don't forget they had couple high school kids helping

Oh and in The Goonies they had a mexican lady cleaning the house which might be the source of Slaters later frustration at cleaning tables.

Agreed. Plus, my understanding is that Chester Copperpot was more of an intellectual/research type than an Indiana Jones, dodging boulders type. He just wasn't cut out for that line of work sadly.
