1980 Predictions

Baltimore Gothams
(102-52 2nd straight FOOL Championship)

From the award winning marketing department that has brought you such beauts at 'Quick from the gate, in seventy-eight' and 'One more time, in seventy-nine' comes the 1980 slogan "Let's do it again, in seventy-ten!"...While the team interviews for it's new PR guy, allow me to give you a preview of the Baltimore Gothams version 8.0

We basically tore a page out the EA Sports playbook and re-packaged Gothams version 7.9 in a shinny new box, added some obscure new feature that no-one will use and created as much internet hype as possible to brainwash the general public into believing they are getting an entirely new product when in reality it's the same product as the past 3 or 4 years....not that that's a bad thing. Whereas EA Sports recycles mostly garbage, recycling the Gothams squad should produce favorable results.
The Gothams are the 2-time defending FOOL champs, might as well get that out of the way now, as it is not often a team can claim that...BUT we realize that this is also the same team that was an also-ran the previous two season and through luck, good fortune, smoke and mirrors and deals with the unholy underworld bosses, managed to outpace superior teams in 78&79.

So here is our lineup...

Catcher- Josh Robinson is a two-time playoff MVP. The man is a pressure situation machine!!! (.500 4hrs 16RBIs in 13 career playoff games) He's not to shabby in the regular season either. A .310 career average and VORPs of 27.6 and 34.0 the past two seasons. He just signed a 5 yr extension to stay with the Gothams.

1B-27yr old Kenny Roberts finally got a shot to play in the big leagues after spending 7 seasons in the minors. He responded hitting .345 with a 27.9 VORP in a platoon role versus righties. Sam Mcindoe who has 7 post season at-bats (.313) will make his regular season debut platooning versus lefties.

2B-Mainstay Greg Moore will once again man 2b. A .274 career hitter is usually good for 10-15 hrs, all at a very cheap price. Nothing fancy, but very consistent.

3B- Ignacio Costa was rewarded for his breakout season with a 5 year contract extension. Last season he hit .307 with 20hrs and 72RBIs. This is just the tip of the iceberg for this young stud who will hit cleanup this year.

SS- The only change to the lineup will come at SS and the #8 spot in the lineup. With Richard Tabarrci asking for too much money, the team decided to let him walk to give the sweet swinging Bob Booth and Paul Wagner a chance to platoon. Super-utility Steven Harris will also see some time at short. Both Booth and Wagner should his .270 with very good defense.

LF- Mauro Suarez (.291avg .411 OBP in an off year)...is the on-base king. He will continue to bat second versus righties while speedster Leonard Pierce will play versus lefties He has a .307 career average 89SB and 23.7VORP in 410 career ABs

CF-Domigo Sanchez. Our #3 hitter. Also just signed a 5 year contract extension. He hit .296 with 19hrs and 66RBIs with a 24.4 VORP. He platooned most of his career, but will now start playing full time.

RF- Thomas Ewing "slumped" to .280 last season with 84Sb. A career .308 hitter has averaged 36.8 VORP over his carrer.
Arguably one the greatest leadoff hitters in FOOL history, he has 378 SB after his first 5 seasons and is the only FOOL to ever swipe 100 bags in one season.

Starting Pitching-
Mike Brown (16-5 2.50), Ivan Flores (14-8 2.54), David Lewis (19-6 2.21), Xinpeng Tien (13-5 3.54) and Harry Mason (14-10 3.02). All 5 starters made the Allstar team last year, and all 5 return again this year. Mason will move to the bullpen to make room for FA signing Floyd Yarbrough.

Bullpen.
The bullpen is also very similar to last season. Allstar Closer Richardo Villegas is back with a 5 yr extension looking to prove his 1.74era and 38 saves was not a fluke.
Nick Duncan (2.50) and Elroy Hensley (1.34) are back as our lefty/righty setup men and Bryan Taylor and Jose Vargas join Harry Mason in the middle relief roles.

This is the same team...there is enough talent to win again, but the rest of the division is tougher and possibly hungrier. Once again the division will not be determined who is better, but by who is luckier! *crosses fingers*

Prediction 92-62. (2nd place)
Whether or not we win the division depends on if Brooklyn can win 93 this season. Personally, I think they will.

Well...

I was *going* to write a season preview, but I've spent all day at work trying to get a fscking 802.11N adapter working on a bootable USB linux stick. And failing miserably. And I have to go out to dinner with my father in law tonight.

So no preview and I might not be around for the sim!

Um. My team in a nutshell: Almost the same as last year. We'll be second or third.

The Black Sox will be (mostly) overpaid and terrible.

I started to do one, then got busy at work. In short lots of new faces this year. If young staff develops we have a great shot. If not well it we will fight to be above .500

my pitching staff is not what championship teams are made of. oooof. hitting? i got some All Stars, so hopefully i get some other guys who turn into All Stars and i have a whole bunch of All Stars.

i'm hoping my decision to not trade OF Zambrano to Chief Rum for starting pitching was a wise choice.

We'll see. All I know is I have all these starters still on my team. One of my guys last year (and all of my starters were good), is in the pen this year, and every starting pitcher on my AAA team can start in FOOL. So I still need to move them.

I am also not as deep in the OF, as I liked, so having Zambrano would have helped. Oh well...hopefully it works out for both of us.
