Veteran's Day

Just a moment of thanks.

I'm not American, but both my grandfathers were in the Indian army, and dealt with the kind of thing I never have, never could, and probably never will. All politics aside, a thanks for doing a job that most of us simply won't to vets everywhere.

I'm thankful today, and I'll still be thankful when I wake up around 10am tomorrow morning since I'm off.

My father was in the Army, as were both of my grandfathers. I do appreciate the sacrifice that all three of them made, especially serving in a time of war like they all did.

Since I started researching my family tree, I've found several people who have faught in American wars. All of them, in fact, from the War of 1812 (have not found anyone in the Revolutionary War yet) to World War II.

I was in the Army for 8.5 years (1998-2006). Wife is actually in Iraq right now and comes home for 3 weeks of R&R tomorrow evening. Then she goes back for another 11 months.

So do I and I am actually happy about. The rest of the base will be off tomorrow so no stupid telephone calls, no stupid appointments, no bullshit meetings. I can actually get a whole lot of work done tomorrow.

Oh yeah no traffic to or from the base.

Our office is closed (the bond market is closed), but I'm in NYC for meetings. About to embark on a totally awesome 8:30 to 7:00 day.

I work for a company that doesn't get Veteran's Day off. We design and build the main coolant pumps for Naval Vessels.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
— John McCrae
