2017 Recruiting

PIPELINE

Our Pipeline states are NC, VA, GA, FL, TX, TN, and MD.

Major Needs

Fullback: I could use better than I'm going to have after this season.

Wide Receiver: I'm graduating two this year and two next year, so after taking a year off from recruiting WR's, its time to get back to it.

Tight End: If I can find a 4* TE to bring in, its a huge priority. A 3* one... eh, I've got two that will be around awhile.

Defensive Tackle: I need 1 for depth with two guys graduating this year and one next year(with a RS freshman and two true freshmen, just one would be fine).

Outside Linebacker: I have 7 on my roster, 2 graduate this year, 2 graduate next year, and I'm only really excited about one of the other guys that'll be left afterwards.

Cornerback: I am losing 1 this year and 2 next year, that'll leave 4 on the roster, bringing in one guy to redshirt this year and keep the chain of improved upper classmen starting would be good. Not a huge need, but I can usually find good CB's anyway.

Minor Needs

Offensive Line: I only have 3 upperclassmen on the O-line, but, I need to recruit 4* players if I can find them.

Free Safety: Minor need as my starter is a soph, but my backup is a junior, if I want a redshirt year then I need to get one this year.

Strong Safety: Both my starters are soph's, if I wait til next year to start looking it could get tight.

2017 NC State Recruiting Ratings

Changes from last year are noted.

Academic Prestige: G
Campus Lifestyle: VG
Coach Experience: EX
Coach Prestige: GR
Conference Prestige: EX
Championship Contender: EX
Athletic Facilities: EL

Pro Factory: EX
Program Stability: EL (up from EX)

EL = Elite
EX = Excellent
GR = Great
VG = Very Good

I would have hoped a national title would have at least given me excellent prestige as a coach. But I can't really complain with 3 elite ratings and 5 more excellent ones.

There were not nearly as many 5* players interested in me as I expected. One interesting thing to note though, is that we only have 10 seniors on our team. So we're not really thin at a lot of positions, mostly i'm recruiting for Juniors to try to give guys a redshirt year. Next year we'll have 15 seniors, and the year after 18... I expect more interest in more positions then.

Recruiting

FS Kenneth Hodges is the #1 overall recruit in the nation. I want him, and I'm thrilled to see he has two of my "elite" ratings as "very high" importance.

I get most of my scholarship offers out, but with only 10 guys graduating this year, I'm spending more time on my 5* recruits from day 1.

Week 1

#1 NC State at Marshall

I didn't realize this was on the road, oops heh. We're rated 89 OVR, an improvement over last year's title team. 88 Offense, 92 Defense. Marshall is rated 60 OVR(62 O/62 D). Time to see how my new starters, espiciall at QB and RB, pan out.

Well, we run the opening kickoff back 60 yards to the Marshall 40. Kellar throws a 11 yard pass on his first play. A few plays later, Stewart gets his first career touchdown on a 23 yard off tackle run.

I decide to play this one all the way out, after running out to a 14-0 lead but stalling a bit and only leading 17-7 midway through the 2nd Quarter. We got it together though and I've gotten more comfortable with what Kellar and Stewart are capable of.

Keller: 17-23, 182 yards, 3 TD/1 INT
Stewart: 25 carries, 216 yards, 3 tD
Moore: 6 rec, 43 yards
Dave Johnson: 4 rec, 41 yards

Holley, Dan Johnson, and Stewart each had 2 catches, one for a TD for each.

#1.

Recruiting

We don't lose anyone to "instant signings" by other teams this year, a great sign, as that's been happening to a couple of players every year lately.

We're going a very, very aggressive route this year, I'm willing to spend almsot all my time every week on the 5* guys we have our eye on, as long as we have a shot at them, instead of spreading things out and trying to land a more sizable class. I would like to land 15-17 players, but, I'll take 10 to replace my 10 graduating ones if they're all 5* and a 4*.

Week 2

#16 Fresno State (0-0) at #1 NC State (1-0)

Fresno State is rated 74 overall, similar to the other mid-major schools that we played last year. We expect them to be tougher than rated, but expect to win too.

We struggle quite a bit in the first quarter. Fresno state has a safety with a 95 speed rating, and he is EVERYWHERE. On my first drive he single handedly sent us 3 and out, 1 sack and two tackles on running plays. I scored first, a field goal, but Fresno got a TD and led 6-3 after one. I speed things up on offense, no more play action, more runs up the middle to wear down the defense, and we took over the game, leading 20-6 at the half. I thought we were going to run away with it at this point, but FSU scored to open the 3rd quarter to make it 20-13. I score quickly and its 27-13.

Fresno State scores late in the 3rd and its 27-20 and I'm having a hard time shaking these guys. We're forced to punt, and Fresno State has a chance to tie. We finally come up with the big play we need, a pick returned 60 yards for a TD. We add on one more TD late and pull it out.

I was chatting w/ my sister when the game ended and didn't get the stats recorded. Kellar threw for 190 yards, 1 TD/2 INT, while Stewart ran 30 times for 220 yards and 3 TDs. He broke a 52 yard TD run and was able to run the ball consistantly.

Maryland (1-0) at #1 NC State (2-0)

Maryland is rated 60 overall. This is the first ACC game for both of us.

Yeah, if Stewart stays healthy we're looking at a Heisman I think.

Keller: 13-18, 265 yards, 3 TD/0 INT
Stewart: 26 carries, 215 yards, 5 TD
Dave Johnson: 5 rec, 139 yards, 2 TD
Moore: 4 rec, 78 yards

Recruiting

The 5* Guard we're going after is from Florida and Florida and FSU have both overtaken us for him. We've got him visiting this week and hope he doesn't want to stay near home so badly that we have no shot.

Week 4

#22 North Carolina (2-0, 1-0 ACC) at #1 NC State (3-0, 1-0 ACC)

UNC is rated 84 OVR(83 O/85 D), probably one of the best 2 or 3 teams we'll face all season. Their ACC win was over defending ACC Coastal winners Georgia Tech.

The start to this one is terrifying. Our offense can't move the ball at all. UNC puts together a great drive to go up 7-0, and after our 2nd straight punt, they drive for a field goal and lead 10-0. We throw an INT and its UNC's ball in our territory, we're seriously looking at being down 17-0 early in the 2nd quarter.

We get the game changing play we need with 5:13 left in the 2nd. SS Ball picks off a pass and takes it 67 yards to the house to make it 10-7 UNC. The game completely changes after that play, and we go on a 24-0 run to take a 24-10 lead before UNC scores again. They get a field goal late in the 3rd, and a touchdown with 15 seconds left in the game, but its too late by then, and we get our 2nd straight win over North Carolina.

Keller: 10-16, 151 yards, 1 TD/2 INT
Stwart: 23 carries, 111 yards, 2 TD
Dave Johnson: 4 rec, 50 yards, 1 TD

Still #1.. in the coaches poll. Wisconsin has been #1 for a couple weeks in the media poll, we're #2 there. Wisconsin is actually #3 in the coaches poll(Notre Dame #2), we'll see how things shake out if we're still all undefeated when the BCS rankings are first released.

Following the win over the rival, a 2 TD, 111 yard performance, freshman HB Cedric Stewart is now #1 in the Heisman race. He's got 746 rushing yards, and 13 rushing TDs... through 4 games.

Recruiting

Our first recruit signs following the North Carolina win. 5* JUCO WR Bobby Horton signs with the Wolfpack!

Week 5

Virginia Tech(3-0, 2-0 ACC) at #1 NC State (4-0, 2-0 ACC)

Virginia Tech is trying to improve, and is back up to 77 OVR(79 O/78 D). This one isn't a guarenteed win.

The defense is stellar from play 1. We give up 3 points and its really not because of a ton of turnovers, though we did get 2 INTs. Va Tech just couldn't move the ball at all. We led 14-3 with 3 minutes left in the 1st half before scoring two quick TDs, taking a 28-3 lead into the locker room and controlling the game totally.

Keller: 19-27, 257 yards, 3 TD/1 INT
Stewart: 27 carries, 207 yards, 3 TD
Holley: 5 rec, 70 yards
Dave Johnson: 4 rec, 76 yards, 2 TD

Wisconsin loses, we're #1, Notre Dame #2 in both polls.

Stewart has 953 yards and 16 TD's through 5 games. He's on pace for ~2250 yards and 38 TDs. I doubt that will continue.

Recruiting

A couple second tier recruits came to visit during the Virginia Tech game, and one of them, 4* DT Cameron Moses, signs with us this week.

Still #1 coming off the bye.

Recruiting

We get a soft commit from our #1 recruit, 5* FS Kenneth Hodges.

unfortunately, we lose one of our top recruits too. 5* CB Stephen Johnson signs with Oklahoma after visiting them.

I add 2 3* CB's and put them in my top 10, both will be getting significant amounts of love along with the remaining top targets.

Week 7

Clemson (3-2, 2-2 ACC) at #1 NC State (5-0, 3-0 ACC)

Clemson, despite the record, is rated 84 OVR(88 O/80 D) and we expect quite a challenge.

Boy do we get a challenge. Each team scores twice in the first half. We get two TDs and they get two field goals though and its 14-6 NC State. We've gotten our TD's on big plays(38 yard TD pass and a long option run from Stewart) while Clemson has put together solid drives that we've stopped before they can get in the end zone.

We score 23 seconds into the second half, long run, two long passes, TD, and its 21-6. Our defense comes up big and we can turn this into a blowout with another score. But, we have to punt, and Clemson makes it a game again with a TD with 15 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

21-13 going into the 4th, and we're just unable to move the ball anymore. KEller throws a key INT allowing Clemson to put together one more TD drive with 1:48 to go in the game. We get a HUGe stop on the 2 point conversion and its 21-19. We recover the onside kick, but can't get a first down and have to punt. Clemson gets into FG range but as they're lining up for an unlikely 54 yard FG, time expires. Whew.

Keller: 11-17, 194 yards, 2 TD/2 INT
Stewart: 19 carries, 148 yards, 1 TD
Holley: 3 rec, 34 yards, 1 TD
Stewart: 3 rec, 53 yards
Dave Johnson: 1 rec, 38 yards, 1 TD

Still #1.

Stewart is still #1 for the Heisman. He made the tackle on both of Keller's INT's. Amusingly, his stat line on the heisman board for his last game is: "2 tkls, TD" Kinda left out the ~150 yards rushing. 1101 yards rushing, 17 rushing TDs

Recruiting

We get one more soft commit this week in 5* G Jeremy Perkins.

Week 8

#1 NC State (6-0, 4-0 ACC) at Wake Forest (4-2, 2-2 ACC)

Wake is rated 64 overall.

Keller is hurt in the 2nd quarter and is going to miss 4 weeks. We return the favor by knocking their QB out for 12 weeks in the 3rd quarter. Our backup, Josh Novak, is rated 88, same as Keller, and will be a fine replacement.

This one is a laugher, we score 28 before they manage a field goal, and blow them out.

Novak: 9-13, 158 yards, 3 TD/0 INT
Keller: 8-10, 83 yards, 1 TD/0 INT
Stewart: 23 carries, 141 yards, 2 TD
Dave Johnson: 4 rec, 96 yards, 2 TD

Still #1.

Recruiting

In an unexpected turn, we don't land our soft commit from last week, but, 5* OLB Michael Young bypasses the soft commit altogether and hard commits to the Wolfpack!

In fact, 5* G Jeremy Perkins signs with UCF after visiting them last week. Doh.

Two new soft commits this week. JUCO OLB Michael thomas, another 5* guy, soft commits to the Pack, while 3* FB Carl Whitlock is on the verge of signing with us as well.

2017 Week 10 ACC Standings

Atlantic Division

1. NC State 7-0 (5-0)
2. Florida State 6-1 (5-1)
3. Clemson 4-4 (3-3)
4. Wake Forest 5-3 (3-3)
5. Maryland 2-5 (1-5)
6. Boston College 2-6 (0-5)

Coastal Division

1. Miami 8-0 (6-0)
2. Virginia Tech 5-2 (3-1)
3. Virginia 6-2 (3-2)
4. North Carolina 5-3 (3-3)
5. Georgia Tech 3-4 (1-4)
6. Duke 1-7 (0-6)

Miami beat FSU in Tallahassee for FSU's only loss of the year. They have a huge game this week vs Virginia Tech, and a game 3 weeks from now vs Virginia. Win vs Va Tech and they clinch the ACC Coastal. Win out and the ACC Title game will be very fun.
