How to fix Invalid Data!!! error? (Windows XP)

So a couple of games I've tried running on my XP machine since I got it back, keep coming up with an Invalid data!!! pop-up. Any idea on what might be causing this problem?

I tried doing a google for it, but everything I could find was people trying to install hardware.

Have you tried re-installing the games?

Have you given it a scan with something like SpyBot or some other malware finder? Your virus scanner?

That does not look like the kind of error message an honest program would generate. It looks like the kind of thing a piece of adware or spyware would pop up in an attempt to get you to click on links to download their product (somehow).

I did find it quite oddly worded. I'm running Norton right now to see if the AV picks anything up. Then I'll try a spyware scanner. Any recommendations which I should use?

That's not a windows generated error that I've ever seen.

I'd try both Malewarebytes and Spybot.

I don't think that error looks like malware. That looks like an error being generated by DDSPB to me. What it means I am afraid that I can't help you though.

+1 to what Alan said, it's a generated error from the game launched, looking at the system tray shows that the message was generated by that program (it has the same icon that you have on your desktop).

As to the cause of the problem... What was the issue you had with your computer, and what did they do to fix it?

That's most definately a DDSPB-issue. I would post that very screenshot on the Wolverine-boards and they should be able to at least point you in the right direction. Gary should be able to find what causes that error message.

When you say "games", are they all Wolverine-games perhaps? Maybe something with the licensing?

Except it's happening with FOF 2K7 too.

Dola,

The problem with my computer was 50 million viruses, which resulted in the C drive being wiped clean (most of my stuff was on the D drive, which survived intact).

Hmm, so maybe it's an e-license problem then? That the license stuff got lost when the C drive was erased and these games aren't launching because it can't find e-license info?

I don't know enough about game (or software) programming to help too much here, but it could be something to do with the e-license piece (I think they both share), or some other common item between the two.

The screenshot you showed however has the error message coming from the game. So it probably isn't a bad place to start by asking them for help on what is generating it. (ie: can they point you to saying you need to unlicense/re-license or uninstall/re-install, or whatever) when you get that error.

Generally most malware or harmful viruses either use a common application found on the majority of systems (internet explorer, windows media player, etc).. so any pop up would usually come as an IE browser type pop up , or possibly looking as some generic application. The fact that this popup comes up appearing to be from your game seems likely that it is not able to function correctly for some reason.

Did you copy over all of these programs and such from another drive or backup or something without actually doing a re-install on this new system?

If your C drive got wiped, did you re-install the OS and then just leave your D drive in tact? If so, make sure to re-install the game in full. You likely can't just run it from the D-drive on a system that was rebuilt. it has to put information into the registry as well as possibly other locations on the system to show that it is installed and a valid licensed game most likely.

I tried re-installing it the first time they popped up, but I'll try again.

dola,

I'm not sure what the re-install process, etc for the OS was. I had it taken in, so I'll see if I can find out.

Hmm, I just looked in E-License control and the only thing that's in there is OOTP 2K7.

Okay I'm definitely thinking it's some sort of licensing glitch as some suggested.

I tried deleting the receipt.txt and re-installing to see if that would get the licensing screen to pop up, but no such luck. But by the same token, it's not appearing in the e-License control folder, only OOTP as I said.

So my completely uneducated guess is that somewhere the damned thing is secretly tracking the e-License for both DDS and FOF2K7, yet something's not clicking properly for whatever reason.

OOTP 6.5 is Invalid Data!!! as well. So are TCY and FBCB.

In short, every e-license game I have except OOTP 2K7 is generating the error.

Now... how do I fix it?

Sorry Izulde, I did some quick web searches and see that others have encountered this issue for games such as OOTP in the past (and I assume other elicense games).

I would have thought that un-installing the game and then re-installing it should have helped clean it up. Since it did not for you, the only things I can suggest would be to contact elicense and fill out their support form from their website, or try to ask for support from the various games. I am not sure which path would be the quickest for you though.

This is just a shot in the dark, but could this be your problem?

hxxp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ec4b7d80-79b6-4035-92a3-3992a9e09718&DisplayLang=en

I guess you would need to look in your event log to see if your error is the same as this.

Tried that Windows update but didn't work. I'm 98.6% positive that it's an E-license issue. I e-mailed them yesterday about it and, somewhat worryingly, they haven't responded yet. They're normally really swift, so it's a little disconcerting.

I just remembered a fairly important detail. It was only my C drive that was formatted, not my D drive.

OOTP 2007 was on the C drive, so that one I had to download and re-install, as opposed to my other e-license games, which were all on my D drive, which didn't get reformatted.

Anyway, I'm going back and forth with E-license Support and we're trying to solve the problem.
