This is exactly why Maximum Football isn't popular in Iran.

Can you really laugh at him or boo him until you research the Iranian's culture and religion? I don't claim to know much about it, but how do we know that the whole culture of Iran doesn't look upon gays differently than we do? This just in: Iran's culture is different from the United States.

I agree to an extent, but there's a line to where something no longer becomes acceptable even if it's part of someone's culture. And that line changes depending on how important an issue is to someone.

Um... yes? Clearly there are homosexuals in Iran. It's funny to the extent that they are in denial of that fact, and offensive to the extent that they are intolerant of it.

I'm pretty sure the "culture of Iran" tends to look favorably upon killing anyone who admits to being gay. Maybe it's just me, but I think that might dissuade people from allowing their homosexual orientation to be public knowledge. Thus an ignorant person might assume that there simply are no homosexuals.

Look, I don't agree with him on this. I think it's dispicable if Iran kills people just because they're gay. But I don't know anything about their culture and how they view this issue. Maybe they agree with Ahmadinejad about this, and maybe they don't. Maybe people aren't as open about being gay as they are here. If the people of Iran don't like what he says then they can elect someone else in two years. All we can do is set a good example here and have them want to emulate us. No matter how dispicable we feel they treat gays doesn't give us the right to invade their country and force our goodness on them.

I must have missed the part where somebody we should invade Iran in order to bring equal rights to Iranian gays.

That sort of happened after the invasion of Afghanistan. Maybe the president would have more big-tent support for his policies if he did spin it in such a manner...

Edit to add: am wondering if BW's approval of Iran is up or down because of Ahmadinejad's statement about gays

I'm just amazed that any part of BW's mind thought this was a good idea for a thread ... nor even a worthwhile idea for a thread.

Well, he is in he U.S. visiting Columbia U. today, and making these statements in an open Q and A forum. That is the kind of thing that used to be covered in threads around here and made this place interesting.

heh heh heh, thats funny. They can elect someone else in two years? What ? a mullah? No matter who gets voted in, they all have to follow the dictates of the Clerics.
If someone openly publicized that they were of a different sexual orientation they would be dodging rocks and bullets in the short time they had to live..

BW - when even the president of Columbia University is busy condemning the guy, anything we could say or do here is pretty much beating a dead horse.

On the other hand, some of what he said was interesting. He REALLY tempered down the Holocaust denial stuff. Leading me to believe that a lot of the BS is for public consumption for the hardliners at home.

It was the most unusual response I have ever heard to allegations of gay-bashing.

I imagined him waving at the camera saying "these aren't the gays you are looking for."

There is a lot more coverage about homosexuals from the Middle East in Detroit, with the large number of Middle Eastern Immigrants here. Your life is at risk if you are a homosexual in this culture. Homosexual Middle Eastern men in the Detroit area have to go way underground else risk life and family. Interesting topic for discussion, though I'm unsure of if it should be here.

Why not? Look at some of the crap thats been covered here in the last 7 or so years. I think any topic is fair game, well, except for necrophiliac bestiality..

It is fair game, I feel that the topic wouldn't be served with any meaningful discourse here. Hopefully I will be proved incorrect.

Wouldn't it be simpler for them to just leave the community? Being in Detroit isn't like being in Iran.. you can simply move to Chicago or any other random city instead. And I understand if they don't want to leave the religion and culture altogether.. but there must be some more liberal branch of Islam somewhere in this country.

Now yeah it would suck to be leaving their family.. but when the only other alternatives are to either completely repress who you are or risk being murdered, it doesn't seem that bad in comparison.
