I got real excited when i heard about the Speed Racer movie, and doubly so when i heard the Wachowskis (sp?) are doing it. But the trailers look AWFUL. However, it did lead me to look up some old episodes on Youtube and show them to my daughters, who ate it up. You guys need to watch "the deadliest race". I had completely forgotten about the spastic brother and his pet monkey. And the campy voice overs. not to mention the fact that we have a cartoon for children where car drivers routinely plunge to their deaths. No wonder I loved this show.

Finally got around to putting a list together of things I'm certainly looking forward to this year-

(Although I numbered 'em, this is not the order of importance)

1. The Other Boleyn Girl Feb. 29
Dir: Justin Chadwick
Eric Bana, Scarlett Johansso, Natalie Portman

IMDB Plot Outline: Two sisters contend for the affection of King Henry VIII.

I will probably see this in theaters, because it gets released at the end of this month and there hasn't been anything worth seeing in a few weeks. Oh yea, plus I love Natalie Portman and Scarlett is a winner as well.

2. Valkyrie Oct. 3
Dir: Bryan Singer
Tom Cruise, Stephen Fry, Eddie Izzard, Bill Nighy

IMDB Plot Outline: Based on actual events, a plot to assassinate Hitler is unfurled during the height of WWII.

Saw this preview I think when I saw No Country... and immediately got excited. Like him or not, Tom Cruise is responsible for a number of great movies over the past 25 years, and I'm always ready to watch him work, especially in a role like this, which suits him better than his last attempt (Lions for Lambs). Singer's no chump, either.

3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Nov. 26
Dir: David Fincher
Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton

IMDB Plot Outline: Tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences.

Pitt and Blanchett team up again, with Fight Club & Zodiac's David Fincher under center. Saying I'm very excited would be an understatement, which feels like I'll be setting myself up for disappointment, but alas.

4. Burn After Reading Sep. 26
Dir: Coen Brothers
Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, John Malkovich

IMDB Plot Outline: A disk containing the memoirs of a CIA agent ends up in the hands of two unscrupulous gym employees who attempt to sell it.

This just has the Coen's written all over it, doesn't it? So Clooney makes sense, and then you add Pitt and with their chemistry in all of the Ocean movies, this feels like the Can't-Miss of the year for me. Woot.

5. Semi-Pro Feb. 29
Dir: Kent Alterman
Will Ferrell, Woody Harrelson, Andre 3000, Maura Tierney
IMDB Plot Outline: Jackie Moon, the owner-coach-player of the American Basketball Association's Flint Michigan Tropics, rallies his teammates to make their NBA dreams come true.

This just feels as absurd as Anchorman, and I'm thrilled.

6. Quantum of Solace (Bond 22) Nov. 7
Dir: Marc Forster
Daniel Craig, Dame Judi Dench

IMDB Plot Outline: Not available.

They couldn't have picked a more terrible name for the movie. But, I liked Casino Royale and it'll be interesting to see if there can actually be two Bond movies back-to-back that are good. Forster directed Monster's Ball & Stranger than Fiction.

7. My Blueberry Nights Feb (limited)
Dir: Kar Wai Wong
Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Norah Jones, David Strathaim, Rachel Weisz

IMDb Plot Outline: A young woman (Jones) takes a soul-searching journey across America to resolve her questions about love while encountering a series of offbeat characters along the way.

Not exactly sure when or if this will be in theaters at all around my parts, but again, a bunch of actors I like. Not thrilled about Norah Jones getting the lead though.

8. Iron Man May 2
Dir: Jon Favreau
Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Dashon Howard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges

IMDb Plot Outline: When Tony Stark is forced to create a life support suit to keep him alive after an accident he decides to use the technology in his suit to fight crime.

Great supporting cast and inspiring lead choice with Downey, who is one of my modern favorites. Also, Favreau is an interesting choice here, he's like the poor man's version of when Kevin Smith was in the process of making Superman Lives, a comedic director turned comic book director. By the way, I'm not wasting my time writing out all of the info and such for The Dark Knight, because everyone knows about it and wants to see it, it's a given. However,

9. The Incredible Hulk June 13
Dir: Louis Leterrier
Ed Norton, Robert Downey Jr., Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, William Hurt

IMDb Plot Outline: Physicist Bruce Banner takes flight in order to understand -- and hopefully cure -- the condition that turns him into a monster.

The last Hulk movie sucked, and I don't know if I have any faith in this one, because Leterrier is only responsible for The Transporter series, but I like this cast a lot and should be an ok summer movie at the least.

10. Get Smart Jun. 20
Dir: Peter Segal
Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, The Rock, Alan Arkin, Bill Murray

IMDb Plot Outline: Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 for CONTROL, battles the forces of KAOS with the more-competent Agent 99 at his side.

I remember watching old reruns of this show as a kid, so for nostalgic purposes I'm reasonably giddy. Plus, that's a fun comedic cast, with the icing being our old friend Bill.

11. Zack and Miri Make a Porno 2008
Dir: Kevin Smith
Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks

IMDb Plot Outline: Lifelong platonic friends Zack (Rogen) and Miri (Banks) look to solve their respective cashflow problems by making an adult film together. As the cameras roll, however, the duo begin to sense that they may have more feelings for each other than they previously thought.

This just looks great. Rogen is golden and teaming him with Kevin Smith is going to be sweet. Should be a late '08 release.

I hoping "The Grand" lives up to the hype. The buzz is that it is a Spinal Tap treatment of pro poker. It's got an impressive cast: Woody Harrelson, Shannon Elizabeth, Dennis Farina, Werner Herzog as someone who has to kill something everyday, Ray Romano, and a bunch of others.

I'm excited about:

Synecdoche, New York (Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut / he also wrote it)
Run, Fat Boy, Run (Simon Pegg stars)
The Happening (I'm a big M.Night fan)
Get Smart
The Dark Knight
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Fitzgerald is my favorite writer)
Star Trek (I'm praying they do it justice)
