Off the top of my head my top albums this year were the Fratellis, White Stripes, Shins, Spoon and Arcade Fire. I've got to think about songs some more. All in all a pretty good year.

Streetlight Manifesto's new CD was my favorite of the year... next best was probably Radiohead.

I didn't buy many albums this year, but the best was We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank by Modest Mouse.

Honestly, I think I bought a grand total of *two* new albums in 2007 (though I did get lots of older ones), and downloaded Radiohead's new one for free.
Out of these three albums, I'd rank them: 1) The Coral - Roots & Echoes 2) Robert Wyatt - Comicopera 3) Radiohead - In Rainbows Song of the year would probably be Cobwebs, by the Coral.

The Coral LP was great. I heard that last month and have been really happy with them. I like "Who's Gonna Find Me" as my best song. I'll check out Cobwebs, I don't remember it offhand.

My favourite track changes each time I listen to it. 'Who's Gonna Find Me' is one of my faves though. Fun to play along with on the bass too.

No. It wasn't a very good list at all. I mean, I was surprised there was many indie-esque bands on there that there were. It's obviously a ton of stuff that they play heavily and so, if you're not tone deaf I wouldn't expect you to have heard it.
With a teenage brother nearby, I hear a lot of fare that I otherwise wouldn't of the pop variety. |

Will someone explain her to me? Her music is awful, she is always off key, even with the tons of technology they obvious use on her. I just don't get MIA. |

Her most recent album is awesome because she's insane. (I mean, musically..like Fiona Apple is insane. Ok, that's different. Fiona is quite possibly nuts and I love her all the same..) And the message of third world democracy and "you fear us, but you basically just want to kill us, steal our land and take our money..." is pretty powerful. She could be so much better if she were to commit to being mainstream. And she knows it. So the fact that she goes the route she does smacks of youthful insolence to some degree, but...I really do like that she seems to mean what she says and wants to use her music as a tool to give a voice to those who don't have one..while still being super creative in the process. But that all being said, I can totally see why she'd not appeal to most folks. And she's doing it on purpose.

Interesting take. All I've heard is Paper Planes, and while I didn't like it at all, it left me with the feeling that I might like the rest of her stuff. Oddly enough, since Regina Spektor was mentioned, the opposite was true for her -- I liked the song I heard, but it left me with the feeling that I probably wouldn't like the rest of it. Pretty weird. |

I have tried with M.I.A. about 5 times as hard as I've tried with groups/artists people recommend to me. I just don't hear anything good in there at all.
Also, I know for a fact if she weren't Sri Lankan no one would have ever given a shit. |

I didn't like her at first, because my first exposure was "On The Radio" and I just didn't have any use for that song. But then I started to look more into her catalog for albums like Soviet Kitsch and even other songs on Begin to Hope and Apres Moi is just good stuff, as is 20 Years of Snow from that album. Her voice is decidedly strange and I wouldn't even call her that great a singer. But she's an above average piano player and her classical training -- or perhaps my growing up listening to it non-stop -- gives pop musicians a leg up when I hear them incorporate it. (I don't really have much use for Alicia Keys, because she's not daring enough in her songwriting..) So yeah. I like her. And she has that song that I think I mentioned with Sondre Lerche -- who by the way, is really coming into his own as a songwriter -- called "Hell No" from the Dan In Real Life soundtrack. And I love it. It's just extremely well done.

I think people would give a shit. But if she weren't and were say, just a white girl who grew up in England rather than a girl of Sri Lankan descent, that her entire shtick would be different and thus, it would render the point pretty moot. She'd probably be more impactful if she just sold out, rather than saying caustic things to try to push the envelope and to act like she's some sort of freedom fighter. I do think that she's not as subversive as she thinks she is, because the bottom line is, the people who praise her work are really digging deep for meaning in it. But she's going to need to get some polish to her by the next LP or people are going to grow tired of what she's doing. But I'm not seeing it. I think she'll keep it up and will be less relevant as it goes on. I like her, but I do find her stuff grating after a few listens and you really have to be trying to dig deep to enjoy it, it's not music you can enjoy on the surface...and even with that, the first time I heard Kala..I hated it. So it sorta grows on you after a while. Last edited by Young Drachma : 12-26-2007 at 04:02 PM. |

That's an interesting claim. I've felt the same way about The Kite Runner and Afghanistan, but I didn't think people cared about Sri Lanka that much. Were you just trying to be bold when you said you know it for a fact, or do you have some kind of evidence? |

I read this thread and all I can say is that you guys are all infinitely more cool than I am. I think I've seen about two mainstream artists on these lists, and that's likely stretching it.

I used to buy a lot of music but the past couple of years I've sort of stayed to my normal favorite music groups or what has become of them.
These are my favorites of what I got this year, in no actual order. Jimmy Eat World, Chase This Light - Not as good as Futures of Bleed American, but wasn't a big letdown after two of my favorite albums of all time. I really hope they go back to their Clarity days personally... Matchbox Twenty, Exile on Mainstream - Considering I had my copy of their first hit album (Yourself or Someone Like You) about a year before they got big and played it non stop and then was let down by Mad Season and More Then You Think You Are) I wasn't expecting much from the 6 new songs on this CD, but I enjoyed the new music from them, reminded me more of their older stuff. Relient K, Five Score and Seven Years Ago AND Let it Snow... Let it Reindeer - Great albums, these guys really just have a lot of fun playing and can mix punk, pop, and Christian in a very palatable music experience. Oh and their Christmas album this year was just great. Everyone that I had listen to it loved it. New Found Glory, From the Screen to your Stereo, Part II - I have a thing for poppunk covers of 80s-00s music and this just builds up my collection. Some very good tracks. Cartel, Self Titled - Pretty good album, it sort of grew on me while I listened to it. I could see these guys end of a pretty popular group someday. The Rocket Summer, Do You Feel - I said this the first time I heard this kid when he was like 19 years old, Bruce Avery is the next Dave Grohl / Ben Folds. This kid put together three albums did all the music and recording before most people do anything in their life. Do You Feel was such a great happy feeling album, a lot like his 2003 album Calendar Days. He's just such an amazing talented artist. I'm looking forward to seeing him live one of these days. It's great that he finally got his first major label release. Fall Out Boy, Infinity on High - Was a good album, I think overall it was better then From Under the Cork Tree, but there is no song that stands out as Sugar We're Going Down did on FUtCT. Dashboard Confessional, The Shade of the Poison Trees - Solid Effort by one of my favorite artists (yeah I like singer songwriters that can play instruments, sue me... ) William Tell, You Can Hold Me Down - Former lead guitarist for Something Corporate put out a great first effort with a number of songs that I loved singing to. Can wait to see how much more he progresses after this. That's pretty much it for this year. Doubt many will agree with me on these and 1/2 of them most of you have never heard of but recommend checking them out if you have time. |

Heard almost all of those. But I don't really like guy singers who sound like girls, which eliminates a lot of those. Or screamo. Or something.
But Matchbox Twenty was good and they've had a solid run, no doubt, since their days as Tabitha's Secret. JEW to me has really started to have all of their stuff sound the same. That's why I got tired of them. I can't see them going back to their Clarity/Lucky Denver Mint days...because I think they've made too much off of the whole pop thing. I got into them off of that LP though and was happy to see when they "made it" and I even liked Bleed American. |

I know it's not English, but don;t overlook Marie-Mai's Dangereuse Attraction as a great album.
Want an example? Here's one of her songs on YouTube: Marie-Mai - Mentir (Mentir means "to "lie" in English) hxxp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwzPPiwuAV8

I have the same top 3 but in a different order. 1. Jay Z - American Gangster 2. Lupe Fiasco - The Cool 3. Kanye West - Graduation Jay Z barely passes Lupe because Jay really put together a great album. Lupe's album was way better then his first and I really like the first one. Kanye album was the best until the previous two dropped.

I'm getting old. I tried to listen to many of these bands to see if I liked them, and they just seemed kind of... meh. Absolutely nothing to write home about.
I did pick up a Band of Horses song (Ghost in My House) which I like (though lyrically it could be a bit deeper). I'm actually looking forward to listening to William Tell (I really liked Something Corporate's first album) and The Rocket Summer based on dangarion's recommendations. As for my favorite new music this year... man, not much. Fountains of Wayne's "Traffic and Weather" was kind of a disappointment, though "New Routine" might be my favorite song of the year. That's about the only purchase that really sticks out for me though.

I added more bands to my list after listening to a few more albums and realizing that I made some pretty egregious misses the first time. Most notably, Kings of Leon. They've emerged as one of my favourite bands hands down and that's all from devouring their catalog of stuff this year. They're just awesome.
I put together a playlist of a single track from each that I thought was worth listening to as well. The only one I couldn't get my hands on was Devendra Benhart, but he has a link on his site that lets you listen before you buy, presumably. I like the song Carmensita. +1 I'm always excited by these threads thinking that I am going to find some good new stuff to listen to and always come away disappointed. I'll keep trying though since I'm sure something will eventually strike a chord (sorry) with me. |

It would probably help to know what you all listen to. These sorts of threads are generally the same sort of indie fare being thrown around over and over. The more niche stuff gets ignored or people forget to mention bands too.
One way to find new stuff might be a month-long trial subscription to Rhapsody music service. I've used Rhapsody for at least four years now and it's stellar, because you can listen to stuff basically as it comes out, discover old stuff from bands you've forgotten and it's a lot cheaper than buying lots of CDs. I highly recommend it for folks looking to branch out because they're tired of the same ol', same ol'...because I've been using music services like that for years now and it's how I'm able to discover so much new stuff. But even if you're solidly into one sort of genre, there surely is something there for you.

Mari-eMai's Mentir, which I link to above, is a Quebecois singer who's song is pretty good, despite the overly reliance on speed riffs at times,. When you get bored of American music, its time to check out something else, and that's Marie-Mai.

For college students (or those with a .edu addy), use Ruckus instead of Rhapsody. Its a free subscription service (you have to pay to put them on a device, but playing on the computer is free). Its a little difficult to use (re: fugly), but its free. www.ruckus.com |

I always have a hard time listing bands that I do listen to since they cross a number of genre boundaries. I was introduced to Great Big Sea and Black 47 by FOFC, so that was nice. Often played music from my iPod include Dance Hall Crashers, Fallout Boy, Blue October, Matchbox 20, Blues Traveler, Catch 22, Eve 6, Flyleaf, Lacuna Coil, etc. Then of course there is the standard GnR, Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Metallica type bands that most people have floating around their music players. It is hard to pick a genre when my shuffle goes from the Beatles to Metallica to Steel Pulse to Ladysmith Black Mambazo to Dadawa to Dropkick Murphys to Korn to Imogen Heap to Canadian Brass to Paul Simon. I really do think I must be getting old and unable to appreciate new music. I picked about 15-20 songs at random out of this thread (skipping the Jay-Z and Kanye West stuff I know I don't like) and was amazed that if I hadn't known better I would have thought they were all the same band. |
