ESPN's Ombudsman
Pretty long column. I wish this person had real power over at ESPN. She seems to get it.

Yeah, I read her comments about Cowherd's gloating over an Operation Shutdown against some blog site and was impressed. She's even better than the guy she replaced, and she's only been around for a couple of weeks.

Read that too. I don't know if it was possible, but I think I actually lost even more respect for Cowherd after that. Seriously, how is that guy employed? There's not a sports radio guy out there that knows less about sports. |

I find the ombudsman column a fascinating exercise in tokenism. It's almost as though the network assuages any guilt about how it is ruining/shaping/influencing our experience of sport in North America by putting up this once in awhile column. If she had any power to change ESPN's practices, that would be one thing, but for me this is akin to a killer admitting to having sped away from the scene while refusing to admit to the more serious crime that has been committed.

It's a great article, and I wonder when listening to her talk about the Around the Horn commentators whether they really actually are reasonable, sober men, but are goaded and told to ramp up the volume and fighting to make for better TV.

I didn't know anyone thought anything different. Otherwise, you've basically got The Sports Reporters with Dick (or Jeremy) Schaap.

Yeah, I always thought it was clear that it was the point of the show. There's a reason I don't watch it.

Well there are some that think that some of the people on the show are naturally obnoxious.

Hopefully they bring a like-minded person in next. Although since the redesign they took her off the front page (at least as far as I could see), making me think its not a priority.

Eh, always largely seemed like an exercise in uselessness to me.
Even she acknowledged that the ratings don't lie, there's a reason that certain things are overcovered (which was the crux of a her final column). And as long as that's the case, it's really hard for me to take the vocal minority who bitches about the coverage particularly seriously. People who gripe about too much Favre or too much Yankees or too much whatever remind me a lot of the people who used to always claim they watched PBS when they were really watching All In the Family or whatever. It's a trendy thing to say but their actual behavior is quite different.

I agree. Her columns were great. She definitely nailed this one. What she raised is definitely one of the main reasons I rarely, if ever, watch ESPN unless there is a college football of NFL game on.

Aye, what was ever the point? They've been running this column for four years now, and its clear that TPTB at espn ever listen to the ombudsman.
