Internet goes down right when she....
uses Bitcomet. any ideas as to why this might occur? Could it be triggering some sort of firewall action or something?

You need to make sure you throttle your upload speed. Sometimes it clogs your upstream bandwidth in essence blocking any requests you send out making it appear that the whole thing is down.
...or does you modem drop the link light?
