieces to a team or building a team of players I like. I'm sure there are a few other reasons too, if I thought about it long enough.

Eventually, as is the nature of sims, if the career goes on for many seasons all of the real players are eventually replaced, but I'm fine with that too. I like having the league's history grounded in reality.

Real players at the beginning, gradually evolving into a fictional universe over time.

Depends. Sometimes I like playing with real players and sometimes I like playing with fictional players. Depends on my mood.

I LIKE TO USE REAL PLAYERS SO I CAN IMAGINE THE LOOKS ON THEIR REAL FACES WHEN I PRETEND THAT I'M WHIPPING THEM AFTER A LOSS

A combination of what H_B and JiMG said. I like starting with real players since I find it's easier to get involved with a new career like that. Instead of learning about 700+ players, I gradually learn about the new ones entering the league each season.

Fictional players and team. Usually no preconceived notions about how a player is suppose to play in that sim.

I also prefer fictional team contact sports, like: Blood Bowl, Crush! Deluxe, Rollerball, Jugging (or whatever the sport was called in the movie "The Blood of Heroes".), etc.

I like the option to have both in both text sims and sports video games. Its nice to play in a universe you know, but it can also be fun to mix things up and experience a whole universe of talent that is new.

FOF (though I'm considering a fictional dynasty) and TPB I immensely prefer historical.

OOTP I stick more or less exclusively to fictional.

I havent found a single football sim that does an adequate job of properly evaluating the players in the NFL, so I prefer fake players Playing with real players just leads to assumptions, and that leads to poor play.

Solo career ... real to start and eventually fictional
Multiplayer ... fictional (in my experiences, too many irrational trades when real players are involved)

Fictional

I find using real players a distraction.
As some one else pointed out, they're abilities usually do not translate well into the sim.

I like real players eventually transitioning to a fictional universe, though the advantages of a fictional universe that I'm writing a dynasty about is that lets me focus more on the team versus the players, which I like better.

Both. Sometimes I'm in the mood to use real players, sometimes fictional. I don't have one strong preference over the other

I like real the first time I play the game so my learning curve for the game is enhanced by my knowledge of the real players. I.E. if I open up a new baseball sim and I see Ryan Howard, Power Hitting: 100/100 and Albert Pujols, Power Hitting: 97/100 ...I can make a pretty good assumption that "Power Hitting" has something to do with home runs. Sometimes, the ratings names in a given game are pretty obscure (Big Play Receiving), and real players can help one understand what they mean.

That being said, once I feel I've translated the game into my brain, I prefer fictional players (and they need to be different fictional players each time).

I like real players to get a feel for the game and to see how their careers evolve.

Prefer fictional players as long as there is not an inordinate amount of Billy Joes or Bubbas.

When I first started playing these games, my preference was for the real universes. Now, I'm a big, big fan of "all-fictional" setups, even fictional teams. I don't mind playing with real players, of course, but I strongly prefer playing with fake ones, just to accumulate my history, my records. Hell, I'd LOVE a presim option in FOF!
